The “Voke is dedicated to teaching skills that will benefit the student as well as society. Throughout our four years at the Voke we have had some difficult moments. In our freshman year we had to choose the trade we felt we would excel in. In our sophomore year we began to learn the basics of our selected trades. In our junior year the work became more difficult and the excuses to avoid it increased. Finally, in our senior year we decided to settle down and soak up as much education as possible, as this was our last chance before the “BIG DAY”. This was also the time that many of us decided to get involved in the various clubs and organizations offered, here, at the Voke. Getting involved not only meant giving up class time (and quite willingly at that!), but giving up spare time and weekends as well. Through good times and bad, the friendships we have gained as a result of club memberships has been well worth it. Here, at Greater Lowell, we have the best equipment, instructors and opportunities available. Many of us will go directly to work as tradesmen and women and others have chosen to further their education in college. We, the class of 1980, would like to set the highest standards for the underclassmen and women to follow. We are the first to graduate in the new decade and the first should always be the best. We are the future craftsmen, designers and professionals. We will feed, clothe and shelter the people of tomorrow. We are responsible for remaking, rebuilding and shaping o ur world into a place we can call our own. our own. With many fond memories and diploma in hand, we say “GOOD-BYE to the Voke and face the future with an edge on life and four years of memories. Soccer will gradually become more popular than some of the more traditional American sports, including football. The philosophy of the Junior Varsity Program here at Greater Lowell has been to teach students the fundamentals of the game of soccer as well as sportsmanship, discipline and self confidence. Everyone is welcome, including males and females, with no ex- perience necessary. FRONT ROW L TO R: Bob Balakin, Bob Garneau, Peter Soiles, Mark Gacek, Co. Capt.: Steve Borodawka, Rick Quintal. The season started slowly with a tie to Tyngsboro and a loss to Mas- conomet, but as the season pro- gressed the girls improved with ex- perience and began playing well to- gether. We were competitive in ev- ery game and had our most exciting game against a very strong Chelms- ford team to which we lost a heart- breaker in overtime. We ' ll greatly miss the contributions of the two senior co-captains, Wendy Mennella and Claire Boucher. Wendy was an aggressive, flexible and spirited play- er, and holds the record for the most goals scored at Greater Lowell with 25. Claire was a key defensive player and had a great anticipation of the game. This year the field hockey will enter the MVC. This will be the first time the team will be in a confer- ence and w look forward to the competition and the season ahead. Highlights of the season includ- ed a win over previously undefeated Northeast, and appearance at Boston Garden, and dutch wins over Northeast and Gr. Lawrence during the last week of the season to qualify for the state tourney. Mark Carroll and C huck McCullough powered the Gryphon of- fence while Bill Coates, Tony Taylor and Ken Comtois were outstanding re- bounders and defenders. Our indoor team is used primarily for winter conditioning of track runners who do not participate in other sports. Running against Lynn Tech, we won our first meet in our brief history. In many other meets, against far more seasoned teams, we faired very well. Our five seniors can especially be congratulated for their efforts in a re- warding season and in upgrading our program. Its primary purpose is to develop future lead- ers for marketing and distribution. Founded in 1947, DECA is the only national club directly affiliated with Distributive Education. The objectives of DECA at the Greater Lowell Re- gional VO-Tech School are; 1. To promote civic consciousness in the youth in our area. 2. To promote social intelligence in our youth. 3. To promote pride in our school, our students, our staff and our community. 4. To provide the opportunity to achieve awards and recognition in a chosen occupational field. 5. To provide an out of the classroom shop activity which reinforces learning. 6. To develop future leaders in Marketing and Distri- bution. Each year DECA becomes involved in local pro- jects and programs which help achieve its objec- tives. Students compete on regional, state and na- tional levels through a competency based assess- ment to test their learning in their chosen occupa- tional field. Through DECA students experience vocational understanding, civic consciousness, social intelli- gence and leadership development. We had a great time at the DECA Eastern Division Fall State Leadership Conference. Twelve members of the Greater Lowell Voke DECA Chapter attended the Fall State Leadership Conference on October 22, 1979 at Dunfey ' s of Flyannis of Cape Cod. Included in those who attended was one of our advisor ' s, Mrs. Marjorie Tanner, our President, Lau- rie O ' Gorman, Vice-President, Donna Klein, Secre- tary, Sharon Quintal, and Treasurer, Doris Comtois. These officers went to several different leadership workshops and seminars. All students participated in workshops which prepared them for competition in categories which interested them. For the past two years, the students and members of the faculty at Greater Lowell Regional Vocational Technical School have participated in a nation-wide student organization called VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of Amer- ica). Nationwide, there are 275,000 students, 2,000 of one are in Massachusetts. Here at GLRVTS we have 230 members in 25 different trade areas. VICA is a club for the vocational student - the student who excels in his or her trade area. VICA is a means for these students to get recognition for the time and effort they have put in to studying and bettering their trade skills. VICA gives these students an opportunity to prove just how good they are in trade competitions by both written and performance testing. It is the ultimate honor for a vocational student to become a VICA gold medal winner.
