IN MEMORIAM Donna Miller, an eighth grade pupil, passed away February ll at the Ripon Municipal Hospital after an illness of five weeks. She reached her fourteenth birthday on February 5, only a few days before her death. Donna was o very active girl both in school, where she served as librarian, and also outside, as evidenced by her great interest in athletics. Her untimely death caused a deep feeling of regret among her classmates and friends. Bruce Heiple The bond started oft the year by playing for the Armistice Day service on the court house lawn, On October 22 and 23 they made their next appearances at the Homecoming activities. A group of band members got together o pep band and a dance band which played for our basketball games ancl for some of our school dances. On April 3, the members of the band interested in solo and ensemble work did their best at the tournament held in Ripon. On April 13, a Band and Choral Home Concert was given which had been well rehearsed. Then on May l, the band went to Ripon where they played and marched in competition with other bands at the Music Festival. They entered C class playing Hall of Fame, by J. Olivodoti for their warm up number, Citadel Overture, by David Bennett for their selective number, and Green Meadows by Eric Hanson for their required number. They selected Valley Forge by K. L. King for their street march. In May they played for Recognition night and for Commencement. Their first public appearance this year was made when they sang for the Green Lake County Teachers' meeting. Many glee club members sang fine vocal solos and ensembles in the solo-ensemble contest in Ripon in April. Also in April, they sang several excellent selections at the Band and Choral Concert, ln May the glee club sang in B class at the Music festival held in Ripon. Their warm-up number was The Viking Song by S. Coleridge and Taylor, their required number I See God by Teven and Mencher, their selected number Emitte Spiritum by Schuetky and Howarth. The Glee Club also song for Baccalaureate, Recognition Night, and Commencement in May. Due to the help and direction of the director, Mr. Bischoff, the Glee Club experienced success throughout the year. Since no other school in the league entered the one act contest this year, Green Lake automatically entered the district contest held at Stevens Point November 21. An A rating went to Green Lake here. The Sectional Contest also was held at Stevens Point on December 5. Again Green Lake received an A rating. December l2, the State Drama Contest was held at the University ot Wisconsin Campus at Madison. Twelve plays were given during the day. Four plays received the A award, of which Green Lake was one. The judges all complimented the warmth and realistic situations of the Green Lake play. Out of a possible total of 7.00 points Green Lake received a total of 6.3l. lt was a thrill of a lifetime to hear the award of A read tor the Green Lake play and to receive the fine plaque for the school as well as the individual gold medals. HOMECOMING 1953 The 1953 Homecomlng held October 23 was a well planned group of events sponsored by the Semor Class It began Thursday evenlng October 22 when the student body faculty and residents of Green Lake met at Thralls Sand Pat for the pep rally Pep talks by faculty members the 1952 Kung and Queen James Gnelser and Marlon Palmer 1953 Kung and Queen Charles Stoneberg and Marlene Wells and alumni were glven with much splrnt The band played numerous marches and the school song Cheers were guven by the cheerleaders for players faculty and royalty After the bonf1re the snake dance led by the Kung and Queen followed by the cheerleaders players and student body wound nts way downtown formed a clrcle the mlddle of the street and gave a few more cheers HOMECOMING PARADE A gay and colorful parade preceded the game on Friday All school orgamzatlons and some local concerns contributed entries This f1ne display led by the band proceeded to the school shortly before game time Prizes were awarded as follows f1rst PTA second Junior Class thlrd Freshman Class Special commendatlon was given to the 20th Century Club Senior Class and Sophomore Class SUCCESSFUL FOOTBALL SCORE Camp Douglas booted the opening klck that was brought up to the 35 yard line The Lakers didnt want untll the second half to get moving ln two plays they racked up their f1rst down The half ended 120 In favor of Green Lake The third quarter ended 186 Green Lake was not satisfied yet so another touchdown was made The f1nal score was 256 In favor of Green Lake HALF ACTIVITIES AND CORONATION At halftlme the Green Lake Hugh School band formed at the south goal posts and marched the length of the f1eld At the north goal post they dnd a counter march and returned to the center ofthe field They then formed the letters HI faclng our opponents Camp Douglas Comlng back to Green Lakes slde of the f1eld they formed the letters WIN The band played the Alma Mater and Queen Marlene Wells escorted by Harold Brooks and followed by 1952 Kung and Queen James Gnelser and Marlon Palmer came out on the tleld where Kung Charles Stoneberg was wanting Kung Charles placed the dainty crown of whute mums on Queen Marlenes head As the band f1mshed playmg the royalty was escorted oft the held Immednately the band began playmg our school song The Washington and Lee Swing They returned to the center of the f1eId and formed a harvest moon and played By the Llght of the Sllvery Moon HOMECOMING DANCE The Homecoming dance was held October 23 at the Village Hall Kung Chuck Stoneberg and Queen Marlene Wells relgned over the dance Music was furnished by records Small football players on the stage represented each one of the Green Lake fellows on the squad Goal posts were erected at each end of the hall and were decorated wlth green and whate streamers and paper f1gures of cheerleaders Page 49 I - I - 1 1 1 1 . , . 1 1 1 1 , . 1 1 1 - 1 1 I I I In - 1 1 . z , . . .5 , p 1 - 1 1 . , . . . . Roxana Thrall The Thespians is o dramatic organization of Green Lake High School, and the only national organization in our school. They began this year with I5 members. An informal initiation was held in the fall admitting IO new members. This year the Thespians undertook a project of beginning a costume wardrobe. Costumes were collected by the Thespian members from many townspeople, After the Senior Class play a formal initiation was held and several more students received membership in the National Thespian Society. The high honor of being a four-star Thespian went to three loyal Thespian members: Roxana Thrall, Bruce Heiple, and Eugene Sandleback. This is the highest honor a Thespian can receive. It meets every second Monday of each month. This year there are 19 members. The purpose of the Latin Club is to provide for its members association with Latin culture and some recreation apart from the study of Latin. Roll call responses are always given in Latin. The activities this year included an exceptionally nice Christmas program. From a candy sale, money was earned to send a S10 CARE package to Yugoslavia. The Roman Banquet in March was the highlight of the year. A live-course meal, eaten entirely with the fingers, was served. A program followed which honored the Gods and Goddesses of Antiquity, A one-act play in Latin was presented by the Latin II class, as well as songs and speeches on Roman culture by club members. Bad luck followed the team for they lost 34 to 6, Green Lake, however, gained more yardage. In the third game of the season it looked as if Green Lake was going to lose again with a score of 12 to 0 at the half in favor of Wilcl Rose. The Lckers came back in the second half to literally smash them down for a I9 to 12 victory. Green Lake traveled to Princeton for the second conference w'n and a tie for the champion- ship, They beat Princeton 13 to 6. Sandleback, Gneiser, and Hoffman did the scoring. To celebrate Homecoming the Lakers crushed over Camp Douglas for their third victory 25-6. In the final game of the season the Lakers lost to Cambria 26 to 19. It was a close game all the way. Sundleback scored twice, Hoffman once, and Busse the extra point.
