ARISTA 1974 JOHN L MILLER- GREAT NECK NORTH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Great Neck, New York An architect watched as the weath- ervane was placed on top of the ivory white bell tower. The building was com- plete. The facade, the interior, everything had grown from his set of plans—blue- prints drawn with painstaking precision and judged by his own critical eye. Brick and mortar and glass now represented the once abstract idea of his creative mind. The architect stepped back and viewed his masterpiece. The making of a school had just begun. 3 4 5 9 10 The interior design of the school is what gives it life and color. Students, faculty and administrators arrange and rearrange the patterns within. Each year the atmosphere is altered to fit the needs and tastes of the ever-changing school community. A mood is created through 50's events, football games, stimulating classes, yawn-filled days, student acti- vism, club functions and just relaxing on the front lawn. But the uniqueness of North lies in the diversity of person- alities and the interaction between people. The architect's dream and the designer's goal have merged into one forming the Great Neck North that will be remembered. Miller-Great Neck North Senior High School Great Neck, New York Dear Friends: I wish that I had the opportunity to personally greet each and every one of you, but since I don't, I am speaking to you in this manner. It seems that the life of this Principal these days is a bit too complicated to make it possible to know each of over four hundred graduates well. However, I am pleased to know some of you through participation in various school activities and projects, others of you through problems that we've worked on together, and still others whose accomplishments I've heard and seen. It is my conviction that you can well be proud of yourselves and your class. Your accomplishments are far too numerous to mention here. I'm certain that each one of you has pleasant memories of high school that will last throughout your life. Of course, there are unpleasant thoughts too as few, if any, of us live in the society of Candide - the best of all possible worlds. Please be assured that you have the very best wishes from all of us who remain here after you leave. We hope sincerely that we've been success- ful in helping you along the way to becoming what you want to be, and that you've decided to want to become all of which you're capable. It is my strongest desire to have you leave us feeling positive about your future. You have my very best wishes for continued success. Mr. Tom Pierzga, the junior varsity coach for many years, replaced the loqua- cious AI Liquori. P has known most of his players throughout their high school careers. A revision of the leagues placed North in the toughest divi- sion, North Shore I. The Hammerheads were now pitted against such formi- dable opponents as Garden City, Farmingdale and Mineola. The preseason outlook appeared very dim. However, North crushed Syosset in their first game. The Hammerheads then lost their next two games, losing to Farmingdale and to a strong Garden City squad in over- time. Each time North met with either of these two teams, a tough contest resulted. The winner was always the team who received the most breaks. The regular season ended with North in second place, behind Garden City, with a record of 11-3-2. The first playoff game for North was in the second round. It took a Steve Chestler goal to secure this well-fought victory. The Hammerheads were then ready to take on the Clarke Rams in the North Shore semi-finals at Hof- stra. Clarke scored early in the first quarter. Steve Cohen then tied the score with an assist by Greg Fisher. Clarke scored again, leaving the halftime score 2-1, in their favor. For the rest of the game, the Hammerheads kept constant pressure on the Ram goal but were unable to score until the last period. This forced the game into the double overtime situation with Clarke coming out on top. Graduating, will be such strong offensive talents as Steve Cohen and co- capt. Billy Omeltchenko. Both ended the season with ten goals and received All Division and All County honors, respectively. At halfback, Ira Goldstein, Gerry Klein and Scott Asnis kept the team running with their tremendous hustle. Steve Rubenstein, Steve Chestler, and co-capt. Benjy Sax maintained the defense. Sax was named All North Shore. Goalie jeff Boudin played out- standingly, letting up only ten goals. Other seniors were Steve Hochman, Mark Sonkin, and Sandy Rosenstein. Although the team will be hurting from the loss of three players, next sea- son looks bright. Returning will be strong performers Greg Fisher, Danny Chestler, Rob Goldman, Rob Hertzberg and other capable juniors. After winning the divisional title, they were fortunate enough to advance to the finals of the North Shore playoffs. The majority of the team members were sophomores and juniors and they proved themselves to be quite outstanding tennis players. Sophomore, Peter Rennert, led the team as its strong- est member, playing first singles. Coach Martin Bennett sees an extremely formidable future for Peter. A close second to Rennert is Randy Hirschfield, who also com- pleted a season to be proud of. Sophomore, Scott Seeman, was the clutch member of the team this year at third singles, with Jimmy Bernstein filling the fourth singles spot. Through the season, the Netmen were given strong support by the doubles teams. At first doubles, the com- bination of Brian Moss and Blaine Greenberg resulted in much success. Coach Bennett used his imagination in changing the order and combinations of the second and third doubles pairs. Players David Reisfeld, Abbi Green- field, Paul Epstein, Howard Dorman, Paul Marks, Jeff Kaufman, Captain Gary Efronson as well as Freshmen Steve Spielman and Scott Schwartz alternated in the dou- bles catagories. With eleven players returning next year, all of whom have Varsity experience, the Netmen are assured of maintaining their supremacy in the future. Top Row: S. Seeman, M. Bennett, B. Greenberg, P. The team did manage a victory by one point over an incompetent Westbury group, yet this was of no so- lace for a wasted season that resulted in a final record of 1 win against 8 defeats. This record left most mem- bers of the team wondering aloud about what had happened. At times, they resembled a shell shocked army, unable to explain their misfortune. This was supposed to have been one of the better seasons in recent years at North. No runners from last year's squad had graduated and there were realistic and expectant hopes that this team would be able to make a strong showing against other schools. Unfortu- nately, this was not the case. Mr. Ring was obviously not too pleased with the team's performance. We broke all the bad records you can think of. It was one of the worst seasons I've ever lived through. 62 Kneeling (left to right): E. Harpaz,). Widell; ). Warach; standing: Coach Ring; R. Stapleton; C. Dehn; C. Auffray. FIELD HOCKEY Girls Field Hockey at North has always been successful and this year's team posed no problem in keeping up with tradition, the varsity record of 4-1-1 attests to this fact rather well. In addition, the 74 squad placed third in a round robin Sports Day held at Holy Child School in Old Westbury. This year's team has been called “ex- ceptionally good-a really cohesive squad, by Coach Mary Goess. In contrast to last year, the girls had more rigorous practices and much better attitudes to- wards the team. According to Captains Becky Harris and Laurie Lapsenson, this year's squad has been the best of their years of participation. The highlight of the season was the Westbury game in which junior Cynthia Forgays scored a penalty bully, winning the game for North. Overall, this year's squad proved to be very successful with an ex- ceptionally good line-up which should prove advantageous to next year's team. The team has put to- gether a series of plays which are basically simple, but which manage to help North pene- trate any defense. In addition, North's 3-2 de- fense line-up has managed to keep the opposi- tion from scoring in many instances. Moreover, Coach Bamberger demanded that all those wishing to try-out for the squad run one mile per day, five days a week for approximately five weeks prior to the opening of the season. The team has had many rigorous practices ex- ceeding in number any previous year. This year's team is a product of two years of hard work. Controlling guard and Captain Becky Harris had been one of the great main- stays of the Great Neck team. Helping her were two talented sophomre guards, Jackie Tager and Alison Bodian. Seniors Nancy Hament, JoAnne Lense (co-captain) and Lori Greene, were the three prominent forwards, while the center position was divided among juniors Julie Kramer, Sue Jaffe, and Sue Finkel. In essence, this years team is a fine example of what seemed to be lacking last year: team- work, spirit, diligence; and skill. THE SCOREBOARD GNN OPP 53 Friends 31 25 Roslyn 8 19 V.S. Of the ten Var- sity players, eight were returning veterans who added a great deal of experience to the squad. The two prominent aspects of this year's squad were experience and skill. With so many talented veterans, the team pulled it- self together to show expertise rarely seen in high school sports. The truth of the mat- ter is, that with the graduation of so many key seniors, the team may have a hard time reconstructing itself, but according to reli- able sources, the hopes for a super team next year do exist. Finally, a special tribute to the following seniors who made the squad so victorious: Ann Petrie, Nancy Hament, Jo Ann Lense, Becky Harris, Deb- bie White, Laurie Lapsenson, Jo Anne McCarthy and Danielle Haber. Coached by Dee Marvullo, the North Bad- minton squad consisted mainly of veterans from 1973, but the soph- omores that made the team turned out to be a definite asset. Ms. Marbullo described the team as, cooperative, willing to work, and attentive. In addition, she pre- dicts that next year's squad looks extremely promising because of the abundance of talented sophomores. At first, second, and third singles respectively, Debbie White, )udy Nisenbaum, and Dalia lasaitis hardly ever bowed to their opponents. Captain Laura Danutt and )o Ann McCarthy played first doubles. Beginning the season by beating three teams in a quadrangular match at North, the team kept on winning to finish the season undefeated and untied. This made them the most successful duel-match team in the coun- try, winning the Division III championship as well as the much tougher Cross-League B championship. Great Neck this year had twelve Division place-winners. Sophomore Paul Siegel and se- niors Ken Showboat Ginsburg (co-captain), and Jeff Bo Bo Boudin were Division cham- pions, as well as Bob Rage Jason and team MVP, Jon The Man Kessler (co-captain) who also placed third and fifth in the North Shore Tournament, respectively. Bobby Pacht placed second in the divisional, as well as Joel Epstein, Ray Beyond Belief Rieff and Gerry Red Klein who also placed second, third and fifth in the North Shores, respectively. Two third place Divisional winners, David Epstein and Gary Jen- kins, as well as Danny Tanenbaum, who placed fourth in the North Shores, show the devel- opment of depth on the Great Neck team. This depth is very important and has been sorely missed in years past. Early pre- dictions for the season were not ones of extreme optimism. Many top swimmers were lost due to graduation but with dedication and hard work, the end result proved quite successful. The team's final record was 9 wins and 5 loses in a season highlighted with victories over the tough teams of Syosset and Jericho. North faired well in the county championships as the medley relay team of Bill Gallon, Doug Goldhirsch, Peter Gregory, and John Scanlon placed fourth. Gregory, and Lynn each took a seventh in the breastroke with a time of 1:09.7 and the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.5 re- spectively. Gregory also captured eighth place in the butterfly while teammate Gallon placed ninth in his specialty, the backstroke. All three broke their personal records in their events. When the Nassau County playoffs arrived in February ev- ery member of the team was optimistic about their chances for success. With a season record of nine wins and three loses (2nd place in Div III) they ap- peared to be a strong North Shore contender. Fate struck North a deadly blow for the second time in two years, as history repeated itself, and North lost to Port Washington in the first round of the playoff by a margin of one point. Despair filled the hearts of the North fans with the realization that the Blazers had been eliminated and would not have a second chance in the playoffs, leaving only the memories of a rewarding season. In reviewing the season, the name Omo stands out. All-Long Island Billy Omeltchenko, called “Omo by his friends, led the team with a 25 point per game average. His brilliant play at guard and forward prompted Coach Morrison to compare him to none other than Bill Bradley. Billy was the second player in North's history to score over a thousand points in his varsity career. All-County Charlie Auffray was the quarterback of this year's squad, as he has been since his sophomore year. Often not receiving the credit he deserves, Charlie combined his keen ballhandling and passing ability along with fine shooting to bail out the team in several close games. North's team, lacking a big man , had to rely on the strong and aggressive playing of Victor Bush, Ben Sax, and Bob Curvitz throughout the sea- son. Steve Cohen provided the experience needed in the bacjcourt when things got hectic. Also, senior Bob Pavlin, and juniors Ronnie Evans, Peter Lewis, and Dave Meyers, made important contributions to the Blazer cause. Standing L to R: R. Gurvitz, B. Sax, B. Omeltchenko, V. Bush, R. The team ended the season with a respectable record that was ob- tained partly by the steady if not spectacular, bowling of Marty Polsky and Andy Kamer. But mostly by being awarded 11 points at the end of the season due to the disqualification of two teams in the league. Winter Track Winter track at Great Neck North has often been a topic to be ignored or ridiculed by the school. The size of the team (this year the squad was blessed with 11 runners) and their peculiar methods of training (sliding around on an ice cov- ered track in 10 degree weather) allowed people to question their sanity. A small poster that ap- peared in the school halls desperately pleaded “Wanted, Girl Manager for Winter Track . . . Please apply to Room 117 didn't do much for the reputation of the Winter Harriers. Despite these disadvantages, the small squad had a successful season. Although losing their first dual matches, the team finished in a blur by win- ning their last four meets. Although their record is a meager 1-1 North's squad has shown great improvement over former years, with returning veterans making up a good deal of the team. This season's first meet against Lawrence High School proved victorious for North with Margie Ornstein and Stacy Goleburn leading the teams, placing first on the beam, and the uneven parallel bars respectively. North's unsuccessful attempt to beat Calhoun High School was not lost by much, as Leora Cohen received a 3.75 on the uneven bars, placing second. Alexis Omeltchenko also helped to lessen the scoring gap as she placed second on both the beam and vaulting. Special mention is due to those graduating Se- niors who have been competing for three years: Leora Cohen, Ellen Lesser, Donna Schlessel, and JoAnn McCarthy. Thanks also go to Ms. Marvullo for having the patience for coaching a time-consuming sport and to Becky Harris, manager, for easing the burden of running the team. % GYMNASTICS Top Row: Stacy Goleburn, Jill Appleman, Ellen Lesser, Margie Ornston; Cathy Hecht, Lori Zelikow. A yearbook is the people and the ideas which make it different from every other yearbook ever published. Arista 1974 is no exception. Work on this year's Arista began early in 1974 when several people began to plan and layout the book which you are now reading. Throughout the year we worked to achieve a common goal—to make Arista 1974, not only a book of record with the scores of football games and the names of the officers of the clubs, but a memento of the many days we have all spend in this building and a yearbook which you will want to keep and read for many years to come. The production of a yearbook requires hours of work and a person who wants to be an editor just so he can list it on his college application is being unfair to the yearbook. Fortunately, there are few if any such people on the staff of Arista 1974. Most staff members, whether they had important titles or not, worked hard to make Arista 1974 a better yearbook. Several people deserve a special note for their help—Phil Schaefer and Gary Deane for the hundreds of photo- graphs which they took and Cindy Korman and Susan Ades for the time they spent helping to layout Arista 1974. I would also like to thank the many section editors who helped out long after the last page of their section had been mailed to the publisher. And last but nor least, thanks to the Business Staff of Arista 1973 for raising the money which made the many pages of color, which appear in this yearbook, possible. I hope the efforts of the people who were involved in the production of Arista 1974 were not in vain. It is extremely difficult to produce a yearbook that will please everybody. But we worked to create a yearbook which the entire school will be proud of, and I sincerely hope we succeeded. Moving away from just being a stepping stone to college, the CS encouraged students to utilize its many experimental opportunities. The resulting freedom from tests, grades and requirements re- sulted in a better school-wide understanding of the needs and desires of the school's members. Written evaluations enabled these individual to come to terms with his work, helping him realize the direc- tions he had chosen to follow and offering a chance for change. The availability of a larger faculty permitted stu- dents to originate a variety of classes, ranging from classical music listening to algebra, and from psy- chology to ceramics. The accredidation Board granted credit to students who could show that learning had taken place from outside sources such as Adult Ed., travel, or an independent study project that allowed serious exploration of new and inter- esting areas. Problems arose, large and small, the most out- standing being that of Frost Valley; it was an affair we will smile over when we remember how we cried over it. We learned many good things from Frost Valley—coping with problems and enjoying other people and their ideas. After months of forming committees to form committies and voting on whether or not to vote, the Wednesday meetings became fruitful. Positive action was taken on frost Valley and plans for next year were formulated. The CS is more than an experimental institution- it is a part of us that has helped us grow; an experi- ence that was different for each of us, but valuable for all 128 129 130 131 132 133 134 136 138 143 144 145 •A’ ' ■ -. ? -. .4 - :. fS t kf' .v afeite?.-', 3; «' v« A wa rv v b. .a : sgHra ■• 'V -5 . .' -fv H ■ : ' w'rfSwi. - , -v. , • -vw-.y- • •-■ jJmb. We began the year faced with the difficulties of a largely inexperienced staff and the necessity of raising the funds to make this ARISTA the biggest and the most colorful yearbook ever. However, through the highly coordinated efforts of Business Managers, Steve Cohen, Steve Axman, Jon Rubin and Barry Epstein and Assistant Manager, Donald Cohen, We were able to overcome these problems and make 1974 another banner year for ARISTA. We would like to give our sincere thanks to Mr. Leonard Mandel, sponsor of the Business Staff. Our success throughout the year was due to his guidance and contin- ued patience. 482-1511 Compliments of Stricoffs Bake Shop The Best Baked Products ' 482-9511 Lincoln — Mercury — Cougar BARON MOTORS 215 Northern Blvd. Great Neck, N.Y. 487-8500 See Baron's Boys f The Best Hamburgers in town Chop Meat Charles 9 Cutter Mill Rd.
