Completing the 13:37 season with a record of one Win and one tie was the junior varsity football team. FRESHMEN FOOTBALL Yearlings Complete Grid Season With Good Record 0 FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Ccaches Ray V. Wild and William Gillispie explain fundamentals to yearlings, The freshmen football squad ended their interrupted season with a one tie, one loss re- cord under the tutelage of Mr. Raymond V. Wild and Mr. William Gillispie. With a squad of 40 boys the frosh opened the season by losing to the Derry Area Frosh 6 to O. The Trojan eleven scored in the final minute of the defensive battle by running over a fumble by the Wildkittens. With the outbreak of the flu, three games, with Ligonier, Hempfield and Greensburg were cancelled. Resuming their schedule against the Iean- nette freshmen on October 31, the yearlings played their last game of the season to a 13-13 deadlock. Crossing into the end zone in the first quarter, Iim Ruffner, who raced off tackle, gave the Kittens a 6 to 0 lead. Ieannette scored twice in the second quar- ter and led 13-6 at the half. Late in the third period, quarterback Ruffner heaved a pass to halfback Gene Husnock for the tally. The con- version was good to give the frosh a 13-13 tie. lt is the belief of freshman football coaches that the future varsity gridders mastered skills, learned plays, gained experience and realized the necessity of team work that will put them in a good position for their coming campaign in this sport. 98 z!x '7 '2aa-.1 CROSS-COUNTRY First Row: Hunter, Taylor, Sipe Lazur, Doherty, Eversole, De mcxngone, Schaffer. Uniontown fell second to the Cat squad by a score of 20-35, and the thin- clads picked up their third win at the expense of Penn High by a similar score. Cancellation of two meets with Wilkinsburg and Connells- ville came in the wake of a flu epidemic. Latrobe's senior squad placed tenth in the WPIAL meet, while the jayvees tallied a fifth in their division. TRACK TRACK Under the tutelage of Coach Richard Braun, the Wildcat track suad recently ended their campaign. In initiating the season, the Cats traveled to Schoomaker Hall in participation of the annual tri-sfate coaches meet. Harry Iohnson and Bill Hill both finished in fourth position in the low hurdles and broad jump respec- tively. ln mid-season several boys journeyed to Connellsville for the annual WPIAL Relays. BASKETBALL Latrobe Team Finishes High In Section Competition O GAME STRATEGY is discussed by Freshman Coach Ray V. Wild, Varsity Coach Ralph Forquer and Junior Varsity Ccach Richard Braun. Compiling a successful record of 20 wins and five losses, the Latrobe High School var- sity basketball squad under the tutelege of Coach Ralph Forquer barely missed a first place tie for the section championship, but cap- tured the runnerup spot in the Westmoreland County Tourney. The Cats started their exhibition season by downing Derry, Irwin and Ligonier before suffering their first defeat at the hands of Swiss- vale. They then swept through their final non- league games Without a loss downing Penn Hills, Ligonier, Derry and Vandcrgrift. In the opening Section 2-A encounter, the Latrobe team handed the Ieannette Jayhawks a 61-48 defeat. This was quickly followed by a decisive 70 - 44 v ic to r y over Connellsville. Greensburg won over the- Wildcats 62-46, but the cagers regained their winning ways by de- feating Hempfield 60-59, climaxed by a last second winning shot by Iunior Danny Smith. Continuing their winning ways, the home- towne-rs delt Penn Township a loss, before scoring a one-sided triumph over the North Huntingdon Bulldogs. In the final game of the first half competition, the defending champion Uniontown Red Raiders won over Latrobe in a hard fought match, 79-71. To open the second half, the Cats defeated Ieannette for the second time by a 70-43 count. Preping for the Greensburg encounter, Latrobe 100 Jayvees Compile Perfect Record, Frosh Tie For Crown easily demolished Connellsville 69-46. In the most important win of the season, the Wildcats humbled Greensburg on their home court. 58-43. Returning home the Hempfield Spartans fell 66-39. Penn Township and North Huntingdon were met next and defeated 65-39 and 66-49. These wins enabled the Cats to go into the final game of the season with the outside possibility of gaining the section crown. A win over Union- town in the final would throw the Cats into a three-way deadlock with the Raiders and Greensburg. After a hard fought game, in which the score was tied many times, Uniontown came out on top, 62-58, thereby retaining the title. In the Westmoreland County Tournament, Latrobe gained the runnerup trophy after los- ing to Greensburg in the final 57-48. Seven seniors and two juniors received letters. Se- niors Ted Smith, Iim Bangor, Bob Lightcap, Tom Mailey, Les Campbell, Rich Novak and Sam Smith were honored, as were juniors Dan- ny Smith and Dave McCracken. Bowing to the Wildcats were Irwin, Wil- kensburg, Hempiield, North Huntingdon, lean- nette, Munhall, Uniontown and Greensburg, the latter twice. Indiana provided the strongest opposition to the locals. The outcome of the match was decided by the final bout of the evening. A scant tive points separated the two teams, the tally being 25-20. The matmen also successfully defended their own two-year County title, tallying 58 points to capture their fourth victory in the five-year-old classic. Suc- cessful in their individual bids for county titles were Lionel Frowen, Richard Warren, Richard Martin, Iohn Kalokerinos, Bret Pohland and Ronald Noel. Five local grapplers led the team to their third straight Section II, WPIAL title, as Dick Warren, Richard Martin, Iohn Kalokerinos, Bret Pohland and Ed Pohland copped individual crowns. From this competition, the quintet tra- veled to Washington, Pa., to participate in the District 7 matches. With Richard Martin, Iohn Kalokerinos and Ed Pohland entering the final session, Kalokerinos emerged 133 pound cham- pion. The latter advanced to the state finals and emerge-d as runner-up. Captained by Richard Martin, this year's squad was composed of 12 varsity and 22 iunior varsity members. Fred Warren and Paul Toth aided head manager Ray Finley in caring for sports equipment.
