COURSE DESCRIPTION A Health Assistant must become proficient in taking the temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and in general to assist the health team in departments throughout the hospital. During the course the student will become familiar with office duties such as telephone technique, typing and filing, care of instruments and equipment. Areas of concentration will include anatomy and physiology, nutrition and basic nursing procedures including first aid. On the job training includes affiliation with Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital and the Scalp Level Home ofthe Brethren. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES The fact that well-trained health workers are in continuous demand makes it easier for those who do have the necessary training both to get a job and keep a job. Most health assistants work in hospitals as ward clerks or aides. Health De- partments, health agencies. research foundations, dental offices, medical offices and convalescent hospitals plus being prepared for the ex- panding field of health services.

'Ihey leam to give per- manent waves. shape with scissors or razor, style, tint, rinse, set, straighten, and bleach the hair. They also give manicures, scalp and facial treatments, and provide makeup analyses. Students are taught salesmanship, howto maintain tint and permanent wave records, trade mathe- matics, ethics, and good public relations as they pertain to beauty culture. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Students can obtain a State License as a beautician after completion of the required number ol' hours and passing the state examination. He leams how to size. layout, and install electric, gas. and oil lired hot air, hot water. and steam sys- tems. His training will include wiring, plumbing, refrigerant piping, and sheet metal fabrication necessary to complete an entire heating and air conditioning installation. He will be introduced to humidiliers, de-humidiliers, and air cleaners. He will leam basic trouble shooting. repair and maintenance of heating. cooling and air handling equipment used in residential. commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. Each student will install several complete sys- tems before graduation. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Job opportunities are listed as excellent for qualified workers. Every house- hold, apartment, factory, school, hospital, and office will require the services of heating and air conditioning service- '24 shops a Labs men for repair and replacement of present equipment as well as new installations.
