Every perse.. 1Continued on page . fContinued on page 31 HELL WEEK AND ONION ODORS END WITH PRESIDENT'S BALL T0 INITIATED STUDENTS - Stiff shirts and evening dresses were testimony that Hell Week was over Saturday night as the students of' Green 'Mountain Junior College and the seniors and juniors of Troy Conference Academy came to Pres- ident and Mrs. Jesse Parker Bogue's annual reception in the gymnasium. The hall was decorated with a blue and white canopy of crepe paper stretched above the floor while six illuminated white crepe pillars were erected around the edge of the danc- ing floor as if supporting the can- opy above. Wall decorations as well as attractive bouquets completed the effect. The ball followed the first of a series of monthly formal dinners celebrating faculty and student birthdays. Those honored Saturday night were the Misses Claire Mur- ray, Betty Carver, Lila Peleher, Elea- nor Elliott, and Charles Cofiin, I. J. Nichols, Leslie Curthoys, Rodney Scoville Stanley Smithers, Earl Dlmckel and Howard Bartholomew. Marching into the dining room, a reg- iment of. waiters in single file en- circled the table singing Happy birthday to you, dear chil.lren and deposited a large cake upon the table. Until midnight in the gymnasium dancing feet responded to the toe- tickling tunes of Red Holl:1nd's Em- pire ,Staters of Whitehall. Hell Week was over. No more need. neckties stream down fresh- man backs, paper bags perch crazily on green heads, young students struggle in clothing worn in reverse, bathrobes clothe the new arrivals nor onions smell their pockets. On Monday, every new student appeared wearing sweaters, vests, trousers, dresses, or what have you, in reverse. Due to general awk- wardness and embarrassment, Prof. R. L. Swann repealed the rule for the evening meal. Wearing paper bags on their heads Tuesday, many cleverly shaped sail- or or latest style fashion hats. Unique of all odeas was a small peanut bag attached by a rubber band to the head of Ruth Moerchen. Wednesday the campus reeked with onion fumes as each frosh from time to time took a nauseating mouthful of onion to appease the sophs. The following day a riot of color broke loose ufpon the campus as each frosh donned his hitherto pri- vatc bathrobe and paraded the campus throughout the day. -Wynne Wiggles Eastman, son of Dr. East- man of Burlington, lacking a bath- robe scarf, stretched a. tie around his middle, after a great deal of dif- ficulty, and trundled about with his fellow-bathrobers. On Friday, the frosh were to learn to sing the Green Mountain Junior College song, Lux Fiat to the sophs. They were to be carefully watched, and if caught stumbling through, forced to sing a solo. Not wishing to detract from the fine musical concert presented, this was vetoed. As the weekend drizzled out, so did hell week for the rule that the word peanut must be in- serted throughout the song Finicule Finicula was also forgotten. Tiring -as much of initiation as the frosh, the sophs allowed free- dom the last two days.
