When a student leaves Latrobe High School after a four year course, he has knowledge stored away for use in many fields. For example, the English classes: here a student requires a knowledge of our standard language. The results are not always visible. but their absence is keenly felt. A class such as General Science, teaches the pupil to think for himself. When one finishes such a course, he leaves able to cope with many problems. ln shop classes, the boys, by means of manual labor, produce actual finished products. Here they receive an education that will be profitable to them after finishing school. And so Latrobe High School continues to turn out young men and women with well- rounded educations. f V 'P gf 3 if 'HM ' -in xnn , 45 4 Af Q if J ' 1 '43 . in Q w ff . Dorothy, Don and Chester. O F President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Student Council C ERS Chester Brighenti Donald Adams Elaine Sartoris Alice Keener Dorothy Palmer At the beginning of the 1952-53 school term, the Iunior Class elecled ofifcers to repre- sent them for the coming year. Chester Brighenti, a member of the football and basketball teams, was chosen president and Don Adams was elected vice-president. Re- cording the minutes of all meetings was Elaine Sartoris, secretary. Money matters were han- dled by the treasurer, Alice Keener. The Class of '54 was represented in the Student Council by Dorothy Palmer. As football season rolled around, the grid- iron showed some new stars such as Bill Mc- Ginnis and Bill Gross. The hardcourt produced Iohn Monchak while Kenny Peffer won fame as a wrestler. Turning from the field of sports, we find Dave McCullough with the male lead in the All- Class Play. Also in the field of dramatics was the lunior Class Play, We Shook the Family Tree. Helping to make it a success were Alice Keener and Larry Kepple. Aiding in turning out B.C.C. 'casts were luniors such as Elaine Keffer, Ron Carey, and Ianet Smith. ln order to make the Prom a suc- cess, the various committees worked untiringly for their last junior event under the watchful eye of Miss Florence Gill, class adviser. Playing for all school activities, the instru- mental department of Latrobe High School pro- vides a necessary part of everyday school life. Football games, holiday parades, the an- nual Spring Concert and assemblies during the year claim the attendance ot the eighty-five piece band. Many hours of practice were spent on intricate drills and skits for the football games, while after school sessions readied the group for the concert. Leading the band is the drum major and the seven high-stepping major- ettes. The local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post presented the school with the American flag and the school colors early this spring. Playing for the school dramatic presenta- tions, regular assembly periods and the Spring Concert is the thirty-four piece orchestra. New musical organizations consist of a Dixieland Band and a dance band called Band X. Also new this year is a brass sextet, com- posed of two trumpets, two trombones, a French horn and a tuba. Representing Latrobe High School at Dis- trict Band were two Band members, while seven students from Orchestra attended District Or- Chestra. BROADCASTING As the chimes rang out each Monday and Thursday morning during home room period, students at Latrobe High School knew they would be brought up to date on all latest school happenings by the school broadcasting class. Reporting on all school activities occupied the talents of the class. Under the supervision of Miss Mary Louise McBride, twenty sopho- mores and juniors did their best at accurately reporting the facts as available at air time. Throughout the year, the class participated in several broadcasts over the local radio sta- tion WAKU. Among these was the presenta- tion of Mugby Iunction, the annual Christmas play. Slcits, Iwritten by any or all members of the staffl poems, or songs made their debut on the semi-weekly broadcast, along with straight news.
