We first entered our beloved old 1939. There were thirty-three pupils, fourteen boys. Miss Betty Council was first year of our new life was devoted ing and writing. Cyan .Mdfory school in the year nineteen girls and our leader. The to the arts of read- We also had a course in manners, which I fear we learned none too well. We were then allowed a course in vacationing. No one objected. The second time we all met in class we found some of our members were not there, also we were meeting new children. Our guide through this stage of our education was Mrs. Cora Hilliard. She led us into the mysterious realm of addition and subtraction, vacation again. spelling and art. Soon we were out on As we regrouped again to begin our third term again we met new faces and missed some of the old ones. We me a new teacher, Miss Blanche Buffaloe, who has since then become Mrs. Edwards. She introduced us to several new subjects, among them geography and multiplication and division in arithmetic. We spent the year improving our knowledge of the world and the elements thereof. As we began our fourth year we found our class intact, we had not last a member but we had gained Grover Lewter. We also found that we were still in the care of Miss Buffaloe who again put our little brains to work attempting to enlarge them. This year we recieved a small amount of science and all our former subjects again, much too soon came vacation. Our group met again for the fifth time to find we had a new teacher, not only new to us but new to the school. She was Mrs. Stephenson, the wife of the principal. She led us in quest of nature, this was a happy enjoyable subject to us, as we had been working so hard on mathematics, geography and spelling, We were also given a course in history which was one of the most enjoyable we ever studied. As we went to the sixth grade we were met by Mrs. Rutledge who was our guide through that part of the educational journey. She led us along mathematics. 'We into vacation. We were all Rutledge was our time, she taught the road of citizenship, current events, and soon found another ending of work, opening back as we entered the seventh grade. Mrs. guide. This year we shared Mrs. Hurst's us our history and spelling. We were soon engrossed in work and not too unhappy when a bad snow cut off our shcool time. We thought the vacation was fine, but how we howled when we were forced to go to classes on Saturdays. This year we were all glad to see a haven of rest - - vacation. When we returned to school, we were skeptical about our teacher - - a man. This was the first male instructor we had encountered, Mr. Grady Tunstall. For the first time we had access to the gymnasium and its athletic facilities. We had a wonderful time after we got so we did not slip down on the 17

floor. We were happy to work and develop our abilities there. One month before school closed Mr. Tunstall was married and Mrs. Reba Eatmon replaced him as our instructor. We were sorry to see him go but happy to see Mrs. Eatmon. To our sheer joy, as we returned to school we were members of the freshman class. We went around with our heads in the clouds, meeting our instructors, Mrs. Cleo Baucom, Mrs. Reba Eatmon, Mr. Carlyle Castlebury and Mr. C. E. Cashatt. We went to work about the middle of the second month and tried to redeem our first month's grades. After this we came down out of the clouds and things got back to normal. The fact that a variety of subjects was offered caused us to split into various classes, but we were all still the NFresh Froshn until vacation time. When we returned in the fall it was to start anew our attempts to make the various varsities. The clubs were composed largely of sophmores, freshman, and a very few juniors This was our first attempt at competetive athletics. When we took time to look around we saw a new face on the faculty, Mr. Warren, the agriculture teacher, who also directed the boy's basketball team. On the whole, we found this to be a very successful year. As we return to school for our junior year, we see two new teachers, Mrs. Roy Yates and Mr. Carl McDuffie. Mrs. Yates was in charge of our English, Mr. McDuffie guided our agriculture courses. This year we found we had more liberties and less need for restrictions. To a certain extent we were better pupils. When the Christmas holidays passed, we began to work for our junior-senior banquet. It carried out the Robin Hood theme and was directed by Mrs. Marshall Eeams, to whom we owe our thanks forever. As if by magic as we reassemble here in the dear old halls of Green Hope we find this is our last school year. This is the last chance we shall ever have to learn the things that we may receive here. Mr. Pobert Day is filling the place left by Mrs. Baucom who was with us so long. As we look back over the years we will find many sniffles when we hear memories ring through these dear old halls. And yet we know we take the best it can give with us. Jimmy Byrd Class Historian 18
