They adopted the Student Activity Cards and a joint resolution with Hoisington High School. The student activity cards covered all pay assemblies, plays, home games, operetta, and the Panther Tales. Proof that the Stuco cards were a success is shown by the sale of them to 2470 of the sophomores, 2970 of the juniors, and 3970 of the seniors. The joint resolution with Hoisington was adopted during the first semester to promote better relationships between the neighboring schools. The G. B. H. S. chapter plans a Roman ban- quet each year. They also keep a scrapbook of classical material which is displayed at the state convention. - Another club project is the publishing of Nuntius Romanus , the JCL newspaper. Copies of this paper are sent to the various other JCL Chapters in the state. Because . JCL is a national organization, it is bound in its interests with other clubs. In March the members and officers attended the Kansas State Convention in Wyandotte, Kan- sas. There each chapter presented a program in relation to the twelve labors of Hercules. Exchange concerts and spring festivals have headed the activities for the vocal music depart- ment during 1955-56. In November the choir journeyed to McPherson for an exchange perfor- mance, and in March they performed in Newton. At the spring festival in Hutchinson G. B. H. S. entered solos and ensembles and received high ratings. The purple robed choir presented the annual Thanksgiving concert which was enjoyed by the entire student body. Much work and imagination went into this entertaining concert. The story revolves around Dr. Falke, Mr. Stein, Rosiland, and Adele. These lead roles were portrayed by Jerry Boyle, Gary Sneathen, Wanda Clymer, Donna Myers, and Arnita Otte. Although main cast members work- ed long and hard, the chorus is not to be forgotten. Miss Tubbs worked with a group of over two hundred and their performances were all well-organized. Dave Felton Dark Wind by Evelyn Nevenberg was presented before the Student body Friday, October 21. The sophomores spent many hours of hard work rehears- ing and preparing for the most outstanding one-act play of the year. One of the best features of the play was the special sound effects depicting a strong wind at sea, This realistic effect added to the drama of a story which revolved around a hospital ship at sea which faced the danger of storm in an area where floating mines made every moment afloat a nightmare. The characters were well portrayed by talented sophomores who held the audience in suspense from the beginning of Student Director Doris Dreh1e's intro- duction to the final scene in which peace and hope is restored to two of the army nurses, After the presentation of each one-act play, judges rated them. The sophomores were rewarded for their outstanding play as it was chosen to represent Great Bend High School in the WCKL Forensic Meet March 6 A vote of thanks is due to the members of the cast and crew from the entire student body of G, B,l-I, S. The Benders' power didn't slacken in the last half and the Panthers went on to victory. Capturing of fourth place in the regional tournament on the home court was another high point of the season. Varsity players took their first game from Garden City 59-42, but in the second encounter were downed by the Hutchinson Salt Hawks and in the playoff for third place lost to Dodge City 62-53. Suiting up for their last game at G, B, H, S, were three seniors: Terry Know- les, Charles Steinbacher and Harry Eckert. The outlook for the future Panthers squad is very promising after looking at the 12 win and 2 loss record of the Freshmen, The Dodge City Demons were crowned the new WCKL champs as they ended a successful season with a 9-1 record, being downed only by the Pratt Green- backs, Pratt was runner-up with a 7-3 count. Great Bend's Black Panthers and the Russell Broncos tied for third place honors with a 6-4 record. Hays, last year's champions, won only two league games in holding down fifth place. Made up mostly of juniors, the Great Bend track team came through with an agressive sea son by placing 5th in the state meet. They also showed a startling amount of power at the KU Relays where they placed 7th, Jerry Boyle, Larry Schrnutz and Jerry Schmutz were promising return men as they were outstanding in the 440, high jump, pole vault, hurdles, and broad jump. BURNESMEN HAVE VlC'l'0Rl0lIS SEASIIN Coach A1 Burns and his 1955 baseball team brought the state title to Great Bend following a 10-4 victory over the Dodge City Demons in the state finals. Dodge had pre- viously beaten the Panthers 3-2 when they won the Regional Tournament at Great Bend, The Panthers entered the tournament as TEAM RECORD the considerable under-dog. Wichita North Gi-eat Bend 10 Odin and Great Bend were scheduled to meet in 15 Chase the tourney opener but rain postponed the 3 Dodge game one day. Terry Leek pitched the 6 Victoria Panthers to a 5-2. victory over North the 10 Offei-1e following day. Bob Durheim collected two 7 Dodge timely hits during the game. Larry Markel 4 Wichita led GB to a 4-1 victory over Wyandotte in 1 Rose 1-1i11 the semi-finals and in the final game against Regionaie 5 Victoria Dodge City, Coach Burns called Terry Leek 2 Dodge to the mound. The score was deadlocked in State 5 Wichita the sixth inning, but the hard-hitting Panthers 4 Wyandotte rallied for 8 runs in the top of the seventh to 10 Dodge City win the game and claim the state title, Terry Knowles, outfielder, is shown as he is forced out at home in a game with Wichita. Knowles was a mainstay in the Panther outfield, holding down rightfield besides seeing action behind the plate. SET SIGIITS Fllll TITLE IN '56 The Black Panther hopes for retaining their state championship ride on 8 re- turning lettermen. The team, headed by Terry Leek on the mound, should have a solid in- field. Gaylen Sullivan, first baseman, was a regular on the '55 squad. With Bill Smith and Jack Curtis in the key- . stone position, Terry Knowles in the outfield and as catcher, and Harry Eckert and Harold Langreher also play- ing outfield, the '56 team should be able to meet the strong competition. Newton has been added to the Panther schedule. 'Q ..-.-.Quan--- H ,,,,,,,,,t C O alm- 05 t, ,l s Jerry Emerson blocks homeplate as he tags out a Wichita base-nmner during a tight game.
