The department not only teaches the fundamentals of English but broadens the students' knowl- edge of literature, public speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. The department also emphasizes the importance of effective reading and writing. As a most progressive group, English teachers keep in step with the new approaches to the teaching of grammar and writing. Because English is a living language the neces- sity to keep up-to-date is a must. The newest books can be found in every English room. The latest aids may be had in the way of film strips, motion pictures, and records. The English Department also gives the student an op- portunity to enter various writing contests as well as to be- come a member of the Debating Club. VYWuwh jof ihs. (padl Included in the History Department of IHS are Ancient, English, American, and World his- tories, Problems of Democracy and Economics. Aided by audio-visual aids, the history teacher of IHS makes the past come alive. Each course within this department offers specific information for each student. The way of living of the cave man to the fall of the Roman Empire is taught in the Ancient history classes. The American history course covers every event from the Revolutionary War to the challenge of the present cold wars which endanger our liberty. Important world events are taught in World history, from ancient times to modem times. Problems of Democracy is learning and discussing the struc- ture of our government and laws. Economics is the study of how man earns and spends his money. It is said that history repeats itself; therefore, planning a better future depends on learning the events of the past. Stud nJtA Jodouj— S c udaJuAA JoMDhhDW— The Commercial Department of Johnstown High School trains many students for future occupations. Among the subjects taught are typing, shorthand, clerical training, bookkeep- ing, business math, business English, and business law. Special awards are given each year in typing and shorthand. Miss Kathryn Long, chairman of the department, is in charge of the presentation of the awards. A standard goal is set for all students and those who reach this goal are eligible for an award. These awards have proven helpful for students seeking employment after graduation. In clerical training students learn how to operate the dictaphone, ten key adding machines, the calculator, the mimeograph, and the comptometer. Each year in January, business men in town come to Miss Long. They are seeking girls for employment in the various offices. Not many are chosen, but the ones who are get the jobs. Lucky is the student who goes to school half a day and earns money and experience the other half. [ 27 ] Mrs. Rachael Georg and Mrs. Carmela Falvo. Books, books, and more books! No wonder the library provides a key to adventure—adventure in science, literature, history, current events, and a variety of other topics. A busy place is the library with Mrs. Rachel Georg, the librarian, and Miss Pat Guzzi, the library clerk, ready to give help whenever needed. The JHS library contains 9000 books and subscribes to 78 magazines and three daily news- papers. There is a bulging file dating back five years for each magazine. With all the references available, the students of Johnstown High School are able to find material on topics ranging from prehistoric times to the space age. [ 28 ] Wlu k, maks-Vp, and (paint! Costumes, paint brushes, and song sheets are common tools used by the Fine Arts Department. Hard work goes into this department. The Dramatics Department, under the direction of Miss Joan Puhala, furnishes JHS with the class play, the Thanksgiving program and other assemblies during the year. In this department full emphasis is placed on the use of props and make-up. Mr. Carl Miller and Mr. William Tepper head the Music Department. Good voices are welcomed by the Mixed Chorus, the Girls' Chorus, the Boys' Quartet and the Girls' Quartet. Pleasant tones can be heard coming from the JHS band, the music ensemble and the orchestra. Water color, oil painting, pastel, and crayon are mediums used in the art classes. Exhibits from the Art Department have taken honors at the Scholastic Art Contests in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Josephine Quigley is the instructor in this department. [ 29 ] rrr $o SkijwcOud, 'tyoiing VYlan . . . In a large inconspicuous room on the first floor of our Alma Mater, big plans are discussed. Room 113 is the location of the aeronautics classes. Forrest Allison and Jack Slabe demonstrate the slide rule. Mr. Frank Weaver, who leads these discussions, is a licensed commercial pilot. The first semester of his aeronautics course is devoted to the study of meteorology, aerodynamics, and the recognition of aircraft. The second semester includes plotting courses, map reading, and radio navigation. By the use of visual aids, an excellent textbook, and his own extensive knowl- edge of aeronautics, Mr. Weaver can teach his boys the fun- damentals of flight. Since the techniques of aeronautics will someday have to be modified for aerospace travel, our Alma Mater, through the aeronautics classes, presents its contribution to the space age. [ 30 ] Junior Mathematics class working with identities. JAc Qhalbiwjsi jo WidhsimaiL Will future mathematicians be prepared to meet the challenge of future mathematics? One group which is working to make that answer a resounding, Yes, is the JHS Mathematics Department. For students seeking a basic background in the science, the department teaches general math, plane geometry, and algebra. Students who wish to make science or mathematics a career will find solid geometry and trigonometry necessary. It may sometimes seem foolish for liberal arts and commercial students to take courses in math- ematics. But the members of our Math Department realize the faultiness of that way of thinking. In the future we shall need doctors, lawyers, writers, and businessmen, as well as mathematicians and scientists, who understand this exact science. Wherever our graduates go, they will represent our Alma Mater well, thanks, in part, to the Mathematics Department. [ 31 ] Jh WCLLj. lOhat'A Qookinq? The attractive Home Economics Department of JHS is one to be proud of. The tempting aroma of various dishes can find its source in the home economics kitchen where Miss Norma Oliverio is the teacher. Here, girls who have signed up for home economics, either as a solid or an elective, learn the necessary fundamentals to help them become better home makers in the future. The girls learn the care of food and how to prepare a variety of meals which are tasty, attractive, and nutritional, as well as economical. to a man’A hsiaJii. Miss Oliverio's classes also include learning how to tell different grades of meat, the proper method of freezing food, and how to count calories. The proper way to keep and clean a house is also emphasized. With this knowledge of cooking and home making, the graduates from the JHS Home Economics Department are well on their way to becoming home makers of tomorrow. [ 32 ] The hum of sewing machines and the snipping of scissors can be heard in the clothing classes of JHS. The busy seamstresses, under the supervision of Mrs. Gloria Fenik, are kept busy all through the year on clothing projects. Mrs. Fenik sees that the girls who are taking sewing for the first year learn the basic fun- damentals. These include altering ready-to-wears, learning live color and design, care of clothing and what to make. Jo Aow a A am JcUkhionA in ike Vlfijnkinq Girls who have had clothing before are taught new methods and ways to help them increase their knowledge of fabrics and materials. The girls start with a simple sewing project and grad- ually work into more difficult projects. In the hall showcase, attractive outfits, designed by the stu- dents, are on display throughout the year. [ 33 ] (Bhsualdnq th £anquaqsi fiaWiWi The Language Department of JHS this year included Spanish, German, French, and Latin. Our Language Department is an asset to our school because of its broad program. The electronic age is reflecting itself in Johnstown High's new and modern language lab- oratory. The students of JHS are fortunate enough to have one of the few language laboratories in Pennsylvania. Here the students are taught to improve their pronunciation, intonation, and compre- hension. The department, as a whole, takes in various phases of learning. For example, the Spanish taught is not the formal Spanish. It is the language spoken in the South American Countries. The Spanish course also includes learning the customs and way of living of the Spanish-speaking peo- ples. French students studied French history and literature. Latin students studied Grecian and Latin classics and obtained a thorough knowledge of grammar. At Christmas, Latin students sang Christmas carols in Latin at Central Park, and at the end of the year the German students held a Schmier-Kase Pumpemickle party. [ 34 ] cScZc jgp, (BoaJla o$ Spa The foundation of the space program is science. This subject also holds an important position in JHS' curricula. JHS' Science Department branches out into the physiology, biology, chemistry and physics fields. This variety gives the JHS' students a chance to look beyond the horizon. The Science Department's function is to teach and inform the students of the fundamentals underlying the myriad mysteries of the science world. These will be the future inventors of the New-Age. Highlighting the Science Department's program is the Johnstown Science Fair, where JHS' projects are exhibited. If the projects are exceptionally good they may be entered in the Indiana and Hershey Fairs. If the United States is to continue as a world power, we will need the knowledge and leadership of these science enthusiasts. [ 35 ] UcVu h}--Jk Spicc oft £ife Variety in the learning process is necessary to create a well-rounded person. The everyday routine of academic classes is broken into by the physical education classes of Mr. Michael Garbinski. Boys of JHS look forward to gym class. They know the wide variety of activities physical ed- ucation provides. For instance, during the year, the students participate in a physical fitness test, play such sports as basketball, volleyball, baseball, and train in wrestling. Gym classes also develop leadership, strong bodies, coordination, sportsmanship, and friend- ships. The department proves a delight to those who realize that physical and mental development go hand in hand. Slun and Jhim in $ipn QlaAAQA Football, badminton, volley ball, basketball, and calisthentics are just a few of the activities in which JHS girls participated this year. Under the watchful eyes of Miss Carolyn Tilley and Mrs. Margaret Pipan, physical education was an important part of school life. Moans and groans were often heard from girls discovering muscles they never knew they had before. Physical education is a required subject for all. It provides a lively break from the class room routine. You sit in all your other classes— We never sit in gym class! The gym was also used for basketball games, wrestling matches, and dances during the year. [ 37 ] Vocational StudentA (phepate foh the Qkatlenqe of SnduAthq Every boy who chooses a vocational course at Johnstown High School can be well assured of competent instruction and practical application of his training. Each year JHS turns out boys trained in plumbing, carpentry, printing, sheet metal, drafting, auto body, auto mechanics, and elec- tricity. This instruction prepares each individual boy to meet the challenge of industry after gradua- tion or to further his education at an institution of higher learning. [ 38 ] (IniidjanA in Wood The boys in Wood Shop, under the direction of Mr. Robert Anderson, are the cabinetmakers and skilled craftsmen of tomorrow. Their course in Wood Shop is divided into two parts. The boys must follow a definite course of study as outlined by the state. They have their own textbooks from which they study and printed tests which they must pass in order to successfully continue the course. The second part of the course is practical training in working with wood. Anything which the school might need, and which is approved by the proper authorities, is made by the boys in the Wood Shop. Probably the most familiar result of their work is the very attractive lectern which graces the auditorium stage. They also make bookshelves, gavels, desks, cupboards, chests, and construction blocks for the elementary schools. The work done in this shop is of professional quality. The shop provides excellent basic train- ing and practical experience for the students. Students are proud of what is produced in this worth- while shop. (phinbihA’ (phaqteAA . . . What would people think of our Alma Mater if we didn't have a high school newspaper, tickets and programs for special events, and schedules and posters for athletic affairs. How would teachers and administrators feel about not having a teachers' directory. For those reasons alone we should be proud of our Print Shop. Under the direction of Mr. Kenneth Artice and Mr. Samuel Marek, the student printers not only produce material for our school, but also learn a trade that they can pursue after graduation from high school. 9 Ylotoh WlswdsihA Who's going to replace that blown head gasket on Your 1964 automobile? Chances are it will be one of the budding mechanics turned out by our Auto Mechanics teachers—Mr. John Buriak and Mr. Paul Oleksa. In the well-equipped shop at Cochran Junior High, these boys are taught the fundamen- tals of mechanical repair. They start each day with 30 to 40 minutes of classroom instruc- tion. Throughout the year they are kept busy overhauling en- gines, rewiring cars, and re- placing rings, pistons, wrist pins, valves, and other vital parts. With our excellent instruc- tors and equipment, our Auto Mechanics shop is supplying the world with a fine group of skilled repairmen. [ 41 ] jWcS' Sfuouji-dqsi fcnqbuuihA The potential engineers of the space age are now enrolled in the Industrial Arts drafting course. These students are furthering their education in their selected fields, whether it be electrical, mech- anical, structural or architectural. The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires that Industrial Arts courses be made avail- able, on the high school level, to all students. Those taking drafting, as a solid, average four hours a week and an annual 150 hours of actual experience. As an objective, the course endeavors to give students the strongest background possible for a college course in engineering. Modern techniques and processes are taught, and the student comes to see drafting as an integral part of our times. In effect, drafting is actually the graphic language of all engineering from the machinist, to the mathematician, to the space engineer. Unlimlhid OppoAiumiiM tih ad Our Alma Mater can be proud of their electricians who will take their place in the space age. The opportunities available to the boys of Johnstown High's Electric Shop will be unlimited in the future. Electric Shop students have progressed rapidly while at JHS. Under the supervision of Mr. Charles Auker, they learned the fundamentals of currents and circuits. During the year the boys also learn to re- wind generators and motors. With knowledge as their power, these boys are ready to challenge any electrical problems peculiar to any new structure. The boys of the JHS Electric Shop say, Thanks,'' to their Alma Mater for opening the door of opportunity. Jhe Safety J'bud HoyA Although it seems isolated from the rest of our Alma Mater, the JHS Machine Shop is a vital part of our school. Under the direction of Mr. William Allen, the Machine Shop produces leaders in tomorrow's industry. The main rule of the Machine Shop is Safety First. While these students learn the proper use and care of scales, calipers, and micrometers, safety is their first consideration. Two of their many projects are candle holders and metal hammers. Because the Machine Shop operates in complete safety, our Alma Mater has an excellent safety record. VYbrtjcd IfYlaqkiavM One of the most popular shops offered at JHS is Auto Body. Our future bodymen receive instruction in the fine art of auto body repair from Mr. Frank Krall. In the well-equipped shop at Cochran, the boys learn how to operate oxygen and acetylene welding equipment. These boys must also have a knowledge of approx- imately 50 panels that make up the body of a modern auto. With the dents smoothed out and the rust removed, a car can be rolled into the paint room at Cochran. The boys are proud of their modem facilities and enjoy working in a shop with its own light and air system. [ 45 ] Mechanics applied, to Engineering. QMS' Sfittce (plcmmhA Room 127 is the launching pad for Amer- ica's space planners. Each year the space age will demand more and more expe- rienced draftsmen. JHS' draftsmen learn to be accurate and precise, and are then trained to apply their learning to school projects. Every project needs a plan and JHS' drafting students provide these plans, which vary from mechanical design to ar- chitectural design. Students work on proj- ects, which match their field of drafting. The future design of many new struc- tures lies in the hands of these students with their T-squares and pencils. A new world means new ideas in design. Shod: Wished BoijA (foiAwsh Qall jo$ 9nduAJjiy As a huge Redstone rocket rises from its pad at Cape Canaveral and begins to toss its val- uable payload into the heavens, we realize that this would be virtually impossible without the metal industry. At Cochran Junior High School, boys of JHS prepare for this challenge of the space age. These boys, under the instruction of Mr. Bruce Alter, study metals and their use in industry. The sheet metal students make varied articles and receive practical experience in the welding of these articles. Although it's many miles from JHS to the launching pads at the Cape, students at JHS already begin to answer the call of the metal industry. £ai Up and Qkan Up Every school day throughout the year the cafeteria staff of JHS is kept busy from 11:11 to 12:59. Headed by Mrs. Margaret Christner, the hungry mob of students are well taken care of with well-balanced meals at budget prices. The cafeteria personnel are hard-working women who start work before school begins and finish after the close of school. A jollier group of women can be found nowhere. The custodians of JHS are another group of hard-working people. These loyal men and women, headed by Walter McClelland are always ready when anything needs to be cleaned or repaired. They take care of the major jobs around the school and keep our Alma Mater bright and sparkling. OLLLcc ml ABRAHAM. D. ADAMS. J. ADAMS. L. ALEX. C. ALICARD1. E. DIANNE ABRAHAM—Academic Course. Helping to build the spirit of our Alma Mater was the written work produced by the journalism staff. Twenty-four students met the first period every day to produce the “Spectator and the “Cen- tralizer . Creative writing was taught as well as the fundamentals of journalistic writing. As a result, essays and poetry were produced along with editorials and feature stories. Design, lay-out, and balance of a newspaper were emphasized. The correct placement of news and the significance of a variety of news was taught. It is the purpose of the high school newspaper to bring the news to the student body in as interesting a way as possible. [ 85 ] (tfcdch iha Bihdin; Devoting much of their time to the production of the Spectator are the members of the Photography Staff of JHS. These individuals have given themselves to helping the photographers, which entails running errands, carrying equipment, being harassed for information throughout the day and being continually dragged in and out of classes. The Photography Staff, under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Bowes, does an efficient job of gathering subjects for pictures, fixing a time for the pictures to be taken, and in general assembling most of the photographic end of the Spectator. The final, and most tedious task of all, is the identification of each head which appears in the yearbook. [ 86 ] CVdi JtA at (x)ohk If anyone should happen to wander into room 410, a beehive of activity would be found. The piercing odor of turpentine and oil painting would immediately give the room away. The Art Department turned out examples of fine oil and water color pictures as well as pastel sketches. Students may enter poster and other various contests if they wish, or they may participate in varied crafts such as ceramics, metal tooling, and sculpture. Anyone with a certain amount of crea- tivity will always be welcome in room 410. [ 87 ] Officers—Bob Allison, Bill Bowers, Jim Reiter, Bob Burris, Bill Andrews, and John Benshoff. QcHS SiiukrdA aA OhcdtuhA Once again the skills of Demosthenes ring throughout the halls of JHS. The newly organized Debating Society elected officers and the debaters immediately began displaying their oratorical talents. Because the members did not feel that their skills were sufficiently developed for outside com- petition, the orators debated only within the club. Teams were chosen on a voluntary or assignment basis, with two affirmative and two negative debaters. The club is under the direction of Marian G. Varner, Mary Louise Kocerka, and Joan M. Puhala, who act as sponsors for the organization. Once again a JHS club will provide the nucleus for fun and advancement in the way of education. [ 88 ] mmm (HumA SiudmiA (RmvaAjckd Each year a group of outstanding seniors are admitted to the National Honor Society of Johns- town High School. The members are selected on the basis of their scholarship, leadership, character, and service in the school and the community. The most memorable occasion of the year was the Honor Society assembly, at which time sen- ior members who qualified became members of the Touchstone Chapter, sponsored by Mrs. George Kocerka. William Andrews, Jack Wood, Jack Slabe, ana Forrest Allison interpreted the four ideals which the Honor Society represent. The new members recited the National Honor Society pledge to close the assembly. Olticers—Louis Ulery, Forrest Allison, Dorothy Peskuric, Donna Reed. J'OAbm rljmUi Sani Holi . . . The students who participate in the drivers' education class spend two periods a week in the classroom and two periods a week in the actual practice of driving. The basic fundamentals are taught in the classroom. Actual experience in driving is gained by driving the cars on the city streets. There are approximately 60 students in the two drivers' education classes. Only two or three students are taken in one car for each lesson. For the greater safety of all concerned, the cars are equipped with dual controls. Mr. Frank Weaver and Mr. Phillip Gettys, instructors in drivers' education have said, More people have been killed on the highways since 1900 than in all the wars America has fought. This is why the drivers' training course is one of the most important in high school. The course teaches safe and courteous driving. If this course is taken and passed in high school, insurance rates are cheaper for the person involved. S wux JJvwuqh. Sa uQksi As a service organization to our Alma Mater, the JHS Key Club is unexcelled. This year 81 boys contributed their time and efforts to projects within the school and in the community. A pea- nut brittle sale, a Heart Fund drive, a fashion show, and many successful fun nights are a few of the many projects the Key Club organized and carried through. The purpose of the Key Club is to develop the potentials of leadership in its members; the club s motto is We Build. Under the sponsorship of the Kiwanis Club and the supervision of Mr. Ralph Gillman, the Key Club has made leaders of whom our Alma Mater can be proud. [ 93 ] wq, Sonq (BihdA, Sinq Each Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, the fifth period, we can hear the cheerful voices of our singing song birds. These are the days that the JHS Girls' Chorus meets to practice in the auditorium. The chorus is open to any girl who enjoys singing and music. Under the direction of Mr. Carl B. Miller, these girls work hard to develop pleasing and pleasant tones. Each year the girls perform at various events. This group of juniors and seniors began their year of music with the Thanksgiving program. The Christmas assembly was also highlighted with selec- tions by the chorus. Their big performance was the annual spring concert. This year marked the third annual bus trip taken by the chorus to Indiana State College. Here the members enjoyed Indiana's yearly musical. Every Friday, sixth period, when the chorus was in its entirety, the halls echoed with songs such as: The Christ Theme” from Ben Hur, Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah, and songs from Alice in Wonderland. They also made the blue-and-black signs which were tacked up at games and in the cafeteria. Outstanding events of the year were an initiation party for the new members, a banquet in honor of the seniors of the club, the annual Bermuda Barbecue, and the annual winter formal. Sprained ankles, twisted knees, and strained backs were only a few of the crippling blows dealt the Trojan warriors. Even so, the Men of Troy still managed a season record of five wins and four defeats. The Trojans trounced their first five opponents, but any W.P.I.A.L. title hopes were squashed by McKeesport. Altoona and Har-Brac were the next to conquer the stunned Blue and Black. In the season finale, the powerful Un- iontown Red Raiders clinched the state championship and concluded a some- what dreary Trojan gridiron campaign. Dick Kondash takes off on an end sweep. [ 119 ] iotf jOjUA boijA TROJANS TRAMPLE ERIE EAST 32-0 The Blue and Black made new Head Coach Francis Mihalic's debut a success. CAL McCRAY and JEFF RICHARDSON paved the way for the Trojans with two touchdowns each. DICK KONDASH scored the other JHS touchdown, while DAVE BATRUS added two extra points from placements. Spectacular runs by McCRAY, KONDASH, and quarterback JOHN SLADKI highlighted the game. Meanwhile, the Trojan pass defense was given a rigid workout. Going to the air lanes 39 times, Erie connected with 16 and had 6 intercepted by the alert JHS secondary. JHS CASHES IN 44-6 The Williamsport Millionaires left their bank doors open and the Men of Troy with- drew seven touchdowns for an easy victory. CALVIN McCRAY and JEFF RICHARDSON led the scoring parade with three and two touch- downs respectively. DICK KONDASH, RALPH GOODMAN, and DAVE BATRUS also took part in the Millionaire robbery. Jeff produced the longest run from scrimmage with a 76-yard scoring jaunt. MEN OF TROY BURY RED RAIDERS 26-6 The JHS Trojans successfully passed their initial WPIAL test at the expense of New Ken- sington. Led by DICK KONDASH, the Trojans put on a brilliant display of speed and power. Two six-pointers by JOHN SLADKI and single tallies by KONDASH and JEFF RICH- ARDSON proved too much for the Red Raiders. Alert defensive play by GARY PODOLAK and RON HEIDER started two JHS scoring thrusts. TROJANS WHITEWASH RAMBLERS 25- 0 JHS posted victory number four with a 25-0 whitewash of Windber. Left halfback CAL McCRAY scooted off right tackle 30 yards and quarterback JOHN SLADKI twisted and turned 58-yards to register the Trojans first touch- downs. Lineman JOHN THOMAS then recov- ered a fumble in the Windber end zone for another JHS score. DICK KONDASH closed the scoring on a 38-yard scamper. BLUE KNIGHTS ROMP 26- 0 The Blue and Black, in their first afternoon contest since 1955, added Redstone to their list of victims. In the first half, a pass from quarterback JOHN SLADKI to DICK KONDASH netted the Trojans' first tally. In the second half, a SLADKI pass to CAL McCRAY started the rout. McCRAY and KON- DASH again added tallies to post the Men of Troy's victory string to five. [ 120 ] TIGERS WIN SQUEAKER 14-13 TIGERS DOWN TROJANS 14-6 The McKeesport Tigers ended the Trojan win streak at five games and eliminated the Men of Troy from the WPIAL Class AA race. After scoring once in the first stanza, the Tigers added their second touchdown on a sensational 48-yard pass from LARRY ZAMBO to RUDY NICORA late in the second period. SAM LIBERTORE added both extra points. A fumble recovery by PAUL NEATROUR set up a touchdown run by DICK KONDASH in the first stanza, and Dick kicked the extra point. RON GOISOVICH and GARY PODOLAK paced the Trojan detense which didn't allow a first down in the second half. JOHN SLADKI hit CALVIN McCRAY with a 33-yard touch- down pass late in the fourth quarter. The Tigers blocked the extra point attempt to save the win. JHS LOSES SECOND 21-6 Playing on a cold, windy night, the un- defeated Altoona Mountain Lions grinded out a victory over arch rival Johnstown. Altoona scored three times before the Blue and Black were able to tally. BOB PRINDIBLE, MEL FRYE, and BOB FOGLE registered the Lions' touchdowns. FRYE also added three extra points. The Trojans finally were able to score in the last minute of play. RON HEIDER'S fumble recovery set up a 51-yard pass play from FRAN EVANISKO to DICK KONDASH. PAUL NEATROUR then scored on a 7-yard pass to end the game. The Trojans of Johnstown High encountered their third straight defeat of the season at the hands of the Har-Brac Tigers. The highlight of the scoreless first half was a beautiful intercep- tion of a Har-Brac pass by RALPH GOODMAN. In the second half, the Men of Troy tallied first on an eight-yard touchdown run by CAL McCRAY. Then with only three minutes left to play Har-Brac scored twice on runs by LARRY WIDMAN and TERRY DRIVER. WID- MAN added both extra points from placements. UNIONTOWN CAPTURES AA CHAMPIONSHIP 12-0 The rampaging Uniontown Red Raiders won their tenth straight game with a 12-0 victory over the Trojans. The Red Raiders captured the WPIAL Class AA championship on touchdowns by PETE SMITH and JOHN MANNING. Johnstown's only scoring threat came in the first period. The Trojans marched from their 29 to the Uniontown 37. The threat ended when JOHN SLADKI'S fourth-down pass went incomplete. DICK KONDASH prevented a Red Raider tally late in the first half when he pilfered a SMITH pass on the goal line. RALPH GOODMAN and PAUL NEATROUR also played outstandingly on defense for the Blue and Black. They look as if they just got off a boat from Vienna. Both have charred briar pipes pok- ing through their jungle-like beards. Even if I didn't know they were psychiatrists, I could tell by looking at them. Sigmund Freud lives again! Another Freudian character seems to be follow- ing these two distinguished thinkers. Why, I'd know her anywhere. That's JANET OLSEN, girl psychologist. I can imagine how this trio is twist- ing and untwisting poor, unsuspecting minds. kind of delegate is coming this way. The United States Ambassador to Hodgedypodge, MICHAEL DENK, is heading right toward me. I'd sure like to hear about the troubles of that little shiekdom, but I think I'll just slip away. It surely takes all kinds to make a reunion. We go from diplomats to smoke jumpers. One of the best smoke jumpers in the country is VINCE LaBUDA, JHS Class of '63. A fellow for- ester is DAVID KOCHER. Our park system will never be the same. 145 I can't see who the next alumni coming through the door are, but by the sound of their mellow voices. I'd say they are radio announcers. Yes, I'm right. JEFF KRONE, PAUL YATES, and DENNY LYNN are now three top DJ's with na- tional radio networks. The fine arts seem to be populated by JHS graduates. DAVID BELZ is a commercial artist. JOHN CHRISTIAN SNOW is swinging his brushes at defenseless canvases in his studio in the Vil- lage. FLAY MASSEY, twister extraordinary, has worker they have! I stand corrected about men of science and mathematics. No one can deny DOROTHY PESKURIC is a woman of mathematics. Stumbling in behind is CHIP CAUFFIEL. He must have taken a last look at the skies. A weather- man is always working. After that band of mad scientists, it's refresh- ing to see a little sobriety. The Reverends BARRY SCHRADER and CALVIN McCRAY are followed by missionary BETH KING. I understand this trio is doing a fine job in several parts of the world. I can see the quiet isn't going to last long. Here come a group of businessmen acting as if Ray Massey has an eye for that pie. his own fashion house. Ever hear of Fashions by Massey? And if I ever want to build a house. I'll know who to contact — architect ERIC GEORGE. It seems these grads enter in groups accord- ing to profession. Here come the men of science and mathematics. Leading the pack is former Student Council leader WILL BENNETT, a chem- ical engineer. RAY ORLOSKY, a CPA and JACK SLABE, actuary, are not just businessmen. Their love of mathematics has them now doing research on the subject during off-hours.' And what a co- What’s this? they were at a convention. JAMES REITER leads the pack. He's followed by lawyer JOHN LAW- RENCE and his legal secretary JUDY BLAIR. At the end of the group is FORREST ALLISON, thumb-tack tycoon. The first social gathering is about to begin. I guess all the groups are here. The only ones left are either lone-wolves or watchless stragglers. And here they come. The first is a loner from the world of sports, Arabian horseshoe player TOM MEAGHER. (One other sportsman, LEN FERENCHIK, has a game to play for the New York Yankees today, so he probably wouldn't be [ 146 ] here. I imagine sports journalist JOHN JAMES will be covering that game.) Enough of those who are absent; here come a few more late grad- uates. RUDY ROSA, a night-club sensation, just arrived from a successful engagement at DON KOT'S Playboy Club. Following him is GARY ALTEMUS who just returned from his own type of successful engagement. His was at the local animal hispital. Gary is a veterinarian. Another group seems to be filing in. This trio were always together at JHS. Engineers DEAN BERGHANE and JOHN ALT flank their who lounged against their lockers and made up lies to avoid teachers' caustic comments about late home work are now responsible ladies and gentlemen. They're all holding down top jobs in American industry and government. Who would have thought ten years could make such a dif- ference? I guess, though, that some of the old high- school madness returned to these important per- sonages during the reunion. There were the usual broken tumblers, torn streamers, and hurt feelings. But the craziest feat I heard about was the moon trip. Seven of our glorious alumni Here we are again! Career Day brings in the army medical compatriot, Dr. JOHN BENSHOFF. Behind them runs nuclear physicist BILL BOWERS. I just found out why these scientists and engineers are just now arriving. They've been at a science convention presided over by LOUIS ULERY, a mathematics professor. He was assisted by his old friend, physicist BOB DeFAZIO. Everyone seems to be inside now. If I run, I can make it before they close the door. I shall now turn my time machine to three days after the reunion. The place: my Vermont retreat. The speaker: who else? That was some reunion. All those crazy kids decided to charter a trip to the moon. They planned to leave after the first day of the reunion and return in time for the second day. But some- how it didn't work out So, if vou see DON ARDOLINO, RITA ALTIMORE, LINDA BOYARSKY, FRAN EVANISKO, JUDY LEHMAN, SUSAN CRAWFORD, or DAVE REAM floating through space, tell them they missed a great reunion. I guess it's time to turn off my time machine. Our little trip should have convinced you. Re- member, save a space on your June, 1973, cal- endar for the tenth annual reunion of the Johns- town High School Class of 1963. I'll be looking for you!
