Mr. McDonough has been a member of the Lowell School Committee since 1941 and a member of the Greater Lowell Regional Technical School Committee since its inception in 1970. He served in the Air Corps during World War II as a Master Sargeant. He has twice served as Vice Chairman of the School Committee. A Lowell native, Mr. McDonough has become a political institution as the voice of the school children in the Greater Lowell Area. Within the community, he pioneered teacher qualification, women ' s rights, CPR, law education for children, and vocational education. He has served under twelve different mayors and eight different superintendents. As a result of his long service, he has voted for nearly all of the teachers, administrators and other workers now employed in the Greater Lowell School District. Mr. McDonough is a retired Deputy Sheriff of Middlesex County, a retired Court Officer of the Massachusetts Superior Court System, and a Certified Insulation Estimator Energy Conservation Technician. For six years, he served as a Trustee of the Tewksbury State Hospital under appointment by Governors Furcolo and Volpe. Furthermore, as a father of four, Clement McDonough has come to realize that the hope for the future is in the nurturing and educating of our youth. This year Clement McDonough was unanimously recommended for life membership in the Massachusetts Associ- ation of School Committees. This honor was the MASC ' s way of recognizing and formally showing appreciation for his many years of dedication in the Greater Lowell area and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. - We the class of 1981, wish to further extend gratitude to this champion of quality education and true friend of students. School Committee Top Row Left to Right: Harold O. Bell Jr. Bernard M. Bettencourt Edward J. Bishop Jr. James C. Dadoly Daniel P. Kane John F. Ryan Left: Michael J. Sullivan Congratulations to the Graduates from the Class of 1981 Suddenly, the routine, the bus rides, the early mornings, and busy schedule is over. You are now impatiently involved with a new life. A life of personal discovery and vocational fulfillment that your education and ca refully devel- oped skills will help create. s sss « Superintendent’s Message Remember, however, as you pursue your personal goals, there will be fewer friends to call on and fewer excuses to use. You are now faced with a new experience of relying upon your mind and self-discipline. The element of future failure or success now depends on you. The teachers, guidance counselors, and disciplinarians are no longer there to provide those moments of encouragement and understanding that we all need. Please do not quickly forget those years that you have spent here at Greater Lowell Regional for they probably represent the most significant stage of your development. The students from the Class of 1981 should never forget the many contributions that they have made to the Greater Lowell community. The citizens, the governmental institutions, and the children from this area have all benefited from your enthusiasm, skill and spirit. Never forget all of the good times and services you have received from your community tax dollars and strive to maintain that tradition, which has brought you so far in such a very, very short time. Your brothers, sisters and someday maybe your own children, most certainly deserve the same. William J. Collins Top Row Left to Right: Bruce Carney, Assistant Superintendent Sheila A. When it could have been easy to quit the team because of the losing record, none of the boys chose this path. Instead, all the players worked harder and developed a pride in them- selves and their team mates. Often times the strong character of people come out when they are tossed into a situation where winning is impossible. This was true of the 1980 Gryphons football team. Since J.V. level is basically a learning experience or proving ground for most players the coaches were encouraged by the play and improved play of many players. The team worked well as a unit and each player did his best to insure the team never quit. Many of this year ' s J.V. team will see intensive Varsity action next year and in years to come. R. Considering that most of the boys on this years fresh- man football team had never really played organized football before, it was one of the finest here at Great- er Lowell. Although we won only two games, we were really out of the contest. The most encouraging thing this year for the coaches was that although many times the boys were discouraged they never gave up and maintained a high degree of enthusiasm and competitiveness throughout the year. The coaches were pleased with the steady improvement displayed by the boys. This years team has several players that will see plenty of action the next three years. We began the season won- dering if we would ever score a goal. However, as the season progressed we began to gel and we came up with 3 victories ' -The team seemed to gain experience and momentum with each game. This years team was lead by soph, tri-capt Henry Gagnon who won 3 races in dual meet competition. Henry also won the Northern Area Soph division race, placed 9th in the soph race at the State Coaches meet, and placed 4th in the State Vocational Schools championship lead- ing the team to a very impressive 3rd place finish out of 20 teams. Henry also broke the 3 mile home course re- cord running it in 16:25. Soph, tri-capt. Sean Donnelly ran very close to Gagnon all season and even defeated Henry twice, against Wilmington and at the State divi- sional championship in Boston. The other soph, tri-capt, Steve Foster was also a very valuable asset to the team, consistently scoring in all the dual meets and placing a very respectable 21st out of 116 runners at the State vocational school championship in Walpole. Other runners who ran very well on this years young team were soph. John Duffy, fresh. Tim Roark, soph. Steve No- lan, soph. Bill Pellerin, fresh. Bob Chamberlain, fresh. Tom Campbell, soph. David Gregoire and senior Leo Marquis. With everyone except Leo Marquis returning next year and with the MVC Powerhouse Haverhill losing the top 3 runners who are seniors next years cross country team promises to be much better and may have a chance to win the Vocational Schools State Championship for the first time. 156 Coach Willey 4 [ 11 - Row 1: Tri-captain Sean Donnelly.
