Every person in the cheering auditorium had felt the influence of Mr. M. N. Funk. To some he had been the man behind the desk behind the door marked Principal. To many he was a friend who had helped them in any way he could. To all, he was an outstanding man. During his career at Latrobe High School, he accomplished many things. With the idea that a good plant is necessary to produce good students, he promoted many improvements. The homemaking cottage is still a novel idea in education. The new addition to the school relieved the crowded class- rooms. The well lighted stadium caused students to lift their heads in pride. His work extended into community life. Various organizations were proud to have him as a member. Through his help, these groups became more interested in school affairs. The forensic contests and many awards were the result. The town supported the school in Whatever the students un- dertook. The band, marching gaily down Ligonier Street, is a living memor- ial of the campaign for new uniforms. Mr. Funk's work was quickly noticed by outsiders. For many years he served as president of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. This year he received the position of executive director of the P.I.A.A. Latrobe's loss is the P.l.A.A.'s gain. if k 3 ,- Mi po a- 8 l -2. A ! 1 M s xg. Ll . 5,3 vu.. Head man in the educational system is Dr. Iohn G. Hulton, Superintendent of Latrobe Pub- lic Schools. Mr. Hulton checks the activities of five grade schools and the high school. Newcomer to the school administration this year is Mr. David Snyder, who succeeded Mr. M. N. Funk as principal. Mr. Snyder assumed his post in Latrobe April l after serving as prin- cipal at Midland High School for five and one half years. The new principal graduated from Geneva College and the University of Pittsburgh. He is interested in athletics, and was a former assistant football coach. Seven local citizens serve as members of the Latrobe Board of Education. Mr. Harry M. Reed is president of the organization. Other members include Mr. H. Donald Benford, Mr. Curtis L. Feather, Dr. Iack Hamill, Mr. Francis I. Harvey, Miss Sara C. McComb, and Mr. Sam- uel B. Hummel. Assisting the administration are four secre- taries. Miss Ruth Himler and Miss Anabelle Walters work in Dr. Hulton's office. Miss Mar- ilyn McGuire and Miss Barbara Smith take care of the high school secretarial duties. SUPEBINTENDENT I. G. Th A whir of sewing machines, clicking of a typewriter, tongue-twisting French verbs, and sparks from a spinning machine illustrate the many courses of study open to Latrobe High School students. For those planning to attend college, the college preparatory course is offered. Two divisions, CPA and CPC, provide such subjects as sciences, mathematics, and foreign langu- ages in addition to the English and social studies which are required of everyone. Ready to take their places in the world of business are the graduates of the commercial course. Typing, shorthand, bookkeeping and office practice help prepare these students for jobs as accountants, secretaries, and clerks. The industrial world is the choice of the boys who complete the trade course. The boys are able to pick a field in which to specialize, such as drafting, wood, electric, or machine shop. Future homemakers learn all about running a home at the cottage. Cooking, sewing and other requirements for making a successful home life is taught in the home economics course. ln the general course, only a minimum of subjects are required. Who minded English talks when everyone sang folk songs as part of the program? The slrains of an accordian or a room full of students echoing On Top of Old Smoky helped make Friday English periods something to be laughed over for a long time. Latin emerged from the days of Caesar and was modernized by the active Latiners. Pro- jects clarified such questions as What did a Roman house look like? A congo line of Apollo and the Muses at the annual banquet was a never-to-be-forgotten scene. Trips to Pittsburgh to visit the Nixon or to see the Pittsburgh Symphony enabled students to learn about the side of drama that isn't the movies. Songs from Kiss Me Kate were hum- med for weeks after the trip. The bus ride was always fun and ending with Three Cheers for the Bus Driver. The timed march of the band sent thrills through the proud watchers. The group per- formed in new uniforms, going through intricate patterns between halves at the autumn football games. Forensic season occupied the thoughts of everyone during the annual contests. Gnawed fingernails, jangled nerves and cash prizes were the trademarks of the proud Winners. Debates livened up the social study class- es. Arguments waxed hot as each student exer- cised his freedom of speech. Many new and often humorous ideas were initiated in sessions such as this. Many other things made the 1951-52 year unforgettable in every way: Holy, Holy, Holy at the beginning of assembly, Every Family Has One and Melody Iones rivalling Holly- wood, Latrobe High Victorious and the mov- ing up of everyone at the end of the year. 27 2 if v Q I 4 K K 3 - 2' of . 5-2 -vmft 3 Q 'L an 'lf 5 il L , :Fw 4- K fd ' gh ' - U ' - as 1 s 9 ... . t I - ,1 3' Q , - I '1 Q Q92 w 55,1 I gf 14 OG, T if ,,..-v 'v - U'v A , - in ' 1 i . Class elections were held at the beginning of the school term. Donald Lazarchik took on the president's duties while Robert Mueseler acted in the capacity of vice-president. Ianet McGuire kept bookkeeping records and Gilda Larry tried to decipher her shorthand notes. Student Council Representative, Iames Lantzy, presented the problems of the graduating class at the Council's meetings. Senior thespians starred for the last time in school productions. Patricia Robinsky, Bar- bara Hinger, Ioan Leccia, and Ioseph Tarnazie proved their worth in the theatrical world. On the athletic scene, Andy Keefe, Ronnie Lynch, and Vincent Rizzo are but three of the outstand- ing seniors. Forensic season provided the set- ting for speakers Marjorie Hulton, Patrick Hughes, and Harry Albert to win acclaim. After four years of high school life, the graduates are prepared to go out into the wide, Wide World. Selecting class officers was no hard task, Ioseph Visconti, aided by vice-president Ierry Marco, took over the presidential duties. Also sitting in at the class meetings was secretary. Ioyce Stewart. Frances Peduzzi could be counted on to give the treasurer's report. Down in the Student Council room, Rosemarie Macey represented her class at the monthly Council meetings. Iuniors really went all-out to support the school play. lim Visconti, Kay O'Mara, Robert Steele, and Ronald Cameron took part in the All Class production. In the Iunior Class Play, thir- teen boys and girls were included in the cast. Talent was also displayed in assembly pro- grams as well as local contests. Charles Lem- mon was awarded a S100 war bond as first prize RS . Joseph Visconu ,. ., Ierome Marco , Ioyce Stewart . Francis Peduzzi Rosemarie Macey in the George Washington essay contest. The one big event of the year was the annual prom sponsored by the juniors. Under the direction of Miss Irene Mertz and Mr. Iames Beatty, the junior class spent hours and hours of hard work planning for the big social gather- ing. When April 25 rolled around, the senior guests were feted in a grand manner. In the sports scene, the potential stars of tomorrow showed they could play ball whether it be on a field or court. Dick Domenic, Iames Smart, and Ioe Beredino played varsity football. Indoor athletes included Iames Elder, Fred Bell, Bernard McCracken and Iames Beatty. Perhaps the most memorable event occur- red on Moving-Up Day when the senior presi- dent presented the junior president with the class key. At that moment the juniors officially became the school leaders to carry on the tradi- tions left by the graduating class. -...-1 T H E J U N I 0 , , , Juniors Anticipate Nex HOME ROOM 118 First Row: DeAngelo. Leann Gibson Treasurer Sue Stull Student Council Marylu Swintek After a year of experience, the sophomores proved they had lost their greeness and were now a sophisticated group. In voting for class officers, they used the knowledge they had gained and selected five students to act as their leaders. William Gross read up on parliamentary procedure in order to conduct the class meetings correctly. David McCullough prepared to assist Bill in his duties. Leann Gibson took minutes and Sue Stull kept a record of class dues. Marylu Swintek repre- sented the class at Student Council meetings. Sophomores took their place in extra-cur- ricular activities. Dale Midlam, Alma Pohland, and Mary Katherine Inselmini were prominent in Latin affairs. When the All-Class play was produced, sophomore students turned out to see Ierome Tovo and Sue Stull display their acting ability. Earline Luttner, Dave McCul- lough and Dorothy Reeping took part in assem- bly programs, while other sophomores went out for the various contests during forensic season. Not only did drama take its share of sopho- more students but sports was another field in which the sophs excelled. Iohn Fitzmaurice. Chester Brighenii, and Bill Gross were stars on the football field as well as the basketball court. The sophomore contribution to wrestling was Fred Bridge who battled it out in the 103 pound class. When such social activities as school plays and dances were held, the sophomores could be counted on to attend the events and help make them successful. At the athletic contests, whether it be a home room game or a varsity encounter, the sophomores were there cheering with the rest. All this was in preparation for next year when the outgoing sophomore class will take on the work of upperclassmen. K' ' V ' 1 .1 Y '. M , ir'f1. , i A-ft 4,4 -5 ' 'diff V Aiynlw 1. -. s . .4 .' The FRESHMAN TORY OI-'FIC President Vice President Secretary. , , Treasurer . Student Council With an eager attitude, freshman boys and girls started out their four years of high school life. The first deed which marked their entrance into the adult world was the electing of class officers. When the final votes were tallied, Bob Shust was found to be the first president of the Class of '55, Mary Reed took her job of vice- president seriously, and Beverly Schmucker wrote and rewrote the minutes until they were perfect. In the evenings after school, Dolores Terrini counted the class dues while Allen Goldberg carried out his Student Council duties. Freshmen also made themselves active in extra-curricular activities. Iames Martin and King Hartman appeared in the Christmas play, Why the Chimes Rang, and Mary Reed took part in the Shakespeare assembly. The green- ies acting talents didn't go unnoticed, for Phil- omena Cirucci and Sheila Murphy copped roles E R S Robert Shust Mary Reed Beverly Schmucker Dolores Terrini Allen Goldberg in the All-Class play. Then when forensic sea- son arrived, the freshies went out for the Womans' Club Contest and the Kiwanis Extem- poraneous Contest. Future athletes of L.H.S. were discovered when football and basketball season rolled around. Iames Tito, Iames Rhoades, and Thomas Sarp proved to be all-round stars ior they serv- ed on the frosh football team as well as the basketball team. Other court players were Iack Casey, Ioseph Kubicki, Leroy Myers, and Mickey Mickinak. Wrestling was another sport the freshmen entered. Robert Smith took his place on the grunt and groan team. As the months rolled by, the greenies became a more experienced class. By the time that school was drawing to a close, the fresh- man class had proved its worth. At moving up day exercises, the young freshman class be- came the new sophisticated sophomores. THE FRESHMEN . .. uGreen Years Pass Quickly For Befuddled Frosh I-IOME ROOM 203 Fifst Row: Byers. Go west, young man: go anywhere, but never darken the door ot a newspaper office, was the advice of a famous journalist many years ago. However, aspiring writers from Latrobe High School did not follow this advice as they entered the portals of room 118 their sopho- more year to follow in the footsteps of others before them. Learning the five W's of news- writing proved tedious to Journalism I students, but, when at last the first year was completed. they were happily rewarded with a position on the newspaper staff. get idea for layouts. The newly-acquired staff member received his coaching in making layouts from Chris Slater, Barbara Hinger and Bob Murray, High Post editors. From Iohn Ondriezek, he learned how to deal with advertisers. Ruth Hazlett, business manager, taught the journalists the practical end of the newspaper world. Planning pictures and writing reviews of the year kept the Latrobean staff busy. Under Marge Hulton's supervision juniors snooped into every nook and corner in efforts to locate props for informals. Cheering crowds, shrilling whistles, and a smart stepping band in new uniforms reminds us of football and fun. Strains of You Will Never Walk Alone introduce us to Girls' Chorus III, the most ad- vanced girls' chorus. This group received new black robes and orange stoles which were worn this year for the first time. Girls' Chorus I represents the freshman group in choral sing- ing. If their vocal ability meets the test set up by Mr. Green, they may enter the more ad- vanced chorus their sophomore year. The third group for girls is Girls' Chorus ll. Boys' Chorus ll claims Stout-hearted Men as their theme song. This year the boys went on a short concert tour in the spring. Both Girls' Chorus III and Boys' Chorus ll sang several sep- arate numbers as well as a mixed number at the school concert. Boys' Chorus I is the ele- mentary chorus for freshmen boys. Familiar sights around the school were the members of the Student Council doing the countless jobs of which they have charge. Students belonging to the council represent home rooms and clubs in a democratic fashion. Paul Berenbrok served as head man of the group. Vice-president was Gilda Larry while Betty Panichelle took minutes. Taking charge of the money was the job of Selma Davis. Council members could be seen every- where. The concession stand at the football games was solely the work of this group. The auditorium blossomed with everygreen and holly for the Christmas season entirely through their work. The Student Council sponsored special assemblies, which brought a variety of artists to the school. Three dances, lost and found department, and the spelling contest were additional functions of the group. Behind the scenes, the members also con- tributed their services. The art collection was kept shining bright by energetic scrubbers. They ushered at various events such as Eighth Grade Day, Parents' Night and Freshman Day. Ticket sales to all events and the all-class play were also under their supervision. The annual Council gift to the school was presented in assembly this spring. Although the Wildcat gridders did not post an impressive season as far as the won and lost column is concerned, the Orangemen were never taken lightly by any opponent. The Golden Eagles of Derry Township spoiled Latrobe's initial encounter in the new Memorial Stadium, trouncing the Cats, 12-0. Townshipper Iohn Zubaty's smashing line bucks led the way to a well earned triumph for the Eagles. A favored Penn High eleven invaded the Wildcat den the following week, and were dealt a surprising 18-6 setback. Iunior Dick Domenic scored the first local tally in Memorial Stadium, climaxing an 87 yard drive with a four yard sprint. Domenic, who starred with LATROBE MEMORIAL STADIUM K his sensational open field jaunting, also ac- counted for the second marker from the seven yard line. Guard Don Weiers pounced upon an Indian fumble in Penn's end zone for the remaining touchdown. Unable to cope with the tremendous offen- sive power of the Donora Dragons, Latrobe tast- ed defeat again in the next classic, bowing 32-2. The Dragons, paced by Iohn Thomas and Valdis- serri, encountered little difficulty in humbling the Cats. Merle Musick registered the only La- trobe marker by blocking a Donora punt in the end zone for a safety. Gridders' ction lairobe's Freshmen and Iayvee football teams both compiled fair season records last fall, as the Freshmen won one, lost three, and tied one, while the Iayvees won three and lost two. ln their first year of interscholastic compe- ti'i:Jn the Freshmen showed well against keen competition. Greensburg dropped the Latrobe first year boys by a 20-O score. Next, the Frosh tied Ieannette B-B, but were again beaten by Greensburg by a 19-S count. Winning the first and only game of the season the Freshmen dropped Connellsville by a commanding 33-0 score. Victory was short-lived as Ieannette a gain dropped the little Cats by a 14-0 score. I.atrobe's Iayvees in their five game sche- dule Won three games and lost two. Forquer. Starting off, the Cats topped a rangy Penn High quintet 52-46, only to succumb to the Irwin Black Knights 60-40, in the second contest. The Orangemen then proceeded to rack up four consecutive victories over Uniontown 42-32, Connellsville 62-32, Brentwood 45-33 and Penn 58-38. Lady Luck at this point, turned her back as the Cats dropped a tough 52-48 overtime re- verse to the Alumni. The Rankin Iackrabbits handed the Cats a 56-41 lacing which rounded out the pre-season schedule. t b a I I Omngeinen Display Baske THE BASKETBALL COACHES dis- cussing cage tactics are freshman coach Pat Wolfe, varsity mentor Ralph Forquer and jayvee tutor M. A. Barron. The 40-38 heart-breaker at Ieannette and 50-43 loss to the Greensburg Golden Lions seemed to crush the Latrobe sectional hopes. A faint spark still glimmered in the Orangemen's 60-58 decision over Derry Twp., but successive defeats by Ramsay 52-50, North Huntingdon 55-52 in overtime and Hurst 52-45 killed all Cat hopes. A revenge-filled second half saw the Cats falter only once, at the hands of Greensburg 56- 48, while garnering victories over Ieannette 59- 48, Derry Twp. 68-62, Ramsay 78-38, North Hunt- ingdon 58-50 and Hurst 52-45. Fate again turned her head as the Wildcats dropped a 42- 41 thriller in the County Tourney to Greensburg, ringing down the curtain on the 1951-52 cage season. Seven opponents furnished the Iayvees with their nine wins. These teams included Connellsville, Derry Township, North Hunting- don, Ieannette, Latrobe Freshmen, Penn and Mt. Pleasant, the latter two being dropped twice. The Kittens lost to Irwin, Uniontown, Brent- wood, Rankin, Ieannette, Derry Township and North Huntingdon once, while Greensburg and Hurst dropped the Iayvees twice. The Latrobe Freshmen in their first year of interscholastic competition won six out of 14 in regularly scheduled contests, but were also downed by the Iayvees, in a preliminary to the Varsity-Alumni encounter. The Freshmen dropped South Huntingdon and Sewickley twice, while beating North Huntingdon and Greensburg each once. CALL FOR ACTION echoes through gym as another game gets underway. Mino With only two lettermen returning to the fold, the golf team, under the tutorship of Coach Robert E. Cook faced a tough rebuilding job. George Vargo and Bill Fowler were the only L winners back to spearhead the Orange divot-diggers through a tough Section IV slate. The Cats' hopes were bolstered and their future insured, though, when an enthusiastic group of frosh clubbers turned out for the sport. Mr. Rise's veteran tennis squad recorded another brilliant campaign on the clay courts. An experienced outfit headed by a host of seniors, Iim Roof, Roger Beidler, Pat Hughes, Iohn Demangone and Charlie Nolf continued to dominate net action in the district. Girls' tennis also jumped into the sportlights around Latrobe High School. f 1 GOLF TEAM First Row: Vargo, Borza, Kovalcik, McCracken, Por- embka, Walker. Second Row: Sedlacko, Kon- koly, Fowler, I. Westfall's grapplers finished the season with no triumphs to their credit, the Orange matmen displayed extraor- dinary fight and spirit through-out the entire campaign. Dormont dropped the Cats in the initial en- counter by a 52-5 margin. The Wildcats also bowed to Blairsville, 43-5, in the second tussle. However, following these two matches, the Latrobe wrestlers steadily began to improve with each match. Ieannette and Greensburg both easily defeated the Cats in the initial en- counters. The return engagements, however, were much closer, with the Ieannette match not being decided until the final contest. Lack of experience was the principal cause of the Wildcats' poor season. Within the next five years, with enough experience under their betls, Latrobe should turn out some fine teams. Cross country, in its second year of schol- astic competition at Latrobe High School, had a respectable campaign as the distant runners split even in four dual meets. In their first meet with Altoona, the Orange sprinters home debut was spoiled as they lost by a 23-32 score. In their next outing the run- ners won their first meet by trouncing Penn by a 22-23 deficit. The fleetmen continued their winning ways as they trounced New Kensington by a com- manding 16-39 score. In their last regularly scheduled dual meet the Cats lost by a close 26-29 margin to Connellsville. George Lazur emerged victorious in the PIAA meet to highlight the season. Iim and Ieep Hauser and Fred Sandacz also made many good showings during the season. CROSS COUNTRY WRESTLING SQUAD First Row: Smith, T. Murphy Bridge, Paxton, Hughes Noll. Mattock.
