ii s nara to nna a neru in me last of the 70’s. Most of the fig- ures who used to serve in that capacity have fallen into disre- pute. We have discovered that too many of our athletes owe their loyalties to the mighty dol- lar rather than their teams; too many of our politicians have shelved their integrity to line their pockets; and too many of our parents, we suddenly learn, are mere humans like ourselves, prone to the same mistakes. However, and fortunately, to add a sense of direction to our forma- tive years, we still can look to figures of inspiration. These might include our parents, honored members of the clergy, world leaders, or Dr. Donato Zucco, Superintendent of Schools in the Greater Johnstown School Dis- trict. Dr. Zucco can be an in- spiration because he proves the American Work Ethic. He got where he is not because he was Turiunait; Biiuuyn iu ub uui i i iiiiu a situation which guaranteed the opportunity for success, but be- cause of a dream . . . and hard work . . . and determination. Dr. Zucco graduated from Johnstown High School in the late 1950’s without an academic degree. He worked for a time as a truck driver for $65 a week, but realized he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life per- forming menial tasks. So Dr. Zucco did something with his life that many people only TALK about. HE CHANGED IT! He came back to JHS and got his high school academic diploma. He went to Pitt and got a college degree. He taught math at Gar- field and later became principal II ICI tJ. DUl L-M . i-UUUU O Uicam had not yet been fulfilled. He returned to the University of Pittsburgh and earned his Doc- torate. Since becoming Superinten- dent of the Greater Johnstown School District in 1974, Dr. Zucco has become one of the area's most respected educational and community leaders. He is positive proof that you CAN set your sights high and reach a seemingly impossible goal, no matter what that goal might be. You CAN change your life, no matter where it might be at this moment. And if you have doubts, you can talk to Dr. Zucco. He remembers who he is, what he’s worked hard to accomplish, and how much influence he can have on others. He truly cares. And when he gives advice, take heed. It may be the soundest you’ll ever re- ceive.
