Music plays an important part of our lives. Various tastes apply to various groups of people. Led Zeppelin was the group rated 1 while the Stones rolled in at second and AC DC took third. With New-Wave music entering our lives in the early 1980’s, Devo was voted least favorite with Kiss fighting for second, leaving the Bee Gees to rest in peace with third place. Turn the Page by Bob Seger was found to be the favorite song with Rush’s Tom Sawyer peacefully cruising into second while up-and-coming Stevie Nicks, with help from Don Henley took third with Leather and Lace. Devo made the least favorite charts again as Whip It was overwhelmingly voted the least favorite song in the 1981-1982 school year. Surprisingly enough though, J. Geils Freeze Frame unwillingly accepted the award for second place as Rick James Super Freak accepted position three. Back in Black by AC-DC not only topped the Album charts but walked away with the blue ribbon on the senior poll also. Newest release for the Rolling Stones TATTOO YOU took the red ribbon for the best Album. Recently Stevie Nicks took a break from Fleetwood Mac to release her own Album, Bella Donna, which took the yellow ribbon, a comfortable third place for a new hit singer-songwriter. Devo accepted their third least favor- ite award for their Album New Traditionalist with REO High Infidelity and The Best of Slim Whitman taking second and third. Cheech and Chong had the number one movie with Up in Smoke, Private Lessons accepted second place, with Harrison Ford and Karen Allen taking up a slow third with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Once again we see Private Lessons on the charts but this time winning first place on the least favorite movie list. John Belushi starred with Dan Ackroyd in Neighbors pulling way out in front of Superman I to notch second place, leaving Christopher Reeves and Margot Kidder to swallow their pride in third place. Sports cars were well on the minds of seniors at survey time as they elected Corvettes, Z-28 Camaros and Porsches as their favorite cars. Economical cars didn’t fare well at all leaving Volkswagons, Fords and Pintos to take the rap for least favorite of all cars. While cruising around in these autos, the seniors of 1981-82 dialed to 94.5 WCOZ as the most listened to radio station while many people listen to WAAF 107 and WBCN 104. With much more time devoted to music than television, Kiss 108 which is best known for New-Wave and Disco music is the least favorite while WSSH and WRKO also made the top three least favorites. Everyone knows that the last place a student wants to be is in a classroom. The question asked was “where is your favorite skipping place?” Quite a few answered at home, while others gave off ideas such as the beach and downtown Lowell. As for their least favorite place to skip, the top three were anywhere in school, at home, or the Discipline Office. Asked of roaming seniors: “What do you do on your free time in school?” Their answer? Hang-out! Many hang-out on the third floor railing while others take it easy in the smoking area yet at the same time others relax in the Mall. Hang-outs which are not too favorable are the general vicinity of discipline, classrooms and the bathrooms. Between 10:45 and 12:35 lunch is served. School lunches leave something to be desired. Turkey and gravy, haddockburger, and chicken are the lunches most eaten, while cheeseburger pie, pizza and tuna salad prove to be the worst lunches served in the cafeteria. In these fast-paced times, regular meals are scarce. Therefore, munchies take the place of balanced meals. So much of our weekly paychecks go towards the purchase of chips, candy bars, and pizzas. Munchies which aren’t too popular are chips, health foods, and candy. When we do have time to eat, we usually take the option to spend money and eat at MacDonalds, Burger King, or the Lo-Kai. When funds are limited, people must settle for less favorable places like the school cafeteria, MacDonalds, or Wendys. The reason we go to school is to get a trade education along with academic knowledge. In other words, classes are a vital part of our education. Relat- ed, English and Shop are the three favorite classes while Math, English and Physics top the charts as the three least favorites. Along with going to school and classes, instructors must follow. Mrs. Conole took first place for the favorite teacher while Mr. Gomes and Mrs. Gallagher took second and third place. Weekends go by too quickly so our weekend free-time is cherished. Sunday proved to be the least favorable weekend night while Saturday nights are devoted to hanging around and staying out late. Long weekends, holidays, and summer vacation yield plenty of free time. Going to the beach is one of the most favorite places to go. Hampton is full of excitement and friendly faces while Salisbury is a little closer and York Beach up in Maine pleases the palate for fun and excitement. Salisbury, Wyman’s, and Hampton have been chosen as the least desirable beaches to waste time and spend paychecks. For those who smoke cigarettes, the few that are concerned about less tar and nicotine, smoke the light brands put out by Marlboro, Newport and Winston. Others have acquired a taste for cigarettes after much trial and error. Errors just happen to be Kool, Newport Lights and Camels. This ends our SENIOR SURVEY done mid-year in the class of 1982. Years from now, when you turn the pages of this book you’ll realize that Led Zeppelin wasn’t your ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and AC DC didn’t really electri- fy you. You weren’t really ‘Up in Smoke’ about Cheech and Chong, but ‘Superman’ was the one that got you high. A Camaro might have had more horsepower but a Pinto would’ve saved money. And when you’re hungry, all you’ll be able to think about is the school cafeteria and cheeseburger pie. When it comes to teachers, you’ll think of Mrs. Conole. But most of all you’ll realize that your high school years were the best ones of your life. A Day In The Life 6 : 00 - 8:30 KS i, Wake me up when class is over. Let’s see . . . which one mixes best with Southern Comfort. 8 T v Hey look - a stereo Big Dave didn’t get yet. You wanna make what kind of a film?! m a I hope they don ' t notice my crib sheet. All of you should be extremely proud of that diploma which carries with it a lifetime of personal skill that is yours to use to the best of your ability. Your individual discoveries and successes will quickly dim the memories of today, howev- er, they will never erase the talent and pride you will always possess. The students from the Class of 1982 have survived many changes and challenges during the last four years that have given all graduates the character and strength l to endure. Your Freshman year represented the last year of the 45- 15 year-round k school schdule. The transition, which affected your family and work schedule, was handled with ease. After a fairly normal Sophomore year, your Junior year % brought with it vigorous competition in the Merrimack Valley Athletic Confer- % ence and the first year impact of Proposition 2 ' A. Again, your desire and spirit % carried you through another measure of adversity. However, the true test of % courage was encountered when you received your staggered schedule in the % summer before your Senior year. The display of cooperation and understand- % ing by the Class of 1982 helped the total school population ensure the success of this new system, which saved many school programs. The Greater Lowell communities, public institutions, children, and the elderly have also had the benefit of sharing your generosity, skill and love. The many community projects, school fairs, and the simple every day contact with all people from the District have made this area a better place in which to live. As you now pursue your individual goals and many new personal experiences, please remember all of those people who provided those moments of encouragement and understanding. Never forget those intangible lessons that you have learned during the last four years that have so quickly passed, and always keep that unique perspec- tive and style that have made the Class of 1982 truly special. You might say that The Official Yokie Handbook is living, tangible proof that the GLRVTS Network works. Ask one staff student for help, and he coops another friend, and bef ore long you realize why Greater Lowell is 1 . Greatful as I am to everyone, there is simply not enough space to enumerate every contribution as I would like. There are several, though, who. must be thanked especially. The advi- sors and coaches for all their assistance and cooperation; Carol Shabouian for all his expertice in silk-screening; Martha and Mary for their nimble typing skills; and Lois Starbird for her patience and understanding, without that this book would not exist. Many thanks to my staff of students, and most especially to Debbie and Judy for being there through the rough times; and Diane St. Sauvier for her endless hours of layout. I must also mention the juniors who have begun their training for the 1983 yearbook, Sally LeBlanc, Diane Desrouchers, and Kim Marques. Next year’s book should be the best ever. w j - ..
