SHINE, Superintendent of Schools Great Neck Public Schools Great Neck New York 11020 PHONE 916 462-8690 Pmipp Administration Building 349 Lakcvillc Roao WILLIAM A. SHINE Supumntinocnt or Schools January 13, 1986 Dear Graduates: The publication of this yearbook—so aptly named Vista '86 —is one of many exciting events in the life of a high school senior. It captures the essence of your years at Great Neck South High School: your education, your extracurricular activities, your friendships with fellow students, teachers, and staff members. In the years to come, it will be a fitting reminder of your schooling in one of the finest secondary institutions in the country. Each of you, as individuals within the Class of 1986, has already made a significant contribution to your school, your family, and your community. Now it is time to reach for loftier vistas—in higher education and in the working place. When you come together again, perhaps at a reunion ten or twenty years from now, we hope your lives will be full and that your memories of Great Neck South High School will be important and indelible. Heartiest congratulations and the best of luck! 18 William A. GROSHANS, Business BOARD OF EDUCATION left-right: Constance P. McNichol, Robert Rosenthal. President Donald L. Ashkenase, Lawrence Gross, Vice President Mona Fuchs. PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT ASSOCIATION Left-right: Esther Oriol. Magda Liakes. Henry Levitt, Rady Bruell. Sitting: Amy Orange, Rochelle Grossman. 19 GILBERT BLUM. Principal EACH YEAR I TRY TO EXPRESS THE FEELINGS OF THE FACULTY TO THE GRADUATING CLASS. IT IS DIFFICULT BEING UNIQUE, SINCE OUR WISHES REMAIN THE SAME. OUR HOPES FOR A BETTER WORLD REST IN YOUR HANDS. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT. OUR WORLD IS THE BEST THAT HUMANKIND HAS KNOWN. YET, THERE REMAIN GROSS INJUSTICES, DEPRIVATION, PREJUDICE, STARVATION AND VIOLATIONS OF HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS. YOU HAVE THE TOOLS TO HELP. WE HOPE THAT YOU HAVE THE DESIRE AS WELL. REACH OUT TO THOSE IN NEED AND TO THOSE LESS FORTUNATE. THE JOY OF GIVING AND HELPING CANNOT BE SURPASSED. WE HOPE THAT YOU FEEL THE WARMTH OF YOUR ACTIONS. OUR EFFORTS HAVE BEEN DEVOTED TO HELPING YOU DEAL WITH THE FUTURE. IF WE HAVE FAILED IT IS NOT THROUGH LACK OF TRYING. FINALLY, THE ENTIRE FACULTY WISHES FOR EACH OF YOU HAPPY AND USEFUL LIVES. 20 ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS PAUL RUPFF RUDOLPH KNAPP DEANS MAUREEN NEWMAN, Students ROBERT DeKOFF, Special Programs EILEEN KEHOE 21 SECRETARIES Geraldine Pentecost, Marianne Truglio, (sitting) Mary Ingham. When reminded of our high school days, certain images come to mind. Of our fondest memories, we will recall our senior year as the greatest of our lives. Four years spent working, and playing and laughing, and crying, culminated by a year in which the anxiety of the future, was overwhelmed by the reality of the present. We reveled in our silliness, yet, with all of this fool-hearty child-like fun, we all realized that it would be a difficult goodbye, once it was over. In our senior year alone, we experienced earthquakes, a volcano eruption, Halley’s comet. Hurricane Gloria, the first shuttle disaster. Ronald Reagan, a defecit that had run a-muck, Live-Aid. Hands Across America, Farm Aid, hijackings, Mafia trials, Marcos overthrown, starvation. Scharensky’s freedom, a summit, and the Statue of Liberty was finally ready for her 100th birthday celebration. Closer to home, we saw the Seven Seas dinner reopen, Baskin Robbins close. In its place, just what we needed — yet another jewelry store. Jay’s became Roberts, while the streets became more crowded every day. We ate at Millies and Gino’s, and saw movies at our own triplex, at Douglaston's six theaters, and the Sunrise Multiplex with its choice of fourteen movies. Infinity, and Applause were new names on Middle Neck Road. Even our own school was changing, with workers beginning renovations. We had Jane Fonda, Physical fitness tests, desk graffiti, spiked hair, shaved sides, flat-tops, blue hair?, snow days, hurricane day, pajama day, report cards, scholarships, broken lockers, broken hearts, the school store, no hot showers, school without Tricarios’?, scarfs, boots, military, early dismissal, late buses, bad attitudes, good attitudes, smokers. I’m a Senior!, beach days, prom dates, nights, snowball fights, the dreaded car-wrecking curve. Graduation! Whether you’re dying to get out. or praying hard that it won't end. it makes little difference. When you leave high school, for good or bad. you will most certainly take a piece of all the people you’ve known with you. High school days,. . . hold on to the images. Collage Editors: D. All they had to do was fill in the academic and attitude grades in pen. pencil, or whatever they wish to use. The secretary simply typed in these A great majority of the time was spent on the printing of the lists . Blum continued. ”ll takes five hours to run class lists, verification lists, and report cards Wc are taking steps to reduce that. DAN, ALAN, CHRIS, ALAIN, DAVE, BARRY, HOWARD ATAWAYTAGO MIKE MOM DAD “The First Period Mob This is the story of the best class ever English II honors and all of our endeavors We were 12 in number and we were the best Our trivia questions were better than the rest We met every morning at 8 o'clock We walked into the room and there was Doc Rock We cracked a few jokes and read many plays The periods flew by but so did the days When the year came to an end we all felt blue We’d miss our new family and Doc’s lies too. Now it’s all a fond memory, one we'll hold dear We toast to our future with song and cheap beer. He strutted his stuff even though he was small With Cuban heels he was five feet tall We sat in a circle and talked about life Discussions on religion, sex. and his wife Never again will there be such a stew Musicians and brains, clowns and jocks too Our high school life must fade into the past But this memory we cherish will forever last 245 0 0 OUR VERY BEST WISHES FOR SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS TO DINA AND THE CLASS OF 1986 ALL OUR LOVE, MOM, DAD, EDDIE AND JOE To the Class of 1986, We Wish You Good Luck And Success. As friends travel their separate ways, relation- ships sometimes fade. Let each of us make a contract with ourselves, our friends, and as the entire graduating class of 1986. The below clauses are the terms for the contract: 1) Keep in touch with high school friends. You will encounter this type of relation- ship only once in your lifetime. 2) Take good care of your parents, because without them you would not be here. 3) Do unto others what you would do unto yourself. 4) Take it easy on your automobile, because insurance and auto body rates are sky- high. 5) Have a high school reunion 5 to 10 years from now and then make sure that we have one every 10 years from now. 6) Never drink and drive. 7) Stand up for what you believe in. 8) Do the best you can and no matter what anybody tells you, that is all anyone can ask of you. 9) Brush your teeth twice a day and after meals. 10) Don’t watch too much “Dynasty.” It has been proven to kill brain cells. What- ever you do, don’t let your children grow up to be like anyone in the graduating class of 1986. Stay healthy and good luck in whatever projects you pursue.
