The hall was decorated with a blue and white canopy of crepe paper stretched above the floor while six illuminated white crepe pillars were erected around the edge of the danc- ing floor as if supporting the can- opy above. Wall decorations as well as attractive bouquets completed the effect. The ball followed the first of a series of monthly formal dinners celebrating faculty and student birthdays. Those honored Saturday night were the Misses Claire Mur- ray, Betty Carver, Lila Peleher, Elea- nor Elliott, and Charles Cofiin, I. J. Nichols, Leslie Curthoys, Rodney Scoville Stanley Smithers, Earl Dlmckel and Howard Bartholomew. Marching into the dining room, a reg- iment of. waiters in single file en- circled the table singing Happy birthday to you, dear chil.lren and deposited a large cake upon the table. Until midnight in the gymnasium dancing feet responded to the toe- tickling tunes of Red Holl:1nd's Em- pire ,Staters of Whitehall. Hell Week was over. No more need. neckties stream down fresh- man backs, paper bags perch crazily on green heads, young students struggle in clothing worn in reverse, bathrobes clothe the new arrivals nor onions smell their pockets. On Monday, every new student appeared wearing sweaters, vests, trousers, dresses, or what have you, in reverse. Due to general awk- wardness and embarrassment, Prof. R. L. Swann repealed the rule for the evening meal. Wearing paper bags on their heads Tuesday, many cleverly shaped sail- or or latest style fashion hats. Unique of all odeas was a small peanut bag attached by a rubber band to the head of Ruth Moerchen. Wednesday the campus reeked with onion fumes as each frosh from time to time took a nauseating mouthful of onion to appease the sophs. The following day a riot of color broke loose ufpon the campus as each frosh donned his hitherto pri- vatc bathrobe and paraded the campus throughout the day. -Wynne Wiggles Eastman, son of Dr. East- man of Burlington, lacking a bath- robe scarf, stretched a. tie around his middle, after a great deal of dif- ficulty, and trundled about with his fellow-bathrobers. On Friday, the frosh were to learn to sing the Green Mountain Junior College song, Lux Fiat to the sophs. They were to be carefully watched, and if caught stumbling through, forced to sing a solo. Not wishing to detract from the fine musical concert presented, this was vetoed. As the weekend drizzled out, so did hell week for the rule that the word peanut must be in- serted throughout the song Finicule Finicula was also forgotten. Tiring -as much of initiation as the frosh, the sophs allowed free- dom the last two days. Hell Week was also more lenient than usual for President Bogue intervened in softening the original rules. i351 1 e or no ceed th' Dr. Clo' and a senteff list, '- SCT: of sa bf l: ir to s catif re cu nom. 8.11 8111 teria, 2. and ten 'Tlhe 1 school s erating ranger first .5 with th- ning the s. budget for lows: Interest Bonds r 8 teac Additi Heat De'p GMJC L ATER As trme wore on we drd adjust ourselves to the habrts and customs of the college learnrng to eateth Just so, to sleep rn the beds provrded to look about for companrons boldly, and to worketh at the homelessons, more or less And we drd all the thrngs the sophomores drd and learned to tolerate them and to even make frrends among them Day by day we garned rn self confidence Onct, the sophomore sgrrls drd throw a tea for the freshman females and so colleve lrfe grew on apace to better thrnvfs COOPIQRAT IX II DISSENSION Suddenly, rnsprred toward class organrzatron, we drd come all toffether rnto one lrubbub on October IO and drd elect unto Us some officers Some crveth for one and others howleth for another as presrclent, but after drscussron fro and to ue drd decrde upon George Gordon lxrngsley as our esteemed lerder Speedrlx drd we prcketh the remamder of the offrters for our presrdent has a wavv chrn de termrned black hart, and a strong Vorce urth Whrch to quell the babblrnvs Hence forth, to wrt, whereas, the slate now beareth these names Presrdent Gordon Ixrngslcv Y rce l resrdent Bertrand Andrews Tr e'rsurer Roland Crffor cl lVloreover the rrvht uorthy Nlrss Susan B Lllrthorp u as rnvrted to ofhcrate as faculty adwrsor Whrle Alan Stewart, long srnce wandered au as was dulv elected a member of the Student Athletrc Councrl Alack, not one has been appornted to represent our noble Group slnce hrs departure thence DUE TELL Anxrous to handle the class money, the prcsrclcnt and treasurer drd hucldle and propose that each member pay the huge sum of one buck as dues before february r nrneteen hundred srx and thrrty As one man the loyal class drd vote upon the proposrtron favorably Yet xr hen the trme cometh, only Jo of our 9 and roo drd cough up Wherefore, the good presrdent drdst scold and exhort strenuously to pry the cash from the defaulters who are half Scotch and two thrrds French SUCCESSFUL DIIFENI S Other meetrngs equally frurtless drd We hold and rn honor of George XV3.Sl11I1g ton on February 22 we drd sponsor an rnformal dance rn the gx mnasrum Shortly after, our presrdent, after feelrng the purse, drd pronounce the affarr a dreadful Hop Only erglrt lonely couples nad mrstaken rt for a dance We freshmen drd of course partrcrpate rn other numerous actrvrtres, such as the wrnter carnrval on February 29, the operetta Gypsy Rover at the Toun Hall on March 18, and other mrnor occasrons too rmportant to mentron E36 U I l I . 7 lx - w N L , C ' 3 - . . Abi Hinc Ccipillis Old rnan depression had the fair town of Poultney in his grasp and he was squeezing harder and harder. The merchants were gasping loudly and wheezingly with every new bit of pressure. Especially the barbers, ahl yesl the barber's jirniny Blanche was all for taking his car back to the finance company, and Smitty was taking any and all kinds of offers for his two chairs, while Teddy Pafundi was just waiting for the Poultney River to warm up. Wihen suddenly the streets, the sidewalks, and the lawns were filled with marching students, students possessed of nice, hne, long tresses which they had, acting under orders from the Bush Committee, a Nloses Hall Organization, volun- teered to give and give willingly CFD in Poultney's brave and long fight against O. NI. D., the arch enemy. As they bore down upon the barber's Smitty's, Teddy's and then Jimmy's, the din became terrihc and cries of utake it all off, give me a Heinie, etc. filled the air. Enough hair, curly, thin, heavy, thick, red, black, brown, and blonde, was snipped from student heads to put the horse sofa business back on its feet for the rest of the year. Thus it went for three days, IO boys, 15, 20, 25, 26, 27, 35, 40, 52, 53, 54, SQ and finally all that was left was Dick 'fSamson Eichhorn vowing that depression or no depression those long, black, locks stayed on in spite of- and high water. A small passage of timel E That night Dick and the rest of the boys looked very collegiate and comfortable with their new top wear. A few days later that progressive student publication, the Green Jlffounmivz Times carried on its editorial page an article mob rule, strong arms, mind of your own, etc, youave seen the type. The faculty praised it, the students scanned it Crationalizationfj, and the barbers burned it. Thus is recorded as a vital step of our growth in the year 1936-Abi Hinc Capillis. C. scored in the first few minutes of play. Norwich after taking the opening kick-off on their twenty-five punted to the h-Iountaineer 40-yard line. Chornyak skirted end for twenty yards on the First play, and several plays later he went over from the I4-yard line to give G. NI. C. a 6 to 0 lead. The Cadets held the Green and Gold in check for the remainder of the half. Early in the third period G. NI. C. blocked a punt and recovered on the Norwich 20-yard line. Nlinogue, Hoey and Ross alternated in advancing the ball to the I-yard line where Ross plunged through for a touchdown. Near the end ofthe period the Nlountaineers gained a possession of the ball on the Norwich 20. On the first play of the final period NIinogue passed to Hoey for a first down on the nine from which point Ross plunged for another score and place kicked the point giving G. NI. C. a IQ to 0 lead. Ross kicked-off to Norwich and Captain Novak blocked a punt on the Norwich 39-yard line, G. NI. C. recovering on the Norwich 15. Ross then plunged through center, bumped off the safety man and went over for his third touchdown and kicked the point making the score 26 to 0. GREEN NIOUNTAIN I2 RIIONTPELIER SEZINIINARY 0 ocroeiziv. 19, AT Moxrpeurza Nlontpelier Seminary became the third victim of the lX'Iountaineers, going down to a I2 to 0 defeat at the hands of G. NI. C. Late in the first quarter the Green and Gold pushed over a score after a 50- yard sustained drive with Gordy Hughes plunging the last two yards for the touchdown. In the second period Montpeliel' stopped the G. NI. C. running attack, but the Nlountaineers took to the air and scored another touchdown. Chornyak passed from Nlontpeliefs 30-yard line to Gordy Hughes, who took the ball on the ten and went over only to have the play called back as G. NI. C. was offside. On the next play Chornyak again passed to Hughes who took the ball on the five and went over for a touchdown giving the Green and Gold a I2 to 0 lead. During the second half the ofhcials took the game away from the players by in- flicting numerous penalties. Nlost of the play was in mid field, howover, G. NI. C. once advanced to Nlontpelierls 15-yard line-only to be pushed back by penalties. The Green and Gold lost the services of two ends, Sennett and Sunderland, who suffered injuries which kept them out for the remainder of the season. GREEN NIOUNTAIN 6 VERMONT FROSH 0 ocrosen 26, AT BUraL1No'1'oN lX'Iike Ch0rnyak's 6-yard end sweep, late in the final period, culminating a 60- yard drive, enabled the NIOuntaineers to defeat the Vermont Frosh 6 to 0 and remain in the undefeated class. The Frosh, the best in several years, at Vermont, presented a stiff defense which stopped G. NI. C. in its tracks for three periods, while the Cats threatened to go places with their passing attack. Frank Ross' punting was sensational throughout the game. His long booming punts constantly set the Frosh back on their heels. One of his punts traveled for seventy yards in the air, and at a time when it was needed most. VVith six minutes to play in the final period G. NI. C. baseball club came back to win nine straight and conclude the 1935 campaign with a record of ten wins and one loss. Building around two veterans, outfielder Ordway and first baseman Cleverly, later shifted to short, Jack Heffernan developed a hustling ball club made up of VVilson, DeBonis, lhfahar and Cleverly, iniieldersg Wfolinsky, Grdway and Pafundi, outnelders, lVIacArthur, Q. The pitching corps consisted of Eaton, Qrdway, VVilson, Stevens, Wlaclswortli and Sweeney, with the first two named being the regular starters who bore the brunt of work throughout the season. The best performances turned in during the year were against the Vermont Frosh and Albany Business College. After losing to the Frosh by a I2 to 5 count at Burlington, early in the season, the Green and Gold downed the Cats S to 4 in a return contest in which jimmy Eaton limited them to four hits and fanned nine. On Nfay 29, pitcher Ordway turned in a superb exhibition, defeating Albany Business College 3 to 2, limiting them to but two hits in ten innings. The lXfIoun- taineers led 1 to O until the eighth inning when pitcher Nlarsh of the Business College hit a home run with one on to give his team a 2 to 1 lead. G. IVI. C. tied the score ia their half of the inning and won out in the tenth when Jones reached first on catcher's interference, was sacrificed to second and scored on Eaton's line single to right. One of the outstanding games of the season was the Mountaineers 32 to O de- feat of Albany Pharmacy. Twenty G. NI. Our program now continues from New York City. O. K. New York .... l7Ol P E A K S The Life Ah me--to think that we really were Freshmen once upon a time. Yes, it was back in the year 1934, and in accordance with all Freshman conventions, we had our own special duties to perform and to make ourselves present at other social functions. Woe to the Freshmen. Watcli out for the Sophs. It was Freshman week and did we ever suffer, but it really was loads of fun. These days are ones we shall never forget. Our class was surely entertainment for the upperclassmen. As if we weren't already made to feel looked down upon, we were forced to parade in our bathrobes with our noses and our eyebrows painted red and our hair parted in the middle. That was just one day, however, on another, the boys had to wear skirts Csome fitted and some didn'tJ, and the girls had to wear the boys' trousers, Cthey didn't look half badj. The crowning day for the boys-the day when they really wanted to hide their heads-was that day when they were compelled to wear shorts and keep their faces covered with shaving cream. VVe must admit for all our embarrassment, we at least showed ourselves to be real sports and had become much more acquainted with the Sophs after that week of inevitable blushes. The first big event which we had to show ourselves in a formal way and at our very best, was at the annual f'Freshman Reception, given each year by our esteemed and revered faculty. Although they were a little tardy in accordance with the schedule by two weeks, the event had its purpose of introduction and introduction and introduction, fulfilled. By the time the last student had reached the end of the receiving line, I think that we all could have applied for toothpaste ads. But to be serious, we think that this social gathering is one of the most helpful in making a group of new students friendly and at ease with their superiors. The orchestra was great and it was that night that we were introduced to G. lVI. C.'s dance floor. All in all we had one especially good time. In November our class had a chance to show its executive ability. Vlfe hrst elected a Social Committee of which Solveig Ansteensen was chairman with Dot Stiles, Mary Brock, IVIilliard Duff, and Gordy Hughes to aid her. The result 11' this group's efforts was the Football Dance which was one of the best dances of the year. The gym surely looked collegiate and fairly yelled the football cheers. I think that we had every college banner in the Union hanging on the walls. If I remember correctly, the financial committee had a vacation at this dance, but at least we broke even and everyone had a good time. It wasnft until the Hrst of hilarch that we gave another dance. This was an- other simple job for our accountants, but after all we weren't after a large bank account. That was the last function that our class had to do with that year. It must be said then, that we ended with great success and with the aim to do even better work in the coming year. ' September of 1935 saw most of the '36's back once more on the campus of good old Green Nlountain Junior College, not as Freshmen now, no indeed, but as dignified Sophomores. Owing to the fact that some of the members of our last year's social committee did not return, and also feeling that it would be better to give a new group the chance to exercise the powers of such a committee, we elected a new organization. The chairmanship of this new committee was won l7Il GMJC by Dot Strles Her ardes were Brlly Campbell Solvervf Ansteensen, Freddy YVrlson, and lack Boucle Wlren we spred the shyrng Freshres the first thrng Whreh we thought of was the embarrassment whrch We were made to suffer rn the prevrous year Wow rn as our chance to garn revenge, or at least, we could have the consolatron rn seerng another class suffer as we had Drd we hate fun, or drd vre have fun Hes, We drd rn sprte of the fact that the facultv had the rdea that we ought not to do the very thrng that vxe drd X es slr, those freshmen went through a w eelt whrch they Wrll never forget One day they went to and from therr classes Wrth faces red dened Wrth rouge and attrred for bed Another day they strolled about the cam pus wrth therr harr parted rn the mrddle, the grrls Wearrng gentlemen s prnts and the boys wearrng farr Nlrsses Sunday go to meetrn, dress Oh yes on strll another day the lwreshrrren were requrred to carry about wrth them an onron and an rnflated bag When requested by therr upperclassmen the Freslrres had to take a brte of the luscrous frurt and remark on rts delrghtful flavor and Qawor I must say that the class of 36 had rts hurts Well relreved Later rn September, our frrrls vane an afternoon tea to the young charges of Ames Hall lXIrs oyce acted as the faculty advrser at the swell affarr At the close of the party each of the blushrng young ladres of the Freshman class vras presented wrrh a beautrful earnatron rn token of the comrng years frrerrdshrp Phe purpose of the party was to break down tl e class drstrnctron whrch rnevrtably arrses at the begrnrrrng of a new school year It rs needless to sav that the affarr fullv served rts purpose On Arrnrstrce Day afternoon, the grrls who had recently moved rnto College Hall Uwe a house warmmg tea to the grrls of Ames Hall and to the ladres of the faculty Nlrss Grbson was rn charge of the delrghtful affarr It rs assumed that everyone had a most pleasant trme Our hrst dance of the second year was held on the evenrng of November the twenty srxth Thrs was the first really formal dance to be grven at Green Nlountarn Dot Strles and her commrttee was rn charge Wrth Nlary Brock as charrman of the decoratrons The gym was wonderfully decorated The cerlrng xx as made of a huge mass of balloons and around the floor placed at very approprrate spots were beautrful evergreen trees and vrhrte prllars Our orchestra was that group of foung fellows from hlrddlebury College who call themselves the Black Panthers At thrs dance the so called Datrng Bureau lent ltS assrstance Ihrs bureau of two, Ruth jackson and Roger NIaeArthur arded the meeker students to secure partners The Sophomores feel proud to have put on such a successful hrst formal dance The everrrng of February twelfth saw Green hlountarn errjovrng the vocal musrc whrch was grwen to rs by the hlrcldlebury College Glee Club Our class, together Wrth the Freshman class most cordrally entertarned our vrsrtors durrnff therr stay Lven the sarnts of College Hall most gracrousl3 gave up therr dorm to the use of the boys Thus completes the tale of the actrvrtres of the class of 36 a class whrch wrll never forget the frrendshrps and enloyments recerved durrng the two vears spent 'rt our good old Green 'Xlourrtarn Through rll our troubles rud broleerr d rtes We stuck together lrlxe good shrpnrrtes Xnd rf rt rs ever s'rrd th rt we ielt blue Xl cll the fellow who sus rt knows wh rt hc can do I72 I O O I 1 ' ' , ' ' 1 4 - .
