Mr. Pettengill has never refused to be disc jockey at our class dances. Mrs, Pettengill has chaperoned our dances, and helped us with our suppers and food sales. In appreciation of the great help you have been to us, we the class of 1963 wish to dedicate this year's Shield to you, Mr. and Mrs. Pettengill. Principal 19 Message Each year the Principal of almost every high school in the country is expected to write an ex- tremely profound and enlightening message to the seniors. This will be neither as I shall merely relate a few facts which may have some meaning to the few who read this. Probably the greatest single thing you must do from now on is to further your ability to think crit- ically. By now, it should be perfectly obvious to you that everything in life may not be as it appears at first look. It is not possible that you have sufficient experience to evaluate and react to the various situ- ations that will be confronted throughout life. Does this not indicate a definite need for each person to have some method to determine a course of action. Experience is said to be the best teacher. This may be true, but a long, hard life is ahead if dependence upon this premise is total. Very few persons are fortunate enough to be confronted with a completely new experience which requires individual thinking to solve. Most experiences are new to young people, this indicates the possibility of relyingion other persons' solutions for the vast majority of situations which will be encountered. In my opinion, schools attempt to provide students with certain solutions which make it easier for them to come to a reason- able conclusion. It is hoped and expected that methods employed at schoolwill be carried over into adult life. It is my sincere hope that your years at Greely Institute have endowed you with more than basic information. Possibly you have learned to think more clearly and effeciently by our efforts. Mr. Thomas Burdin MKTbomqs Baedun Superintendent Education is the WHAT, the WHY, the HOW and the WHERE of your future. WHAT do you wish to do for you life time employment? WHY do you wish to have this type of employment? WHERE is the competition which will challenge you for the right to obtain the job of your choice? Your educational preparation with the school record is the key to the answers for the above questions. Henry G. Perkins Superintendent of Schools MR. PETER CONNOLLY English and Social Studies B. A. . Characteristic - Sarcastic We the 611155 of I 963 We, the class of 1963, look back over our four years at Greely Institute and realize how beneficial and enjoyable they were. As Freshmen, we found our first days very harassing; but as we grew accustomed to the surroundings, we were more relaxed. Later in September we elected our class officers. President, Carolyn Chandler; Vice -Presi- dent, Gordon Mason; Secretary, Janet Anderson; and Treasurer, Lynn Carlson. Rachel Bragg was elected as a member of the Student Council and has been our representative for the past four years. Among other class leaders were those who were active in sports and other outside activities; they helped to keep our, class spirit high. Late in September the Sophomores put on the Freshman Reception for us which proved to be very successful. We all worked hard on our paper and bottle drive, dances, and stationery selling. These few projects proved to be most rewarding for we raised several hundred dollars, which went into our treasury. In March several students went out for their first one-act play, Jacob Comes Home. The play proved to be very successful. When the school year was almost done, we were really just beginning, but we were glad to see summer vacation arrive. In our Sophomore year, our class officers were elected as follows: Gordon Mason, President; Vernon Goff, Vice-President; Tom Burdin, Secretary; Mike Babbidge, Treasurer. This year the boys seemed to take over the class, as all boys were elected. Richard Pettengill was elected our Sophomore representative for the Student Council. Late in September we honored the Freshmen by putting on the Freshman Reception. It proved to be a great success. We were thrilled when our class rings arrived in the spring and we all enjoyed wearing them. Again it was time for the one-act plays to begin. We picked School Daze for our play. In June. we held an invitation dance, including Cape Elizabeth, Falrnouth, and Yarmouth. We had three disc jockeys from WLOB attend the dance and quite a crowd was lured to the gym floor. We eagerly came back to school in September and were glad to be called upper classmen. We man- aged to get off to a good start. We immediately elected our class officers. Norman Taylor, President; Vernon Gof Vice-President; Judy Dexter, Secretary; and Sherry Roberts, Treasurer. Bruce Verrill was elected as our Junior representative to the Student Council. During the middle of the year, the class elected the yearbook staff for our senior year. Janet Anderson was elected Editor and James Williams was elected Assistant Editor. Sherry Roberts was elected Business Manager; Lynn Carlson, Social Editor; and David Turner, Sports Editor. We are all prepared to begin our work on the yearbook our senior year. Natalie Ross was chosen to be a member of the National Honor Society. In March, most everyone tried-out for our play, the last of the one-act plays we would participate in. Our play was Readin, Ritin, and Rithrnetic. In May we helped the Seniors prepare for the Junior and Senior Prom which was titled Fantasy of the Sea. We all had fun and it gave us a wonderful feeling knowing that next year we would be working on our own. We returned in September as Seniors at last; all glad that our senior year had arrived. Our class officers were elected as follows: Norman Taylor, President; Lynn Carlson, Vice-President; Shirley Hilton, Secretary; and Nancy Files. Treasurer. Sherry Roberts was our Senior representative to the Student Council. Rachel Bragg was elected President of the Student Council and National Honor Society. Bruce Verrill was the only member of our class elected to the National Honor Society. Rachel Bragg was elected Assistant Editor as James Williams moved away. Our three-act play this year was The Groom Said No. Honor parts are as follows: Valedictorian, Rachel Bragg; Salutatorian, Janet Anderson; and First Honor Essay, Natalie Ross. We are now approaching graduation with both happiness and regret. As we leave Greely we would like to thank our faculty, Mr. Burdin, our class advisers, and most of all Mr. Farwell who has shown so much patience with us while working on the yearbook. We have had many honor roll students and highhonors go to Andrea McCatherin and John Shaw. In athletics, we are proud to present Joe Cook, Wayne Curtis, Peter Howland, Steven Keith, Wayne Libby, and John Shaw who were on the Greely basketball team. In baseball, Bruce Doyle will be just one of the freshmen that will contribute to the high school team. On the boys' swimming team were Durwood Bragg, Joe Cook, Bruce Doyle, Warren Lewis, and Dana Scott. Focusing on girls' sports, we have Karen Borge, Sherry Lamprey, Susan Orr, Carolyn Sloat, Patty Bailey, Mary Copp, and Nancy Walker who were all on the girls' basketball team. The girl swimmers were Patty Bailey, Sherry Lamprey, Dona MacComack, JoAnn Stoddard, and Nancy Walker. Other Freshmen have also contributed their skills to Greely's athletic teams. The Freshman Class officers this year were John Shaw, President; James Carlson, Vice-President; David Lazott, Student Council membenSusan Orr, Secretary; and Sheila Stowell, Treasurer. Our young musicians this year were Karen Borge, Durwood Bragg, Thomas Dexter, John Glasier, Peter How- land, Mary Kennedy, and Sherry Lamprey. The Freshman chorus will add a note or two to the rest of the school singers also. Several Freshmen were chosen to go to the annual Science Fair this year. ' They were David Files, David Lazott, Andrea McCatherin, and John Shaw. The Freshman class put on a play entitled The Life of the Party in April. Included in its cast were Karen Borge, James Carlson, Carolyn Grover, Steven Keith, Sherry Lamprey, David Lazott, Warren Lewis, Dona MacCorrnack, Andrea McCatherin, Dona Martin, Paul Napolitano, and John Shaw. Mr. Connolly directed the play. There was much excitement among the Freshmen in giving their first spring dance in April. We all look forward to giving many more in the future. FRONT ROW: Norman Smith, Vernon Goff, Norman Taylor, David Turner, Managers. CENTER: Mr. Leighton, Coach. Coach Bob Leighton did a marvelous job this year, especially when you consider the fact that only one of the first six players on last year's team returned to play again this year. This player, Gordon Mason, played an excellent season for the Rangers and helped the team to really spark. Due to his efforts he won the most valuable player award in the tournament. Playmaker, Dale Sanders was another of our invaluable players. His excellent ball handling and fine shooting helped the team greatly in tight spots. His good defense was another good quality that he exhibited whenever he was on the court. Tom Kelly played a good season at center. He helped the team with his scoring and the rebounds that he pulled in added to his value. Helping him with the rebounds was hustling forward Terry Jewett. Terry also came through with a few points, especially when they were needed. The sharp shooting of George Turner added to our final score at the end of each game, and the fine effort submitted by subs Harvey Moynihan and Terry Clinch added to the team's effectiveness. The team as a whole functioned as one unit no matter who was on the floor. Good teamwork was exhibited almost exclusively, and each member of the team deserves a lot of credit for our victories this year. This page sponsored by a FRIEND first 511? The starting five consisted of Billy Burrows, Phil Bolduc, David Potter, Quentin McConnell, and Larry Spiller. Through cooperation of everyone we won the Triple C Sportsmanship Award, which we proudly displayed at the tournaments at the Lewiston Armory. At the Western M Tournament we defeated Richmond, Leavitt, and Wells to become Western M Champs. Our own Gordon Mason was awarded the C. Harry Edwards Trophy for the most valuable player in Class M. Then we were on our way to the State Finals where we met and gloriously defeated Milo 45-42; thus, becoming the CLASS M CHAMPIONS OF THE STATE OF MAINE. The following is a short resume of our play, The Groom Said No. The Cameron family is all of a dither! Steve, their son, has just come home, after two years in the South Pacific. He has not returned, however, to the calm, quiet atmosphere he had so often dreamed of. Instead, he finds himself at a loss to know how to handle his family who are too solicitous and domineering in trying to assist him in adjusting to civilian life. Steve's most perplexing and immediate problem is when he discovers that his mother and Clara, the girl he left behind and the daughter of his motheris bosom friend, have made all arrangements for their immediate marriage. In order to extricate himself from this situation, he decides to pretend that he has been a psycho-neurotic patient and that he has spells which occur without advance warning. The truth of the matter is that Steve during his absence has fallen in love with Lt. Shirley Anderson, a navy nurses To convince Clara and his Mother of his serious condition, he pretends to have a relapse in their presence. . . and then on the pretense of needing specialized nursing care, Steve suggests that they get his former nurse to come to his home as she would be the only one who understands how to take care of him . . . said nurse being Shirley Anderson. Clara consents to this arrangement only on the condition that the nurse be permitted to stay just long enough to teach Clara how to take care of Steve herself. However, the minute that Shirley steps into the home, it becomes a free-for-all between the two girls as Clara in no uncertain words lets them know she is suspicious of the whole thing.
