Faculty ................ Clubs .................. Sports ................. Student l ife .......... An important milestone in the history of Johnstown High School was reached in the 1898-1899 school year, when the first edition of the Spectator, volume 1, number 1, was published. While attending classes at the Somerset Street School Building, which had been dedicated as a new high school in 1892, the students had the idea of establishing a school journal in which they could record the advancement of their studies. The first Spectator, dated December 1898, featured the motto, “Home first, the world afterward, and highlighted the history of Johnstown High School. The editor-in-chief of these historic first editions was Harry F. Confer, class of '99. The moving of the high school to a new building on Market Street in September 1899, ushered in yet another realm of Spectators. On the first anniversary of Spectator publication, December 1899, a seasonal cover design was featured. This was the point in Spectator history when the idea of designed covers began. Cover designs of the monthly editions, published during the school term until May 1926, often featured the topics of football, seasons of the year, holidays, Johnstown history, and patriotism. Sports was an important part of the Spectator in February 1902, when the first basketball team of JHS was recognized in an article. Baseball, football, and track were covered in a by-line called Athletics in these early Spectators. In November 1903, the first sports picture ever to appear in the Spectator was published-the 1903 relay team. It then became traditional to include sports in both photographs and writing in the Spectator. The first picture of graduating seniors was included in the Spectator of May 1905. A photograph of the group, posing on the steps of the high school, was printed in the front of the book. When individual senior portraits were included in the class album of the June 1915 Spectator, photography became a more integral part of the book. Our Spectators have a wide and colorful past. Throughout the years they have greatly changed and evolved into the yearbook we know today. Many editors have pondered the problems of organizing their books, many staff members worked long hours to produce a book they would cherish a lifetime, and that future generations would reflect upon. It cannot be denied that every issue of the Johnstown High Spectator was a work of which to be proud, well worth the efforts that were spent on them. This, the latest edition of the Spectator-'83, is only one book in a series that spans almost 85 years. We know not how many more books that bear the name Spectator will be published, just as our predecessors knew not, but the Spectator will always be a symbol of those precious school years, of pride for our alma mater, and for that hallowed institution: Johnstown High School. University of Pittsburgh The past three years at Johnstown High School have been times of change. The graduating class of 1983 has taken these changes in stride and has upheld the traditions of our school. You have to be examples for the underclassmen who will follow you. You are going to graduate at an economically difficult time, but your education at Johnstown High School will give you the advantage in your future job market. I urge you, the Class of '83, to further your education. You will have to make many sacrifices for things of value in your life, but do not get discouraged too readily—persevere. 55 Donald B. Art is everywhere—not just in the Art Department, remarked Art Club president Holly Jones. This school year, the J.H.S. Art Club did a fine job promoting that philos- ophy. Directed by Mr. Varmecky, Mr. Po- zun, and Miss Kinol, the club gave prospec- tive artists the opportunity to fulfill their own artistic needs, as well as those of the school. Projects to beautify the school for this year were as follows: creating a mural for above the auditorium, making an art case in the front lobby, and welding a sculpture for the courtyard. A special activity the club also participated in was helping make sets for the movie All The Right Moves. On the lighter side of the group's itinerary was a trip to New York City in June. In order to finance their journey, the club participated in fund- raisers throughout the school year ranging from dances, a volleyball game, and a car wash, to the selling of candy, subs, and piz- zas. The year was highly successful for the group and proved quite beneficial. 68 Row 1: Un Yong, Kang, Duk Kang, Thanh Nguyen. Row 2: Hiep Ly, Marie Kang, Long Ly, Tri Nguyen. Row 3: advisor- Mrs. Kissel Johnstown High School was fortunate to have gained a new and unique club this past year. The Asian Club, under the direction of Mrs. Kissel, was formed with the purpose of broadening the horizons of American life for its members, all of whom hope to become U.S. citizens. During the course of the year, empha- sis was placed on the seat of the American government—Washington, D.C., where, at the time of this writing, the club was anxiously an- ticipating a trip. In order to finance their edu- cational journey, the club initiated several fund-raisers to help defray the cost. They in- cluded candy, stationery, sub and pizza sales, as well as a car wash. For all involved with the Asian Club, the school year proved to be a more rewarding and beneficial experience. Our Asian Club has given us new Americans a chance to meet and talk together. We're learn- ing more everyday, and we're so happy to have been a part of J.H.S.I exclaimed Marie Kang, president. 69 Row 1: Mr. Croman, Brian Toth, Don Harr, Dan Russell, Mark Surrett, James Frampton, Terry Collier, Don Fockler, Bob Bowers, Donald Grela. The Auto Mechanics Club at J.H.S., comprised of 39 prospective mechanics, performs all types of general auto repairs, ranging from brakes to engine tune-ups. We formed our club to try to give our shop more pride in what we do and how we do it! remarked Mr. Gro- man, auto mechanics advisor. The goal of this year's club was to raise funds for new shop jackets. Projects initiated by the group for this pur- pose included a pizza and sub sale, and a doughnut sale. Through coo- peration and hard work, the school year proved quite successful for the club. The Building Trades and Mainten- ance Club has become a very concrete part of J.H.S. In the words of club presi- dent Bob Sabo, If it wasn't for B.T. M., the school would fall apart! Orga- nized to promote responsibility and to assert leadership, B.T. M. has done much to make positive changes for the building's image. Skills practiced among its members included brick lay- ing, carpentry, welding, plumbing, and electrical work. Projects for the 1982- 83 school year ranged from donating three hand-made rocking horses to the pediatric wards of the area hospitals, to building a new modernized wood shop where the old drafting facility was lo- cated. They also assisted in the renova- tion work that was done at Meadow- vale Elementary School by painting of- fices and putting up walls. The club, under the direction of Mr. Dixon, proved to be quite beneficial to the school because instead of hiring help to do these necessary jobs, B.T. M. themselves did the work and gained first-hand experience in the areas of their interest. 71 ecaase ease Row 1: Bill Hearn, Dana Singer, Carolyn Veale, Erin Kabler, Kevin McLeary. A rather interesting thought of Mortimer Collins, submitted by club president John Slenska, may well be coined as the motto of the Chess Club. There are two classes of men; those who are content to yield to circum- stances, and who play whist; those who aim to control circumstances, and who play chess. Organized to promote the sport of chess, the Johnstown High Chess Club did just that this school year. The members participated in many matches including the first J.H.S. Intramural Chess Tournament, the Altoona-Johnstown Chess match, the Pennsylvania State Scholastic Championship, and the 1983 Grand Finale. By these matches and through practice, the club members were afforded many opportunities to enhance their personal playing skills, and were provided with healthy competition. Under Miss Loutsenhizer, advisor, the club participat- ed in several fund-raising activities such as sponsoring a St. Patrick's Day Dance and con- ducting the sale of Reese's Peanutbutter Cups. The profits from these helped to send players to state matches. ©sea Row 1: Lisa Miller, Carol Fetzko, Misty Mitchell, Sandy Conley, Brenda McAfee, Connie Kuzma, Annie Gavin, Darlene Delso. Means Business (free enterprise — it's working). This is the slogan of the Distributive Educa- tion Clubs of America. The J.H.S. chapter prepares its members for careers in the areas of management, and in marketing and distribution through participation in district, state, and national competition. By partaking in the competition, D.E. students expand their insight in the category they are interested in and gain valuable experience. Funds obtained from a sub and pizza sale and a bake sale helped to curtail the costs of attending the events. D.E. members, who are advised by Mr. Reese, also raise money and gain first-hand knowledge of the retail world through working in and operating the school store. D.E.C.A. students are optimistic that they can reach and then surpass their employment goals in life. 71 Row 1: Betty Jo Unger, Noreen Myers, Stephanie McIntosh, Cherie Tennis, Martha Canini, Cathy Lugar, Sandy Martinek, Julie Kelly. The Future Business Leaders of America gives its members, who are business students, the opportunity to become involved in various activities such as service projects, field trips, and competition. Members of the J.H.S. chapter, under the direction of Mrs. Mihalic, competed on an individual ba- sis at regional competitions, with the winners advancing to the state compe- tition in Lancaster during May against representatives of other F.B.L.A. chap- ters. Going on a business-oriented field trip and selling senior announcements were among the other items on the club's 1982-83 agenda. Fund-raising projects initiated by F.B.L.A. members this year to limit their expenses includ- ed an M M's candy sale and the an- nual carnation sale on Valentine's Day. The Trojan Forensic League, coached by Mrs. Fisher, provided interested orators with the op- portunity to develop poise and skill in the field of public speak- ing. The group participated in meets at various area schools where they were judged with strict regulations regarding their category of participation. The best two competitors in each category then advanced to district competitions at St. Francis Col- lege in Loretto. Those, who at this point, had polished their art of public speaking to a high degree and survived competition may ad- vance to the semi-finals. They then qualified for state and na- tional competition at the district level. Seniors Tania Brice and Mindy Taylor both placed in com- petition this year. Forensics pro- vides both an educational and re- warding experience for all in- volved this school year—but it also provides more according to team member Michele Weaver. “We don't exist merely for com- petition. Through Forensics, one gains self-confidence and the ability to speak in front of others. 75 m eaaeiiQ paataeaoea Row 1: Lucie LaBuda, Josiane Seeley, Margot Yuran, Angelique Krouse, Anne Selders, Pauline Dunn, Nicole Mekis, Andree Kristoff, Blanche Wargo, Jacqueline Schonvisky, Laure Butler, Amelie Tarbay, Elise Wise, Sabine Myers, Mile. Le Cercle Francais at Johnstown High School this year played an important role as an asset to the French language course. Un- der the sponsorship of Mile. Calderwood, members of the French classes were eligible to become club members, and through ac- tive participation in the club's events, to in- crease their background in the people, cus- toms, and language of France. To celebrate the Christmas holiday, the club planned and enjoyed une soiree de Noel and later spent time preparing for one of the highlights of the year concerning the foreign language courses—the annual language banquet, which was scheduled for March 14. The ban- quet is conducted every two years. A special presentation was also included in the itiner- ary of Foreign Language Week. On the light- er side of the club's activities was un match de volleyball against the German Club which was enjoyed by both groups. At the time of this writing, une excursion was also being considered. The French Club instilled in its members an appreciation for the French cul- ture, and a well-known quote submitted by club president Wendy Sedei perhaps com- bined the aims of the group. Die Deutsche Verien, or more familiarly the German Club, enjoyed an eventful year at J.H.S. The club's main intent is to enrich the appreciation of its members in both Ger- man culture and customs. The groups in- volvement in the biannual language banquet this year helped to accomplish this goal. As part of their presentation at the banquet, some club members sang the traditional folk song Bruder Johann in German, while others performed in a band. They also opened and closed their meal with a verse in the native German tongue. Other highlights on the club's 1982-83 agenda included pic- nicing at Yellow Creek State Park, and vying against the French Club in a volleyball game. The following quote by the writer Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, submitted by Ger- man Club vice president Kevin McLeary proves to be quite thought-provoking: Wer eine fremde Sprache nicht kennt, weiss nichts von seiner einigen. By working with the Johnstown Rotary Club, Interact members at J.H.S. assist many charity groups in the area through valuable service projects. A highlight of the Interact Club's 1982-83 schedule was their participa- tion in Career Day, which was held at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory along Walters Avenue during March. Also, each Wednesday two Interact students from Johnstown High attended a Rotary Club lun- cheon to listen to a distinguished speaker. When they weren't helping others, club members, who are under the direction of Mr. Davis, amused themselves by partaking in the following club-sponsored activities: sled riding, horseback riding, and having a Fun Night. Interact is a club to benefit ev- eryone, said club official Gina Arcurio. Through the ex- ample of the Johnstown Kiwanis Club, which sponsored the organization, members learn the meaning of service- able and positive citizenship. This year, the Key Club completed a busy sched- ule which included the following ac- tivities: ringing bells for the Salvation Army; selling daffodils for the Ameri- can Cancer Society, and paper lilies for the Easter Seal Society; sponsoring the J.H.S. Blood Donor Day; conducting a car wash for the Leukemia Society; and assisting the Kiwanians with Pancake Day. The club, which is under the di- rection of Mr. Raco, planned a field trip for the end of the year with funds they raised from a poinsettia sale and a fudge sale. 79 vmm mw Row 1: Jeanette Percinsky, Judy Fockler, Steph Masoryak, Linda Myers. The Library Staff at Johnstown High is very valuable to Mrs. Falvo, librarian, and Mrs. Asure, library secretary, in organizing and smoothly operating the school library facility. Interested students are offered the opportuni- ty each year to devote their extra time to this school service. Staff members' duties include checking out books, magazines, and pam- phlets; shelving books; delivering admits; and writing overdue slips. They are also expected to maintain the materials of the library in an or- derly manner, so that they will be immediately available for use when needed. Their efforts make the use of the facility more pleasant and easy for all. Latonya Barksdale, a senior member of the library staff, expresses the following sen- timents to the underclassmen who will in the future serve on the staff. I wish you all the luck and fun I enjoyed while being a member of the staff. 80 eeetew The junior members of the National Honor Society, listed alphabetically, are as follows: Rae Ann Albertson, Debra Balaschak, Cynthia Dyda, Mary Dee Cawel, Mary Golden, Brian Grus, Jennifer Hoover, Dana Kawchak, Diane Kop- chik, Theresa Legath, Sharon Lucas, Catherine Lugar, Kim- berly Martyak, Katerina Mavrodis, Lisa Mayko, Susan Murray, Kimberly Nagrant, Tammy Owens, Toni Penna, Aileen Petak, Michael Rok, Mary Schellhammer, Susan Smith, Cherie Tennis, Denise Yuran. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to bring the outstanding academic achievements of high school students to the attention of their classmates, parents, and community. Membership is open to students who maintain a required grade point average of at least 3.5. Fifteen percent of the senior class, and ten percent of the junior and sophomore classes make up the organization. The National Honor Soci- ety here at J.H.S. belongs to the Touchstone Chapter, and is under the direction of Miss Solarczyk. The highlight of the year for the club was the annual banquet and induction ceremony on April 25, held to recognize the efforts of these hard-working and dedicated J.H.S. scholars. The selling of buttons, pens and pencils, life-savers, Valentine lollipops, and other items helped members to finance their functions. The members of the National Honor Society have upheld the ideals of this club and will continue to lead productive and fulfilling lives, remarked N.H.S. president Tom Mo- lenda. 81 caocaea seeoow eocaoeos t The senior members of the National Honor Soci- ety, listed alphabetically, are as follows: Sharon Barber, Jennifer Beidle, Timothy Birus, Harold Boerstler, Craig Bowser, Tania Brice, Mary Lou Brilhart, Philip Cynar, Luke Demo, David Felix, Dianne Frye, Susanna Gjurich, Rose Colojch, An- nette Hales, Sharon Karmanocky, Theresa Klesch, Mary Beth Knapp, David Kovalchick, Stephen Kristofco, Melissa Lengyel, Amy Lentz, Catherine Lishka, Jennifer Lorditch, Lari Matten, Kevin McLeary, Kimberly Mihelic, Thomas Molenda, Jeanne Muchesko, Dorothy Nicandro, Heidi Piru- kowsky, Jacqueline Roper, Karen Rozich, Lori Sal- via, Rebecca Scholtz, David Shook, Karyn Siehl, Laura Singel, John Slenska, Christine Stahl, Gerald Szczur, Bruce Thiel, Eber Verhovsek, Diane Viel, Daren Wade, Kimberly Williams, Nancy Yagodich, Patricia Yuran, Rosemarie Zajdel. 82 s omBoeac, eassaae Row 1: Dana Kawchak, Michele Weaver, Joyce Howard, Patty Kyler, Kim Cooper, Mr. Skeleton, Harold Boerstler, Kim Mihelic, Michelle Berry. By allowing members to be exposed to the various phases of the medical field and by provid- ing them with valuable experience in their areas of interest, the Para-Medical Careers Club has become a valuable part of the J.H.S. club scene. Several health-related activities the club participated in this year included a visit from speakers of the Can- cer Society; and a tour of the lab, radia- tion oncology, and emergency facilities at Memorial Hospital—these proved to be educational and informative. A trip was also planned for the end of the year. To help finance their projects, the club, un- der the direction of Mrs. Kyler and Mrs. Hare, participated in Christmas and Val- entine's Day lollipop sales, a peanutbutter Easter egg sale, as well as car washes. The purpose of the Quest Club, which is sponsored by Mr. Davis, is to enable club members to broaden their horizons by allow- ing them to participate in activi- ties they would otherwise not have experienced. This year's schedule included a fun night, several sled riding days at U.P.J., a roller skating party held during March, and a jaunt to Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh to see the panto- mime of the world renound ex- pert Marcel Marceau. A trip to New York City, in affiliation with the Art Club, was planned for ear- ly June. Fund-raising projects such as a sub and pizza sale, a stuffed Easter Bunny sale, and a car wash helped curb the club's expenses. Senior club member Karen Kirkhimer sums up the or- ganization's main intentions with the following quote: Quest Club is an attempt to take some roads we may not have ventured upon without our club. 84 aeenoQ aewsowBe Row 1: Sue Gjurich, Sandy Devorick, Chris Stahl, Kelly Kanuch, Roxanne Brazill, Ray Jones, Gina Ar- curio, Jill Williams, Doug Maurer. Their itin- erary also included the imple- mentation of the prom, sched- uled at the Ramada Inn, and the post-prom, scheduled at the Holiday Inn; and the organiza- tion of graduation, conducted on June 24. The annual maga- zine and record sale, dances, a volleyball game between the senior class and student coun- cil, a basketball game pitting seniors against juniors, and a T- shirt sale enabled the senior class to meet their financial ex- penses. All the natives contribute toward the production of a decorated word and picture book, called the Rotatceps, which will be scrutinized and emulated by the human race for generations to come. The inhabitants value discussion and punctuality, both of which are necessary in preparing the Rotatceps. Distinguished tribal personnel are as follows: Miss Robinson, care taker; Sue Gjurich, superintendent; Karen Birk- himer, vocal director; Paula Tomko and Tim Ryan, paparazzi; Phil Cynar and Dave Felix, stat- isticians; Dottie Nicandro, interior decorator; Michele Weaver, Olympic Games coordinator; Bob Knipple, custodian; Valerie Rogers, Kelly Kanuch, and Gina Arcurio, engravers; and Tony Ivock, Nancy Knox, Cathy Lishka, Holly Matisik, Beth Szewczyk, Bruce Thiel, and Anita Trovato, the village's backbone. “Through the total co- operation between the talented members of my staff, the 1983 Rotatceps will be an out- standing creation, commented Sue Gjurich. The group was very active this school year and offered a potpurri of func- tions for J.H.S. Highlights of the year includ- ed a Christmas door decorating contest and dance; Homecoming Week, co-sponsored with Senior Class representatives; the Youth Food Council, which gave students a chance to express their opinions on cafeteria menu policies; pep assemblies; and the Battle of the Classes. Student Council holds no specif- ic fund-raisers, although with the money they made from the Homecoming dance, they planned to purchase a beneficial item for the school. The effort, commitment, and hard work of the staff resulted in five high- quality publications that provided a means of presenting the news of J.H.S. and promoting school activities. Through participation on the Centralizer staff, students were exposed to all phases of journalism: writing, editing, layout, artwork, copy, and corrections. Under the guidance of Mrs. Hnatkovich, staff members became more adept at the preparation of the school paper and polished their skills to a high degree as was evident in the professional qual- ity of the Centralizer. To aid in the rising costs of publishing the paper, the staff initiated sev- eral activities to raise money including the sale of happy ads for various editions, and a Valen- tine's Day candy contest. Both were successful. In commenting on their years on the staff, co- editors Nancy Knox and Lisa Rager both agree, Many people do not realize the effort and pride put into the paper—it's difficult to please everyone, but we try our best! 90 eaoeae etas Row 1: Joyce Howard, Karen Voeghtly. Johnstown High is fortunate to have a school service organi- zation such as the Ushers Club. Directed by Miss Keller and Mrs. Kissel, members offered their time selling tickets and giving out programs for public concerts given at J.H.S. and for the annual school musical. The club members also acted as tour guides of the school dur- ing open house. Their efficien- cy and friendly attitude made it more pleasant for the public when attending these func- tions at our building. Two spe- cial activities on the club's agenda this year were the spring banquet at Rizzo's and a trip. To defray the cost of these, the club held various fund-raisers including a Tootsie Roll and lollipop sale, as well as the sale of subs and pizzas. The valuable service of the Ushers Club played an important part in this school year, and club president Sheri Reed offered the following thought: Ushers Club is always looking for members who are willing to serve the school in this capac- ity. tfoTOQffle Row 1: Miss Keller, Barb Higgins, Karen Golden, Val Rogers. The girls throughout the year participated in various school activities and several community service projects, such as collecting money for U.N.I.C.E.F., and helping with a collection of canned goods for the Salvation Army. The annual spring banquet and a field trip to Washington, D.C., were two high- lights of the club's itinerary for the school year. In order to diminish the cost of their annual field trip, the girls held fundraisers that ranged from a sub and pizza sale to a candy sale. The group enjoyed all their activities which proved to be both fun and rewarding. The sentiment was re- flected in the thoughts of Karen Golden, club president, as she commented, 1983 Y-Teens offi- cers will remember this year as the best. Special thanks to Mrs. Mihalic and Miss Keller who made the year a success. Best of luck to next year's officers! The team, under the direction of Denny Cruse spent long hours of practice to polish and perfect their skills, as well as learning to work and play to- gether; complimenting each individual's abili- ties. The team qualified for Districts and partici- pated in the first round of the triple-A playoffs against Altoona. On6 outstanding feature of the season was the impressive record of serves set by the girls, which was parallel to the goal set by the team to have only one bad serve per game. But by far the best girls were true power- houses—filled with determination they skillful- ly handled the the most difficult situations of the game. The girls are looking forward to an- other successful season in 1984. 121 SP6CTMOR H-N.L OF FhM€ BILLIE HAWTHORNE EBER VERHOVSEK Football Girls' Basketball, Volleyball, Softball DAVID NAU KIM PAULIKOVSKY Baseball Tennis JOE PISARCZYK PHIL MERRIWEATHER Track Track 123 MW€TIC hWhRDS 124 125 UDENT LIFE ACTIVITIES A Row 1: Spencer Wilson, Christopher Williams, Peter Kozak, William Gosnell. But then who would give up the chance to dress that comfortably for school? The National Honor Society made it possible for everyone to participate in hat and button, by selling buttons. Majorettes twirled off to a great year. The girls started with two car washes in the summer to raise money for their annual contest in March. In July, practice started for the field shows performed during the football games. Band camp followed with two successful weeks of hard work and practice for both the games and the Majorette Contest. Later in the year, the Trojanettes sponsored two dances which were quite beneficial in defraying contest costs. The Majorettes, as well as their advisor Judy Youchak and co-captains Robin Korber and Gina Arcurio spent many hours to prepare for the big day. The Trojanettes captured 4th place out of 10 squads competing in the contest. The 1982-83 squad, captained by Lari Mat- ten, had an exciting and eventful year. The group won four superior ribbons and a plaque at the Na- tional Cheerleading Camp held at Robert Morris College. Another high point was the Annual Cheer- leading Contest at the War Memorial where the girls had an impressive fourth place finish. BELOW: J.V. The choral department at Johnstown High School did much this year to uphold the high standards of excellence set in past years. Under the direction of Mr. Carl Miller, the concert choir offered much to fulfill the cultural and musical needs of J.H.S., as well as those of the community. Two performances the group looks forward to each year are the annual Christmas and Spring concerts open to the public. Both were quite successful this year. Several highlights of the 1982-83 school year also included the choir's partici- pation in the Tyrone Area High School Invi- tational on April 9, where the group re- ceived a well-deserved rating of outstanding and a first place award in their division; pre- paring and performing a thrilling Broadway musical, this year the delightful comedy- — Marne; and providing musical holiday cheer at the community banks and the reha- bilitation center. A once-in-a-lifetime ex- perience was afforded to the choir when they were asked to perform in the motion picture All the Right Moves shot on location at the former J.H.S. A repetoire of fine cho- ral music was the end product of the deter- mination and hard work by all associated with the group. 154 This year, Winchester, Virginia played host to an array of bands at the Annual Apple Blossom Festival held April 29 through May 1. The Trojan Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Cardenhour and Mr. Arcurio, had the opportunity to participate in the festival where they captured 5th place in parade competition and an award for 2nd best drum major. The J.H.S. silks and rifles were also recognized with an award for the best band front. A marching band show through downtown Winchester opened the festivities which were brought to a close Saturday with a field competi- tion. However, the trip was not all work and no play. One highlight on the lighter side of the itinerary was a visit to Toby's Dinner Theater where a pleasant evening of fine food and entertainment was enjoyed by all. The trip proved to be quite successful and was a true experience for everyone. 157 Row 1: Scott Mikesic, Heidi Piurkowsky, Bob Mishler, Daren Wade, Karen Rozich, Dianne Frye, Sharon Karmonocky, Ed LaBuda, Carolyn Veale, Tracie Evans, Cheryl Hollen, Rachel Dunn, Judy Fockler, Tammy Evanisko, Janna Audey. The production was under the direction of Mr. Carl Miller and Mrs. Louise Fisher, with choreography by Nanette Edwards and assistants Sharon Bossi and Mike Ricchuto. The troupe of young actors spent many long hours of dedicated rehearsal to practice and prepare for the show, but the efforts were well worth the sacrifice as the end product was much enjoyed by all. Leading roles were played by Dianne Frye, Sharon Karmanocky, Brian Keiper, Eddie LaBuda, Karen Rozich and Daren Wade; however, no role could be considered small as the effort, support, and enthusiasm of everyone involved resulted in a high-quality, professional production that the talented individuals of J.H.S. are famous for. Ik Jk 159 160 BLOOD DONOR DAY The annual J.H.S. Blood Donor Day, spon- sored by the Key Club, was held on Tuesday, March 29. In March, Twentieth Century Fox began production on the major motion picture All the Right Moves at various sites in the Johnstown area, including the former Johns- town High School building. The film told the story of a high school football player who hopes to use his athletic talents as a way out of Ampipe, a fictional steel town. The movie starred Tom Cruise as Stef, the young football play- er; Lea Thompson as his girlfriend, Lisa; and Craig T. Nel- son as Vern Nickerson, the coach who hopes to land a position on the football team of a major college. Lucille Ball and her husband Cary Morton were the executive producers of the film, which was directed by Michael Chapman in his directing debut. JHS seniors were offered a once in a lifetime opportuni- ty and were used as extras in the movie. In addition to earning extra money, the students gained first hand ex- perience in the production of a motion picture. They were used in hall and classroom scenes, a pep rally, and as Ampipe football boosters at the big game, filmed at the Point Stadium. 1983 will long be remembered as the year the seniors of Johnstown High School made all the right moves. 201 $50.00 Dr. John R.
