SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS MORTIMER J. ADRAMOWITZ Great Neck Public Schools Great neck New York 11020 PHONE 916 482 6650 PM PP AC'M i NISTKATION BUILOINO 349 Lakeville Road MORTIMER I ABRAMOWITZ SUPtKINTCNOCNT O» SCHOOL January 4, 1982 Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents of South Senior High School: A minor retrospective, timely and forgivable. This will be the last message I write for VISTA. On June 30, I shall be retiring as Superintendent. As I look back on the fifteen years I have spent in Great Neck, twelve as Superintendent, I feel pride in the outstanding accomplishments of our schools. This year, both Great Neck South and Great Neck North were named by a national magazine as being among the twelve outstanding high schools in the U.S. While in the mid-70's North pointed to a Nobel Prize winner, now South has announced the first Rhodes Scholar. If past is prologue, over 90% of you will go on to higher education; nearly a fourth of your class will probably win New York State Regents Scholarships. Great Neck students can indeed hold their heads high because of these remarkable academic achievements. No less has been accomplished in the areas of arts, music, drama, athletics, and publications. Our schools have also spent much time and effort in helping youngsters with special physical and learning needs. I look back at the remarkable variety of demanding electives, the evolution of alternative schools, the special programs in law related education, the development of computer education, the expansion of the arts, especially drama and photography, the intelligent use of open campus, the significant participation of students in governance, the organization of a 9-12 high school - all of these and more have evolved over the past twelve years. The Great Neck Schools are a living and changing organism. Under new leadership to come, there will be further healthful change and improvement. I wish all of you success in your endeavors. Sincerely yours, • a iWuwtAtiV no Mortimer Jl. Abramowitz Superintendent of Schools 18 MJA:jb
