S0 Many Games lf you thought you had noticed a few changes in this year's Varsity Cheerleading Squad, you were right. Sev- eral changes took place which gave the Varsity Cheer- leaders a more refined and college-like look. One dramatic change in the squad this year was the use of male cheerleaders. For the first time in GMHS history, the guys got their chance to stmt their stuff' and show their spirit in front of' the Ram Fans. The guys were: Scott Pecikonis, Jedd Erfurdt, Joey Bradley, Ron Olemski, Steve Kyle and Andy Kerr. It was a hard road at first for the guys trying to learn the moves and the style. However, with each practice, the guys improved and proved to be not only a great asset to the squad, but a unique asset as well. This year's sponsor was Linda Burton. She was respon- sable for organizing the Varsity uad and hel ing them gain the recognition they deservid this year. Cpheerlead- ing Camp was held at CSU in Fort Collins this past year. The varsity squad not only won the spirit stick for most enthusiasm, but they also made it to the finals. Liz Mendez, Janel Rohe, and Kristi Lucas were this year's captains. Linda Hinkle was captain at state where Varsi- ty won the 1986 excellence award. fcomparable to 2nd I .L .... :egg -- placel The Varsity Cheerleading Squad was made up of Scott Pecikonis, Jedd Erfurdt, Joey Bradley, Rob Olenski, Steve Kyle, Andy Kerr, Andrea Schroeder, Katie Bur- rell, Kristi Lucas, Jill Stevens, Tracey Clark, Liz Men- dez, Laura Scott, Laura Bender, Debbie Davis, Debbie Major, Heather Collard, Amy Daniels, Kellie Hem- minger, Kellie Pagliasotti, Linda Hinkle, Janel Rohe, and Debbie Brand. Tryouts took a total of six days. Four of these six days were spent at Cheerleading Clinic. The first day of the actual tryouts, they were judged on stunts, jumps, and gymnastics. The second day they were judged on how they performed the group cheer, individ- ual cheers, and 8-counts. As you will agree, the changes made in the Varsity Cheerleading squad proved to be a definite change for the better. It was fun to see the guys and the dolls work together to make this a memorable year not only for the athletes who were being cheered-on, but also for the spectators who attended the athletic events and pep- assemblies. Shefsays that she really enjoys being a cheerleader and doesn't mind all of the long hard practice. It really pays off, is her comment to- ward practice. She loves her squad. I have a special relationship with my squad, they're great!! There is one thing that Linda doesrft like about being a cheer- leader. The Poms strut their stuff. The lastest in the Varsity cheer- leading squad at GMHS-Male Cheerleading. The few schools in the area fortu- nate enough to have male cheer- leaders, it has been more than thirty years since male cheerleading has been common in this area so it seems like a new idea. When one of the guys first brought up the idea, everyone thought it was a joke. When it was taken seriously, more than twenty guys came to try out. Everyone believes the most de- serving guys succeeded. The six lucky gentlemen turned out to be Andy Kerr, Joe Bradley, Jed Erfurdt, Rob Olemski, and Scott Peckikonis.
