A Dedication Students welcome the sound of his whistle andhis familiar urgings from the sidelines because they know that these belong to a man who had truly dedicated himself to the athletic program at G.H,S. During the past nine years, he, along with his winning team, have compiled an impressive record, thereby gaining for the Greenbrier High School a place of honor and prestige among Arkansas basketball teams. Ever since 1960, when he joined the faculty at Green- brier, his name has been synonymous with outstanding basket- ball teams. As early as 1960, he and his boys were able to advance to the semifinals of the State Tournament, and in 1963 he shared the honors with his Junior Basketball Team, as they took home the First Place trophy in the State Tourna- ment. As the years passed, his reputation as the coach of a winning team grew, as Greenbrier advanced to the State Tournament year after year, taking home top honors as State Champions in 1964-65 and again in 1965-66. ln 1967 and 1968 it seemed as if Greenbrier would again receive the top accolade, only to lose it in the final games. In 1969 he and his teams again carried on the Greenbrier winning tradition by winning the SCA Invitational Tournament for the fifth year out of six. Besides gaining the admiration of every member of the faculty, administration, and students, he has gained a revered place among outstanding men in his profession. Being elected All-Star Coach in 1965 and chosen Third Vice-President of the Arkansas High School Coaches Association is proof enough of the respect he is paid by other coaches. He is the object of such respect and admiration not only because of his dedication to the school's athletic program, but also because of his humility, his interest in the individual, and his willingness to be satisfied only with the best. ln light of his dedication and persistent striving toward a standard of excellence, the PANTHER staff takes great pride in dedi- cating the 1969 annual to Coach Doyce Winningham. ' ll ADMINISTRATION Administration and Faculty , Q Xi' mgfxx Mr. Bill Abernathy School Board Standing: E.F. lvlcivlillen, Sec.g Marvin Cantrell, Pres. Seated: Preston Kelso, T,D, Day, Gene Dear. Superintendent The difference between a good school like Greenbrier and a mediocre school is its superintendent. Greenbrier isfor- tunate this year in having Mr. Bill Abernathy as its superintendent. Mr. Abernathy has done much this year in promoting school spirit as well as the educational side of school. To him, school is a very serious business and should be treated as such, and Mr. Abernathy has done a great deal to see that each student has the opportunity to receive the best education thatGreen- brier has to offer. w A Q. - g if in I High School Principal Launched with a Bang! That's the only wa to describe the 1968-69 school year. Thanks to the administrative effi- ciency, that typical first day of school confusion was eliminated. Long lines of disappointed students mobbing the office to have their schedule changed and the tugging of misplaced students is a thing of the past now. Because of the hard work put into the arranging of sched- ules by Mr. Charles Henson, almost all the students were pleased with their schedules. Mr. Charles Henson Grade School Principal An important asset to the Greenbrier administra- tion is Mrs. Dean Martin. She keeps the grade school running efficiently through long hours of planning and dedication to immediate tasks. A recent example of her untiring devotion to better educational facil- ities is the setting up of an Education Television system in grades one and two. Mrs. Martin's success can perhaps be attributed to her philosophy that each child is an individual. Be- cause of the fact that each grade school student is im- portant to her, she brings quality education to each of them. l Mrs. Linda Atkeison Mr. Charles Bane Mrs. Fern Brannon English and Speech Counselor and Science Fourth Grade IU' Facult Miss Aubra Brickey Mrs. Jean Burgess Mrs. Bettie Davis Home Economics School Nurse Third Grade N ,Y ,,, t V ' farmq? ., iv! - f A- jig 1 H , V-' Q wwf. k,'. Few of us. realize the work that Mrs. Williams and each of these girls put into our office every day., Without them, we'cl all be lost, for they contribute a very big part in keeping our school running so smoothly. We appreciate very much our office staff for contributing so much to the management of our school. Ss., Nlrs. Seated: Queen Sherry Nixon and Debbie Wilcox The 1968-69 Homecoming game will long be remembered. lt was the night all Greenbrier was waiting to see. For on this night the mighty Panthers met one of their toughest opponents of the entire season--the Scott Boll Weevils. lt was also the night when the new Homecoming Queen was crowned. Miss Sherry Nixon, a Senior, was crowned in a pregame ceremony by Junior Spears and Jerel Jones, captains ofthe Panthers. Debbie Wilcox carried the flowers and crown, which were pre- sented to the Queen. Mary Jane Jennings, the Senior Maid, was escorted by Jimmy Everett. Linda Harrington, the Junior Maid, was escorted by Doug Hodges, and Jeannie Hall, the Sophomore Maid, was escorted by Johnny Day. The Conway High School Band boosted the Panthers' spirit by accompanying the Cheerleaders with rhythmic yells and presenting an entertaining half-time performance. The Homecoming spirit was promoted all during school that day. A pep assembly was held which proved to the Panthers that the school was behind them all the way. The Student Council sold Panther booster ribbons, inscribed with the slogan, Scratch Scott. All in all fccld weather not includedb this 1968-69 Home- coming was outstanding. For its success much credit belongs to Mrs. Atkeison and Mrs. Phillips, Senior sponsors, Coach Guthrie, and the Cheerleaders. The Student Council was also responsible for the many assemblies we had this year. All the while, they were putting to practice democratic practices in their many endeavors throughout the year, and building leadership qualities within its membership. Midnight oil burns in the annual room as the staff puts the last minute touches on The Panther. D-Day is deadline day and no matter how hard you try to stop the clock, or turn back the pages of the calendar, it somehow arrives. You suffer mortal wounds when copy won't count or a picture goes bad. You suggest sur- render when a page is missing, but somehow as a team you struggle through last minute catas- trophes. You try not to remember the fatigue and heartbreaks, but instead the close Friendships you've made and the joy of being a part of some- thing that will last. As you wrap up the Final copy and envision bombs bursting at the arrival ofthe i969 Panther, you assure yourself that it was all worth while. Panthers finish with on impressive 5-3-1 season The Greenbrier Panthers, picked as preseason underdogs, came roaring upto Class B Conference contenders by walking away with a 12-8 victory over preseason Conference favorite Grady in the first game of their second season. Coach Guthrie's Panthers continued to prove that they were to be reckoned with by adding Gould to their win column with a 14-13 score. Even though the score board indicated that Greenbrier had won their third game with Cross County 13-6, they lost one of their key backs for the rest of the season due to injuries. Hazen dealt the Panthers their first defeat. Going into the game without the services of Jerry Roberts, the Panthers were a bit shaky. They were about to give good account of themselves when Captain Junior Spears, another key running back, had to leave the game due to injuries. The Panthers were never able to regain the poise they had shown in previous games, and ended up with a somewhat disputed 8-7 loss. The Panthers were on the winning trail again, and defeated Lake Hamilton 14-7. The next game was to be played against Vilonia, a team that was also in their second year of football and had not won a game during the current season. Due to the long standing rivalry, built up in basketball, between the two schools, it was no surprise to the Panthers to find Vilonia pointing toward a win over Greenbrier. By the end of the first period, it was apparent that Vilonia was playing their best game of the season. Due to the outstanding efforts of several first-year varsity players, Greenbrier was able to take home a 13-O victory. The game with Scott was our Homecoming game. Too many costly fumbles and broken plays cost the Panthers the game by a score of 24-2. Coach Guthrie was not able to convince the young squad that last week's game was history, and that the next game with Oak Grove was the game they should be concerned about. The Panthers went on the field pretty much convinced that they would lose the game, and they did, by a score of 34-0. This made their third loss ofthe season. By the time the final game with Marshall rolled around, the coaching staff had convinced the Panthers that they could play better football than they had in the last two games. Consequently, they played Marshall a O-0 tie. But for a few bad breaks, the Panthers could have won the game. The season's record was five wins, three losses, and one tie. The Panther football team and student body are very proud of their new head football coach, Richard Guthrie, and assistant coach, Doyce Winningham, and feel that they did an outstanding job during the current season. We look forward to even better things next year. 87 Main Team Jerei Jones Junior Spears Doug Hodges Jimmy Everett Don Pruitt Captain Captain Captain Albert Smith Rickie Satterwhite Joe Cunningham David Nixon Jackie Lucas Johnny Day Jerry Roberts Butch White Gary Spears Kenny Tackett Ronnie Barton Richard NI iller Vernon Smith Donny Nlcivlillen Dal Burgess , L. -3 'A ' ,bps-qi .ilueaealxulm W ,L ,ans 'p5,,n-o--lnuyn was 'es -. , .pi-me--.I-1.02 i Back Row: Robbie Thorn, Ricky Smith, Larry Johnson, Steve Atkinson, Kenny Nokes, Robert Cross, Dan Collier, Rickey lVlcCollum, Kenny Rhodes, Dewayne Reynolds, Johnny Anthony, Nlanager. Iunior Football Our' Junior boys put up a good Fight, although they didn't win many games. Still, they acquired the training and the experienceso valuable to a GOOD Football team. Maybe next year, with this year behind them, they can bring many victories to Greenbrier and put the name of their team on top, where any Greenbrier team should be. ? 1 K 46 1.8! ?0f - Jef 4444 , .f ,A .F - A. As time went on, deadlines began popping up right and left, hundreds of pictures had to be labeled and sorted, and layouts had to be planned for every page. We grew weary ofthe long hours of gruelling work, fatigue, and heartbreak when a picture didn't come in or a layout wouldn't fit. We even suggested giving up when a picture was missing. And we had our bad days--Vicki and Pat arguing over spelling, Bettizelle losing her composure after dropping a stack of alphabetized pictures, and Sherry trying to divide her time between the Paper Staff and yet still have time to do much of the typing for the annual. But somehow we stayed with it and managed to survive the disasters. g Within this book is a retrospective record of a single year at G.H,S. We have attempted to mirror the distinctions of each class--from the uneasy zeal of seventh graders to the cocky self-assurance of seniors. We have changed the format a little from that of previous books, adding a little more of the written word, and giving more pictorial coverage to candid shots of classes and events. We want to especially thank Mrs. Linda Atkeison, our annual advisor, and lvlrs. Virginia Phillips, our cc-sponsor, for their guidance and help in keeping us out of trouble. The other faculty members are deserving of our praise, for without their patience with us, we could not have succeeded. We have tried to capture the potpourri of experiences, which make school days such a memborable time of life. But in a larger sense, the reality of Greenbrier School cannot be defined with words and picturesg it can only be ap- proximated. The true reality lies within each individual student.
