MOUNTAIN BREEZE ’53-54 GREEN BANK HIGH SCHOOL Green Bank, West Virginia v We treasure the memories of our school life and realize that they will become even more priceless to us through the years. Perhaps through the pages of the Mountain Breeze, we can portray to others and can keep for ourselves some of our cherished memories. We present it, not as a great literary product, but simply as a picture of happy years in Green Bank High School. It is our wish that the joy received from this book in later years will repay us for our efforts toward making it a success. DEDICATION TO OUR PARENTS As we look through the years, it is our parents who always form the background, the foundation for our growth. They are the ones who guided our first steps, who started us out on the first day of school, who bandaged our cuts and bruises and listened with patience to our tales of woe. Our parents are the ones who have made innumerable sacrifices for us; they are the ones who helped us over obstacles, and it is they who comforted us when our little worlds turned upside down. Therefore, in recognition and appreciation of their untiring, unending devotion, service and love, we dedicate this, our 1954 Mountain Breeze, to our best friends - -OUR PARENTS. B. West Virginia Wesleyan Social Studies Mr. Dan Taylor Custodian EDUCATION IN GREEN BANK DISTRICT The first school in the vicinity of Green Bank was erected in 1780. It was a typical pay school of that period; the fee was paid by boarding the teacher a certain length of time, according to the number of scholars in the school. As Green Bank became a larger place than a one-house-town, a school was erected below the town at what was then known as the Crossroads, and named after the location. The school lasted until the year 1820, and then a school was built on what is now the property of John R. Gum, which was then known as Cartmili Creek. This school served the purpose of educating the pioneer children for a decade or more. As churches were built with better regard to the density of the people, the session rooms became the school houses, the session room of Liberty Church being one of the most important in Green Bank Community. The session room schools were usually taught by the pastor, and if the pastor did not teach, outside teachers would teach a term of three months for a dollar a scholar if there were as many as ten scholars. The session room schools lasted until 1842, when the Green Bank Academy was erected where the Odd Fellows Lodge Hall now stands in Green Bank. This was the first free school and was first taught by Professor Benjamin Arbogast, who had influenced the founding of it. The usual number at- tending was from sixty-five to seventy-five. This school was part of the Academy program of the County which called for the erection of three academies; at Green Bank, Huntersville, and Hillsboro. These three buildings were of brick and were the most modern buildings in the County. Most of the people in Green Bank District sent their children to this school. These scholars boarded at Green Bank for there was no method of conveyance from the more distant homes. When a student had finished this school he could attend Institute for a week, and then pass a test given and prepared by the County Superintendent and become qualified for a teaching position. Green Bank District had its own Board of Education at that time, so the teachers went before them to qualify for a job. But they had to have as many as two trustees of the three to sign their contract before the job was forthcoming; the salary being about sixty dollars per month. A few months after the Civil War, the building was remodeled and changed to a two-storied one and renamed the “Advanced School.” It had a high standard of education. The old Academy served until 1916; the last session being taught by C. E. Flynn, who later became County Superintendent. Its place was taken by the High School. In the year 1916, John W. Goodsell, President of the Board of Education, with the aid of Dr. Leland Moomau, founded the Green Bank High School with the graded school being in the same building. The first levy of money called for enough money to build the part known a few years ago as the high school part, which extended from the front of the building to the present end of the press room. At first high school and grades were taught in the same part, but as enrollment increased the building was extended to the beginning of the gymnasium, and a fewyears later the gym and the rooms above it were erected. This last was completed in 1926. Quite a dispute was aroused over the location of the building, so it was submitted to a popular vote. The main candidates for the election were Cass, Dunmore, Durbin, and Green Bank, with the latter coming in ahead with a fair majority. The first term of school opened in the fall of 1918 with a small enrollment. The first principal was W. P. Haught of Bristol, West Virginia, with Miss Lucy Meredith, Margaret Hunt, and Lillian Moomau as assistants. The first graduate of the school in 1919 was Grace Curry, who had attended Marlinton for three years. In the year 1920, there were five graduates: Virginia Dare Moomau, Helen Beard, Bertie Beard, Lillian Beard, and Lucille Oliver. In 1921 there were ten graduates, fifteen in 1922, fourteen in 1923, nineteen in 1924, and so on. N. Phay Taylor, the second principal, was succeeded by T. P. Harwood, who served nine years as principal. Mr. Harwood was replaced in 1931 by John Roach, who served four years. In 1936,Claude A.McMillion became principal and served until his death in the spring of 1945, when Mr. Mack Brooks, Assistant County Superintendent, served until the end of the term. In the fall of 1945 Mr. Virgil B. Harris of Gassaway, West Virginia, became principal and has served ever since. Brief Highlights: Basketball started early in the school’s history; football not until 1926--first touchdown for the school was made by Olen Hiner in a game with White Sulphur. Home Economics was installed about three years after the founding of the school. The F.H.A. Club was organized in 1930 and is one of the oldest in the State. In 1930, a separate Vo-Ag building was constructed; the following year, a huge garage. Hot Lunch Program for Green Bank High School and Graded School was introduced about fifteen years ago. In 1936 a new addition to the main building was made and steam heat was installed. In 1944 the G.H.S. Band was organized under the direction of Anna Margaret Johnson. In 1946 a new floor was laid in the gym and a new heating system installed. Pocahontas County added a County Music Supervision in 1948, Miss Dorothy McNeel served as supervisor. The Homecoming for 1952 was attended by a large crowd, approximately five hundred alumni. Festivities for the Homecoming celebration consisted of a football game between Webster Springs and Green Bank High Schools. The crowning of the King and Queen took place between halves. That evening, the Alumni Dance was held in the school gymnasium. The largest crowd ever to attend a Homecoming was in 1953, when approximately a thousand alumni returned for the festivities. We, the prophets of ’54, cannot give a true report of what each person will do in life, but we shall attempt to predict their future. What we saw in the crystal ball might not be true, but you may depend on it, for this magic sphere has for centuries predicted progress and failure. As our classmates, friends, and guests danced around the Crystal Ball on May 21, 1954, the glitter and brightness wafted the class into another world--a world of the future, we were privileged to behold our classmates twenty years hence. It was nine months ago, but we remembered it as if it were yesterday how we hurried from the room and grabbed up bits of paper on which we wrote the mystic ball’s revelations. We found Bill Orndorff as Commodore of the Pittsburgh Fleet on the Great Lakes. Gary McPherson was still looking for a coaching position, and, by the way, a wife too. Good Luck, “Snaz” ! ! The ball showed John Harris inspecting timber for the Mower Lumber Company under the supervision of Chester Kinney. We saw “Pete” Hamrick a missionary in Malaya. As a pastime “Pete” was looking for our ancestors, the “apes.” After Kirk Kerr failed his entrance exams to West Point he decided to settle on the Kerr Ranch near Arbovale, West Virginia, and raise sheep. George Pritchard was having a hard time. After three trips to Cleveland, he still couldn’t persuade a certain Redhead to come to Dunmore and raise Angus. George took the easy way out and joined the Foreign Legion. After many attempts John Beard was still trying to fill the shoes of Caruso. His last pair of shoes wore out four years ago. Leonard Beverage had invented a new way to process hides. He became rich and bought out the Pocahontas Tannery. The only trace we could find of “Cider” Chestnut was that he had died of some new disease. It was a happy death though with Patsy Hall by his bedside. Patsy married three days after “Cider’s” death, and has been married four times since. Howard, like all the rest of the Collins, joined the F.B.I. He had only been with the F.B.I. for a month when he was sent out to haul in the bootlegger Charles Sheets. Howard and Charles both made history when Howard discovered Charles’ 20,000 gallon still on Back Mountain. The largest Body and Fender Repair Shop East of the Mississippi was being run by Frank Nelson, who had to do something because of his frequent wrecks. Gilbert Rexrode, driving his hot-rod “Lizzy” at the speed of 397.45 miles per hour, broke the speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats. If you would like to have your face lifted, just see Alfred Sutton. After going to a Beautician School Alfred set up shop on Fifth Avenue of New York. There is not much chance that Alfred Ervin will lose the title of Light Wei Champion of the world. He won this title in his first match and after twenty rn matches he still holds it. We saw Jennings Wright as the inventor of the new Chlorophyll Jiffy Diaper- double your money back if the diapers leak, stain, or tear. Betty Simmons is busy “wrighting” that these are the best diapers on the market. The ball showed us Dr. Elbert Whanger, who is noted for his very painless way of extracting false teeth. President Warren Slavens was riding in triumph throughout the U.S. with First Lady Doris Snyder at his side. Keith Dickenson went bad right after graduation. It has been reported lately that he is a Communist spy in Siberia. Dr. Robert Neighbors and Nurse Phyllis Greathouse working side by side dis- covered a new vaccine for polio. Bill Galford, the world’s famed jockey, won the Kentucky Derby for the second year in succession, riding the famous horse, “Fle-Bite.” Jake Galford and his company of mountain climbers failed to reach the peak of Mt. Everest on their fourth attempt. After taking lessons from Ralph Lowe for a year, Forrest Grogg is “Back In the Saddle Again” strummin’ on the Ole’ Banjo. We saw Don Yates acting as Toastmaster on W.K.A.Y.--T.V. Co-starring Don was the old time favorite Jane Russell. PROPHECY Manager of the Cleveland Indians, Joe Baylor, steered his team to a seat in the World’s Series. Much talked about “Moon” Hiner was leaving for Mars, we lost track of him 15,000 miles out and haven’t seen or heard of him since. The W. V. U. Mountaineers entered our picture; being very lucky to have on their team Ronald Gladden, who broke all scoring records in West Virginia. Succeeding Waiter Jett as county agent of Pocahontas County we find George Moore. George made a name for himself when he discovered the way for killing C rab grass. Bob Vance and “Bunny’’ Turner went to the Everglades five years ago in search of a new kind of Lizard, they are still there, at least we hope they are. Deloris Snyder is making her income by giving her permanents in Virginia. She is wearing a wig now after experimenting on herself. Jane McLaughlin is a Professor at the New York University, teaching the Art of Friendship. Rollin’ in the money is Marg Vint, who runs the Gamblin’Joint in Las Vegas, Nevada. Holding the World’s Record for the fastest flight around the world in Elenor Wymer. Elenor made her flight in a Helicopter. Do rene Simmons was on atrip to Berlin and got on a “big spree. She accident- ally “staggered” over the boundary line into East Berlin and was shot down instant- ly by Communist Police. We find Betty Young touring the Eastern United States. She won this tour as a prize from winning the County Fair Pie Contest. It wasn’t hard for the Judges to make their decision for Betty’s was the only pie entered for competition. Wilma Riley’s ability to cook has landed her a job as well as many boys. She working as Home Economist for the Monogahela Power Company. Donna Brubaker is living the life of a movie star. She has starred in many vies, her latest one being “Hogs and Horses, Who Could Eat the Most. Donna s private secretary, Nancy Judy, is holding Donna and her weight down since her three marriages. Many stars are after Nancy for their secretary, but she has decided to stay with her old classmate. After inventing the new hair dye--Stay Red, Jean Gum has more money than she ows how to use. After being bitten by a Cobra Snake, and still being alive, Connie Wilfong decided her life’s ambition was to trap snakes. As a member of the U.S.O. Club, Shirley Peck is now overseas entertaining and singing for the G.I.’s. Phyllis Myers is still clinging to her native state as director of the State Insane Department. Sailing off the shores of Africa is Patty Nottingham, the first woman Admiral of the United States Navy. Mary Ann Cassell now has a good job picking pine seeds for the Forestr De- partment. Mary Ann is well suited for this job because she needs no ladder. The first-class housewife, Nancy Nicely, is busy taking care of 24 children. She thinks they come “Cheaper By The Dozen.’ Barbara Blackhurst was electrocuted several years ago while trying out Electric Milkers on the Gum Dairy Farm. While serving as reporter for the Boston Newsletter Barbara Nottingham was given an assignment to find out about a certain Major Operation. After rushing into the Operating room, she got her nose cut off. She always was good for having her nose in other people’s business. Barbara Taylor went crazy several years ago trying to invent a way to sleep with her eyes open to help future Sociology students. Rachel McCutcheon is now a very successful Doctor in the Big Town ot Stony Bottom, where she doctors anything from “Toads to Elephants.” As the lights grew dim and the last picture faded, we gave a sigh of relief and joy. This was followed by a silent prayer of hope that the 29 boys and 26 girls of the class of 1954 might in a small way live up to the revelations of that glittering Magic Ball. « 4j JUNIORS Joyce Arbogast Betty Bennett Joan Bennett Hope Bolton Manota Carpenter Roy Carpenter John Cassell Donald Cromer Colleen Dill Rodney Gainer Ralph Geiger Nancy Gillispie Blair Gragg Charles Gray Mildred Greathouse Barbara Gum Letha Harper Ella Nora Hill George Hoover Violet Hoover A JUNIORS Connie Johnson Mona Kelly Gene Kessler Dorothy Lambert Evelyn Mace Doris McLaughlin Brown Meeks Edward Monk Allen Moore Marvin Moss Katherine Mullenax Harold Neighbors Allen Nottingham Donald Nottingham James Oliver Betty Rexrode Mary Jean Simmons Patty Simmons Barbara Slaven Virgil Summerfield James Sutton Lyndell Sutton Louise Tallman Lorene Thomas Betty Thompson Benny Taylor Jerry Taylor Phyllis Townsend Keith Tracy Franklin VanDevander Homer Varner Carma Wenger Tommy Wyatt SOPHOMORES Lyndell Brooks Bobby Brubaker Harold Bryant Brown Cassell Kyle Cassell Ruth Collins Betty Cook Wayne Cook David Cromer Georgia Curry Charlotte Dahmer Ben Elbon Jimmy Elliot Jimmy Elza Richard Galford Ronald Gray Ruth Ann Grogg Mary Francis Gum Colleen Hughes Billy Jordan Ray Kelly Gladys Lambert Jean Lambert Shirley Lambert Bobby May SOPHOMORES Cora Lee McLaughlin Ronald Monk Sylvia Moore Dale Muilenax Murrei Muilenax Evelyeen Murphy Ted Nelson May Ellen Nicely Hilda Phillips Joan Phillips William Price Phyllis Purkey Ruth Rankin Joyce Rexrode Terry Sage Linda Samples James Sheets Wayne Sheets Bessie Simmons Mary Simmons Beat Siavens Donald Startcher Caroline Tacy Kenneth Tallman Suellen Taylor Sharon Terry Ramona Terry Betty Vance William Vandevander Franklin Vandevander Shirley VanDevander Mary Waybright Robert White Nancy Wilfong Emory Wyatt Maxine Harmon FRESHMAN CLASS Ronnie Arbogast Martin Barkeley Franklin Bennett Patsy Burner Russell Burris Carolyn Carpenter Gerald Chapman Arnold Cook Grover Craddock Chester Cromer Shirley C romer Ellouise Curry Bill Dickinson Sue Ervin John Gainer Tommy Gainer Carol Galford Dennis Galford Retha Galford Mary Geiger Johnny Gillispie Jerry Gillispie Sandra Hevenor Norine Kelly Phil Kerr FRESHMEN Bill Kinney Curtis Long Allen Mahaffey Tommy Matheny Judy McLaughlin Susie McLaughlin Betty Mick Bill Moats Bonnie Moore Jack Moore Helen Mullenax David Nelson Dolly Nelson Betty Oliver Carol Oliver Glenda Phillips Betty Queen Georgia Rexrode Jackie Rexrode Mary Ryder Thurmon Sampson Kenneth Sharp Lilly Sharp Darrell Shears Edward Sheets Katherine Sheets Janet Tallman Sandra Tallman Betty Lou Taylor Sammy Taylor George Thompson Linda Townsend Thelma Vannoy Joyce Waybright Virginia Weber Curtis Weese Daisy White Linda Wilfong Warren Wilfong Mary Margaret Wooddeli Elmer Workmen Joyce Young Ruth Brewster GRADE FACULTY m Mrs GREEN BANK HIGH SCHOOL BAND i a Mrs. Florence Bailey DEPARTMENT MUSIC SCENE’S FROM HOMECOMING FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA JUDGING TEAM F.F.A. The program has grown from year to year with assistance from the patrons of the school and aid from the government. In 1947 the Board of Education enlarged the dining room and kitchen. There is now ample space to feed two hundred and fifty students at one time. Twenty-four girls assist the four cooks at different intervals during the serving of lunch. During the past nine years six thousand dollars worth of equipment has been added to the lunch room and kitchen. This consists of large refrigerators for the preservation of foods, mixers, slicers, and other cooking utensils, besides silverware, division dinner plates, salad plates, and juice glasses. Menus for the meals are well planned and are based on the government suggested menus that are sent out each month. Mrs. Rachel Wooddell is now supervisor of the hot lunch program. The kitchen is in charge of Mrs. Verna Tracy.
