Stud nJtA Jodouj— S c udaJuAA JoMDhhDW— The Commercial Department of Johnstown High School trains many students for future occupations. Among the subjects taught are typing, shorthand, clerical training, bookkeep- ing, business math, business English, and business law. Special awards are given each year in typing and shorthand. Miss Kathryn Long, chairman of the department, is in charge of the presentation of the awards. A standard goal is set for all students and those who reach this goal are eligible for an award. These awards have proven helpful for students seeking employment after graduation. In clerical training students learn how to operate the dictaphone, ten key adding machines, the calculator, the mimeograph, and the comptometer. Each year in January, business men in town come to Miss Long. They are seeking girls for employment in the various offices. Not many are chosen, but the ones who are get the jobs. Lucky is the student who goes to school half a day and earns money and experience the other half. [ 27 ]
