Greater Johnstown High School Johnstown, Pa. Publisher: Josten's American Yearbook Company Advisors: Scott C. McCloud, Janis Davis Editors: Mark Kawchak, Mike Klesch Graphics: Chris Osipov Professional Photography: Cover Studio Chief School Photographer: Lynn Johnson Assistant School Photographers: Mike Klesch, Maureen Lydic, Kim Potts, Greg Molchany TABLE CE Dedication Opening Faculty ____ Seniors Clubs Sports Student Life 2 s members of the last graduating class at Johnstown High School, we would like to dedicate our yearbook to the nearly 32,000 students who call Johnstown Central Senior High School their alma mater. fl' 'll II good things must pass, no matter how permanent we once u=!l felt they were. And so it is with our high school... this landmark along the Stoneycreek River. But although the building will no longer serve as Johnstown High School, we the gradu- ates will still have all the memories and education this school has provided. No one ever can take that away from us. s the class of 1980 joins with the fifty - four classes preceeding it Ll z in leaving Johnstown High, we must all pledge together to keep alive the spirit we shared in being part of the Trojan tradition. 3 6 7 10 12 13 What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. They are but trifles, to be sure; but, scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable. The 1979 football season opened up with a feeling of optimism. After all, this was the last season for the Foothills Conference, of which JHS was an unsuccessful member. Coach Sladki predicted that the Trojans would improve their record, and no one would argue. The Trojans switched to a Wing-T offense in order to com- pliment their speed. But for reasons of great variety they managed but one win. The underly- ing theme of the Football season was mud (right) with the weekly monsoon striking every Friday; it was blood and mud football. The Trojan offense managed only 32 points this season. Left: Coach John Sladki looks on as Herman Cunby (Above) makes yardage against Latrobe. seMi-TouQb Above: Someone changed the channel. They also managed to place 3rd in District 6 competion, sending 8 people to States. Their best perfor- mance was probably at Altoona. We won by 20 points, making Boys' track the only J.H.S. sport to beat Altoona this year. Outstanding athletes of the team were Ralph Dravis, Harry Shaffer, Mark McCann, and Jeff Dick, who were members of the State quali- fying 3200 m. relay; Havert King, who qualified in the 100 m., long and triple jumps; Ed Dena, who went in the 300 m. int. hurdles; and Rick Kanuch, who won the District's pole vault. Dick also qualified for the 400 m. dash. Shaffer, Dravis, Dick, Dena, and King also scored over 100 points each in the reg- ular season. One school record was broken this year; by Kanuch in the pole vault. Coach Wilson named Jeff Dick as outstanding runner, Kanuch as out- standing field man and King as out- standing track and field man. It is hoped that this season's success will be repeated over and over again in the future. Bottom: Look out world, Here I cornel Below Left: Throwing the discus. The team was hurt by an injury to Mike Stumpo, third baseman. Howev- er, Don Zolnosky did an excellent job in replac- ing him. Outstanding players for this year were seniors Richie Price and Jerry Stofko. Richie led the team with hits and RBI's, as well as accumu- lating the highest batting average. Jerry led in doubles and runs, and also had the most stolen bases. Freshman Brian Fern did surprisingly well for his first year, leading the team in home runs. Mark Fern was credited with the most pitching victories. Other starters included Eric Schneider, Mike Filia, Jim Weir, and Dick Love, who did an excellent job at centerfield. It is also noted that Mike Filia was the leading contributor in giving Mr. Slobozien ulcers. All in all the team did well. uo Above Left: Alright you guys, which one of you has the ball? They practiced all sum- mer, getting ready for the football season and the cheerleading contest at the War Memorial, which was held in November. They did their cheer to the theme of Pinball Wizard. This Year's advisors were Mr. and Mrs. W. Glynn Edwards; gymnastics was taught by Mr. Richard Rigby. Following the football season the girls prepared for the basketball season. The cheer- leaders are also considered pom-pon girls, which is demonstrated when they march in pa- rades. Some of the girls were on the drill team which competed in Wildwood, New Jersey, dur- ing the band trip. As usual this year's squad began their prac- tices when everyone else was starting their sum- mer vacations. Except for two weeks they prac- ticed every day. Learning the football show and working on contest material left no time for idleness. The football season began in a rush; between games, field practices, field competi- tions, and the beginning of contest practice. The girls really made it all pay off when they won first place at the Annual Jaffa Mosque Ma- jorette Spectacular, held in Altoona. This con- test is one of the hardest competitions, if not the hardest, in Western Pennsylvania. This year's advisors are Mr. and Mrs. W. Glyn Edwards and Miss Tammy Taylor. Their routine was done to Doc Sevrenson's Brass Roots. 147 TO G3W D E! There's more to the J.H.S. Color Guard than meets the eye. Besides marching with the Tro- jan Band at parades and football games, the 27 members are busy all through the year practic- ing for their own competition season. The Guard is a member of the West Penn Color Guard Circuit. They competed from Janu- ary through April all over Western Pennsylvania and Maryland. In addition to practicing an average of 7 hours a week, the girls were busy with fund-raising activities, including a 72 hour Spin-a-thon at the Richland Mall and four car washes. As a result of their fund-raiser, the Guard donned new uni- forms for their second season of competition. Above: Gina Lengyel twirls her gun. So it was therefore fitting that the last of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical collabo- rations be done the last year a musical was pre- sented at the Greater Johnstown High School Building. The Sound of Music was based on a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The story is laid in Austria, directly preceding the German annexation of that country. Lead roles were played by Marcia Sandak, Bernie Oravec, Mark Scholtz, Joan Karmanocky, Lee Ann Keiper, Tim Evans and Heidi Nasser. The musical director was Carl Miller; the pro- duction director was Ernie Vickroy. Mike Klesch was assistant musical director as well as rehearsal pianist. Brenda George served as stage manager, and Don Cunningham was technical advisor. Joan Karmonocky was in charge of choreogra- phy. Below: The nuns' chorus. Above: The nuns speak in the Abbey.
