Victory Meli VICTORY BELL— Education Rings the Bell For Freedom was the theme under which our Victory Bell first appeared in 1962. Prior to this time it had been the source of sounding alarms for fires, danger, etc., and oh, how it pealed throughout the valley at the celebrations of the New Year. It is a mystery as to the exact date when the bell first came into existence. We know however that it was here in the late 1890's in the old schoolhouse that is now part of the LDS church. It was a great day when in 1911 we moved into the schoolhouse on the western edge of town. With the people went the bell. At this time the building has only the front rooms and in the 1920's the auditorium section was added. When we moved into the new school house in 1955 the bell remained in the old building. It was silent until 1962 when the student council received permission to remove it. The bell now rests on a portable stand, as shown in the picture. Students of GRHS hope that the bell, which once sounded warnings and celebrations, will now ring for good sportsmanship and a winning team all the way through the state tournament.
