DEDICATION The 1974 Spectator staff takes great pride in dedicating this year’s Edition to Mr. Ralph E. Weigle, Physics and Aeronautics instructor at Greater Johnstown High School There aren’t too many “living legends” around today. But what else would you call a man who has given fond memories to students for thirty- five years? How else could you describe that certain quality of personality that will always bring a smile to the lips as you reminisce? Room 429—recollections of experimental apparatus, “rubber thumbs”, “slouches”, lab problems, “computers”, and the very special moments each class remembers. The noble science of Physics—explained through the gentle humor of an instructor who used a variation of the “King’s English” that belonged to him alone. We can speak of only one man —Mr. Weigle—as much a part of JHS as its very foundation. We have been fortunate ... as have many other classes at JHS ... as have our parents ... to have had Mr. Ralph E. Weigle touch our lives in his very own, unique way. [1] SPECTATOR... . . Johnstown High is the clicking of CTialk on blackboards, the blurred faces of chanting crowds in a stadium, the warmth of a smile .in a jostling clutter of students, the furrow of brows in pondering. And with each of its lasting impressions JHS issues a challenge. Every locker door clanging shut, every dull thud agaiilst hard- wood, every bead of sweat, every new discovery in the lab, every slow an|l stately step in the processional speaks'of the essence of school, the spirit of education. 21 ' a J These are the things we remember as out footsteps echo in empty hallways. Miss Kunkle was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She was a teacher for 42V2 years, 16 of those years spent at JHS. Words. Cold, factual words. Words cannot express emotion, the sorrow felt as we acknowledge the death of one of the finest teachers at JHS. The class of 1974, the faculty and administration, and alumni of JHS echo that sorrow. Helen Gagan Eileen Mikula Bettie Yuhas Nancy Baumgardener Jeanne Delich Diane Ramirez THE SECRETARIES AT JHS Margaret Stull LEARNING “HOW TO SUCCEED The fundamentals of record keeping are taught to bookkeeping students. Shorthand is a quick, accurate method of taking notes. Students at JHS interested in a business career are carefully trained in the JHS Business Depart- ment, headed by Miss Kathryn Long. Commercial students are introduced to various phases of business which include such skills as typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and clerical training. Shorthand is a phase of the secretarial course. Shorthand enables students to write as fast as people speak by using a system of symbols. Bookkeeping students are taught the basics of record keeping that are applied in a double entry bookkeeping system. The clerical students are trained to file and to use office machines, while typing students strive to obtain greater speed and accuracy in their typing. Exceptional business students are given the opportunity to participate in a work program sponsored by the school in conjunction with local businesses. The qualifying students attend school for half a day and during the remaining half they hold part-time business jobs in the community. Students on the work program are usually guaranteed a permanent position with that company upon graduation from high school. roo1 Typing is a basic secretarial skill. I—I WOOD SHOP In the wood shop at JHS, our students learn more than just a trade; they learn a useful art which will make their future much more successful. One skill which they learn is cabinet-making. The furniture which they build is used by many area schools. Their projects include, bulletin boards, tables, chairs, and book cases. The products are turned out under the guidance of Mr. Robert Anderson. [24] Mr. Reighard instructing his students. When a student enters the Machine Shop at JHS, he knows little about machinery. When he graduates, however, he will have gained a wealth of technical knowledge that will enable him to find employment in the industrial city of Johnstown. The Machine Shop is taught by Mr. Walter Reighard. MACHINE SHOP Working at the lathe [25] PHYSICS AND AERONAUTICS Physics is a science class enjoyed by many Seniors. It involves a quick mind and a steady hand for the problems and labs. There are lecture periods and stu- dents teach the class, so the students have fun while they learn. Aeronautics at JHS is taught by Mr. Ralph Weigle. This course is designed to teach the students to understand and solve the complicated problems of flying. A successful flight means considering weather, navigation and wind direction. Someday many of Mr. Weigle’s students will be challenging the “wild blue yonder”. Mr. Weigle also teaches Physics. [26] SCIENCE Our Science department, headed by Miss Mary Solarczyk, offers a wide field of study for those interested in medicine, technology and science. JHS has many laboratory facilities, experiments and demonstrations for the curious mind. The top picture is the Advanced Chemistry class, working on a lab experiment. The lower picture is a Biology class using the Biology Laboratory. [27] FITNESS IS FUN Physical fitness plays a vital role in our educational system. A healthy body is the basic requirement for developing an alert mind. Gym class not only fulfills the necessary state exercise requirements, but also proves that “Fitness Is Fun”. Touch football was a favorite activity in Mrs. Huchel’s and Mrs. Davis’ gym classes. After completing the unit on football, the girls began to develop the skills of ping-pong, badminton, bowling, and gymnastics. The boys, under the supervision of Mr. Popp and Mr. Garbinski, often en- joyed a strenuous bout of basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics. What is this film rated, Mr. Popp? HEALTH Mrs. Minium meets with her health classes three times a week. The health program is a required course for all Senior students. Mrs. Huchel, Mrs. Minium, Mr. Popp, and Mr. Garbinski meet with their classes three times a week. Current health problems such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and venereal diseases are frequently discussed during the classes. Films concerned with childbirth, family planning, abortion, and cancer are also the basis for many discussions. The health program gives one who is interested in maintaining a healthy body a good opportunity to learn how his body functions. These long hours of health instruction benefit only those who abide by what they learn. [29] SEWING Fashion-minded girls are likely to be found situated be- hind a sewing machine in the JHS sewing department. By assembling their own outfits, they have learned to econo- mize and to keep in step with today’s fashions. Mrs. Jane Manners and Mrs. Gloria Fenik are the sewing in- structors. They teach the girls the basics of sewing, how to select and care for materials, and that each stitch taken with effort and care will prove to be a type of reward when the girls finally model their outfits in public. Left to right: Mary Ann Kohan, Karen Smith, Patty Kovac. HOME ECONOMICS The Home Economics Department gives many fine young ladies the opportunity to practice running a home before they really have to. Courses in Foods and Nutrition, Theraputic Nutrition, Smart Spend- ing, Child Development, Family Relations, and Interior Decorating are offered. It is now pos- sible for the academic student to participate in the Home Economics Course also. Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Steele feel that by offering a semester course, many girls who are college bound will be able to participate in the various courses offered. [30] Baffer Up! (Left-Right) Mrs. Steele, Tony Kemet, Dan Ballow, Jim Lavis. Bachelor Pad, a relatively new course offered at Johnstown High, deals with the aspects (and rewarding experiences) of homemaking for boys. The knowledge which the boys gain from Bachelor Pad is supposed to enable them to do a better job of roughing it on their own. The material covered in this course includes sewing, nutrition, cooking, and basic skills of homemaking. Some of the more rewarding experiences which occured are as follows: Bill Simmons, “Eating the food you cooked. Mike Grandinetti, “Leaning on a hot waffle iron.” Dan Vilkofsky, “The day the garbage disposal choked on our food.” (Left-Right) Gary Weakland, Stan Richardson, Mike Adams, Mike Moore. (Left-Right) Dan Vilkofsky, Bill Simmons, John Dietz, Walter Wozniak, John Kopler. [31] From the economics class at JHS may come the people who will solve this country’s economic problems. The students learn much about buying life insurance, budgeting, and investing in the stock market. The class is taught by Mr. Andrew Hanak. ECONOMICS AND DRAFTING Drafting is a course open to anyone. It is designed to give a good background for professional drafting. A good draftsman is necessary in many lines of work, including engineering and architecture. In addition to teaching the art of drafting, Mr. Weaver, the instructor, teaches his students a good deal of useful math which they will need in professional drafting. Although it is primarily a vocational course, drafting is for anyone who has an interest in drawing. [32] MATH The Math Department at JHS is an excellent one, offering a wide variety of courses. The many courses include General Math, Nurses' Math, Geometry, Algebra I and II, and Trigonometry- Math Analysis. There are also two accelerated courses for Seniors. They are Math-Analysis II. which includes some computer programming, and Calculus. The Math Department, under the supervision of Mrs. Jean Napolitan, hopes that the courses offered will provide an excellent background for whatever field the student enters. [33] The History department, under Mr. Chromy, contributes a very valuable part of the school curriculum. Here at JHS, Sopho- mores study World Cultures, while Juniors take American history and Seniors study Problems of Democracy. Current Events is offered to Juniors and Seniors. It is designed to make students more aware of the pressing problems of today. [34] English is perhaps the most im- portant subject in our school curriculum. For this reason, every student is required to take an English course. Sophomores read A Tale of Two Cities, while Juniors read Julius Caesar and House of the Seven Gables. Seniors read Macbeth and work on term papers. All students read many varieties of literature and make speeches for practice in public speaking. Our English department is headed by Mr. McCloud. THE LIBRARY IS . . . The library is a world of facts, dreams, hopes, mystery, and challenge. Every new endeavor is bound within the cover of a book. Its pages contain the many hopes and dreams of people, young and old. The mysteries of life unfold upon the pages of an open book. In any book, you become the main character in a fantasy world or the hero in a drama. You climb mountains, break the sound barrier, or slay a dragon. You solve crimes, board a space ship, or become an intellectual chemist. If you are unfamiliar with this world hidden behind the door labeled Library”, its tour guides, Miss Wassum and Mrs. Shirk (better known as librarians), will roll out a special welcome mat” for you. Come in and get lost in the world of books. Miss Wassum and Mrs. Shirk are the school librarians. . . . OUT OF THIS WORLD! Guten Tag von Herr Cooper und Klasse. Bonjour de Mademoiselle Calderwood et la classe. The foreign language department at JHS is an excellent one which offers courses in four different languages: Spanish, French, Ger- man, and Latin. Not only do the students learn to speak the language, but they also learn about the cultures and people of different nations. In addition to the regular classroom scene, the students are given the opportunity to use the language lab. There they see slides and films, listen to records and tapes, and hope that they will further their understanding of the language and its people. FOREIGN LANGUAGES AT JHS iHola! de Senora Huber y clase. Heus e Mrs. Grady et classis. [37] PRINT SHOP Randy Teeter at work using one of the printing presses that are available in the Print Shop. Students hard at work printing material for use The printing and publishing industry is big business in the world today, and it offers many career opportunities for those with the required skills. To fill this need for skilled labor in this field the Print Shop at JHS is training young men for future jobs in the printing industry. The JHS Print Shop uses some of the most modern methods available for student instruction. The student who enrolls in this course for the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades is enabling himself to gain three years of working knowledge in some of the printing processes. The student learns to develop his skills under the careful direction of his instructor, Mr. Ken Artice. The Print Shop at JHS is responsible for furnishing some of the printed materials for the Greater Johnstown School Dis- trict including such things as the school paper and printed material for commencement. Students preparing material for use in the Print Shop. [38] ARTS CRAFTS Mr. Varmecky showing his students the way it should be done. Art—That’s where it's at. The purpose of an Arts and Crafts course is to help a student develop creativity and imagination to the best of his or her ability. Students of both the Art and Craft classes develop an appreciation of both handmade and machine-made articles. Under the careful guidance of Mrs. Georgia Meirs and Mr. John Varmecky, the students learn to use their hands and heads to create their own masterpieces. The students are recognized for their talent by receiving numerous awards for entries in poster contests and compet- ition. Some of the students’ handiwork is also put on display in the showcases on the 2nd and 4th floors. Some people think of Art as a craft and Craft as an art, but whatever they are, they are appreciated by the students at JHS. Craft students hard at work doing their thing. [39] THE FINE ARTS There are a variety of courses in Dramatics at JHS. One course available to all students is Drama I, which gives a thorough background on the history of the Theatre. Stagecraft prepares students for work on the make-up, scenery, costume and props committees for the class musical and play. They also receive a mini-course in acting. The Drama III class is comprised of only Juniors and Seniors who have an adequate background in stagecraft. This year the class presented a short Christmas play, Why the Chimes Rang”. They built the entire set and did all their own make-up. Mr. Wilson, the head of the Dramatics department, supervises his Stagecraft and Drama III clases in the construction of the class play and musical sets. Mr. Wilson also teaches Oral Interpretation. The class participates in speeches and tells children’s stories. They interpret poems and prose and study phonetics as well as semantics. They also learn to use television and advertising works and actually conduct an advertising campaign. [41] SHEET METAL SHOP Students practicing welding. Students enrolled in the Sheet Metal course learn everything that is necessary to work with sheetmetal. Under the watchful eye of their instructor, Mr. George Rischer, the students learn to work with the different tools and procedures needed to make a finished product out of sheetmetal. Although some visual aids are used in teaching the students, most learning is done by doing. The course is mainly concerned with the different techniques of welding and the different welding positions. The students also learn to solder and desolder. Near the end of the school year the students put their newly acquired skill to work by making such items as dust pans and buckets. ELECTRIC SHOP Students who enroll in the Electric Shop course are taught everything there is to know about electrical fixtures. The use of visual aids makes the students’ learning about the operation of electrical appliances and wiring much easier. Most of their learning though is done by doing. Their instructor, Mr. George Mandichak, shows them how to do the wiring and then the students practice on their own. Before the end of the school year, the students are fixing appliances and practicing wiring a house. John Rameriz busy at work. Should I or shouldn’t I? AUTO MECHANICS The automobile in this day and age is a major part of the American way of life. The boys in the Auto Mechanics course learn to keep these wheels of America turning. Under the guidance of their instructor, Mr. Robert Rhodes, the boys learn about the different car systems and how to take care of these systems. They learn everything from reboring an engine to changing a tire. To aid them in their learning, Audio-visual aids, demonstrations and illustrations are used. AUTO BODY How would you like to work with beautiful bodies five days a week without it going to your head? The boys in Auto Body get their chance every school week. Under the careful instruction of Mr. Frank Krai I, the boys can turn an ugly looking heap into a beautiful set of wheels. To accomplish this, the boys learn everything from welding to painting. They learn with the help of visual aids and demonstrations. The students do 90% of all the work done on cars on their own. Front, left to right: Al Sanford, Richard Ellis, Mark Harris. Back, left to right: Tom Hersch, Ted Passeau, Dave George. [43] Drivers Education, supervised by Mr. David Lichliter, is a two-part course, available for all students at JHS. The first part is classroom instruction one period a week during the Sophomore year. Students learn defensive driving and are prepared for both the oral section of their driver’s test and the actual driving part. They study Pennsylvania driving laws from the Drivers Manual with many audio-visual aids included. The second section of Drivers Education is practical application of what the student has learned in theory. When the student has obtained his learner’s permit he receives at least six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. When both parts of the course have been completed, the student receives a grade and is prepared to drive defensively. Physiology is a half-year course offered at JHS that deals with the functions and vital processes of the body. The class is involved in many lively discussions and frequent trips to the lab. Mr. Rawlins, the instructor of the course, is interesting and gives his students a good understanding of all parts of the body. When we went to camp we took 87 boys. When we returned we had 57 MEN. The men that played for the Trojans were not big, but they proved by their winning spirit that winning does not necessarily go to bigger foes. The Trojans proved that it’s not the size of the man in the fight but the size of the fight in the man that counts. I hope they enjoyed being a part of the team as much as I enjoyed having them on the team.” What can you say about a super player like Pat Cummings? His record tells his basketball story, but says little about the person who made it happen. Everyone who knows this “mustachioed mickey-fickey” likes and respects him. What can we say to you Pat, but “thanks.” And from this star himself: “I was proud to play for JHS. The winning season was a team effort and everyone played a part, including the fans. OUR GIRLS ARE GREAT On Friday, November 16, the War Memorial was packed with hundreds of screaming, yelling guys and girls. Adrenalin was flowing and the excitement was high pitched. The scene was set for the 30th Annual Cheerleading Contest. Lisa Helsel, Mindy Pisarczyk, Chrissy Clark, Patti Rievel, Julie Burgo, Suzy Smedo, Jeanne Durcho, Jan Crouse, Karen Muenzer, Bambi Brallier, and Debby Dubnansky ran onto the floor and tried their best. They cheered up a “storm” and in every sense defied defeat”. The long hours of practice, the sore muscles, and strained throats, were well worth it when the “Trojan Tempest” was presented with the 3rd place trophy. NUMBER ONE! This year marked the 11th annual Majorette Contest. It was held at the Cambria County War Memorial on Friday, March 29. Thirteen squads from the surrounding area participated diligently with hopes of capturing the title. The JHS Trojanettes, Cindy Wiedwald, Ellen Suchman, Linda Swanger, Sue Felix, Sally Maley, Cheryle Shearman, Jolene Miklos, Sue Majcher, and Rita Bombatch, marched out onto the floor and performed their drill to perfection. It took months of preparation for the contest, but it was worth it when the Trojanettes were presented with the first place trophy. CUMMINGS MAKES HIS MOVE pwn ilBiriH Johnstown Coach Paul Litwalk, Pat Cummings, and Coach Gale Catlett of Cincinnati after Cummings signed to play for the Bearcats. Pat Cummings plays basketball. But he doesn’t play basketball like any ordinary person, as is evident by the number of scholarship offers he received from major colleges and universities throughout the United States. Cummings’ immense talent also led to his being selected for the first team on the All-Pennsylvania and District-6 All-Star teams and enabled him to play in the Dapper Dan Roundball Classic in Pittsburgh. He is only the second Johnstown player ever to be selected All-State. Pat’s high calibre play in high school will have to be repeated at Cincinnati, a first-rate basketball school that plays a tough schedule. Coach Catlett is very pleased to have Cummings on his squad and we’re sure that Pat Cummings will be to Cincinnati fans just what he was to Johnstown fans—fantastic! JOHN KAMNIKAR AWARD Jim Grasso, the 1974 John Kamnikar Award Recipient, receives his trophy from former football coach “Blackie Mihalic. The John Kamnikar Award was originated in 1961. It is awarded to a senior with outstanding scholastic achievement. John Kamnikar, in whose memory the award is presented, was to have been the starting quarterback on the 1960-1961 football squad. During the summer of 1960, John’s hopes for an outstanding athletic and scholastic senior year were shattered. John and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident while traveling along old Route 219. The JHS coaching staff and administration of the 1960-1961 school year decided, because of John’s dedication and leadership in athletics and his outstanding scholastic achievement, to annually honor a senior athlete to keep John’s memory alive. James Grasso was the winner of the 1973-1974 John Kamnikar award. He received this award on the basis of his scholastic achievement and accomplishments in the sport of golf at Johnstown High School. Jim was a member of the Trojan’s golf team. He was a three-year letterman in that sport. Jim is the first golfer to receive the John Kamnikar Award. He was awarded the Sunnehanna Country Club Caddy Scholarship, and has decided to attend Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. Congratulations and Good Luck, Jim. [177] •M - . . .
