OREWORD The Civil War left America with a legend and a haunting memory . . . People clung to the memory of what was gone . . . they put a strange gloss of romance on what they saw, cherishing the haunted overtones it had left . . . finally, there was the simple memory of personal valor-the enduring reali- zation that when the great challenge comes, the most ordinary people can show that they value something more than they value their own lives. Wheii the last of the veterans had gone, and the sorrows and bitterness which the war had created had at last worn away, this memory remained.
