Farnsworth Superintendent ' s Message A high school annual dedicated to student life! No period in a lifetime will highlight as many pleasant memories as those years covered by this book — the four short years of work and play which are privileges of all those for- tunate enough to attend an American high school. The problems you have met as underclassmen, Juniors and Seniors offer a training program which has developed capable leaders and cooperative workers who rise to every emergency. Graduating Seniors will soon be in all parts of the world assum- ing responsibilities for which we hope your training here has partly prepared you. It is to you especially that we voice appreciation for the constructive things you have done for Great Falls High School, and extend best wishes for the time ahead. ROBERT B. FARNSWORTH I 12 ) k Mr. E. B. Cogswell Mr. V. F. Gibson Mrs. Frank Kerr Mr. R. B. Noble Confronted by unusually difficult school problems, the eight members of our board have proved themselves able and alert leaders by affecting a suc- cessful bond election in April, which will provide the funds necessary to rebuild schools, maintain repairs and keep teachers ' salaries adequate. It is through the efforts of these trustees that we have such excellent administrators, teachers and other school employees. Elected by the people, and serving without remun- eration, their position as mediators between public and school is one of impor- tant social consequence. Mr. R. H. Rebal Mr. J. F. Smith Mr. E. C. Steele Mr. Randall Swanberq ( 13 ) i Cyril H. Hancock Principal ' s Message The theme of this book, Student Life, represents more than the activities of the boys and girls in the Great Falls High School. It represents the realization of an ideal. In no other country do young men and young women have such unlimited opportunities for obtaining the benefits of education. In no other country are so many students attending the secondary schools, nor has any other country invested so much in the education of its youth. The student life of a typical American high school represents the realization of that distinctly democratic philosophy that education is for all boys and girls, and that to each should be given the privilege of attaining as much as his or her ability and ambition permits. May the young men and women pictured here continue to protect and defend our heritage of fre edom, and in the critical days that lie ahead may our investment in the education of our youth prove to be as it has in the past — our most valuable asset. Congratulations to the Class of 1948 and to the Roundup Staff for produc- ing this excellent record of student life. CYRIL H. Principal HANCOCK ( 14 l Would you please help me outline a course that will give me the requirements need- ed to enter a good college? Er-r-r . . . my mother forgot to write an excuse for my three days ' absence, so could I please have a pink slip? These queries and many, many others are fired at Mr. Anderson during the course of a normal day. He is in charge of student personnel which includes registration, educa- tional guidance, discipline, attendance, testing and recommendations for college admissions and scholarships. A great deal of credit is cer- tainly deserved by this very capable and effi- cient administrator. Edmund T. Anderson Vice-Principal Sympathy, encouragement and a guiding • hand are all part of Miss Murchie ' s valuable aid as dean, which, along with her efficient manner, sensitive insight both as Dean of Wo- men and as mathematics instructor, give her the prestige of being known and respected by all. Mon- (63) lad Will xmd VeAhmmi We the Senior Class, being of sound mind and broken body do on this dav the first of June, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and forty-eight hereby bequeath and denote the following priceless treasures to some not altogether deserving personages: Cathy Clapp wills to her sister Martha her perfection of the sitz-mark. _ Stan Fitzpatrick bequeaths his potential brain power to Miss Thompson s future classes. To Joyce Siperly goes Chuck Gilmore s southern drawl. Mary Alyce Hughes leaves Bill (to the highest bidder.) Loretta Logsdon leaves her horse laugh to any nightmare that wants it. Jack Smith leaves his appetite to Dale Morton. George Taylor leaves Moe ' s bottles empty. Dave Thomas leaves Stan Cowan to Mrs. Phelan. Jack Jordan leaves his ability to speak Italian to Tony Marino. Joe McArthur leaves his diploma to Jerry Keenan. .__,., Marion Sletten leaves her beautiful golden tresses to Mr. Sticht. Jack (Durante) Peden leaves his economy size nose to Dick Rebal. Janie Radigan wills her plaid glasses to the bats in the school belfry. Joe Marino wills his presidential votes to Henry Wallace. Carley Heule wills her dashing steed, Tony, to anyone who can catch him. Robin McPhail wills her long, shimmering locks to Sparkle Plenty. Bill Banta and Bob Murray respectively will each other that which the party of the first part needs most and the party of the second part needs least. Evelyn Parsons leaves her figure to Sharlie Shane. Jackie Pettyjohn leaves her good natured disposition to Tommy Straham. Dave Wahlburg leaves his melting glances to Bossy and all other con- tented cows. Draper Hurd leaves his debate cards to Brown Chase. Dale Kranz surrenders the whistle on his car to all underclassmen to use at their discretion. , Louise Pauls bestows her forgiving nature upon next year s Roundup editor (and to all those whom her staff members have insulted.) Last but not least, Denise Zunchich leaves her clothes and goes home in a Class President. I 64 QlaM P fmeaj, HUR-ry, HUR-ry, HUR-ry! Step right up to gaze on events ten years hence. Take a look in the future with Madame LaZora. She knows nothing, sees noth- ing, tells everything. Hush! The crystal ball is clearing. What is this? Look deep in the crystal ball, for there you see . . . Jack Peden still playing reserve football and basketball under Loren Perry, head coach. Howard Farley digging up stale jokes and telling them to Jeannette Sim- mons, who is scrubbing floors in the capitol building. Gloria Cocales throwing down autographed copies of her great novel from the top of the First National Bank building. Jack Jordan, who is selling pencils on Central avenue, has collected seven of the books already. Marshall Annau playing tiddely-winks with man-hole covers with the trained elephants of Dede Brick and Joanne McGinnis. Gretchen Weinsheim modeling pajamas with Sue, Ellen and Janie. Harold Treweek of the F. B. I. is watching these undercover activities. Dorothy Helgeson, president of the Old Maid ' s Society, polishing fellow member, Ruth Gebhardt ' s, horn rimmed glasses. Myra Sheldon is still counting trees in Missoula ' s 20,000-acre experimental forest. Bob Rothweiler, who is also in the forest, is looking for lonely little petunias. Larry Enloe driving Draper Hurd out of business by delivering babies to members of the class of ' 48 at half price. Norma Strickfaden, to the dismay of both, is raising little test tubes. Jack McHenry and Sally Chambliss living in a mud hut in Mongolia. Bob Farnsworth, in Siberia, watering his pineapples with Pepsi Cola. Dave Kunz beach-combing in Australia, Evelyn Weissman cruising in a canoe on the Amazon, and Bill Wilkinson hunting tigers in darkest Africa. Bob Murray treating his patients, Carley Heule (who is meditating on life ' s evils in a padded cell) and Pat Moran (annoying other doctors.) Marie Allred is trying to crash the gates. Ed Alf, leaving earth headed for Mars, after witnessing Bill Browning ' s production of Orson Welles ' Mercury Theatre. Dave Wahlberg accepting a high paying job with the all-girl orchestra after having been thrown out of the Philharmonic by Joe Marino. The reason: Flirting with Kay Kraber on concert tour. Harold Uecker playing at the Royal Hawaiian hotel in Honolulu. Don Espelin still trying to climb trees with his Ford, while Shiny Knight is teaching Dick how to knock them down. Nancy Calvert chasing Howie, who is trying to follow Jack Osweiler ' s example of being a happy bachelor. Glen Pipes working for the WPA under Foreman John HalL Ted (rags to riches) Coronzos has made his million while Dave Thomas is still eking out a meager existence of $25,000 a year. Jo McMaken searching for Chloe up the swamps, while Pat Freeman is just searching. The crystal ball is fading. However, we can still make out one figure. Oh, oh! That teacher is in the basement again. Miss Erickson, Mr. Koen Emerging from a tangle of theorems, Cicero and Emerson ' s essays, the Junior class stands ready to take the final plunge to the threshold of Senior- hood. This prospect seems pretty exciting now, but next year when he thinks back over the Junior Prom, class assembly and Roundup Day parade of ' 48, he ' ll look at the lowly Freshman with envy, wishing that he, too, could start from the beginning — as a Junior. Undauntedly the coaching staff and the green team stepped into their chores and turned a doubtful task into a glorious season. With the falling leaves in September the blue crew started dropping their opponents with the 48-0 conquest over the invading Sheridan Broncs of Wyoming in a non-conference tilt on September 13. The following Saturday night the Memorial lights turned on for the classic between the high-spirited Blue Bison and the Everett, Washing- ton eleven. The Seagulls boasted a 200 pound line and a crafty backfield that was a coach ' s dream. Going into the fray as underdogs the smashing club of the Electric City looked very much outclassed as the half ended with the two-gun assault of the Everett squad neatly scoring 21 points to the lone 6 of the smaller Bisons. The second half showed the true fightin Bisons as the boys in blue came back strong and ended the game only one point from victory. Despite the loss the game was a complete moral victory in the hearts of the local fans. The score? 26-27. On the next week ' s menu the Butte Bulldogs handed the G. F. aggregation a 7-0 defeat on the treacherous Naranche stadium at Butte. Playing in mud, the game was tied until a desperation pass scored the touchdown in the fourth quarter. On the next three week ends the local boys blasted Helena, 6-2; Havre, 32-13, and Anaconda, 28-13, showing they were working diligently for the com- ing Missoula fray. BEAT MISSOULA— BEAT MISSOULA was the chant carried by squad members, student body and fans of the highly improved Bisons. On October 25 on Dornblaser field at the Garden City the polished team did BEAT MIS- SOULA for the first time in seven years. By winning this game the season could be classed as entirely successful, were the words issued by Coach Bill Swcrrthout at the end of the gridiron warfare. Tied for second place with the Billings Broncs, the Bison returned to their own camp in preparation for the winner take all game with the Broncs on a crisp November eve- ning. This game decided the team to meet Butte on Turkey day. The crew lowered their heads, stamped their feet and went into practice with the vim and vigor of true athletes in their days before the big game. When the fresh Broncs ar- rived the lads from the GFHS campus were keyed as highly as possible for the tilt. The first half showed the Bisons lead- ing the way 13-12 before a capacity crowd. The second half was an entirely different story as the speedy tribe from Bil- lings romped across pay dirt twice to make the final out- come 25-13. Out of the championship race they met the Kalispell Braves for the last home game of 18 Bison Seniors. This game was a roll over for the lads who were now playing the game for fun alone. The finale was played in a blizzard and the points came as fast as the snow and at the end the scoreboard read Great Falls 66, Kalispell 0. Traveling 526 miles to engage the Casper, Wyoming, eleven, the Bison travelers thoroughly trounced and bounced a tough team that ended as Wyoming champions. The last game was the best game for the warriors of Great Falls. The final tally was 20-6. With the suits being hung up until 1948, also the fine record of 7 wins and 3 losses was recorded for the boys â– who carried the Blue and White across the gridirons at home and abroad . . . AMEN. With a small but mighty herd to work with, Coach Swarthout started the glorious season with the dumping of Hamilton 48-34 on the crisp eve of December 13. With the fast break being employed, the thin clad lads took to the new system like ducks to water, and displayed a smooth pass- ing attack and accuracy at the nets that kept the local gym packed to capacity on every occasion. The crafty crew took on Glasgow by a decisive 39-30 victory for the first conference tilt of the docket. In the Christmas holidays the Bison ten went to invitational tourneys at Helena and Havre. Copping third in Helena the team then went north and tied for first with the Missoula quint. Missoula beat the battling Bisons 56-54 for the glory laurels that were shared by both quints. In early January the herd went through the canyon to nearby Helena, only to be handed a heartbreaking loss, 40-42. The follow- ing night the tired team were squelched by the powerful Broncs of Billings — 37 for the Blue and 47 for the Broncs. The next week spelled disaster for the journeying Bison outfit. Havre barely squeezed into the win column with a 40-41 conquest m an overtime. Going up the high line the Glasgow Scotties had revenge on the traveling ten with a 38-36 upset. Returning to the Bison stables the smited Bisons meant business and settled down for the remainder of the year. FULL SPEED AHEAD was the motto of the quintet as they knocked over the favorites in their beating Helena 53-44. This game had fans trembling in the entire gymnasium because of the lead changing hands many times before the buzzer sounded. Easily battering the lowly Lewistown Eagles the next night, 60-32, the club prepared for their journey to the fertile country the following week end. Flogging the Kalispell five by 26 markers the scrappy blue crew sailed into Missoula only to be handed a 58-64 loss by the defending champs. This was any- body ' s ball game for it was the fastest one seen in Montana basket- ball circles for many terms. Ted Coronzos — Forward ( 106) Ya got it, now keep it Basketball Tom Campbell — Forward The devotees of the local aggregation were on hand by the hundreds to witness the lighting Bisons quell the Spartans on Fri- day the 13th of February, by a 56-50 margin. This game sold the twinklin ' ten to followers and the nert P. M. brought another treat as the G. F. lads smashed the Anaconda cagers 53-43. Aboard the bus the blitzing Bisons -went to the country where the miners dwell only to be cuifed by the Eutte hands. Despite the score the Bisons played the best half of ball for the year by scoring 40 tallies. Cling- ing to an early lead the Bulldogs came out on top 63-57. Foaming with rage the crew went over the hill to Anaconda and were thor- oughly mopped by the Anodes. The miraculous net busters of Ana- conda scored 73 points to 45 tossed through by the stunned Bisons. Neanng tournament time the blue Bisons set their noses to the hardwoods and crumpled the invading Euttesters the next week end 62-53. Then with an overcast covering Great Falls, the snarling herd completely overcast the Kalispell Braves 64-45 on February 28. The last journey to foreign courts in conference play took the local twine- twisters to Lewistown and Billings. Ripping the Eagles apart in the fourth quarter the Bisons emerged victors with a 44-35 win. The next night proved fatal for the Bisons. Billings was too hot to cope with, and took the final conference fray 53-39. HaVre now or nev«r could have been appropnate, as the Bisons traveled to Havre with blood in then- eyes for the Northern Divisional tournament. Easily beating Kalispell in the first round, the blistering Bisons were too cold to handle the cagey cagers from Missoula, and came out on the short end of a 50-33 score. The next victim to fall by the way of the Bisons was the host team, Havre, by a 60-39 score. Beating the Helena Bengals the next evening sen: the Bison outfit to Missoula for the state tournament with a third place divisional tourney honor tucked neatly away. Helena 47, Great Falls 50. Having tough breaks the Bisons went gamely into the state tournament despite the loss of a key player. Drawing the orange and black clad lads from Billings the first night, the broken-hearted Bisons lost championship chances by one point. The score was 50-49. Meeting Butte and easily whipping them the tired Bison herd then met Butte Central for the last game of the 47- ' 48 season. Burte Cen- tral were coy with their concus- sion crew and took the game by ten points. Undoubtedly the mighty Bi- sons had a successful season with games that were exciting , fast and which displayed true G.F.H.S. fighting spirit. Placing the Keds back on the shelves until next year the books have one more proud record of 19 wins in 32 starts for the Bison athletes. Eob Yurko — Forward Gene Carlson — Guard 107) A dark hole!
