After a slow start, the Hammerheads came up with a 2-0 victory over their cross-town rivals, South. Then, after a tough 1-0 loss to Island Trees things began to happen. The team went undefeated in the final eight games of the regular season. Victories over Roslyn and Island Trees clinched the Division III title for the Hammerheads. Then came the playoffs which saw North squared off against Garden City. Although North came out strongly and took the early territorial advantage, Garden City’s 2nd quarter fluke goal was enough to defeat North, 1-0. Although they were not to go any further than the second round of the playoffs this year, the team had nothing to be ashamed of. Here are the members of the team: The starters, goalie Doug Spector, Sweepers: Jeff Haar and Jim Citrin, Fullbacks: Rich Boyle, Kenny Rubinstein and Paul Sax, Halfbacks Howard Meiseles (all division), Eric Meyers (all-county), and Jim Silbergeld and Forwards: Charles Dillard, Alfred Geniets and Joel Aronstein. The substitutes: Lenox Arthur, Robert Bemthal, Gary Fishkin, Richard Frankel, Ronnie Gerber, Steve Okon, David Roggen, Neil Weiner, and Bobby Wanczowski. I've Got It Top Row L-R: L. Arthur, R. What A Time To Get Lockjaw 52 Competition No Match for Racqueteers The racqueteermen recorded their 51st win in a row and their third straight Nassau County championship with a victory over Hewlett. The depth of the squad is revealed by the fact that 11 out of their 14 players are ranked in the east including their manager, Janet Weinstein. Those who are not ranked, including steady, Joel Feller, could easily start on any other team in the county. This year’s initiated players include senior Mar- shall Bluth, junior Tony Fromer, and freshman Dean Ehren, all looking forward to receiving their Nassau County championship jackets. Warren Grossman, a new member of both the Great Neck team and Great Neck, combined with Stanley Ross for an undefeated year and were possibly the second best doubles team in the county, a close second to North’s All Divi- sion first doubles team of team captain Michael Samra and Mark Miller. This year’s singles were led by All County winners Jimmy Gurfein and Steve Spielman. Steve closed out his four years of varsity tennis with a sen- sational record of 64 wins and only 1 loss. Mike Einsidler and Scott Schwartz who played third and fourth singles respectively both won honors and were undefeated. It’s only appropriate to mention the part that coach Marty Bennett plays in making tennis, which is basically an individual contest, an interesting and exciting team effort. Standing L-R: M. By the end of the season the relentless joggers had compiled a pleasing record of 5-1, good for second place in their league. There were many high points to the season, especially the post season awards. North seized a plethora of awards; included were: all division titles for Chris Omeltchenko (3rd consecutive year), Doug Abeles, (2nd consecutive year), Marc Levinson and Ira Salzman. Along with his all division honors, Omeltchenko was awarded all North Shore and Country recognition and was North’s sole representative in the New York State contest. Combined with the efforts of Omeltchenko, Abeles, Lev- inson and Salzman were members such as juniors Evan Fox and Adam Shapiro and sophomore Chris Boree who amazed coach Peter Hugo with his fine finishes. Reviewing the past season, Hugo appeared to be more than satisfied. ”We had a successful season although we had higher expectations.” — Fans. . . What Would We Do Without Them? A Rebuilding Year for Blazers 63 And The Fan Roars! Team Shows Courage The 1976 Blazer football season was not coach Tom Casey's idea of a perfect season. It was a year where all vet- eran team members but 7 were lost due to graduation. Although North lacked experience and had a great deficiency in size, they did not relent tremendous determination, drive and hi£h attitude. Unfortunately, the two opposing factors were large enough to result in the Blazers winning no games in 8 attempts. The hard working offense was very tough to stop when hot. It was led by quarterbacks Howard Ebner, and Junior Ray Robin. The line was handled by Tyrone Johnson, David Birn- baum, Josh Levine, and Jim Hoey with help coming from Scott Fruchtman, Steve Kurash, and Mike Previto. Charlie Jenkins and Mike Upsher were fine backs, while Bruce Polat- nick played end. George McCullough, and Seth Mushkin teamed with Ed McGintee to hold up the Defense. The season was a great learning experience for all involved. With many regulars returning, the team is looking forward to a good season next year. 64 TopRowL-R: Coach J. Thomas. Coach D. Burden. W. Their impressive preseason wins discredited the scornful crit- ics and raised some eyebrows, but early divisional losses put the squad at a deficit. They fought hard, and though the vic- tories weren't abundant (3-9 record), the excitement sure was. Bad breaks and small mistakes resulted in slim losses, while the Blazers treated their fans to intense stretch runs and closely fought contests. Lou Weinberg suffered a midseason injury but returned to lead the team scoring. Marc Fant's toughness off the back- boards and Rich Boyle's hustling tenacious play held the defense together. The offensive patterns were run by point guard Eric Meyers with powerful help from Charles Dillard and Joel Aronstein. Back Row L-R: M. Upsher, R. Boyle, M. Fant. B. Glasser, P. Miller. A. Pergameni. Pinheads Reach Counti es With Time to Spare Although not looked upon as a top contending team, North’s bowling squad displayed some fine talent this winter concluding with an impressive season’s record of 24 wins and 18 losses. With the combined efforts of Dave Gutchen (170 average), Dave Tanzman (168 average), Steve Okon (164 average), and Jeff Haar and Alan Aboody (both averaging 162) the team finished fourth in the league. This gave them a shot in the North Shore Playoffs, where a fine display of determination and team spirit moved them on to the Nassau County Championship. Going in as a predicted underdog, the North Bowling Team spent an entire day fighting for a position in the county. They were not, however, able to penetrate the consistency of the powerful South Shore teams and finished in an unexpected and highly respectable eighteenth place. 71 Setters Win Division Title Undefeated . . . almost . . . 11-1 . . . Also, North finished second in its conference, and sec- ond in its division behind Island Trees. North wrestlers highlighted a successful season by beating Great Neck South in convincing style, 33-24 in a dual meet. Next, North went on to the Divisional where eleven of the team’s members placed. A first place was taken in the 108 pound weight class by Dan Raynor. George Wickboldt and Randall Remnek hooked seconds, and Andy Remnek, Mark Salzman, Mike Rosenfelder, Rich Einsidler and Alex Dannenberg placed thirds. Finally, fourth place positions were taken by Andy Green, Drew Fritzhand and Jim Hoey. The accomplishments of the 1976 North wrestlers shine brighter when one notes the youth of the team. Few squads would have expected such success from a team furnished with only five seniors. However, under the guidance of Long Island’s most colorful coach Ed Slater, North over- came its overall lack of experience. The five seniors on the team performed to their fullest, as each obtained an excellent win-loss record. Seniors Andy Remnek, Jon Klein, Jim Hoey, George Wickboldt and Dan Raynor all placed in this year’s Divisional Tournament and Raynor grasped fourth place in the North Shores. Perhaps more important than the results of this season, is the outlook for the future. Clearly. Great Neck North has built a solid base in wres- tling, and seasons coming should be even better than victories past. 74 75 Coach's Last Laps; Aquamen Break .500 Dennis Burden's coaching career recently came to a close and 12 years of hard work was capped off with a successful swim season. The pre-season goal of a .500 winning percentage was reached with an 8 and 7 record, taking hairline close meets from Uniondale and Wantagh. Junior Russ Berger stood out in the dual meet season and was rarely defeated in his specialty events, the Individual Medley and the 100-yard backstroke. He placed 5th in the I.M. at the year end New York State Qualifying Meet and took 9th in backstroke. Co-Captain with Berger was senior Jim Citrin, who was equally strong in the regular season, swimming the 200 and 100 yard freestyle events. In the qualifying meet, Citrin also swam the I.M. taking 11th place, and the 100 freestyle placing 14th in Nassau County. Senior Todd Noyes and sophomore Mike Levins teamed with Citrin and Berger to take 5th in the medley relay at the post season meet. Noyes and Levins were ifiajor contributors to the team's strength during the year, as were seniors Ron Lense and Debbi Narkun. Andy Valentine, Richard Sorkin, John Schwartz, David Kornblau, Marissa Martino, Anne Cosman, Andy Steckel, and Chris Constance, the members who added great depth, will all be eligible swimmers next season. Evan Fox, a new member, added the special touch of hard work, humor, and outstanding attitude that made the squad a team. The diving event was consistently the most powerful event for the Aquamen with June Preger, Steve Hayden, Lisa Gleeberman, and Scott Witt. North fared well at the end of the season as Hayden finished with an extra-ordinary first in Nassau County followed closely by Preger with her remarkable second place finish. Gleeberman and Witt placed 15th and 16th in the county, respectively. The swimmers look solid for next year, although a number of graduates will deplete the team. One diver and several swimmers will be leaving, but the one who will be most greatly missed is their beloved coach, Mr. Dennis Burden. 76 Gymnasts End Enjoyable season . . . The brutal weather often forced the Harriers to utilize the school's halls, severely limiting their training. Senior Chris Omeltchenko, one of the finest runners the school has produced, found the weather to his liking. Omo won the two-mile event in the Divisional Championships with a time of 9:41, a school record. He also finished third in the North Shores and fifth in the Counties to end an outstanding season. Doug Abeles, another distance runner, placed fourth in the divisional in the two mile run then teamed up with Chris Boree, Adam Shapiro, and Larry Unger to take second place in the two-mile relay. The sprinters, led by Lennox Arthur and Billy Lance also had a fine season. Lennox competed in the 300-yard dash and captured fifth place in the North Shores. Lance won medals in two races at the Nassau County Relays. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season turned out to be Marc Levinson. Levinson turned in a third place finish in the counties, in the one mile walk. His finish qualified him for the New York State Indoor Championships at Cornell. At Cor- nell, Levinson finished a very strong seventh. The best the entire squad could manage was a third place in the Divisionals. The Harriers, coached by Peter Hugo, were greatly helped by the contributions of Howard Ebner, Ira Salzman, Mark Clark, Lewis Love, Jeff Mazel, Billy Marks, and Mickey Maisel. The nucleus of long-distance runners led by the infatigable Chris Omeltchenko. Doug Abeles and Ira Salzman joined Chris and added depth to the strong mile and two mile events which compensated for weaknesses in some of the other areas. Charles Dillard demonstrated his versatility by leading the Hamers in the middle-distance events. Marc Levinson also did very well in the half mile race. In the hurdles it was Brad Shields and Ira Rosenblat who took care of most of the point scoring in both the 120’s and intermediates. Lennox Arthur did an outstanding job in the 440 yard dash and also scored well in the other sprints as well as some of the field events. Franklin Grahm also did a superb job in the sprints and jumping events. Alex Danenberg was tops in the pole vault doing surprisingly well in only his second year in this particular event. These individuals plus many others contributed to an excellent season and helped make the Harriers one of Norths stronger spring teams. 90 The wooden stove where our hats Were hung, r w rds were told oiir songs were su'hg', longedq re Jiow n y year h s assedjafridgone, WmS b P ha eea-'idst fed won' Ahd maEfy a road'talteBu mahjTair htk: And each one,I've never, seen again..: •' . Mr. Bennett is given the title of sponsor. Few who aren't involved in Arista realize how much credit he really deserves. Not only did he ease the tension with his witty jokes and consistent confidence, he guided us from the introduction to conclusion. All who work with him have developed a certain respect and closeness towards him. So much of his free time is spent working for Arista that it's hard to imagine how he has the time to be coach of the bowling and tennis teams, and always be available for help in physics. We hope you appreciate this yearbook as much as wc appreciate Mr. Bennett, (that's a helluva lot!) Sincerely. Vol. XLVI GREAT NECK NORTH June, 1977 The People Behind The Print barbara zalaznick and edward phillips This year’s GUIDE POST, led by editors-in-chief Barbara Zalaznick and Edward Phillips along with associ- ate editors Howard Cohen and Jon Klein, continued to uphold a forty-six year tradition of excellence in jour- nalism. The feature pages, edited by the verbose Bruce Ellerin, Dova Marder and associate Andrew Halpert, were improved through new graphics and the advent of a popular classified section. Reporter Halpert’s feature, ”As The School Turns,” delved into some of the more pertinent issues of school life including, pigeon droppings, the front hedge and the water fountains. Meanwhile on the spons page, three letterman Eric Meyers, and the frantic Shana Chung covered the athletic events, successfully squeezing in the most articles possible. They were assisted by senior field correspondents David Kountz, Steven Kuh and Bruce Polatnick. Juniors Michael Waldman, Karen Krinsley and associate Meredith Savitt perfected the art of muck-raking to fill the front page with newsworthy items. Art editor, Beth Scharfman graced the empty spaces with her rapidograph while ever dependable Daniel Wank and his sidekick Jordan Miller captured the year’s events with their cameras. The newspaper, however, could not long have stayed in the black without the hard work of the frugal business manager David Sorkin, the ad man, Eric Brandt and their mentor Mr. Wil- liam Reilly. To really understand the workings of GUIDE POST it is necessary to partici- pate in a paste-up. This process, by which the actual format of the paper is determined, is an extremely lengthy procedure. Much of the time, how- ever, is consumed by eating or decid- ing what to eat. Mr. Cobb prepares periodic after- noon snacks of hot cup-a-soup or warm cocoa. Dinner invariably consists of an appetizer of barbecued potato chips, followed by a main course of pizza pie, with M M’s for dessert. All this food, as well as Eric’s orange juice and Beth's no-cal soda, is dutifully deliv- ered by Anne Kamer. In the few remaining hours of true labor, a great deal of time is spent arguing over which page should use the ads. The feature staff usually yields to the sports staff after extensive arbitra- tion. barbara zalaznick. jane chamin, bcih scharfman and ronny gcrbcr 177 Page 2 GUIDE POST June, 1977 andy halpcn and bruce ellerin eric meyers michael waldman and meredilh savin Prejudice Rampant At North top row from left: dova marder, beth scharfman. eric meyers, karen krinslcy. michacl waldman. amy casscdy, david sorkin, eddie phillips. bruce ellerin, barbara zalaznick, howard cohen. bottom row from left: meredith savitt, cliff cobb, andy halpert, shana chung, jordan miller.
