LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT. SO, ENJOY AND LIVE! Isn't it a pity, Isn't it a shame, How we break each other's hearts, and cause each other pain 5 Forgetting to give back isn't it a pity When not too many people can see we're all the same . • • And because of all their tears, Their eyes can't hope to see TABLE OF CONTENTS life .....................................1 faculty .................................20 fall ....................................43 winter ..................................92 spring .................................123 senior index ...........................152 acknowledgements .......................156 advertisements .........................157 boosters ...............................162 camera shy seniors .................... 164 parting shots ..........................166 Gilbert Blum, Principal It does not take a great deal of insight to ascertain that we live in a strife-torn world. In spite of the absence of declared wars, our planet is engaged in countless conflicts which bring heartache and death to innumerable individuals and families. You, as seniors at Great Neck South Senior High School, will now leave the sheltered atmo- sphere of public education and in some cases your parents' homes. How will you cope with this world? How will you change it? How have we helped to prepare you for what lies ahead? It has always been your parents and our aim to prepare you to answer the above questions in affirmative ways, but in the final analysis it is you alone who must make the decisions which will permit you to live happy and useful lives. People often ask how we can best prepare the young for a world which has such a large degree of distrust, hate and growing terror. Perhaps an oversimplification, but a sincere answer, is to help people to express love. If we could only measure each of our acts or each of our statements by ask- ing how will that act or that statement help another; if we could only look to help those less for- tunate than us, and if we could only find it in our hearts to learn to forgive and seek the strength that permits us to admit our own mistakes. The world perhaps would not see an immediate allevia- tion of the ills described above, but as individuals our lives would be immensely happier, healthier and more fulfilling. For you, our seniors, we wish the ability to light candles rather than curse the darkness. Our hopes for a better world lie with you. 20 SECRETARIES L. to R. R. Daigen H. Lowenthal R. Hamburger M. Then nothing Sister Mary can do Will keep me here with you As nothing in this life that I've been trying Can equal or surpass the Art of Dying. Do you believe me? There'll come a time when all your hopes are fading when things that seemed so very plain Become an awful pain Searching for the truth among the lying And answered when you've learned the Art of Dying. But if you want it — you must find it But when you have it — There'll be no need for it.
