It has been said that the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger was our country's greatest tragedy since the death of John F. Kennedy. On January 28, the country watched as the first ci- vilian, school teacher Christine McAu- liff, was about to be launched into space. The whole country cried when McAuliff and the six other shuttle as- tronauts died. In honorarium it was proposed that the newly discovered moons of Uranus be named after the astronauts. In July, everyone was shocked to hear that President Reagan had cancer, but after surgery, he was said to be healthy once again. At the Geneva Summit, a major top- ic discussed between President Reagan and Soviet leader Michail Gorbachev, was Reagan's proposed Star Wars defense system. With the hijacking and murder of Leon Klinghoffer on the cruise shipg the Achilla Lauro, and the hijacking of a TWA airplane to Lebanon, the United States was ready to fight back against terrorism. Ronald Reagan, being suspi- cious that Khadafy was behind much of the terrorism, made accusations that caused tensions between Lybia and the United States. Other world-wide disasters were the tragic earthquake in Mexico City, and the volcano and mudslides in Columbia. Court and the nation was shocked with the confession of Cathleen Webb that the man she accused of raping her several years ago was actually innocent. Gary Dodge was found innocent after a retrial, and he was released from prison. Something in the way Cathleen Webb acted still caused many to believe that she was not telling the truth. The death of movie-star Rock Hud- son, due to the dreaded disease AIDS brought the disease out into the open. When people found that such a familiar person was stricken with the disease, they began to relize that something had to be done about it. Hollywood benefits began, and studies increased. The death of Rock Hudson spurred an awareness of AIDS that could save the lives of many others. In the Philippines, a presidential election between Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon Aquino turned into a countrywide state of emergency. The problems started when Marcos was ac- cused of fraudulent voting practices, and of destroying the economy of the country. The people of the Philippines rebelled against the government under Aquino's promptings and Marcos was encouraged to relinquish his power . . . Current - 209
