MOUNTAIN BREEZE Published by the Senior Class of GREENBANK HIGH SCHOOL Greenbank, West Virginia DEDICATED TO Virgil B. Harris who lias been a principal of Green Bank Schools for the past twenty-five years. (Good luck Mona; you 11 need it!) 31 CLASS PROPHECY After graduating from Green Bank High School as part of the great ole’ Class of ’70, Micky Collins enlisted in the Armed Forces finally making it his career. The year being 1990, after 20 years of service, Micky has become a well-known 5-star General, stationed in Liechtenstein. He asked for special permission for a 90-day leave to visit his friends and relatives back in the United States. Flying home on the “Flying Eagles” airline, Micky picks up the “NEW YORK TIMES” and is startled by the headlines, TALLMAN (Republican candidate) FOR PRESIDENT. Reading over the article describing Tallman, he suddenly realizes it is his dear ole’ buddy, Eddy, of all people! Turning to the sports page and passing up the comics (for once!) what should he see but a life-sized picture of Harold Tyson who has become successful playing professional football for the “Green Bank Packers.” Further down the page, Micky catches a glimpse of the new coach for the all-girls football team at Goucher, the FORMER Miss Becky Chestnut. Arriving in New York, Gen. Collins immediately discovers that some of his school friends have “made it big” in television. Among them are Wanda Smith, who was awarded the “quiet” award, while Rhonda Wenger replaced Lucy on “The Lucy Show.” She plays opposite her favorite co-worker, “Harry.” Anxious to get home, Micky steps into a phone booth hoping to call home. Instead, he dials a wrong number and gets the operator at Covington, who sweetly answers the phone saying, “Good morning. This is George’s girl. May I help you?” That sounded familiar!! It couldn’t be anyone else but the one and only Rosemary Lambert, who married George Hipes, also a graduate of Green Bank some years ago. He tells Rosemary of his intentions and she volunteers to help him look up the ’70 grads. She has kept in touch with “Cathy Dave” who finally got that special license to organize their own team and are now living in Norfolk. She also knows the whereabouts of “Henry Karen.” Living in Baltimore, they have found complete happiness competing against the “McLaughlin’s football team.” Leaving the big city of New York, Micky travels homeward to Durbin for a few weeks of fun and relaxation. Picking up the county newspaper. “THE MOUTHY JOURNAL,” Micky notices that the editor is his old classmate, Buster Waybright, who used to be the manager of the Green Bank Golden Eagles. One of the features this month has to do with Linda Taylor. She has moved to the “terry” cloth department in “Grimes” five and dime store in Elkins. Another feature states that Barbara Greathouse is presently employed at “Montgomery” Ward, but he also reads that she is an added attraction as the Go-Go Girl at “Charlie’s” Pink Door Palace in friendly, downtown Pine Grove. Micky’s idea of fun is spending a Friday night at the Sportsman. Arriving there he sees a familiar face, or so he thinks. Walking closer, he immediately realizes it is his old buddy, Bob Beverage. In a lengthy conversation, Micky finds out that Bob is still living in Arbovale and is now President of his own Sugar “Crist” cereal company. Suddenly, a song comes on and Micky turns toward the platform just in time to recognize another school chum, Pat Coleman, singing his favorite theme song, “Yesterday, When I Was Young.” Pat still has his marvelous singing ability and playboy tactics, and even at this age he still breaks the hearts of all the teenage girls. Traveling home from the Sportsman late that night, Micky sees a familiar “bug” traveling enroute to Marlinton. He realizes it is another ’70 grad. (Who else but Charlotte Shears in her “white” Volkswagen!) Micky “gets-away-from-it-all” by relaxing at the local drive-in movie still located in Bartow. Conversing with Jim Gragg, Micky learns that Jim is the policeman seen patroling “Sheets’ Road.” Micky and Jim decide that a movie is just what they need, especially when the movie is “Hell’s Angels” starring Linden Good with his famous motorcycle. The same old concession stand is still there, but the new owner is “blue-Jay” Whidney, and his special waitress, Betty Brewster. 32 Jean Lowe has put her artistic talents to work by publishing a book especially for the ’70 grads of Green Bank High since they were the last class of graduates. In it, she lists the activities and occupations of the grads that have been successful. As Micky reads on, he finds the following information: Cheryl Colaw is still in school furthering her education on her favorite subject, “Gragg” shorthand. Dottie Colaw has become manager of the Allegheny nightclub located on Cheat Mountain. Michael Crist has put his hidden talents to work by making a small fortune as a “weaver.” Clarence Ervine is now a pilot of a “jet” liner with headquarters in “Bowyer.” Fred Gardner has followed Mrs. Hingeley’s advice on Shakespeare and is now one of Shakespeare’s greatest fans. Dave Hawkins was seen on television the other day racing his favorite “Falcon,” which he named “Lindy.” Gary Hedrick is a well-known hair dresser specializing in giving “Toni” permanents. Mike Hickson, remembered as “Playboy of 1970,” is now photographer of “Playboy Magazine,” using “Theresa” as his model. Arne Hungerbuhler is our one and only “International Playboy,” but he also takes time out to make his favorite “Cole-Slaw” dressing. Sue Ann Kelley has now found a new “ray” of sunshine in her life, and his name is “Ronnie.” Marilynn McLaughlin is an expert camper with a knack for skunks. She also adopted a new motto: “Tradc-me-Barb!” Brent Moore, being the goof-off of’70, is still goofing off, but “shirley” he can succeed. Bob Oliver was a long-time rival with Brent, but now he has found his own “Shirley.” Debbie Poling is at present an employee at “McElwce” Studios in Marlinton. Roger Ryder is now the president of the “Blue” Cheese Company. Glema Rexrode is a professor of Alcoholism at “Davis” and Elkins College, butisstill pining over “that stolen kill” from dear old’ John. Larry Sheets has become a “trainer” for the Ringling Brothers Circus. Linda Snyder is happily married and is presently living at “Hawks” Nest. Vicky Taylor finally owns a ranch in Wyoming. She has been seen riding her “cole” back horse called, “Pat.” Micky is now reacquainted with all his former classmates and buddies from the last graduating class of Green Bank High School. As Micky closes the book of the 1970 graduates, he recalls all the good times spent in school. He, along with all the other students, really appreciated all the guidance and understanding they received from the entire faculty and from their parents. We shall always treasure the pleasant experiences and wonderful times spent in the classroom and participating in other activities. We take this opportunity to say-“Thanks so very much!” 33 Round The Campus 1969 PROM Queen..............Donna Matheny King...............Roger Barkley Attendents........Cathy Moyers Pat Coleman MUSIC DOUBLE QUARTET FRONT ROW: Cathy Moyers; Karen Conn; Rhonda Wenger; Becky Chestnut. There ha to be a united effort by bu ine and industry, govern- mental agende , and educational inititution to keep pace with the pace age. The citizen of Pocahonta County have taken the giant itep in con olidating their Achool y tem by building the neiu high ichool. We Atitl need, your iupport even though Green Sank High School will exiit no more. I wi h to take thi opportunity to thank Mr. Hard , the faculty, parent , and itudent of Green Bank. High School for their co- operation in moving the Pocahonta County School Sy tm forward in order to give future generation a more equal opportunity. Sincerely, Grey M: Ca ell, Superintendent Pocahonta County School From The Principal's Desk A static society finally becomes a dead society. The absence of change in any organization or activity shows the lack of progress. As we see the closing of this high school, after more than 50 years of operation, we see an opportunity for a progressive change. A larger student body will make possible a more enriched curriculum. This is needed in order that we may better prepare our boys and girls to meet a society that is in the space age. When the school started, we were barely out of the horse and buggy days. The quality of work that was done by the majority of the more than 2,000 graduates is positively reflected in what they have done in our society since graduation. For the schools to fail to make provisions for our boys and girls to be in a larger school where more provisions are possible than is time in a small school, would be unfair to our future graduates. Thus, we must replace our sentimental feelings for the old school with a new and larger organization that will better meet the needs of our teenage youth. It has been my happy lot to see 1,184 seniors graduate from this school during the past 25 years. I am happy to observe that a large number of these graduates have made valuable contributions in different facets of society. 1 contribute their success and contributions to good teachers, forward planning of Boards of Education, Superintendents, churches, civic organizations, and the loyal support of school patrons. While 1 see the doors of the high school close with a sentimental feeling, 1 attempt to balance this feeling of sadness with a feeling of gladness-better opportunities for our youth in a larger school where more provisions can be made for students than has been possible in a small school. 70 A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE When industry makes plans for expansion, account is taken of past experiences, present conditions and possible future needs. This look into the future of necessity is not limited to a few years but generations. Our schools and school people must of necessity plan on similar basis as is done in industry. When we think of schools we think of people—boys and girls-future citizens—local and world wide leaders-the full development of the child. Let’s look for a moment for what we need to develop all the children as whole children. First we should know that all children are different mentally and physically. Some have physical defects in speech or limb deformity. Special provision should be made for those. A second group have average capacity, another group are below average in capacity, and another group is found to be above average in capacity. They will all be citizens. Will the same school program satisfy each group? No—No—No. What are the present facilities and what should be our plans for the future? We can say in one sentence that our present facilities are not sufficient to meet the obligation we owe our youth. Now, let’s enumerate a few things they need and deserve. Self-expression in music and dramatics is a God given talent. We have no room for provisions for dramatics. Our auditorium is of necessity being used by a high school class thus eliminating the possibility of a dramatic program. The auditorium is our only available space for music and only then when not occupied by the social studies class. Our music program for approximately 500 pupils is operated by one teacher from grades one through twelve. Even with the greatest effort one teacher can do little with this number of pupils and our present facilities. Our commercial teacher has 140 students in typing and shorthand. We do not have room nor facilities for bookkeeping, business law, filing, operation of modern business machines, and other commercial courses that could be offered. Our Home Economics teacher has use of two small basement rooms for an enrollment of 77 girls. Large well-lighted, well-equipped rooms with modern furniture and properly decorated should be the proper setting for teaching home making. A cottage on the high school campus would enable the teacher to train the girls in house keeping. We have one small gymnasium for our athletic program, intramural sports, boys and girls physical education and grade school recreation for their recess periods. Physical education is and should be required for all boys and girls. We do not have a qualified physical education teacher for girls now, nor shower facilities for the girls. A large physical education properly equipped for athletics and physical education is a MUST in our school if our children are expected to develop physically as well as mentally. We have one average size class room for our science program and no provisions for our Math department. One teacher is caring for all our science program for the entire high school. Our social studies department is limited in courses because lack of room and the loss of one teacher last year. Modern high schools have separate study halls and libraries. In our school the two occupy the same room. It is almost impossible for good work to be done under these conditions. We could go on at length and see things that are needed. We have tried to look into the future for a long time plan. This plan will not be realized as long as we think “we can’t”. When we direct our thoughts in the direction of its being a necessity then and only then will it be realized. Some will say it can’t be done. Our answer to that is “it can be done when we West Virginians realize that our Youth is our most important asset”. Reprint of an Editorial from The Golden Eagle, September 1956 71 History of Green Bank High School EDUCATION IN GREEN BANK HIGH SCHOOL The first school in the vicinity of Green Bank was established in 1780. It was a typical pay school of that period. In 1820 to meet the needs of a growing population, the citizens established a school on the John A. Gum property, known as Cartmill Creek. After the churches were built, the session rooms of the church became the schoolrooms. The pastor or a visiting teacher taught in these rooms for a dollar a pupil if there were as many as ten scholars. The first free school in Green Bank was the Academy, established in 1842. Professor Benjamin Arbogast, who influenced the founding of the school, served as the first instructor. The school was a part of the academy program of the county. After graduation from the academy and attending Institute for a week, a student could qualify for a teaching position by passing a test given and prepared by the County Superintendent. Green Bank District had its own Board of Education at that time, so the applicants went before the Board to qualify for the position. Following the close of the Civil War, the Academy building was remodeled and renamed the “Advanced School.” This school served until 1916, when it was replaced by the present high school. The last session was taught by C. E. Flynn, who later became County Superintendent. In 1916 John W. Goodseli, President of the Board of Education, with the aid of Dr. Leland Moomau and other interested citizens founded the Green Bank High and Graded Schools. The first levy was sufficient to build the part known as the high school. At first the high school and grades were both in the same part of the building. As enrollment increased, the building was extended to what is now the gymnasium. In 1926, the present gymnasium was erected. The first school term opened in the fall of 1918 with a small enrollment. The first principal was W. P. Haught of Bristol, West Virginia. The first faculty was Misses Lucy Meredith, Margaret Hunt, and Lillian Moomau. The first graduate was Miss Grace Curry. N. Phay Taylor, the second principal, was succeeded by T. P. Harwood, who served four years. In 1936, Claude McMillion became principal and served until his death in the spring of 1945. Mr. Mack Brooks, Assistant County Superintendent, served until the end of that term. In the fall of 1945, Mr. Virgil B. Harris of Gassaway became the 7th and last principal. Basketball was organized early in the history of the school; football was organized in 1926. Home economics was started in 1921. The Future Homemakers club was organized in 1930 and is one of the oldest in the state. In 1930 a separate Vocational Agricultural building was constructed; the following year, the bus garage was erected. The hot lunch program was introduced about the year 1935. In 1936 an addition to the main building was made and steam heat was installed. In 1944 the band was organized under the supervision of Miss Margaret Johnson. In 1946 a new floor was lain in the gym and a new heating system was installed. In 1946 the lunch room was remodeled to serve the 500 pupils and personnel. The installation of freezing units in 1948 enabled the Vo-Ag students to butcher and freeze the meat served at these meals. The county Health Immunization program began about 25 years ago under the supervision of President L. C. McCutcheon and U. H. Hannah. In 1949 the seniors established the tradition of an annual tree-planting day under the supervision of Mr. W. E. Blackhurst. In 1946, Green Bank High School established another tradition, the annual homecoming. In 1969 some 477 graduates attended the celebration. In recent years stationary desks in the library have been replaced by tables and chairs; new shelves have been added. According to the North Central Re-evaluating committee in April 1969, the library compared well with the best high school libraries in this state in materials and equipment. Recently a new Physics laboratory has been installed. Eight modern laboratory tables are available for use in this laboratory. When the school closes at the end of the present year, the faculty and community have reason to be proud that standards have been maintained to enable the school to remain a member of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and a First Class high school. This evaluation is based on teacher qualifications, curriculum offerings, library and other equipment, and organization and administration of the school. 72 Autographs 73 Autographs 74 'S'.- - •' .' s .- • v ' • • '. -■ • • - .• , ’•• ' • .
