Grossman superintendent Gilbert Blum, Principal Shortly after you receive this book, you as graduating seniors will be leaving your secure surroundings and will be traveling on very different paths. With this comes the realization that each of you are truly individuals. The direction of that path will be determined by your actions. My personal hopes are for each of you to travel on that path with the minimum of disappointment and with the maximum of happiness. As you think about that future, think about how you would wish to be measured, and how you would like others to think of you. In helping you focus on these questions, I offer the words of former President John F. Kennedy as he spoke to the Massachusetts Legislature shortly after his election to the Presidency. In this talk he expressed how he would like to be measured. First, am I truly a man of courage — with the courage to stand up to one's enemies and the courage to stand up, when necessary, to one's associates — the courage to resist public pressure, as well as private greed. Secondly, am I truly a man of judgment — with the perceptive judgment of the future as well as the past — of my own mistakes as well as the mistakes of others -- with wisdom to know what I do not know, and enough candor to admit it. Thirdly, am I truly a man of integrity — a man who will not run from the principles in which he believes or the people who believe in him. Finally, am I truly a man of dedication — with an honor mortgaged to no single individual or group, and compromised by no private obligation or aim, but devoted solely to serving my fellow man. Courage, judgment, integrity and dedication — on what better traits could each of us hope to be measured. Meet this challenge with vigor, enthusiasm and optimism. The world is less than perfect — but it is the best that any age has offered. It is yours. Its hopes and dreams for securing human dignity for all are in your hands. 36 Tf assistant principals ■H-H 1 1 Paul Rupff Rudolph Knapp deans 1 Maureen Newman, - y Robert Dekoff, Special Programs secretaries Left to Rig Cathy Cow ht: Elaine Stone, es, Mary Ingham, (sitting) Geraldine Pentecost M guidance department Joseph Zanchelli, Department Head Robert Paddock Pauline Lipeles Paulette Kaplan' Ruth Orange I'll. We began the school year psyched to be seniors. Burning to become that mythical party creature, we tried hard to live fast. We threw open-house parties and became experts on the economics of Meister Brau, Amoco Hi Test. Tenax, and other strategic com- modities. We cheered to the excitement of a kitchen fire in September, avoided pep rallies in November, vacationed in December. In February we laughed at the Comedy Cafe. In April we worried about the Prom and college in that order. In June we said our farewells to an epoch of our lives, high school. Outside of school, the world turned, blind to our petty tribulations. Democratic Nominee Walter Mon- dale chose Geraldine Ferraro, the first female vice- presidential candidate, as his running mate . and was defeated bv incumbent Ronald Reagan in forty- nine states. The CIA mined Nicaraguan harbors and supplied guns to El Salvador. In India, the Union Car- bide plant at Bhopal leaked pesticide and two thousand people died. Princess Diana bore her sec- ond son. Prince Harry, and another great lady, the Statue of Liberty, underwent a ten million dollar face- lift. ' even as we ton cafe burned to the around as watched. The Har Closer to home. Great Neck changed impton cafe burned To the grot next door Toby's Burger House opened. That great student refuge, second only to Scobee's, The Seven Seas diner, much to every gourmet's consternation, was closed down for renovation. To the delight of every teen princess. Benetton opened its snining « ■ green door on Middle Neck Road. In fashion, androgeny was in. Ties for girls and studded belts for guys (some guys) were in. The shirts on our backs were Ton Sur Ton, our shoes Reebok, Edwin was the label we saw from behind. All Great Neck swooned upon the introduction of Calvin Klein underwear. Men's undershirts adorned women's shoulders while every- body told time by their SWATCH. Fashionably equipped, we stepped out into the world of the night. We danced till there were blisters on our feet at The Cat Club, 107 North, and Cartoon's. If Cinema was our pleasure, we repaired to the Squire Triplex or the monster seven at the Douglaston Movieworld. There we devoured such exotic works as Beverly Hills Cop. The Breakfast Club. Flamingo Kid, The Killing Fields and who will ever forget that Arnold Schwarzenegger masterpiece ... The Terminator. Af- ter the movie, we all met at the Scobee Diner whose parking lot filled with Datsuns, Pontiacs. and Hondas, with an occasional Porsche or Jensen-Healy thrown in. Our car radios were tuned to the hot stations: WLIR for the avant garde. WNEW for the classic rockers, and WPLJ. WAPP, and Z100 for the other iconoclasts The music we listened to was U2, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Prince, Madonna, Huey Lewis. Bruce Springsteen, and Cyndi Lauper. We leave behind in these halls of South something of our childhood, something of our innocence. High school will remain in our memories as the last truly free period of our lives, a time when all doors to the future are open. We must try not to think what would have happened had not graduation interfered but rather be thankful for the time we had. 97 pajama day The Scott D. Moss Wolk-o-thon was held on Oct. 14,1984 at Manhasset Valley Parte Although we did not reach our goal, we came quite close to raising S30.000 which will be donated to Long Island Jewish and North Shore University Hospital. The people who made this possible and a success were April Alma. Joy Levinson, Jennifer Alma. Howard May. Lisa Hazehjian. and Lily Giordano. The walk vehicles and all the others who helped ore also to be commended. This year in addition to pajama day there was also Rude Day, Tie Hat Day. Hawaiian Beach Day, Color Week, Nerd Day. and Backward Day. But if seniors Pat Mullin Israel Gonzalez, Rich Misiano can step in and hold their own, the defense should be strong again. The offense should remain strong with senior Greg Minard, Billy McDermott and Michael Moser. Coach Meyer and Coach Crowley have been working the team hard at practice, and have instilled confidence in all of the players. The team has the talent to be one of the contenders for the County and we are all hoping for a very successful season. 194 N Top Row: Josh Printz, Steve Melzer, Adam Lukeman, Mike Barnett, Marcus Israel, Todd Harrison, Steve Cary, Dwight Holovach, Jason Minard, Danny Meron, Aaron Mashoian, Greg Fortunoff, Jay Friedman, Coach Ron Blaufarb Middle Row: Peter Toumbekis, Bobby Dorfman, Alan Klein, Mustafa Ozkiroglu, Tony Katagas, Steve Misiano, Neil Braunner, Robert Brzowski, Adam Pinsley, Mike Galgano Bottom Row: Jeff Ashkenase, Greg Guarton, Larry Tarasuk, Marc Cohen, Gary Locke, Russell Stuart, Benji Max, Peter Diminich JT I I I I I I Top Row: Richard Mack. Passerby during team practices have been overheard to say, WOW!?, these guys aren't as bad as everyone says they are ... in fact they're quite marvelous. The seniors of this year's team include Richard Mack, Gregg Bresner, Eric Bernstein, and Tim Radin, all of whom are playing well and expect an undefeated season. Supporting underclassmen are Josh Podell, Peter Goodman, Joey Lee, and Steve Tsimbinos. Coach Jerry Levine commented, There are six returning lettermen who are the base of a very strong team. Hopefully, they will set an example for the new members in dedication and 4 hard work to lead us to a successful year.” Some of the teams we will face are North, Port Washington, Roslyn, Wheatley, and Herricks. Sorry for the gray hairs 245 To The Class of 19 '5 June 3X5 Dear Class, Our lime has finally arrived. We are Ihe graduating class of 19X5. Four years have elapsed since we first entered this winding maze of hallways. Time's passage was indeed rapid. As we make the transition into the real world” our feelings are of a mixed nature. We are happy, in the sense that there is a bold world ahead of us, with people to meet and dreams to conguer. But alas, we are saddened by the thought that our X:00 AM to 2:30 PM days will slip into mere memory. Within our high school careers lie the elements of transition from childhood to adulthood. Our high school experiences on both academic and social levels have helped us grow as human beings. In June when we go our separate ways, we will be leaving with a diploma and this yearbook. It is here, on the f ages of the yearbook, that the Vista Editors and Staff have attempted to preserve the essence of high school. It represents the activities you have participated in, the faculty that has guided you, and those that you have grown up with. We hope that as you reminisce through the pages of this yearbook, each picture may bring a smile to your face as you are enveloped by the memory rt provokes. Your Vista Yearbook is the culmination of hundreds of hours of hard work by many dedicated people. Without their dedication, talent, and enormous effort there would not be a yearbook. We greatly thank the following: Linda Grtman and Ann Chokas — It is hard to express our feelings of gratitude towards you guys. Your HO% commitment to the yearbook has made rt what rt is. It would have been impossible to complete rt without you. Thank you for everything, especially for putting up with us. Paul Rubin — Much thanks to a hard-nosed guy. Without you, we would have been an unorganized mess without pictures. Pam Sloves — Thanks for a fabulous job. Your help was invaluable.
