THE SIL VER SCREEN VISTA 1983 Vol. 25 1 h W !i i!i!i!i ANNIVERSARY GREAT NECK PUBLIC SCHOOLS Great Neck, New York Phone 516 482-8650 Phipps Administration Building Dr. William A. Shine 345 Lakeville Road Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1983: John L. Miller, a former Superintendent of Schools who made significant contribu- tions to your high school, once urged: “Let us remember that we are building for a future that we can hardly envision but which will hold us accountable I would like to reaffirm his admonition for the Class of 1983. You are citizens of the twenty-first century. Your values, abilities, strengths and weaknesses will shape that future which once seemed to be so far away. For the 288 members of South’s first graduating class, the political, technological and cultural realities of 1983 were but inchoate thoughts. Yet they have assumed the enor- mous responsibility of life in our time. You will be just as ready to cope with the world of 2007 because you, too, have had a good education at home and at school. Even as the Class of 1959 could not predict the joys and sorrows of 1983, you are denied the specifics of your role in the future century. When you realize, however, that you are part of a con- tinuum of Great Neck students who have met the challenge, you should be encouraged to embrace your private destiny. The District’s first graduating class in 1898 was well prepared for their journey through the twentieth century. I’m confident that you are as ready to shape the twenty-first! William A. Shine Superintendent of Schools 18 Superintendent of Schools Assistant Superintendents Left: Samuel Polotnick, Instruction. Right: Robert Eicher; Business P.T.A. Left to Right: Rochelle Grossman. It is hard to believe that it has been four years since you, the seniors, entered South Senior as our first ninth grade class. Those initial days of transition were difficult ones for both you and this faculty. Time and common sense helped us overcome the difficulties and permitted us to enjoy each other’s presence. You were pioneers, not through your own choosing, but nevertheless you helped us to redefine our school to what it is today ... a place in which we can all take pride. There is hardly an adult who cannot say that he she could have done better in high school. I am sure, you, the seniors, are no exception. It is our hope, however, that the time that we spent together has helped you to grow and understand your role in this world of ours. No one in this big picture is insignificant. Each of you is a unique individual. There was never anyone quite like you before, nor will there be anyone like you in the future. We also hope that what you have learned will prepare you for an ever-changing world, one in which there is great need for tolerance, understanding, appreciation, knowledge and common sense. If we have failed to help you in this regard, I assure you that it was not through lack of trying. In days and years to come as you think of South Senior, I hope that you do have the image of a place where people truly cared. In behalf of the faculty I wish that you fulfill your dreams and that you live happy and useful lives. 20 Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Paul Rupff Maureen Joy DEAN OF STUDENTS L to R: Ruth Daigen. I remember all the laughter and happy occasions, and his love of freedom — not his untimely passing, for Daryl saw the brighter side of all that came. When our dejected little league team sat, musing over a defeat in the championship game, Daryl raised our spirits by shouting, “We played well today, but next time we’ll whip them!!” If a rainy spring afternoon brought disappointment to me, Daryl saw the showers as nourishment for nature to bloom. And when I visited him, as he lay quite ill in the hospital, he displayed a smiling face and a confident attitude that soon he would go home and resume a normal life. Upon hearing this, and seeing him glow, a sense of hope and optimism replaced my feelings of sadness. Every day of his life, Daryl demonstrated that happiness was achieved through maintaining a positive outlook, and sharing his joy with others. I greatly respect and admire him for his philosophy of life which kept his sun golden and his skies blue. He will always remain in our hearts and will never be forgotten. Alan Schmelkin 193 TO THE CLASS OF 1983 Dear Class, After four years of high school, culminating in that one important day in June, we’ve finally made it. That’s not to say that our trek hasn’t been a difficult one. In four years, each and every one of us has become an adult, carefully ministered to and taught by our parents and teachers. We owe them more than we can express for seeing us through our joyful but sometimes painful period of growing up. But before we rush into the world of colleges, job interviews and lifelong mates, we must remember to set aside a place for all our memories of Great Neck South, especially those of the senior year. It is here, in this book, that the Vista editors and workers have, over the course of the year, diligently crafted a yearbook suited for just that purpose. Without a doubt we are grateful for all their assistance. I’d like to extend special thanks to: David Koota and Neil Shapiro — Thank you for keeping the shutters snapping to meet all those deadlines, and for staying after whenever we needed you. Eric Poll and Marc Zuckerman — Your long hours chasing for ads are duly appreciated. Hal Gilenson — The hats were a complete success! Thanks for finishing your sports before the deadline. Barbara Kahn — Your work has been a great asset to the yearbook. We are grateful for the times you showed up just to check if we needed help. Denise Leprine — Thank you for helping us out on other sections, and for keeping us cheerful throughout all those frantic moments. Lauren Weisberg — Your dedication was wonderful! Remember all those last minute typing assignments? But most of all, thank you for being my friend. Ann Marie Lehman — We are truly grateful for your concern for our financial status, and for keeping us out of the red. Robert Shallow — Much obliges for staying after (when you would have loved to go home), guiding us through the year, and checking up on us. You’ve been my conscience all year! Mike Wilson — That was a fantastic idea in thinking up Candy Cane Day! You may have started a new tradition. Frank Rogers — Thank you very much for going out of your way to help us complete the cover. Phil Weis — Thanks for your patience, toleration and use of your typewriter. Gilbert Blum — Your support and assistance this year was invaluable. Never let it be said that we are a class that shouldn’t be proud of our achievements. Of the 307 seniors listed in this book, we have included some of the greatest minds, athletes, and spirited students that Great Neck South has ever had. This year we celebrate South's twenty-fifth anniversary. As I end this letter, it is my wish that everyone will enjoy this special anniversary, and all those to come. 6 194 P.S.
