Miller, a former Superintendent of Schools who made significant contribu- tions to your high school, once urged: “Let us remember that we are building for a future that we can hardly envision but which will hold us accountable I would like to reaffirm his admonition for the Class of 1983. You are citizens of the twenty-first century. Your values, abilities, strengths and weaknesses will shape that future which once seemed to be so far away. For the 288 members of South’s first graduating class, the political, technological and cultural realities of 1983 were but inchoate thoughts. Yet they have assumed the enor- mous responsibility of life in our time. You will be just as ready to cope with the world of 2007 because you, too, have had a good education at home and at school. Even as the Class of 1959 could not predict the joys and sorrows of 1983, you are denied the specifics of your role in the future century. When you realize, however, that you are part of a con- tinuum of Great Neck students who have met the challenge, you should be encouraged to embrace your private destiny. The District’s first graduating class in 1898 was well prepared for their journey through the twentieth century. I’m confident that you are as ready to shape the twenty-first! William A.
