ADRAMOWITZ Great Neck Public Schools Great neck New York 11020 PHONE 916 482 6650 PM PP AC'M i NISTKATION BUILOINO 349 Lakeville Road MORTIMER I ABRAMOWITZ SUPtKINTCNOCNT OĀ SCHOOL January 4, 1982 Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents of South Senior High School: A minor retrospective, timely and forgivable. This will be the last message I write for VISTA. On June 30, I shall be retiring as Superintendent. As I look back on the fifteen years I have spent in Great Neck, twelve as Superintendent, I feel pride in the outstanding accomplishments of our schools. This year, both Great Neck South and Great Neck North were named by a national magazine as being among the twelve outstanding high schools in the U.S. While in the mid-70's North pointed to a Nobel Prize winner, now South has announced the first Rhodes Scholar. If past is prologue, over 90% of you will go on to higher education; nearly a fourth of your class will probably win New York State Regents Scholarships. Great Neck students can indeed hold their heads high because of these remarkable academic achievements. No less has been accomplished in the areas of arts, music, drama, athletics, and publications. Our schools have also spent much time and effort in helping youngsters with special physical and learning needs. I look back at the remarkable variety of demanding electives, the evolution of alternative schools, the special programs in law related education, the development of computer education, the expansion of the arts, especially drama and photography, the intelligent use of open campus, the significant participation of students in governance, the organization of a 9-12 high school - all of these and more have evolved over the past twelve years. The Great Neck Schools are a living and changing organism. Under new leadership to come, there will be further healthful change and improvement. I wish all of you success in your endeavors. You were the class that some felt were cheated because you entered South Senior with another grade which deprived you of being unique. Right at the outset, however, many of you began to make significant contributions to our school. In the analysis of our faculty you are a good class. We arrive at that designation by some mysterious technique. It really means that the faculty likes you!! Now you are about to embark on another stage of your life. You will begin to emerge as individuals who will be responsible for your actions and will deal with obligations that are different from those that you had as high school students. No one will be just like you; no one will have exactly the same experiences; no one will have exactly the same feelings; no one will have exactly the same thoughts; no one will have exactly the same dreams and hopes and expectations. In short, no one will be you. We, the faculty of South Senior High, hope that we have helped prepare you to face life as a responsible individual. We hope that you can face adversity with resilience, and success with humility. While you may leave our home physically, you do not leave our minds and our hearts. We hope you return to us often. We stand ready to help in the future if ever the need arises. The moment will hold different memories for each of us, as we recount what has happened over the past three years. The common experiences we shared, in the classrooms and on the playing fields, taught us different things. The most important lessons, however, were not those of biology and history; rather, the most valuable instructions were those of maturity, of relationships, of independence, and of learning about others and about ourselves. Today, we are not the same 276 kids who first entered this school as sophomores three years ago. In 276 different ways, we've become more responsible, able to take our place as adult citizens. In 276 different directions, we've explored our potentials, discovering our limits and how much further we can go. Come September, many of us will go on to college, while others will go directly into the real world of jobs, taxes, and bills. Yet, ten, twenty, thirty years from now, when we think back to high school days, the memories of the people who touched our lives here will remain fresh, long after the details of geometry and verb conjugation have been forgotten. Tomorrow, in our hearts, in our minds, and in the pages of this book, we will always hove a valuable, timeless piece of yesterday. Of course, today, in June 1982, it is a little too early to start feeling nostalgic about our years at South Senior. Most of us are now having mixed emotions - we re excited about starting a totally new experience in September, but we may regret having to leave friends and family to embark on this new life. Each June, when the new edition of VISTA appears, it's traditional for the graduating seniors to have their books signed by friends and favorite faculty members. It's difficult to encompass in a few simple sentences a relationship grown and nurtured through these three years, if not before. This page, therefore, is dedicated to those people to whom we may never get the chance to fully express our feelings. To the faculty: Although there have been some difficult times for students and teachers (particularly in the spring, when visions of beaches replaced those of molecular models), we have always known, and appreciated, that you were here to help, to free our minds and focus them on the world around us. Although we were often reluctant to admit It. we needed your guid- ance and support. When we walk out of this building for the last time, much more will be expected of us, and we, in turn, will expect more from ourselves and our world. Thank you for preparing us for those expectations. To our parents: Those days when you nagged, those nights when you sat up worrying, they were not in vain,- only now we realize that you were simply showing your care and your concern. High school was a difficult time for many of us, but with your patience, love, encouragement, trust and faith, we have overcome the problems, and we ore the better for it. What more can we say? Thank you for being by our side, today, yesterday, and tomorrow,- we can only hope that we con do as much for our children as you have done for us. To our friends: Yes, the times were great, but we always knew that, one day, they would have to come to an end. The togetherness, the secrets we shared, the laughter and the tears made these friendships the most valuable exper- iences of our high school years. While we will have bigger things to look forward to, it will be hard to find better friends than you who have made such a great impact on our lives. When we leave high school, we leave a part of ourselves behind in these halls - innocence, the thrill and pain of growing up. the freedom of childhood. But these friendships will always be carried forward, an integral part of us. At this time, think not of what might have been if graduation had not interfered. Think of what we were lucky to have, to share, to enjoy, and think of how to keep our friendships alive across the miles and across the months ā through the moil, through the phone lines, through our memories. 192 TO THE CLASS OF 1982 Dear Class: Tomorrow we will be pocking if all away. Broken pencils and rulers will find their way back to the shelves, faking with them dusty memories of the Class of '82. There is joy and anticipation at completing this book, as well as some sadness upon graduating high school. Through this book, we hope to have left you something tangible to recount the experiences and the friendships we have shared. For our classmates, we hope that we have captivated all of the years' events, as it has truly been three memorable years. As you look through the pages of this book, we hope that each picture will come alive, bringing a smile to your face, a warmth to your heart, and a stir to your memory. Before we finish, however, we would like to thank all of our editors. This book would not have been a success without your undying effort and creativity throughout those long weary evenings. We are especially indebted to: Stuart Angang: Thank you for your wit and charm. Without your ingenuity and moral support, VISTA '82 simply would not be. Steven Sanders: Your fine work throughout the entire senior section has made this book one to treasure. Thank you for your dedication and your willingness to work above and beyond your responsibilities. Barbara Galgano: Your smile was a constant inspiration throughout the year. Thank you for doing all work without hesitation. Bernice Yu: Thank you for sharing your artistic talent with VISTA. Robert Shallow: Thank you for your patience, support, but, above all, for your guidance and understanding. You are truly one of a kind, and both VISTA and South Senior are very fortunate to have you. Ann-Marie Lehman: Thank you for keeping us on target, and not allowing us to stray too far. Gilbert Blum: Thank you for all your cooperation and assistance. 1. Robert Tholer 2. John Ziovras 3.
