SENIOHS FACE A CHALLENGE Looking into the future the seniors of 1952 leave GBHS with one hundred and thirty members. They take up the challenge to make their own decision and try to make their influence and fresh ideas reshape the world. Some will go to college, others to work, still others will join the armed forces. All of them in three or four years will be able to vote. They will have to call upon what they have learned and experienced to make the right choices. 20 I JOYCE ANN AMERINE Glee Club I, 2, 3,45 Kayettes 2,3,45 Operetta I, 2,3,4. JUNIOR OFFICERS: Robert Boyd, Presidentg Shirley LeRoy, vice-presidentg Peggy Mclxlullin, secretary and George Bemis, treasurer emerge from the new high school after giving it a thorough going-over to be sure things will be in shape for them their senior year. TWO EVENTS HIGHLIGHT JUNIOR YEAH Time marches on and the one hundred and seventy-five juniors move forward toward the end of their high school education. Two big events highlighted this busy year. One was the three-act play, Tattleta1e which exposed them to work, worry, perseverance, enjoyment, and success. The other was the junior-senior prom where they met with the budgeting of their hard earned money in presenting a program that all could enjoy. Again they met with success. 34 Helen Agnew James Alexander Harmon Allinger Esther Asher Marvin Bahr Norman Bailey Alice Baker Marilyn Bales Carole Barker Darrell Batchman Maxine Batchman Mary Batesel Larry Becker Jack Belcher George Bemis Constance Berscheidt Helen Blakeslee James Blakey Roy Bobeck Robert Boyd Bonnie Brack Bruce Brocher Diana Brocher Duane Brown Lois Brown David Byers James Canfield Gordon Charmichael Mae Belle Case Charles Cheney . ,V i f fag- -'if 1.1 ' W is ' eeei Q H,,,,k , 'U K I if Y 'MS .1 ,, K sr A af HW- ' A ' ' '53a1L2 fl'?i:55 ,g ' -'--'ilxiifv ., 3f31'r,gf.15,i 'i'4 ' irq: ll , ' , , , A' q A ' Tl V Q , ., A, A A L,A ., l ,,c., .Lu z l we - ' W f - ' , 'E' :H r 1 J A n el' J- . 1? f -- r A W --'- .V - . u mm- , : E giifgg si 1 A, ,i f' A J I 1 j f' V ' W , f-vt. 2 J : ' ,vi imiffizssffei-:.i 1 AV , q vs' . .AVK , 5' , , 5 , ,. FHESHMEN LAST FHESHMAN CLASS Two hundred and four freshmen stepped through giant doors into high school life in the fall of '51 unaware of the complexities with which they would meet. The hustle and bustle of this entirely new situation stunned them at first but they soon became accustomed to it and became a living part of it. They have contributed to its success by being genuinely interested in becoming an outstanding portion of their new surroundings. 44 Jerry Amerine Dee Ann Anderson Franklin Appl Betty Armstrong Evelyn Atkinson Mary Atkins on Dorothy Atteberry John Bardwell Faye Barker Patsy Barnett Frances Bassett Eldon Batman Grace Bauer Floyd Bell James Benoit Cletus Birzer Carol Blankenship Sandra Blankenship Judith Beopple Ruth Booker Wilma Brack Sandra Brougher Herschel Browning James Burnette Donald Calvert Gary Chitwood Sandra Christiansen -- Jan J A i f N- M.,-1:1 :5:,'V' . The clubs had separate sets of officers, but met and worked together. An inovation this year was the requirement that all pep club members sit in an assigned section. This was carried out at football and basketball games. A large responsibility for the pep clubs was the planning for homecomings. The pep clubs sponsored the assemblies, the parade, and the crownings. l We've got pep Decorating the homecoming float Patrick Keenan, president of boys' pep clubg Barbara Davis, president of girls' pep clubg Norman Keller, boys' secretaryg Katherine Roberts, homecoming chairman, Cheryl Foos, girls' vice-presidentg Neoclis Giannakis, Boys' vice-president, Troy Walker, boys' treasurer, II ,A FRONT ROW: Delores Coffee, Darlene Dohrmann, Barbara Davis, Delores Evers, Ruth Dringman, Joan Fankhauser, Patsy Barnett, Dee Ann Anderson, Loretta Faber, Lois Beller, Alice Baker, Evelyn Atkinson, Mary Atkinson, Gordon Gaunt. Receiving financial help from civic organizations the band chart- ered two busses for a trip to Garden City where they performed at the Great Bend-Garden City football game. The band traveled to Wichita where they saw the Wichita U. - Bradley U. football game and took part in the band day ceremonies. The band used a different style of moving into formations. Instead of marching to their positions the band would run. This style is new for high school bands but it is used in several large college bands. This year's band is the best since I started here , said Mr. Foster, who came here three years ago. Although they played most of their dances at the Eagles Lodge, their big dance was in the high school gym after the basketball homecoming. The officers are William Stejskal, presidentg Harlan Stamper, vice-presidentg Keith Kuhlman, secretary-treasurer. VARSITY HAS SEE-SAW SEASON Fluctuating like a stock market, the varsity had a see-saw season of Wins and losses. Highlighting the season was the de- feat of Garden City, which marked the one-hundredth Win of the Panthers under the able coaching of Allan Burns. Playing their last cage encounter for GBHS were Seniors, Richard Unruh, Leo Robinson, Freddy Moon, William Stejskal, Robert Bobbit, and Richard Vonfeldt. ,t,y slit We mr or K , 'Q cxymjflll. B's Show Improvement After Slovv Start Stitch tips one in for two points in McPherson game. Budding varsity stars were seen when the B-team opposed other yearling teams ' in prelirninary games to varsity action. Coached by Cecil Dryer, the B's had a couple of hot prospects in Mickey Nicolet and Lawrence Guliford. Getting off to a slow start the young Panthers showed im- provemetnt and ended the season with a good won-loss record. 10 2' Coach Ira Barkman brought his young cagers from what looked like an unsuccessful season to a fairly good one. In a mid-season freshman invitational tournament in Great Bend the Kittens came out second behind the young Russell team. Freshman ball is played mostly to impress upon the boys the fundamentals of the game. The boys seem to move the ball better, shoot a little straighter, and fight a little harder as they gain experience. Vonfeldt goes high for setup.
