Colegrove, secretaryg H. P. Thies, chairman: D. V. Swartz. Superintendent of Schools: Mrs. Hugh Jencksg Harry Lytlep and Louis Zutavern. Edward Opie, treasurer, is not pictured. Swartz in his first year as superintendent of public schools has encountered many problems such as the making of the budget and expenditures and the hiring of teachers and other employees. 'sv The teachers of Great Bend High School are always ready to lend a help- ing hand to any student who needs help They are active not only in their class- rooms but they also supervise organi- zations and club projects. The School Board has often been kept at board meetings until very late at night working on school business. They formulate the plans and policies of the public schools. The custodians are at work at seven o'clock each day and a night custodian stays until midnight. The cafeteria workers serve three hundred students and teachers in the cafeteria every day. S i C t 4 . D. V. SWARTZ, Superintendent of Schools, thinks the L. M. HOLMAN is so busy being vice-principal, only hobby is hunting and fishing. This is Mr. Swartz's year in Great Bend. M. A. University of Colorado. R. E. GUNN likes to shed his Principal's job and worries with his wood working hobby. Mr. Gunn's job as the high school principal includes running the school. supervising the cafeteria, and many more time taking tasks. M. S. Kansas State College. first commerce instructor and Student Council advisor that he doesn't have much time for a hobby. but at home he has a standing occupation of baby sitting. M. S. KSTC. Has anyone seen a lady ilitting through the halls with a thermometer in one hand and a watch in the other? If he has, he caught MISS FLORENCE MIESTER in one of her trips to the schools as head nurse. Miss Miester likes to read in her spare time. R. N. St. Rose Hospital. Need any money today? is the cry of L. Miss Riddle is the principals' secretary. She likes to collect any type of record. HANNAH F. SCHENKEL runs the filing cabinet in D. V. Swartz's office. Mrs. Schenkel likes to work in her ffl' alt EDA ALLIS, English teacher, helps direct assembly plays and is assistant FHA sponsor. Miss Allis enjoys refinishing woodwork as a hobby. She is a graduate of Baker University and has attended Colorado State. A. B., Baker University. If you need your car repaired or a fish for dinner, JOHN F. AMES is your man. Mr. Ames. an Emporia State graduate, teaches commerce and helps sponsor the junior class. B. S.. KSTC, Emporia, Kansas. LOUIS BANKER'S red vest and striped tie have become as familiar a sight at the pep rallies at GBHS as they were during his cheer-leading days at the University of California. Mr. Banker teaches Constitution, world history and coaches debate. A. B. , University of California. RICHARD BERGEN supervises art in the high school and elementary schools of Great Bend. Mr. Bergen likes to hunt and fish. B. F. A.. Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas. auch? nfo When ALLEN BURNS isn't teaching biology or coaching baseball, he is found in his garden, He claims Kansas State as his alma mater, M,S,, KSTC, Emporia, Kansas. If a student has troubles, he takes them to student councilor HENRY R. COBB, Mr, Cobb teaches government and takes an active interest in home improvement. M. S., KSTC, Emporia, Kansas. MRS, LUCIA COUCH is at home in her job as librarian as her hobby ls reading. She has three colleges to her credit: Tulsa University, Iowa University, B.A. , Emporia, Kansas. CECIL DRYER, a graduate of Fort Hays, teaches American History and ls the assistant football coach, He likes to hunt, fish, and read. B,S. , University of Wlchitag M. S. Fort Hays. ROBERT EDMAN believes in working at what he enjoys He is the boy's physical education and swimming instructor and his hobby is sports. B. S. , University of Kansas. S. , Kansas State College. CARL HEINRICH is a farmer all the way around. He not only teaches vocational agriculture, he is the sponsor of Future Farmers of America and his hobby is farming. B. B. , Sterling Collegeg University of Chicago. An ex-olympic basketball player, JOHN KELLER, is the man who shapes our varsity basketball team. Mr. Keller is the drivers' education instructor also. He likes hunting. fishing and any sport. B. S. , Kansas University. Football coach HARRY KLINE is evidently the masculine type. When he isn't stuffing students' brains with mechanical drawing, sociology, and psychology, he is out in the woods with a gun and a pole. B. S. . KSTC. Emporia, Kansas. If MALINE LUNDSTEDT, commerce instructor, dec- ides to have a tea party, she will have all the facilities at hand as her hobby is collecting china cups and saucers. She is also the Kayette sponsor and the senior class sponsor. B. His directing ability is on public display twice a year in the junior and senior 3-act plays. A. B., Southwestern College, Winfield. Kansas. ROGER MARSH, mathematics instructor, is in demand when the public address system goes on the blink. Mr. Marsh's hobby is fooling around with radios. B. S. , KSTC, Emporia, Kansas. MRS. JOSEPHINE MARSHALL teaches Latin and Spanish. Mrs. Marshall is kept jumping by her job as sponsor of both the JCL and the Los Hidalgos. Needle work and books hold her attention. B. S., KSTC, Pittsburg, Kansas. MRS. DORIS PAGE'S job takes her all over the building and half the country side. She goes from gym to swimming to health. Mrs. Page is sponsor of the Pep Club and is the girls' tennis team coach. When she's at home she likes to excercise her hobby of interior decorating. B. S.. KSTC, Pittsburg, Kansas. Many an unsuspecting neighbor has fallen prey to LESTER SPONG'S hobby of home movies of his travels. Besides putting his life in jeopardy several times a day in his chemistry and physics classes, Mr. Spong is a sponsor of the senior class and the Camera Club. B. S. , Ottawa University. H. A. STARKEY, industrial arts instructor, displays a wry sense of humor. When asked about his hobby, he shrugged his shoulders and said it was keeping the year book staff cornfused as to what his hobby was. He is a Student Council advisor. B. S. , KSTC, Emporia, Kansas. If anyone needs to be shown to his seat, he calls for MISS MARY TRUXAL, who is in charge of the ushers needed for school activities. Miss Truxal is one of the mathematics instructors. Her hobby used to be horseback riding but is now weed pulling. A. B., University of Colorado. MISS MARCELLE TUBBS likes music all around her. She is the vocal music instructor. and her hobby is collecting records. Miss Tubbs' work is on public display several times a year with choir concerts and the operetta. B. M. . Bethany College. MISS ALICE UNRUH , English and Journalism instructor is supervisor of the publication of the Panther Tales and the Rhorea. Her hobby is evident in her class room. She likes to grow and collect different varieties of plants. M. S. . Fort Hays State College. VERNER WILLIAMS can be found anywhere about the building. He is the instructor of distributive education, the cafeteria ticket seller and a junior class sponsor. Outside of the building he likes to work with wood and furniture and in his garden. M. S. . X The council promotes many of the school activities and projects such as varsity assemblies, dances after foot- ball and basketball games and a semi- formal dance to close the football season. Among the community projects they sponsored within the school are the Red Cross and Red Feather drives and the March of Dimes. The President, David Loy, presided at all assemblies as the student chair- man. He opened the assemblies by lead- ing the student body in the Pledge of Allegiance and the School Creed. A committee from the council met with faculty representatives to plan the assembly program schedule for the year. Last fall the boys honored their fathers at a Father-Son watermelon feed and a Father-Son chili supper. In the spring the FFA members entertained their parents and teachers with a banquet. For their own enjoyment the boys had ice and roller skating parties and swimming parties. Bill Button had the highest score with Harold Ward, Larry Lunsford, Dale Otte, and Harve Johnson with the next highest scores. The boys attended judging schools at both district and state. The meetings are in English, but there is always something of interest about Spain or Mexico. Students try to have fun and learn at the same time. Their parties carry Mexican themes and they play Mexican games. Major projects for the year consisted of sponsoring the Home Coming Assemblies and Crowning Ceremonies. They also spon- sored a formal Corrigan Dance featuring a. Corrigan King. A good attendance is assured at each game by taking roll of the membership. The plot concerns the search for a missing lottery ticket and has many amusing twists and turns. All sections of the vocal music department participated under the direction of Miss Marcelle Tubbs. The bands were chosen by vote of band directors with the bands most often mentioned winning. This honor includes being featured in the First Chair of America yearbook. Another highlight of the year was the October trip to the Band-Day at Kansas State. Here they played at the Kansas State-Wichita University football game. The band broke all previous records when they had the concession stand during football season. They also received financial help from the newly formed Band Boosters Club. GBHS football and basketball games would not have been so peppy without the band and the pep band playing school songs. The band and its various groups give about 100 performances yearly. They also sponsor such groups as the Kansas University band and orchestra, the Beth- any College band, the Chicago Woodwind Quintet and the Hobart, Indiana band for performances here. They entertain civic groups, P, T, A, 's, and perform in local and out of town parades. The band makes further contributions to local and state affairs by playing in the all-school Christmas program and district and state music festivals. The Panthers finished the season beautifully by defeating both Garden City and Hutchinson in one day sending them into the finals against Dodge City. Dodge defeated the Panthers to win the Regional tournament, but G. B. took the second place trophy. Although the season as a whole lacked in wins, several capable juniors were getting valuable experience and they can look forward to a better season next year. Playing their last cage encounters for GBHS were seniors Jim Green, Gary Barnhill, Lawrence Guliford and Darrel Smith. The Panthers received third place trophy in the Great Bend Invitational Tournament by defeating Garden City. Two players received honorable mentions in the WCKL, Lawrence Guliford and Darrel Smith. Budding varsity stars were cultured this year under the fine coaching of Cecil Dryer. The B's hada see-saw season having both hot and cold streaks winning 5 and losing 13.
