Most of the fig- ures who used to serve in that capacity have fallen into disre- pute. We have discovered that too many of our athletes owe their loyalties to the mighty dol- lar rather than their teams; too many of our politicians have shelved their integrity to line their pockets; and too many of our parents, we suddenly learn, are mere humans like ourselves, prone to the same mistakes. However, and fortunately, to add a sense of direction to our forma- tive years, we still can look to figures of inspiration. These might include our parents, honored members of the clergy, world leaders, or Dr. Donato Zucco, Superintendent of Schools in the Greater Johnstown School Dis- trict. Dr. Zucco can be an in- spiration because he proves the American Work Ethic. He got where he is not because he was Turiunait; Biiuuyn iu ub uui i i iiiiu a situation which guaranteed the opportunity for success, but be- cause of a dream . . . and hard work . . . and determination. Dr. Zucco graduated from Johnstown High School in the late 1950’s without an academic degree. He worked for a time as a truck driver for $65 a week, but realized he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life per- forming menial tasks. So Dr. Zucco did something with his life that many people only TALK about. HE CHANGED IT! He came back to JHS and got his high school academic diploma. He went to Pitt and got a college degree. He taught math at Gar- field and later became principal II ICI tJ. DUl L-M . i-UUUU O Uicam had not yet been fulfilled. He returned to the University of Pittsburgh and earned his Doc- torate. Since becoming Superinten- dent of the Greater Johnstown School District in 1974, Dr. Zucco has become one of the area's most respected educational and community leaders. He is positive proof that you CAN set your sights high and reach a seemingly impossible goal, no matter what that goal might be. You CAN change your life, no matter where it might be at this moment. And if you have doubts, you can talk to Dr. Zucco. He remembers who he is, what he’s worked hard to accomplish, and how much influence he can have on others. He truly cares. And when he gives advice, take heed. It may be the soundest you’ll ever re- ceive. And now hznz it, my izcnzt, a vzny simple. i zcnzt; It U only with thz hzant that one can izz nightly; What U zA zntlal 16 invisible to thz zyz. 6 7 9 10 A j hJLund l a peA on ivith whom I may be iinc tvi. PRINCIPAL Above Right: Principal William Grove returned to the reins of running Johnstown High after a year long sabbatical in order to obtain a doctorate. Mr. Grove feels there are three reasons why J.H.S. is “second to none;” the faculty, the students and the program. The atmosphere which the students of J.H.S. provide makes Mr. Grove look forward to his future years as principal. Below Left: Athletic Director John Liska has the responsibility of organizing an athletic program that encourages the opportunity for participation by all the students. Mr Liska also is the coach of the boys' and girls' cross country teams. This year we are proud to recognize runner Karen Horoho and baseball star Thad Henry. Karen Horoho has earned letters in Cross Country two years and in Track four years. She started out the year going undefeated in Cross Country regular season and won the Central Western All-Conference Championship, setting a new course record. She also broke records at the Conemaugh Township and Bishop Carroll courses. She placed 11th at the State College Invitational and 6th at the District VI Meet. For the second year in a row she qualified for States, where she finished 46th. Karen competed during Track in the 880, two-mile relay, and went undefeated during the regular season running the mile and two-mile. She finished 3rd in the two-mile at the State College Invitational and won the mile and two-mile at the Westmont Invitational. In the District VI meet, Karen placed 2nd in the two-mile, earning her a trip to the PIAA State Finals, where she finished 11th. Even though Thad Henry had the highest batting average on the baseball team, hitting over .330, he is best known for his ability in pitching. He was 4-0 in completed games. In his four wins he allowed a total of only 9 hits. Thad had about 60 strikeouts for the season. In the game against Westmont. Thad pitched a no-hitter. At the close of the season, his ERA stood below 1.0. In the summer of 1978 Thad played for Wheeler Cadillac-Pontiac. He was named the Johnstown Junior League “Player-of-the-Year.” In the same league, he held the third highest batting average at .390. He also headed the league with 49 hits, 13 doubles, and 5 triples. In the summer of’78Thad had the lowest ERA in the Junior League at 1.40. This award is presented each year in memory of John Kamnikar, who was to have been the starting quarterback on the 1960-61 football squad. During the summer of 1960, John and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident. The John Kamnikar Award was originated in 1961 by the school’s coaching staff and is presented to the athlete that typifies the Kamnikar excellence. The 1979 John Kamnikar Award was presented to Kathleen Gelles for her athletic achievements on the tennis courts and her scholastic achievements in the classroom. Kathleen was a two-year letterman and graduated fifth in her class. 93 First Row: Kevin Voeghtly, Herman Gumby. Members of this year's coaching staff were Ed Stetz, Dick Mock, head coach John Sladki, Galen Bloom, and Chuck Kist. There are many excuses that can be used to answer the questions about this year’s record. The Trojans went to camp at St. Francis College with fifty players, but when the season ended there were only thirty-seven, including just nine seniors. However, there were good memories that came out of this season. Most of these memories are from the final game of the year. Everything from the clowning around in the restaurant to the feeling of dominating Valley during the entire game. The joyful emotions of the final game victory helped ease the pain of the games before. Although the team faced much adversity, the gridders kept hangin’ in there dur- ing this rough chapter in Trojan football history. Above: Vic Balko boots an extra point. The Boys’ Cross Country team was coached by Mr. John Liska. During the season they com- piled a respectable record of 5 wins and 5 losses. The team has bright prospects for the future be- cause eight of the ten members were underclass- men. The two seniors were Mike Coby and Dave Gray. This year’s top runners were Harry Shaffer, a junior, who finished 6th at the Central Western All-Conference Meet held at UPJ, and Ralph Dravis, a sophomore, who finished 2nd in the Dis- trict-6 Junior Varsity race at State College. They participated in every meet, even if the op- position did not have a girls’ team. The leading runner this year was Karen Horoho, a senior who went undefeated in the regular season and won the Central Western All-Conference champion- ship, setting a new course record. She also broke records at the Conemaugh Township and Bishop Carroll courses. She placed 11th at the State College Invitational and 6th at the District VI Meet, which qualified her to participate in the State finals, where she placed 46th. Although this year’s record may not show it, the team played very good basketball. The Tro- jan hoopers lost five games by a total of twelve points. The team also had tough breaks in losing to some of the breathers on the schedule. The most memorable game would have to be the two- point loss to powerful Altoona at the War Mem- orial. The high point of the season was the trip to Canada to play in the Silver Fox Tournament in Hamilton. The Trojans captured third place, but more important are the memories off the court with new Canadian friends. This year’s season saw many underclassmen in the starting line-up, indicating that the future should be very promising for Coach Litwalk. 107 Rich Kris, John Wiedwald, Bill Hicks, Stacy Hall, Nick Molchan, Dave Calhoun. The Trojan grappling team suffered what might have been its final fall during the 1978-79 season. After three matches, the decision was made to cancel the program. The main reason for this was the lack of interest. There were approximately thirty people on the team at the beginning of the season, but after the third match about twenty members quit. This stunning development not only shocked the coaching staff and what was left of the team, but also the whole school. John Liska, the Athletic Director, after a few days delibera- tion, finally said he couldn’t justify the expense of the program for only thirteen people. A telephone vote was made by the School Board and the pro- gram was cancelled. We can only hope that the situation next year will be such that Johnstown Wrestling will come back into its own. m 3 r 3 Above: It's a bird, it’s a plane ... no, it’s Super Rog! At this time, Pam Steinbring will be the only Trojan to continue her volleyball career. Pam will play for the Fighting Scots of Edin- borough. Joanna Massey The boys’ track team continued their winning character this year by compiling a record of 12 wins and 3 losses. Despite the early loss of Havert King, the team proved it had depth and ended its season with a very respectable record. Havert came off the injured list to spark the team to a second place finish in Districts before going on to states. Havert won the 100-and 200-yard dashes and was second in the long jump and 440. Others who placed in Districts and earned berths in the State meet were Vince Szczur, who placed first in the shot put and second in the discus and javelin, Rick Kanuch and John Petrosky, who finished one and two in the pole vault, and Darryl Gibson, who won the 330 intermediate hurdles and placed third in the high hurdles. They not only support the football, basket- ball, and wrestling teams, but also perform in- structed dance routines with the band. Due to the unsafe floor conditions at the annual War Memorial Cheerleading Contest, the girls were judged on only the viewing of one round. The cheerleaders came through with a 3rd place trophy. The girls perform their graceful moves. Karen Kadas shows her spirit and enthusiasm. 146 The cheerleaders always encouraged their team onto victory through both good and bad times. Members of the J.V. Squad are Patty Madden, Jenni- fer Skelton, Teresa Ukmar, Patty Calik, Patty Adams, Nancy Calik, Chris Gartland, Anna Germana. The squad enjoys cheering at every game. Contests were held at Norwin, Greens- burg, Turtle Creek and a few in Maryland and Ohio. Practices were held every Tuesday and Thursday night and Saturday mornings. Also they competed in Denver during the annual band trip. This November they held a spin-a-thon at the Richland Mall. Each girl twirled four hours, com- prising forty-eight hours. They raised $2,000.00 to help pay for equipment and the band trip. They also stuffed newspapers at the Tribune - Democrat. Band mem- bers awaiting sunny days were greeted by a falling snow, which soon cleared up. The victori- ous Trojan band, under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Glyn Edwards, received 1st places in marching band, majorette, color guard, and drill team competitions. This was an astounding feat since they competed against much larger bands from all over the Midwest. Among other honors, May 8 was proclaimed Johnstown Band Day by Mayor Tomljanovic. In December, besides the annual Christmas as- sembly and concert, the chorus performed at the Rehabilitation Center and at various churches in the area. In April they visited Nashville, Tennessee, where they captured a bronze medal at the “Sounds of America” Music Festival. While in Nashville the group spent a day in Opryland, U.S.A. and toured a recording studio. The annual Spring Concert was held on May 16. The chorus also performed at Baccalaureate and graduation. The Music and Drama Departments presented Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein ll’s Show Boat for their annual musical this year. Show Boat was based on a novel of the same name by Edna Ferber. It was first performed at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York on December 27, 1927. The presentation drew large crowds all three nights, March 22 through 24. Lead roles were played by David Molchany, Marcia Sandak, Mark Sholtz, Patty Kartes, Bev Woznick, Gary Gates, Mindy Santa, Kelly Johnson, and George Carter. The music dir- ector was Carl Miller and the production dir- ector was Michael Andolina. Joellen Guidry served as student director and Robert Reiking was the stage manager. The technical director was Beth Howard and the technical advisor was Don Cunningham. Show Boat will be remembered as another in a fine line of musicals presented by students of Johnstown High School. Public Utilities Corporation (G.P.U.) held its annual stockholders meeting in Johnstown on May 9, 1979. Their meeting at the Cambria County War Memorial followed by just over a month America’s most serious power plant incident, which had occurred at Three Mile island Nuclear Power Plant near Harrisburg. Since G.P.U. was the primary owner of T.M.I., it was feared that large numbers of anti-nuclear demonstrators would flood Johnstown. However, the few anti-nuclear demonstrators that did show up were overshadowed by several dozen em- ployees of the energy community, more con- cerned with their jobs than the possible negative aspects of nuclear power generation. 165 CAFETERIA WORKERS Right: Teresa Arena waits to serve another hungry student.
