FARNSWORTH Superintenclenfs Message Any attempt to picture the west can not overlook the sterling qualities of those who pioneered the settling of this area and fought to establish homes cmd other basic institutions of American life. History has clothed most of the early days of Indians, trappers, prospectors, and drifting cattlemen with a romantic haze which often overshadows those who contributed most to permanency. Montana has as many of these historic characters to weave its story around as any western state, but following closely on their heels came cattle- rnen to make pioneer homes and ranchers who fought through years of drought. Miners and oilmen came to establish payrolls. The tenacity and hopefulness of these men and women are qualities we must maintain to finish the work which they started. One form of pioneering is finished, but others remain. The great improve- ment needed in our public education program, improvement and economies in government, reclamation of land for permanent homes, the building of better and cleaner cities are fields which need the efforts of tireless, well-trained young people with vision enough to build to fit the foundation prepared by those men and women who first called Montana home. ROBERT B. FARNSWORTH Superintendent l ik l CYRIL H. HANCOCK Message for 1947 Roundup To most graduates of the Great Falls High School the Roundup is one of their most cherished possessions. It presents a record of student life of which they were an integral part. Cherished memories of friends and situations are preserved between its covers. The class play, the football games, the Iunior Prom, the library, the advisory period, and many other events are vividly re- called as the graduate thumbs through its glossy pages. And so the book be- comes a personal thingy an old friend that is itself emblematical of friendship. When we attempt to evaluate the things that make life worth while, such intangibles as friendship, loyalty, integrity, and faith in the inherent goodness of man usually stand high in the scale of relative values. This book, in part, preserves for us some of the things which were good in our student life. Its western theme recalls for us the virtues of the past. May the Class of 1947 take its lesson from the time-tested values of the past and apply them to the present. There is no greater reward in life than the realization that a job has been well done, that there are no regrets for our actions in the past, and that we can CYRIL H. HANCOCK, Principal face the future with hope and confidence. clmool Boar A The School Board, composed of the above rnavericks, has the tough job of handling the various educational ranches throughout the entire city. Bull- dogging such problems as raising the tax levy ot the community, benefiting teachers with salary increases, and tangling with the state on problems ot educating Montana's dogies, comprise the duties of the bosses Elected by the city, the Board is one of the hardest working groups in the state in the advance- ment of education. ANDERSON Vice-Principal Miss Murchie exerts a good deal of influence, not with a big stick or a six-shooter, but by using her common sense and understanding to help the gals who turn to her for advice and by teaching boys and girls in her numerous math classes. All greatly appreciate the loyalty and wisdom and her guidance at this camping ground. 167 Mr. Anderson is the square-shooting foreman around this G. F. Ranch who rounds up the strays and advises the guys and gals as to their courses and grades. For those planning to go on with their education, he gets in touch with the top hands of other establishments and makes the necessary arrangements. A woman's only place is in the home is an outdated idea, as these girls taking office practice well know, for they are learning ottice techniques which will help them in the business world after graduation. Since this is the machine age, that aspect of learning is not neglected and in the machine shop, boys learn how to make, repair and put together different parts of machinery, thus gaining practical experience. The study hall, largest class room in the school, is a place Where students may read or do their homework, also they can make up tests and back work during this period. F. H. S. outfit and now after four busy years they're ready to move on to new pastures. During their first year they got right into the swing of things by cementing and painting the G. F. on Hill 57. The high-light of their second year was the Sophomore party and few will ever forget the dynamic Iunior Prom and Senior Ball put on by the 47'ers. The Senior wranglers really turned out for football and basketball and helped make 1947 one of the most success- ful years ever experienced in sports. The Top cowhands have made many outstanding con- tributions in drama, debate, and scholastics. Not just a few but ALL were partners in making the Class of '47 one of the most outstanding to ever graduate from Great Falls High School. With a large, powerful line and a fast, hard hitting backfield, the Great Falls Bisons were the power team of the year. The season started in Sheridan where two big teams fought to a grueling U to O tie in a warm autumn evening on the twenty-first day in September. The Bisons downed a determined but outclassed Havre team by a score of 20 to 6. The following week the Bisons fought a fast but heavily outweighed Billings team 27 to 7. The Bengals of Helena were the next victims to the Steamroller of Great Falls and Went home on the short end of a score 20 to O. The next gridiron battle was played in the Anaconda stadium where the Bisons won a thrilling victory from the Copperheads by a score of 13 to 7. The only setback in the Big 6 playing for the local gridsters was a 9 to O triumph for the Missoula Spartans. Determined to not let this happen again, the Bisons showed amazing speed and power in defeating the Billings eleven again by a score of 14 to O. Football BOB ROTHWEILER Oct. 18 Great BILL WARDINSKY Qctl 26 Great Nov. 2 Great Nov. 8 Great Nov. 28 Great HOWARD VAN NOY The Bisons again played host to the team from Everett, Washington and proved themselves Worthy of the victory they gained over one of Washington's best teams by the score of 13 to 6. Entering the final game of the season as the underdog in an all important game with the Butte Bulldogs, the Bisons hammered out a hard earned 3 to O victory over the Bulldogs. On Thanksgiving Day the Bisons toured to Missoula in the crucial game to decide the state championship. On a misty, cold afternoon, the faithful followers of the Great Falls foot- ball team saw the valiant locals fall before the tricky Missoula Spartans again by a score of 13 to 0. This year was a heartbreak for the faithful fans of Great Falls who saw the Bisons fight an uphill battle all the way only to fall before the powerful Spartans. Rebounding from several disastrous defeats from the Butte city teams, when our team suffered two defeats, Great Falls got back on the winning path by defeating Lewistown 48 to 22 and Kalispell 43 to 34. Then, onto the hardwoods of Great Falls came the ancient rivals from Missoula that began a feud ended in the championship game a month and a half later. The Bisons took the lead by defeating the Spartans 37 to 35. Revenging the defeat of the Bulldogs from Butte earlier in the season, the Great Falls basketeers compiled a score of 45 to Butte's 33. Great Falls fell before the Copper- heads of Anaconda and Havre Ponies, but again downed the Fergus team of Lewistown. With blood in their eyes the Billings team overcame Great Falls to even the score for the Big 16 conference, Great Falls completed their revenge on the Butte team by downing the fast Butte Central boys 48 to 39. With the Big 16 season nearing its end, the Great Falls boys gathered in two more victories from the ever-dangerous Anaconda and Helena teams. The final game was played on the Missoula floor where the locals lost a heart-breaker to the powerful 'Spartans ln the Northern Divisional tournament, the Bisons defeated Helena 41 to 38 and Butte Central 41 to 32 by some hard playing. ln the play off, the Missoula Spartans again edged off the Bisons in a close game leaving Great Falls in possession of second place.
