It’s All About Us Green Leaf 1987 Volume XV Green Oaks High School 2550 Prince Valiant Drive Shreveport, Louisiana Editor Primette Braden Associate Editors Deloris Howard Anjel Lewis Rufaro Lewis Ra ' Shima Mason Anthony Wilson Deshunda Washington Christopher Jones Derrick Marshall Jerel Dudley Student Life Green Oaks, a place where educa¬ tion takes precedence, is a edifice of higher learning where a challenge taxes on a new dimension as it faces many students who are matricula¬ tion in this industrious world of diversity. From baking cookies to manipulating the home row keys of a computer, to writing proofs or analyzing a Shakespearian Sonnet, students here welcome challenges and invite them into their curricula. As one visits the corridors, he may hear melodic tunes emanating from the music department or he may be amazed at a new chant pro- duced by the Giantland cheerleaders staff. As he progresses a future executive from the DECA department may approach him, or he may be appalled by a scientist as he studies changes in the Chem-con class. Giant land has prepared many prominent professionals in the educational arena. Many have returned to say thanks to their mascot, and others have become members of Green Oaks staff. The hallow halls of learning which was once a mass of Oak trees, opens its gates every morning to those who keep on the go. The students anxiously await the ring¬ ing of the bell as the doors open and welcome them. One student positively says, “It’s all about us.” Something is definitely “brew¬ ing” here. Green Oaks students readily cheer As they view the mirror of time Here is a long anxious line. Journalist, Dramitist, Doctors too. The discipline, team unity, and music knowledge were evident as each group made appearances. The choir and orchestra combined their talents for an entertaining and staged Christmas program. Throughout the year these groups did a marvelous job as they performed for the student body, other schools and various clubs. Mr. Albert Jackson, Choir Director 75 Cheering With Spirit The Green Oaks Giants are passing through We’re to say — Good Luck to you. Abraham Ester did most of the running for the giants. The offensive line has the responsibility of establishing a good running game and allowing the quarterback time to pass the ball. One of the best offensive lineman was Demetrius Mitchell. His efforts helped the quarter¬ back Robert Smith pass for a winning touchdown in a thrilling 13-6 victory over Huntington. Ardie Smith, was effective in the 28-14 win over Parkway. Earl Jones, was the chief factor in the 20-14 win over Fair Parks. The prime element of the defensive team were linebackers J. Holt, R. Swan, R. Gipson. Adding to the support was D. Clay. Defensive Players who helped the Ninth Grade team have success were Ronald Bagley. Terrace Payne, and Marcus McCarter. Below: Coach Gregory Tisdom. Below: Coach Giant Baseball Keyymen on the Giant team were outfielder Darnell Green, Joe Holt pitcher, and back-up catcher. Darnell’s hot hand at the bat created an excellent RBI average. He was also a back-up catcher. Joe was third base man when he was not pitching. James Taylor was probably the most outstanding player of the year. He was named to the District All-Star Team. When James did not pitch he was third baseman or catcher. As you can see most of the team were really versatile players and this helped to make sucess. 92 Under the coaching of Hayes, Gipson the Giant baseball team enjoyed the best season ever. For the past several years the Giants had struggled and remained in the cellar in district play. This year, however, ex¬ perience and a positive at¬ titude brought about a winn¬ ing situation. Pictured at left are Michael Mitchell, out¬ fielder, Shauncy Mitchell, short stop, and A.C. Whitaker first baseman. Pictured below are Paul Whitfield, Pitcher, Eric Har¬ ris, second baseman, and Darnell Green outfielder. These players had good bat¬ ting averages and outstan¬ ding contributions to a suc¬ cessful year. A Successful! Season 93 Lady Giants Another Great Year The Lady Giants made gigantic studies throughout the 1987 season. Coached by Willie Stevens and Assisted by Pam Bolten, the team ranked first and second in all polls. Breaking records was the “in” thing with this group of young ladies. Felicia Hall broke the school record by making 42 points in one game and is the all time highest scorer for girls. Alisa Adams ranked high in the rebound category and Shannon McCullugh made outstanding Con¬ tributions in assists. Underclass teammates were always there when needed. The team’s theme song “Lean on Me” was evident in each game. Right: Felicia Hall. 21, goes up for two points. The Giants got off to a slow start in the season, but bounced back in the second half of the season. District Competition was tough however, the Giants gave their best in each game. This year team starters are sophomores and juniors which means the Giants will be “awesome” come next year. Tony Williams Anthony Gaines Rcnard Robinson Thatcher Kelly Paul Whitfield Giant Basketball This year’s team could be best described as “a good situation that will definitely get better.” Coach Willie Stringer completed his thirteenth season at Green Oaks directing a young and talented group of gifted sophomores. Assisting Coach Stringer were Roderick Foppe and Aldon Kelly. Outstanding players for the year were Tony Williams, Thatcher Kelly, R. Swan, and Paul Whitfield. Graduating seniors were Corey Mitchell, Joe Holt, Patrick Lars, Paul Whitfield, Calvin Smith, Robert Myers and Malvin Murflf. The varsity track team was competitive this year with a group of very talented sophomores. Kevin Porter, shot putter, did not set any records this year but with two years left he should become an outstanding performer. Emanuel Brooks was a stellar performer in the high hurdler as was Roovelroe Swan. Thatcher Kelly and Emanuel Brooks were the main stays in Javelin competition. There were a few pleasant surprises from Curtis Fulton, Abraham Ester, Kevin Whitfield, Louis Jones, Wayne Williams, and Earl Brown. Green Oaks, Green Oaks, WE love you dear.
