Because the Maker of all good things has never made a mistake, we of true faith know that Jim has joined the great majority, and that there is no need to fear. He will be immortal, because the personality of this sensitive and well-liked boy will live in the hearts of his friends forever. He took the signal for retreat with humility; this, too, was typical of Jim, our beloved classmate. TABLE OF CONTENTS Special Features THE GREATER JOHNSTOWN SCHOOL BOARD 4-5 DR. M. Included in the study of English are panel discussions, book reports, oral reports, public speaking, grammar, and the study of American and English literature. Through the year, one may read plays, novels, poetry or essays. Movies, slides, overhead projectors, records, and many other visual aids bring the instruction to life. Students also study the development of our language dating from the Anglo-Saxon period to modern English. Composition is stressed and pupils are encouraged to write essays. Most seniors are required to write a research paper in order to prepare them- selves for more advanced writing. Miss Olive Katter is Chairman of the English Department. I 25 ] Studying th fiend fast a (BsdJtsUi JuJtuM For the J.H.S. student who has a keen interest in the study of the past, along with current events, our History Department offers several fine courses. The student has an ex- cellent opportunity to study in such classes as problems of democracy, American history, ancient history, English history, and economics. Each history class is its own storehouse of knowledge. Entering an American history class, one learns of the great heritage of our country. If a student wishes to focus his atten- tion on such things as prehistoric man, the pyramids, or Greek democracy, he will find himself in an ancient history class. Economics and problems of democracy can really hold one's attention with expert instruction. English history, available the second semester, is an elected course which many find rewarding. Many of our students graduate with a greater understanding of the world around them, thanks to the efforts of our History Department. Mrs. Margaret Bowes is chairman. Bookkeeping Class (2 Sihonq JoundcdLon (0J1 thsi JutuM Every year JHS turns out a group of well-trained students eagerly awaiting a career in the world of business. This year has been, of course, no exception. Commercial students have been introduced to various phases of business which include such skills as typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, selling, clerical training, the operation of business machines, and the interpretation of business law. Capable students were also given an opportunity for further training by working at a part-time job. This gave numerous students a taste of what the working world is really like. It also provided valuable experience which will help them to secure a permanent position in later life. Outstanding commercial students receive due honor in the annual awards assembly, given at the completion of the school year. This is particularly true of those who have ex- celled in typing or shorthand. Yes, a world of information in this library. Cl (jJohld J'juII oft 9M$oAmaiwn Walk into the I.H.S. library and the world unfolds before your eyes. Books in every size, color and subject you could imagine line the walls. Current issues of all the popular magazines are neatly arranged on magazine racks towards the back of the library. A five-year supply of magazines is kept on file for any reference work the student may have concerning magazines. A special section of reference books located behind the main desk highlights one of the big changes in the library this year. In this way the librarians and their assistants are able to keep better track of reference books and the students find they are now much easier to locate. Another change is the special section kept on Pennsylvania books which are kept on the left hand shelves below the windows. Our librarians Miss Twila Wassum and Mrs. Helen Shirk are always standing by ready with a smile and a helping hand. A world full of information, that's the J.H.S. library, 1969. [ 30 ] Jim CbdA Beautify Stiwol Out, out damn spot ,—might be a familiar expression to many directors. But the common expression one can hear from Mr. Michael Davis, teacher of drama, is a low, Okay, performers, are we ready?! Enjoyment was brought to all as drama students entertained themselves and their audiences by numerous read- ings and plays. Of course, all this was through determination and hard work. Mrs. Josephine Quigley regulated the distribution of needles and pins to ink and paper for the many artistic developments her classes created throughout the year. Young artists displayed their talent in the classwork and in various artistic contests. Outstanding work of the stu- dents brought appreciation of art to many people of all ages. The sounds of music came in magnificent splendor as the band, or- chestra, and chorus presented spec- tacular programs throughout the year. From football games to school assem- blies, the Music Department provided entertaining and memorable programs. Mr. W. Glyn Edwards and Mr. Carl Miller served as advisers and directors of the department. Music Class c tajunchinq a JutuM in (fahonavdkA The sky is the limit in the aeronautics classes at JHS. Under the direction of Mr. Fred Darr, who flies himself, the boys received experienced instruction in the finer points of aviation. Students learned how to take off, plot a course, measure wind deflections, and land the plane. They also learned the fundamentals of meteorology as applied to flying. As a result of this instruction, the boys are given a wide choice of fields to enter after graduation. They may become navigators, airplane designers, flight de- signers, flight engineers, control-tower operators, and of course, pilots. Aviation is one of the most important fields in our modern world, and the aeronautics students at JHS will help to make it even more important. Charting the course Aeronautics Class [ 32 ] VfljcriJvLmat i AMntial Mathematics is used, in some form or other, in everyday life all over the world. Regardless of the field one may enter, mathematics is essential, whether one is a statistician, an accountant, one tabulating costs, or simply a house- wife planning the family budget. All must agree that a strong background of mathematics is a necessity. Every student at Johnstown High School graduates with knowledge of this subject, for there are many competent instructors in the Mathematics Department. Among the courses offered in math at JHS are trigonometry, algebra, geometry, general math, nurses math, math analysis, and business mathe- matics. Miss Florence Warfel is chairman of the Mathematics Department. [ 33 1 Foods Class dtomsimakQAA ofl th JuiuM Follow your nose to the appetiz- ing scent and it will lead you to the Home Economics Department. The Home Economics Department is the center of food preparation and in- struction as well as the place where one may learn the laws of nutrition. Serving good food Mrs. lane Manners, the instructor, assists the future homemakers in doing their daily tasks and gives many helpful ideas. Included in the program are lessons of child care, proper nutrition, food preservation, and family living. Classes offered to girls are Home- making I or II and Nurses Home- making. Two or five-day courses are offered. A Nurses' Homemaking class was also offered for those interested in a nursing career. In this class impor- tant data, the correct diets, and care- ful menu preparations are offered. Bulletin boards add interest. (2 Siiich JowcUud the JutuAe Marking, cutting out, pinning, and hemming—these essentials of sewing are learned in the clothing classes. Mrs. Gloria Fenik, the instructor, also taught girls about the care and operation of the sewing machine. Hints on the selection and care of materials proved invaluable information for the girls. One project is required each grading period, and throughout the year a large selection of dresses, suits, jumpers, and skirts are completed by the girls. It is always a glorious Easter when students wear their own ensembles in the Easter parade. The Clothing Department also took part in the Science Fair this year. Sewing projects of the girls were exhibited in displays. The Fair was interesting and inform- ative to the public who had an opportunity of viewing classroom results. [ 35 1 “(Bonjou i, ma ctaAAc! “fiiwwA dioA, date!” 71166 was lan9ua9e 6V6rywhere ,or 6V6ryon6 iaq, jcIoaac!” Those were probably the first words one heard when he entered French, Spanish, or German class for the very first time. 'T don't understand a word of this, one probably whispered to his neighbor. “I just know I'll flunk this course. But in most cases, one found it wasn't as difficult as he had thought. In fact, at times, it was a lot of fun. There were weekly visits to the language lab, and several magazines, library books and dictionaries, pertaining to the various languages were pro- vided by Miss Lelia Calderwood. There were also the French and Spanish Clubs, and the Language Banquet, enjoyed by all who attended. With splendid teaching facilities, plus the excellent instruction of Senor Jose Gon- zalez del Valle, Senorita Regina Hodos, Frau Ingeborg Calderwood, and Mademoiselle Lelia Calderwood, one could hardly leave their classes without a greater knowledge of the language, people, and culture of the countries of today's world. Science ... Jhe Jhinq of the Jutuhe Today, 1969, everything is science. The future will belong to those who excel in this particular field. A knowledge of science is a must for those anticipating entering the fields of space travel and medicine. Science will become increasingly important in the years to come. At JHS the Science Department is really in . The four fields of study available to students are chemistry, physics, physiology and biology. Johnstown High students are fortunate in having the oppor- tunity to receive this instruction, through laboratories, experiments, and highly qualified teachers. Each year the Science Department, headed by Mr. William Farren, enters the Science Fair. It is held each year in February at the Cambria County War Memorial, where prizes are awarded to the best exhibiters. JHS has always come home with their share of prizes. Science is the “thing of the future. Being a part of this new world will insure success for those interested. Science for everyone! Mr. Kaufmann shows students the know-how ' Driver-education Class learns the fundamental facts. Mr. Dan Plummer and his happy class. Safa (bhivQJiA fa A th J'juhUiA When one learns to drive a car, it is important that he learns to drive it the right way. Any student who chooses Driver-Education as an elective does just that. An automobile, used without appropriate knowledge, can cause a disastrous loss of life and waste of material. This is one of the reasons we have Driver-Education at JHS. The students are instructed by Mr. George Kaufmann and Mr. Daniel Plummer. After informative sessions in the classroom learning safety rules, watching movies, and learning the general fundamentals of driving, students take to the wheel and try to apply what they have been taught. They are provided with three cars in which to learn, and the experience they gain will help them to become the safe drivers of the future. Girls really swing in gym class. IjviIa’ QIoaa This year's girls' gym classes got off to a slaw- start, due to the unfinished gym floor. Once classes were finally under way, however, the two gym teachers, Mrs. Mary Minium and Miss Lois Miller, seemed determined to make up for the lost time. The girls had a stimulating workout to look forward to twice every week. From exercising to volleyball and square dancing to tumbling, the girls participated in a wide variety of physi- cal activities. These activities provided not only the needed exercise but also the added thrill of competition and team work. Shuttle along Boys limber up “Shapsi lAp oh Ship Out” The Boys' Gym Class added a lot of variety to the school day while developing top-shape muscles to go along with our tip-top shape minds. This year's instructors were Michael Stehnach, Dave Roman, and Michael Garbinski. The curriculum was varied from calisthenics to crab basketball. The year got off to a late start due to the installation of the badly needed new floor. While waiting, we all sat anxiously hoping for comple- tion so we could begin the program of tuning up our bodies. We all have fond memories of stunts accomplished in Gym that we never could have done in any other class. ( 41 1 I O. Jhada floA ike JutuM The Johnstown High School Vocational Department has various courses set up to prepare technically-minded students. Ranging from sheet metal to drafting, these courses are good prepatory classes for a brighter future. These boys work hard to secure for themselves a good job in years to come. They toil endlessly at their chosen professions, for these boys will make the decisions of tomorrow. At Cochran Junior High School, there are four shops. They are: auto body, electric, auto mechanics, and sheet metal. The boys are transported to and from Cochran by school-provided buses. A hard and efficient worker can count on a reward at the end of his study. Industry wants skilled technicians. [ 44 ] Qm siaawsi (phinioAA oft $ HS Without the Print Shop there would be no posters, no programs, no tickets, and no Centralizer, because the JHS Print Shop handles all of the printing in the building. They cooperate with all who ask their help. It is plain to see that they are busy every hour of the day. These students are among the most industrious in the school. And they have to work hard to satisfy their instructor, Mr. Ken Artice. Students roll off six issues of the Centralizer during the school year and every- one will agree they do a fine job of it. What they learn in the course of the year will be helpful to them in their future vocation. The Print Shop deserves a great deal of credit for the services it renders continuously throughout the school year to meet the needs of all offices. The boys you see on this page printed your Centralizer plus innumerable other materials. Wood Shop students produced beautiful pieces of furniture as well as artistic wall plaques. UJood Shop: fcxpohi nai JoMDhhDW A {jJoodwohk AA This shop is filled with the noise of industrious woodworking as the local contingent of the future carpenters of America pursue their chosen crafts. The chips fly, under the able direction of Mr. Robert Anderson, who through passing his knowledge and experience on to his students has helped to create many a fine woodworker. From the shop have come many quality items, such as decorated hardwood cabinets and unique wall plaques, gently rounded into the shapes of smiling cats or flying ducks, which can be seen gracing the living rooms of many area homes. Boys from Wood Shop have gone on to become talented employees of both local and out-of-town cabinet shops, construction companies, and other associated firms, successfully taking their places in modern industry. (Practice IfYlakoA (p ifiud Practice is one thing the boys in Auto Mechanics can't seem to get enough of. If the students aren't working on their own cars or mockups with all types of me- chanical problems, they're work- ing on the autos of the personnel of the school district. The boys do all types of work from motor tune-ups to wheel balancing. Under the direction of Messrs. Paul Oleksa and Robert Rhodes the young mechanics learn, through training, the proper ways to correct difficulties within the various mechanical parts of the car. The need for qualified me- chanics is greater today than it ever was before, because with the constantly increasing number of automobiles on the highways, these cars need to be in top-run- ning condition. Skilled mechanics are always in demand for a well- tuned car helps in highway safety. Trouble with your car?? Just call one of these boys. Jhssj uj 9i on th £im ai QMS Quick on the draw are those enrolled in the industrial arts courses at JHS. Students must have a sound knowledge of geometry, algebra, and trigonometry in order to participate in these classes. Under the direction of Mr. Ross Weaver and Mr. Lanny Dixon, students cover such divisions of drafting as lettering, shape description, sketching, and size description. The course also presents advanced problems, including isometric drawing, geometric constructions, and architectural drawing. After completion of the industrial arts course, the accomplished drafts- man is well-prepared to enter such fields as engineering, architecture, and cartography—promising futures for promising JHS students. Here are the boys who must be alert because perfection is their goal. [ 48 1 Our electrifying electricians play a major role in the field of education. fcbudhifyinq fclsidtkkianA Electricity plays a more important part in our lives today than any other source of energy. Therefore, we must have competent people trained to work in this field. Our Electric Shop aims to prepare boys for the future. As in every facet of learning, the student must have a foundation on which to base further learning. Mr. George Mandichak gives them this foundation and leads them through the year, teaching the students how to use electrical machinery and how to repair the many different electrical mechanisms. After high school, these students are qualified to enter any one of the various fields of electricity. Some go on to further schooling. But whatever path the Electric Shop stu- dent chooses, he now has the foundation without which he could not go on. f 49 ] On Oqa £oa Ttlcuchini iA Under the supervision of Mr. Walter Reighard, the boys of Machine Shop learn to operate and skillfully use many different machines. Also they are taught the use of tools and various instruments, such as calipers and micrometers. A good student with a sufficient amount of mechanical ability and above-average in mathematics would have no trouble in finding a job in the future. By studying and being attentive in class, they develop skill and technique. As in any shop, they work hard to achieve high standards. The machinists make the shop an interesting place to work or visit. After his study in Machine Shop, a student would be equal to an apprentice in any first-class Machine Shop outside of Johnstown High School. The buzz of the various took meant the Machine Shop boys were on the move. [ 50 ] Original ideas were expressed in the various articles produced. (paid of 9nduAjtAi}A JuiuM The Sheet Metal Shop, under the direction ol Mr. George Risher, prepares the student to work with various metals. In this case, one learns the proper use ol the different tools and machines plus the fundamentals of shearing, grinding, soldering, riviting, welding and finishing the work. The shop also instructs the student in a knowledge of terms and how the students can express their own original ideas. Upon completing the course, each student will have both the knowledge and the skill needed for the trade, for various technical schools and the world of industry are always on the look-out for industrious workers. Sheet Metal Shop touches us more in our everyday life than one may think. Look around the home or school and one will find countless numbers of articles that are most essential. And while the number of items increases, so will our need for the boys in Sheet Metal Shop. [ 51 1 (bhafitinq, th lAnivsihAal Jjcmqimqsi Our purpose is to prepare, through a sys- tematic course of study, a student acceptable to a fast-changing industrial market. To develop talents in the field of engineering drafting and initiate a sense of enthusiasm for the trade that will propel the student into a lifetime occupation of drafting and its related fields. If you wont your car to look like new here are the boys to see. (Body. BuildsikA - (Bid Tint Jhsdn Own Gym is not the only class in which one builds and betters bodies. The JHS Auto Body Shop, located at Cochran Junior High School, under the watchful eyes of their coach , Mr. Frank Krall, enables the students to revive tired, worn-out bodies—auto bodies. Here these boys leam the basics of restoring out-of-shape cars to their original, or maybe even a better, condition. Several operations taught to the students are, how to weld, paint, and repair autos in various other ways. To make the course even more interesting, Mr. Krall shows demonstrations, performs experiments, and makes use of Audio-Visual Aids. They really put a car through its paces , but the end result, _a beautiful body , seems to these boys well worth their efforts. ABELE, J. ADAMS, A. ADAMS JR., H. ADAMS. W. AKERS, G. Tj ALBERTER, D. Robert Smolnik JJutih (LbAiAianai UJoAih VYhmi} UJohdA The Visual Aids Department this term helped to fortify daily lectures and lessons. Sometimes taken too much for granted, this department deserves more recognition. Mr. Dave Roman directed the program within the JHS building, and Mr. Walter Orlidge supervised the entire department within the city school system. Catering to both the audio and visual needs of the student, these aids made it possible to see one's text come alive, adding deeper meaning to the printed word Equipment such as tape recorders, opaque and movie projectors, as well as record players and television sets to cover special broadcasts was circulated from room to room. The members of this group caught these same machines on their return trip, and all equipment was re-checked in room 122. This essential department proved to all that their pictures were worth 1000 words — ask any teacher or student. JomjdMww’a fauAncdi JtA To the average student, fourth period was just another class. But for those who met in 113, it was the busiest time of the day. The group of students who gathered there made up the staff of the Centralizer , the newspaper of JHS, and the Spectator , the yearbook. They were always searching for news and being nosy was a must! Pens and typewriters were constantly moving in order to meet a deadline. Putting out six issues of the paper and producing this fine yearbook took much time, thought, and energy. This group of kids worked hard and diligently to produce this book, a treasure to every senior. [ 99 1 Here are the boys and girls who illustrated our yearbook. Cbd Stag Is it a proud person who belongs to the Art Staff? You bet! In order to qualify, one must have artistic ability, a vivid imagination, and determination. This group of guys and dolls are really with it as far as art goes. A number of them plan to make art their career. Talented students are responsible for the art work in The Centralizer and The Spectator . Their cartoons and sketches reflect their talent. It is with their efforts that “The Spectator becomes a colorful book of memories. Under the supervision of Mrs. Josephine Quigley, the adviser for all art work, these students complete their work in A-l style. A fine example was during Hallo- ween when they took 1st place in the Glosser Bros, window - painting contest. This could be a burden to a less-talented group of artists, but for ours here at J.H.S., alot of the work is pure fun and accomplishment. [ 100 1 Jhc filiquui Jhai (ftidiA The Photography Staif of Johnstown High was diligently at work for the year of '69. The members were busy roaming the halls and clicking cameras at unsuspecting students, then organizing them for the enjoyment of others. The staff, under the direction of Mrs. Maryann Minihan, adviser, consisted of four boys and five girls. These students were recommended and selected by the teachers. To be qualified, one had to be reliable, dependable, and willing to work. The boys' work was to aid John Hesselbein, our professional photographer, in arrang- ing the schedule for taking pictures of the school clubs. Organizing the photographs for the Spectator was the job for the girls. Without our photography, a dull book it might be! Behold the photographers who made our Spectator more colorful. Annually, the club plans various activities such as a trip to Pittsburgh to see the Allied Artists Fall Show, and a tour of the Art Institute. Both proved to be highly profitable. This club also performs a community service. As a Christmas project, the artists provide tray favors for two-hundred Forgotten Men at Torrance . These are all handmade and designed by JHS students. With these activities scheduled under the excellent supervision of Mrs. Josephine Quigley, art adviser; Debbie Polca, president; Mark Kazar, vice-president; Cheryl Irwin, secre- Art Club officers tary; anc Sherry Kuntz, treasurer; this year's Art Club should be a big success! An A or B+ average must be achieved. The students were inducted into membership at a special assembly held before the student body. Officers of the society explained the aims of our chapter. Un- der the guidance of Mr. John Slovikovski, each member functioned as part of an entire unit — the backbone of the school. Each home room elected one representative and one alternate at the beginning of the new term. To belong, a student must have had at least an average of C grades, and typify a good citizen of the community. These representatives were responsible for attending any Student Council meetings called by the president. They reported back to their respective homerooms and kept all well-informed of any impending activities. In a democratic system, they were the decision makers who were an asset to teachers and students alike. In addition, they also sponsored many worthwhile projects and gained respect for Johnstown High School. Student Council officers db-ori mir ' Self-government meant better citizenship. DD - Our educators of tomorrow JuJtuM J ach AA On Jh Wlovsi F.T.A. officers The Future Teachers of America is certainly one of the most important and significant organizations in Johnstown High School because it is possible that many, if not all of the members, will be the educators of to- morrow. This year the Future Teachers of America was represented by 105 energetic and intelligent young men and women. Mrs. Elaine Trexel, the club's sponsor, worked right along with the four officers, Linda Tinkle, president; Kathy Rawski, vice-president; Debbie Polca, secretary; and Kathy Hall, treasurer. The many activities held by the F.T.A. during the year included a submarine sandwich sale, bake sales, fudge sales, and several bus trips to surrounding colleges and universities for the purpose of becoming acquainted with the various campuses. JHS Future Teachers are on the move. Proudly they will carry with them the spirit that is necessary for those who know they will lead the young in tomorrow's world. One of the newer clubs on the scene this year at J.H.S. is the Spanish Club. This club gives Spanish students a chance to participate in activities pertaining to the customs of the countries whose language they are studying. The Club's biggest activity this year was the Language Banquet. The students were dressed in the native costume of the matador and the Spanish senorita. Many wore sombreros and panchos, and were laden with bongos, maracas, and tambourines. Their show consisted of Spanish songs and the Mexican hat dance. Other activities were singing at Saint Anthony's Church at a mass on the Feast of Guada- lupe on December 12th and Christmas caroling in the downtown area. The club is open to anyone interested in participating, providing they are Spanish students. The advisers are Senorita Hodos and Senor lose Gonzalez del Valle. These feminine voices were under the direction of Mr. Carl Miller. Beautiful sounds were heard through-out the halls of JHS as the girls sang in harmony, melody, and rhythm. Any girl was eligi- ble to join if she liked to sing. Their aim was to receive enjoyment from singing. Twice a week these girls met with a desire for a deeper understanding of music. One performance never to be forgotten by the girls was performing at baccalaureate services. Having fun while working, the girls can hold their own anywhere. The experience of singing in the Girls' Chorus ended the year with a keener appreciation of music. [ 108 ] “fama $inq OJiih 2l Our Mixed Chorus this year was one not to be surpassed. Under the direction of Mr. Carl Miller, many well-executed performances were presented. This year the chorus had 130 voices, from which 35 were selected for a separate ensemble group. Officers selected for this year were John Martin, president; Bob Havers, vice- president; Maxine Crawley, secretary-treasurer. Librarians were Jeanne Hanzel and Judy Opacic. The highlight of the 68-69 term was to perform at the PSEA convention in Harris- burg. Also on the agenda was their own musical production. Then, too, there were performances at numerous school assemblies during Christmas, Easter, and Commence- ment. A special privilege granted to our chorus was to sing with the Johnstown Sym- phony Orchestra and their choraleers. Few groups have had this experience. The last event was to perform during Commencement exercises at the War Memorial. It was all hard work but there was also much fun and delight at chorus re- hearsals. This year will not be forgotten by those musically inclined and those they entertained so beautifully. It was an honor to belong to this chorus. A credit to any school would be our marching Trojans. VlflwichsihA on Jth THjovq Ready, two, three, up! When one hears this phrase he immediately knows our JHS Trojan Marching Band is on the move. No Trojan football game would be complete without the intri- cate perfected drills of our great band. This year, the half-time performances ranged from the Gay Ninety's to many recent rock tunes. Under the expert direction of Mr. W. Glyn Edwards and Mr. Carl B. Miller, the band has the reputation for being one of the best in the state. Many long hours of practice after school and on Saturday mornings were contributed by band members. Our drum major, Gary Bushko, took charge of every performance and was ably assisted by the assistant drum major, Ron Schmiermund. Our Trojanettes performed excellent twirling and marching routines at each half-time show. They also headed the band in each parade. This organization had the honor of attending the Indiana University of Pennsylvania's homecoming where they marched in a six-mile long parade. The officers of the band were: Robert Oyler, president; Jeff Saly, vice-president; Cyndy Gilbert, secretary-treasurer; Chris Rhoades, executive secretary; Sue Walter and Bruce Altemus, historians. That was the swingin' sound of the stage band! Under the direction of student teachers, all of whom were from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the supervision of Mr. Carl Miller, this group produced a sound with a quality hard to match. This year the band was made up of five saxes, five trumpets, three trombones, a bass trombone, drums, a guitar, and a piano player. Sue Love, soloist for the group, added a final touch to make this year's stage band the greatest yet. These musicians sacrifice a great deal of time and effort. They were dedicated to the art of music as well as to the sound of soul. The stage band performed at school activities, assemblies, and many other functions that brought delight to all who heard them perform. West Mifflin North and Penn Hills are the two black marks on Johnstown's season. The big Al- toona game ended in a deadlock so we all will be looking forward to next year's clash with the Lions. For the Men of Troy the 69'' season was excellent, and we are proud. t 133 1 ERIE BOWS TO JHS The Trojans outscored a tough Erie Prep team 34-26 for its first win of the season. There was no scoring until the second quarter, when Schneider ran 18 yards for a touchdown. Erie came back to tie the score at 6-6, but with 33 seconds left in the half, Gary Hrivnak took a Schneider pass into the endzone for a Trojan score. Seman's kick was good, making the halftime score 13-6. Erie scored two fast touch- downs in the third quarter, but Johnstown came back when Andrews scored from the 2- yard line. Erie scored once again in the third quarter, making the score 26-20. The Men of Troy scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, as Schneider wiggled over from the one and later as Tony Veney scrambled over from the five, making the final score 34-26 Johnstown. TROJANS TROUNCE SOUTH HILLS The score was 7-0 before Johnstown got rolling but once they got started they never stopped as they went on to victory 21-13 over South Hills. Early in the second quarter Allen Andrews scored and Ed Seman kicked the extra point to make the score 7-7. A fine punt return by Bill Baumgardner set up the go-ahead touchdown by Tony Veney. Quarterback Carl Schneider threw to Seman late in the second quarter to set the score at 21-7 at half time. Johnstown sat on its lead and were almost up ended when a rush by South Hills was thrashed late in the fourth quarter. The final score was 27-13. 3 IN A ROW FOR JHS One of the most exciting games of the season was played September 20 when Johns- town nosed out Valley 27-20. The Trojans led off the game with two touchdowns. The first was a 7-yard plunge by Andrews and the second a plunge by fullback, Ed Rosko. Valley then scored three straight touchdowns making the score 20-13 Valley. Schneider sneaked over from the one to tie the game in the fourth quarter. After a punt was fumbled and John Stasko recovered, the Trojans scored the win- ning touchdown as Andrews went over from the three. It was Johnstown's first game in the WPIAL Class AA race. TROJANS ROLL TO NO. 4 The Trojans put five touchdowns, two safe- ties, and a field goal together in a one-sided game to make it four in a row 41-13 over Carlisle. With fourth and long yardage Carlisle was kicking when Barry Rutz was tackled in the end zone to make it 2-0. One play after the free kick, JHS led 8-0 with Allen Andrews leading the way. An interception by Joe Loboi set up Ed Seman's first goal of the season to make the score 11-0. Five plays into the second quarter Barry Miller went from 6 yards out. Seman made it 25-0 at the half. Tony Veney made two excellent blocks to spring Andrews to the 3 yard line. Ed Rosko plunged in on the next play. Seman made it 32-0. JHS again tackled Rutz in the end zone to make it 34-7. Four plays after the free kick Mike Kamin- kar tossed to John Martin for the touchdown. Seman made it 41-7. The final score was 41-13. TROJANS SHUTOUT 21-0 Johnstown was handed its first loss of the season at the hands of West Mifflin North on October 5. A 41-yard punt return opened the scoring for Mifflin. They scored in the second half when the ball was knocked loose from Allen Andrews and run 99 yards for the T.D. The third quarter was scoreless, but a 3-yard plunge in the fourth quarter ended the scoring with the final tally 21-0. [ 134 1 CUI ths. way with [ 135 ] JHS WINS A CLOSE ONE 10-7 For people who get overly nervous, the Point Stadium was not the place to be when the McKeesport football team invaded the home of the Men of Troy. The game kept every fan on the edge of his seat until the final gun sounded and JHS walked off with a 10-7 victory. The game was a very rough defensive battle with each team making several fine stands. Ed Seman’s field goal accounted for the difference in the final score. The game left everyone waiting for next year's battle. JHS UPSET BY PENN HILLS 20-14 After a scoreless first half, Penn Hills once again put the jinx on Johnstown by upsetting them 20-14 in Penn Hills on October 20. A 1- yard plunge and a 66-yard run put Penn Hills in the lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. A screen pass from Schneider to An- drews turned into a touchdown as Pancho raced 64-yards into the end zone. A 3-yard quarterback sneak by Schneider gave the Tro- jans their short lived lead 14-13. With 1:52 remaining Skip Gibbon, the Penn Hills quarter- back, tromped 8-yards for the winning touch- down making it 20-14 Penn Hills. JHS 21 ALTOONA 21 The Altoona high school stadium was a bed of mud when the Trojan men of Johnstown came to town on October 25, 1968 for their annual battle with the Mountain Lions. The game was played through a constant drizzle that at times erupted into a major cloud burst. The final score did nothing for anybodys spirit. The two teams battled to a 21-21 tie. The game was a see-saw battle that kept everyone guessing until the very end. Johns- town played its usual game of mixing ground plays with passes. Stand outs in this game were as usual Allen Andrews, Tony Veney, Bronko Keser, and Bill Baumgardner. Altoona used a play that anyone who saw it will remember for a long time. The play started just like all other running plays but changed when the halfback lateraled the ball back to the quarterback who threw to an end far down the field for the touchdown. The game was a classic battle as always occurs when these two teams meet. TROJANS COME FROM BEHIND Quarterback Carl Schneider guided the Johnstown Trojans to a 16-13 come-from-behind win with a well-balanced passing and running game. An 18-yard pass from Schneider to Veney started the scoring for the Trojans in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter Highlands had tied the score. With 2 minutes left in the first half Seman kicked a 23-yard field goal which put Johnstown into the lead until Highlands scored with a minute left in the half. The extra point failed. The second half was deadlocked until Schneider with 3:00 left in the game, ran 17-yards for the winning T.D. The final score was Johnstown-16, High- lands-13. JHS SINKS WINDBER 40-6 In their first home afternoon football game the mighty Men of Troy completely over- whelmed the Ramblers from Windber in what might have been the final meeting of these two arch rivals. The final score was JHS 40 Windber 6. Johnstown completely dominated the first quarter and in the second quarter started sending in the reserves who did a fine job of containing the Windber attack and added several points to the score themselves. Windber could not contain the fine running of the Johnstown backfield led by Ed Rosko, Allen Andrews, and Tony Veney. The Trojan defensive unit held the Windber team to a very small total of yards gained. This game made a fine ending for a very successful year for the Men of Troy. Tuned-In Jh Jumd - Out Siudsmt THE TUNED-OUT STUDENT OF '69 Patty Schuster '69 Slowly slithering down the main hall— Making sure to be seen and appreciated by all. Homework's a bore—just can't spare the time— Is the philosophy of a tuned-out student, Class of '69. Mini's and midi's is his great delight, He takes over teachers and shows his might. Why not? They don't seem to know one thing About the ways of a hippie and the joys it can bring. Poor tuned-out student just doesn't know, THAT THE ROAD HE IS TAKING HAS NO WHERE TO GO! Tuned Out [ 150 1 Cl fkalhj Junsud - 9n Shidmt THREE POEMS by Dave Lopaze I 'j— M DAVE LOPAZE Santa Claus won't come, At least not for a year. I think he's been arrested; At least that's what I hear. You know that pipe he has? The one he smokes a lot, He doesn't smoke tobacco. Lately he's been smoking pot. Ill See the little kiddy, There on Santa's lap. He tells him what he wants, Then tugs on Santa's cap. Santa tells him, Stop! Dumb kid, I think you're weird! This didn't stop the boy, though. He just pulled Santa's beard, And hit him in the stomach, A pillow though it was, St. Nick became upset so much, He finally called the fuzz! A TRILOGY by Dave Lopaze '69 There once was a girl who got married, And her husband she constantly harried. He shot her today, And they took her away. In a pine box away she was carried. A pigeon will speak with a coo. An owl will speak with a who. They don't make any sense. Because they're so dense. If you read this poem, so are you! There once was a student whose head. Was declared by a Doc to be dead, He got out of his seat, And talked with his feet. Now guess where my brains are, he said. It wasn't quite so long ago when father's arms were strong, When he could lift me up so high and hold me there so long. No, it wasn't very long ago, but just look at Daddy now, His hair is getting grayer and I really don't know how. He doesn't seem to have the pep that he once had, And all those very little things seem to make him mad. His checkups are more often than they ever used to be, And now Dad must wear glasses for without them he can't see. These signs all tell me Father is growing old, It saddens me to think youth is something one can't hold. Linda Falvo MINIS OR MIDIS? Cyndy Gilbert Minis or midis? That is the question. Can't one of you boys please make a suggestion? We poor girls; what are we to do? Skirts are either short or down to our shoe! The fashions are changeable, just like the weather; One day we wear tweed, the next day leather. Where the fashions will go, heaven only knows. Soon there'll be NO skirt, or it will cover our toes! Cyndy Gilbert ODE TO A BUTTERFLY by Bonnie Scileny You're a lucky little creature With no earthly cares at all; You kiss each pretty flower On someone's garden wall. With no strings and no connections. You change your home each day; You have no rent or taxes, Not a single debt to pay. But are you lucky after all, When the summertime is through. You poor little flying creature What then becomes of you? Bonnie Scileny CENTRAL PARK Allan Gates by Allan Gates Everyday I walk through the park; Everyday the benches are filled With old, old men. Sitting, laughing, and talking. Some look poor, Some look not so poor. Some look as though they have lived a full life. Today it is raining. The park is bare; No one is sitting on the benches. There are only puddles of rain; I wonder what the old men with splotched, wrinkled skin are doing today. 1 wonder what they can do. Gloria Obarsky FALL Gloria Obarsky '69 Fall has shown her familiar face. This we cannot deny, There is but little of Spring to trace, That meets the naked eye. Jack Frost no longer sleeps in bed. His magic tells us so, But paints the leaves a flaming red, And in the night they glow. The animals, too, are quite aware. Of Fall's bewitching charm. The squirrel, the bee, the bird, and bear. Can see no reason for alarm. Dicme Cunningham MAN by Diane Cunningham Look deep into the heart of man, What do you usually find? Happiness, fear, joy and hate, Emotions of every kind. Man is a mixture of many things. All rolled together as one. Like the make-believe Gingerbread Man, Out and bound to have fun! But sometimes fear captures the heart, And man becomes as a toy. Afraid of the world in which he lives, The man becomes a boy. Yet man is a wonderful creature in that, Down he doesn't stay long, But up to face the world again, Determined to right the wrong. frmaajf jvfrjf jjrjf itr M snrsff) (bocf vnoh vpnffj frjjvy) zkfQ v tnfrj bimpaif awfC ipqrzf fiw wtnfj ur pr£ m-°iA a VCfJUOQ) Window painting contest brought first prize to Johnstown High School. Only desolation meets its gaze in the barren land, The sun looks down pityingly on the lone flower. Knowing that it too must die. In the choking radioactive air, the flower looks toward the sun, Pleading for mercy but receiving only harsh sweltering heat. It wearily droops its petals and withers to the ground. Life is gone from the earth. Donald M. Strayer FRIENDLESS He sits alone at his desk. Coming in early in the morning, Pretending to do his homework. He is busy with dreams of friendship. A pretty girl comes in, And sits in the seat beside him; He gives a shy glance in her direction, But seeing it returned. Looks back to his algebra book. She leaves in a few minutes So he can relax. His only friend is absent today. So he can't talk about the baseball scores; He'll have to eat alone. Today will be worse than usual. Don Hoover TO A GRANDFATHER I NEVER KNEW I never knew my grandfather when he was alive. I never knew what it was to sit on his lap And listen to stories only grandfathers can tell. He was the dark horse of the family. So he stayed away. Maybe it was our fault. For not inviting him. Donald Hoover THE SEA The sea that comes to touch my hand Is rolling on a foreign land. And people in this faraway place. Are looking out to see my face. by Beth Larimer '69 Donald Strayer I 174 I Cathie Ickes Lynne Havener THE BLIND by Cathie Ickes 69 We say that we are lucky. For we have eyes to see; But for the blind we nod our heads. And mutter in sympathy. We see the brightly-colored flowers, And vaguely turn away; But the blind enjoy the lovely scent. And remember it all day. We see the child amidst his toys. Then turn to watch T.V.; The blind would smile and thank the Lord That he had eyes to see. We pity those who cannot see, And to them we are so kind; But they are truly the lucky ones. And we the ones who are blind. OH, HAPPY DAY by Lynne Havener The lovely girl walks down the aisle. All dressed in purest white. From the radiant smile upon her face, She's waited for this night. Her husband-to-be is standing there, Waiting for his wife, He chose this very special girl To be with the rest of his life. They both are very nervous, And I know I would be, too. But finally one hears the words, I love you and “I do . [ 176 ] Sardinar Morris THE PHONE CALL by Lynne Havener The telephone is ringing, I jump up from my seat. Is it John or is it Dave Or is it Bill or Pete? Quickly I dash over. And softly say, Hello , But much to my dismay, It's only Betty-Jo. Now the night is over, And into bed I go, I'll wait again tomorrow night But not for Betty-Jo! LIFE'S END by Sardinar Morris I've climbed the rugged path, Tho' obstacles blocked my way, I've skipped through joy. But fell from wrath.
