And of course our cameramen need no introduction: you all know Eugene Starke and Bill Weber. Oh here comes Ruth Cushing. Did you say, XVhat is she doing with those four films? SENIOI2 ClASS Of 1935 One of the largest and greatest productions ever made by the Great Bend High School Com- pany was the production of the Class of l935. Work on this production began in l93l. Directors for the first year were Eugene Starke, president: Glen Cushing, vice-president: Dorothy Archer, secretary, and Virginia Tournear, treasurer. Promoters were Miss Lowry and Miss Mellor. We entered into the second year under the directorship of Glen Cushing, president: Mary Ella Howell, vice-president, and Ruth Tullis, secretary-treasurer. Our promoters for the second year were Miss Hester and Miss Lowry. Miss Hester filled the vacancy caused by Miss Mellor's resignation from School. The third year found us under the direction of Dorothy Archer, president: Eugene Starke, vice-president: June Moore, secretary, and Vera Otte, treasurer. Our promoters were Miss Hester and Mr. Strube, who tilled the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Lowry. The two main incidents of the third year, which did a great deal to assure the success of the production of 1935, were the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Junior Play. The Banquet was a success in every way and the Play proved to be a helpful stepping-stone to our success. Our fourth and last year was decidedly the greatest year of all. There were many important happenings. Our directors for the last year were Glen Schuetz, president: Glen Cushing, vice- president: Ernest Eppstein, secretary, and William Keller, treasurer. Our promoters were Miss Dilsaver, who succeeded Miss Hester, as she had resigned, and Mr. Strube. High lights during this year were the Senior Play, which was certainly a credit to our class. and our successful promotion, cooperating with the Junior Class, of the Lyceum Course, the three professional plays. Another high light of 1935 was the production of our year book the A'Rhorea, under the direction of Nina Sceals. It was an exceptionally good piece of work and we realized very good sales results. The final bit of work on our famous production was the close-up of our accomplishments made in Great Bend High School. These, our diplomas, were presented to us at our graduation exercises. The members of the class successfully proved our motto There are no quitters in the hall of fame. Our colors are blue and silver. We are proud of the talent which our class contains. We have outstanding students in dramatics, music, and scholarship. The production of 1935 had a four-year run and ended the -fourth year by being the greatest production in the history of Great Bend High School. -MARIAN NIADDY. 1f ' .' 11,gg,-, BILL WEBER - Broadway Bill Class Play Stage Manager 3-4, Red and Black Boys l-2-3-4, Red and Black Boys President 4, Football Squad 1-2-3-4, Base- ball Squad l-2, Tennis 2-3-4, Intra-Murals l-2-3-4, Rhorea Staff 4, Latin Club I-2, ELIZABETH WADE - Melody in Spring Operetta I-2-3-4, Operetta Cast 4, Glee Club I-2-3-4, Mixed Chorus 3-4, Triple Trio 4. 'ix - i ,Yu-u-ii' CHARLES ALLEN JACK SCHMIDT NELL EPPSTEIN HAZEL ERBE President Vice-President Treasurer Secretary UNIDD CLAII f 1936 G.B.H.S., one of the country's great producing houses, has allowed this gigantic undertaking The Class of 1936 to be reviewed, although it is not yet completed. We are offering you a review of the first three reels. The fourth reel is yet to be made, but extensive plans are being prepared for its production which is scheduled for next September. Nine months is the estimated time for actual production. We take this opportunity to say that if the fourth reel is as good as the three we here review, Class of '36 will be one of the best of G.B.H.S.'s efforts, if not the best. G.B.H.S. is fast becoming noted for its four year productions. It's system is somewhat like this: Upon the presentation of certain credentials and certificates, boys and girls desiring work in the company are admitted and assigned to certain productions. With the aid of an able staff, four usually are worked upon at the same time. This show was started in the fall of 1932 with a cast of about 100. Mr. Daniel Boone and Miss Lois YVaples, who need no introduction to C1.B.H.S., were assigned as directors. And now here is the story in three reels of the Class of l936. REEL ONE The Cast of Characters was as follows: Hazel Erbe, president: Charles Allen, vice-president: Jack Schmidt, treasurer: Ralph Essmiller, secretary, and the large supporting cast of the famous C1.B.H.S. boys and girls. Mr. Daniel Boone and Miss Lois Waples were the directors of this stupendous reel. There is one scene which deserves much merit. In the class basketball tournament there were three teams tied for the title. our team had the largest number of points so naturally assumed the title. Another scene is a one act play presented by Myron Davis, Edna Belle Doonan, Mary Ellen Weber, and Mildred Harper. REEL TWO The Cast of Characters of this reel has been changed somewhat but the same four people have the leads. Charles Allen, president: Hazel Erbe, vice-president: Jack Schmidt, secretary: and Ralph Essmiller, treasurer. At the beginning of this reel Miss Waples was called away to another studio to help in the making of another production and her place was very nicely filled by Miss Novma J. Mering. Possibly the most outstanding scene is another one act play presented by Pauline Arnold. Louise Sherwood, Bob Templeton, Don Saunders, and Jack Schmidt. REEL THREE The cast is hardly changed with Charles Allen being the most outstanding star for the second successive reel by being president, Jack Schmidt as vice-president, Hazel Erbe as treasurer, and Nellie Eppstein as secretary. There were many outstanding scenes, in this reel, the first being the winning of the title in the inter-class basketball tournament. Another was a one act play presented by Ralph Essmiller, Bob Templeton, Gwendolyn Trester and Rowland Raup. Perhaps the most outstanding scene was the Junior-Senior' Banquet in which the Class of '36 entertained the Class of '35. Another scene perhaps as outstanding was the presentation of a three act play Here Comes Three Knights. The necessary finances were raised this year by selling Lyceum tickets in which the Class of '36 sold 5270 while the Class of '35 only sold 48 Wa. Tickets were also sold to the three act Junior play. -ROWLAND RAUP. 20 Bob Templeton I.ois XVilka Gladys Schultz Ralph Essmiller Mary Jane Trcster Neva Woods David Ewing Ruth Grubb Dorothy Bardwell Donald Saunders Mary Ellen Weber Helen Koelsch Roy Evans Helen Edman Raymond Brining Josephine Gassman Mildred Harper Robert Doonan Pauline Arnold Jack Caraway Gwendolyn Trestcr May Ellen Griggs Merle Miller Mary Alice Welch Mary Bagby Ray McCoy CLASS 936 qw pr Arthur Ballou Leona Wess Nadine Johnson Roy Thomas Bird May Smith Clara Kummer Martin Allen Louise Sherwood Marion Matthews lrene Keeley Lorraine Schneider lrvin Foelgner Margaret Naylor Harry Walts Alice Keenan Alice Goodwin Kenneth Fradd Bcrnadine Doherty Geneva Gamber John Glenn Lucile Tomnitz Dixie Hixon Clifford Patchen Annabel Start Clarence Vlfells Selma NVerhahn Deborah Sharp Glen Pierson Helena Hulme James Cook Thelma Sprague Hazel Meycr Rowland Raup Josephine Suchy l,ela Zumalt William Truxal Maxine Smith Robert Herrcn Emma Campbell Dora Schrepel Marvin Posey Viola Palmer Eulala Wells Vernon Foelgner Marie Nickel Margaret XVerhahn Arlo Luther Helen Neuforth Irma Johnson Flora Eitel Dorothy Johnson Clayton Doty Emerald Moon Marie Dunekack Margaret Weatl1e1's .-X. FRANK GABEL VIRGINIA I-IANS Secretary Treasurer WINIFRED HANS JOAN BONDURANT Vice-President President nlsrom or sown one emu In the year 1933 in the lirst part of September, a real group of performers came to Holly- wood. This group of performers was the class of 1937. They started out under a board of directors composed of Joan Bondurant, president: Hazel Engleman, vice-president: Barbara Moore, treasurer: and Dan Alefs, secretary. The censors were Mr. Dodd and Miss Allis. The first production by this company was a one act comedy, Prose Preferred with an all star cast composed of Harold Ashpole, Dolores Coyne. Erwin Tucker, Virginia Dodge, Russell Townsley, Ruth Lewis, and Virginia Hans. This comedy was presented before the critics of G.B.H.S. It was a success and the cast gained fame. The Movie Queen of the group was Virginia Hans and the Movie King was Doyle Clarke. They were chosen by the members contracted in the Freshman Movie Company, Inc. The first year in Hollywood was a decided success. Early in September of 1934 the same group organized a new Movie Company called the Sophomore Snappiesf' This time they had as directors Joan Bondurant, president: Winifred Hans, vice-president: Frank Gabel, secretary: and Virginia Hans, treasurer. The same censors were kept. The Sophomores attempted something that had been neglected for some years. They published and financed a school paper called Black Panther. It was sold in every corner of the G.B.H.S. Studio. The idea was suggested and carried out by Rush Barnes, an imported star, who has been of great value to the company. The paper was a decided success and G.B.I-I.S. owes much to the Sophomore Snappies as a result. The Snappies have added much pep to G.B.H.S. as they are well represented in every organization in the school, whether it be pep, sport, religious, musical, or any other organization. The colors of the Snappies are blue and silver: their flower, sweetpea: and the motto, 'iSumma Summarumf' They are just what the motto suggests, Best of the Best. . The Snappies will have gained fame everywhere when they have completed the two remain- ing years in'G.B.H.S. at which time they will leave the direction of their censors and directors and go out into movieland by themselves. -RUTH HULL. 24 I r 1 I J' I 4' Top Row-Loyal Otte. The following stars were selected: president, Dale Engleman: vice-president, Bill Savoy: secretary, Lee Bird: treasurer. Paul Damm: cheerleader, Evelyn Yetschke. Our directors are Miss Truxal and Miss Shoemaker. The class of '38 sponsored a sandwich sale to earn money for their pages in the Rhorea. They also gave a one act chapel play entitled Queen Ann's Lace. The cast was: Alberta Lischcsky, Virginia Powell, Edna Mae Amend, Robert Bird and Gilbert Russell. The class has lived up to the standard of G.B.H.S. as we have a goodly number on the honor roll each six weeks and the fact that six of our boys made the football team and four the basketball team shows that we are not lacking school spirit. -LEE BIRD. 26 Top Row-Mona Schmidt, Helen Schulz, Eugene Schenk, Grace Neuforth, Carl Coffee, Miss Truxal. 3rd Row-Beatrice Gibson, Guy Parsons, Paul Schulz, John Chitwood, Marjorie YVells, Helen Suchy, Geneva Gregg, Mervin Brewer. From the very tirst of the season the boys showed the finest type of teamwork. Known as the Black Panthers, this team justly lived up to its title. Showing a surprising oifensive and defensive power. this light team, was often out-weighed but seldom out-fought. The team played with a spirit and attitude that gained much admiration and respect for our high school. The season record. ive games won, two games tied, and two games lost. is the best since 1920. The Panthers made a total of 109 points and allowed their opponents only 57 points. This record is made more remarkable when it is known that this team only averaged 144 pounds per man, and was out-weighed by all opposing teams except Ellinwood. The first game with Claflin was lost 19 to 6. Our team under lire for the first time, did not prove very effective in stopping their adversaries. The game at Kinsley was a diiierent story. Out-weighed 12 pounds to a man, our Black Panthers used their dangerous passing attack to win 13 to 0. The formidable Hays Catholic eleven, with a weight advantage of 15 to 20 pounds per man, had a seven point lead at the half, but the second half found our jungle cats going wild. Our team scored on the first play with an 80-yard run. ln live minutes after a terrihc drive, our team scored again, and then held its lead the rest ol? the game to win 12 to 7. The St. John game ended with a 6 to 6 tie. The team won another victory' at Ellinwood Z6 to 0. Working smoothly, our Panthers defeated the hard fighting Russell team Z6 to 6. Behind seven points at the half, our team out-fought the Lyons eleven to win that thrilling contest 13 to 7. On a slippery, wet lield and out-weighed ten pounds per man, our fighting Panthers out-played Pratt the iirst half and missed a touchdown only by inches. The Pratt team scored a lone touchdown the second half to win the game 6 to 0. Out-weighed 10 to 20 pounds to a man, our Black Panthers easily out-played Larned, only to miss the well earned victory in the closing minutes. The game ended in a 6 to 6 tie. The most important factor in this team's success has been the wonderful work of Coach Lawrence Gunn. With only four letter-men on his squad he developed a team that will long be remembered for its success. He not only taught these boys to play good football, but most important he has taught them sportsmanship, loyalty, and teamwork. His encouragement and coaching enabled the team to play to its best advantage and to carry on against great odds. The teamwork was so evident that the games rarely featured any individual player, and the defense always seemed to work best when the opponents threatened to score. Glen Cushing and Harold Williams were the Co-Captains of the team. Elmer Becker, Thaine Ewing, and the two Co-Captains were letter-men from last year's team. Coach Gunn, with two lettermen on his squad, soon had a fast and scrappy bunch of cagers to go on the court. Although they lost most of their games, our Black Panthers were regarded as worthy opponents. They used a fast break on the offensive and a shifting ball defense. z, '- The tirst high spot of the season came in the game with Larned. In the overtime period our team made three field goals to win the game 27 to 21. In the best game of the season our goal tossers defeated the Lyons team 26 to 22. This was the Lyons team's first defeat of the season after 10 victories. Although they lost by small margins, our Panthers played good basetball in the games with Pawnee Rock and Russell. Our team entered the tournament at Larned and almost defeated the powerful Kingman team in a thrilling game. The final score was 31 to 39. Glen Schuetz, forward, was high point man for our Black Panthers. He made 128 points and averaged 8 points per game. Evans and Eppstein played forward positions: Cushing and Savoy, center and guard positions: Williams and Coffee, guard positions. These boys played practically the whole season against taller opponents. Those who received first team letters were Glen Schuetz, Glen Cushing, Harold Williams, Ardery Coffee, Roy Evans, and Bill Savoy. Schuetz and Cushing were lettermen from last year's team. The second team played some good games this season and developed promising material for next year's squad. The second team lettermen are Charles Allen, W. L. Clark, Doyle Clark, Carl Coffee, James Cook. Clifford Patchen, and Jack Schmidt. Charles Allen was high point man on the second team with 58 points. The faculty and students faithfully supported the Panthers the entire season, and the boys on the squad individually gained valuable experience from these games. -GLEN CUSHING. This team, consisting of Milton Weide, captain, Maurice Koelsch, Howard Miller, Joe Kramer, Robert Mason, John Roberts, and Gerald Axtell. won 9 games and lost one. The Thunderbolts placed second by winning 8 games and losing 2. The other teams in the order of their standing were the Dinosaurs, Trojans, Rattlesnakes, Sure Shots, Cornhuskers. Sharks, Zephers, and the Flying Rhinoes. -GLEN CUSHING. . l5Il2lS' INTIQAMIJIQALS There were a few girls around the studio this year that wished to play basketball between scenes, so they cleared out some props and old scenery and put up a court. They organized into four teams with captains and descriptive titles, such as: Super-Aces, captain, Ruth Cushing: Peppy Puppets, captain, Clara Kummer: Winners, captain, Louise Newkirk: and Goal- ers, captain, Elva Rose Payne. The Super-Aces came out ahead. They organized again into two teams, the Fighters, with Odessa Bowser, captain: and the XYZ, with Elva Rose Payne, captain. The Fighters came out ahead this time. These girls are hoping that the directors will let them continue in this sport next year with the help of Miss Shoemaker, who was so patient with them this year. -RUTH CUSI-IING. 34 - ' A--f-1-----.,, Y . Hadley and John Taff, turned out some extremely creditable productions. The Orchestra and Glee Clubs are directed by Mr. Hadley and the Band by Mr. Talf. The orchestra has a personnel of thirty-three members, the Junior-Senior girls' Glee Club of twenty-eight, the Freshman- Sophomore girls' Glee Club of twenty-six. and the boys' Glee Club of forty-three. The Boys' Quartette consists of Don Saunders, Lee Wade, Bob Templeton, and Albert Meador: the Girls' Quartette of Elizabeth Wade, Ruth Tullis, Frances Younkin. and Evelyn McClain. The mixed Quartette consists of Virginia Mull, Ruth Tullis, Lee Wade, and Bob Templeton. The string trio is made up of Ruth Brown, violin: Winifred Hans, piano: and Bernese Maddy, cello: and the string quartette of three violins-Marjorie Gunn, Frances Mull and Ruth Tullis, and a cello, Margaret Slentz. The company went on location March 7-8-9 in Wichita, where a Festival was produced consisting of an all-state chorus and orchestra with a cast of six hundred. The chorus was under the direction of W. Otto Miessner and the orchestra was under the direction of Joseph E. Maddy, professor of band and orchestra music at the University of Wisconsin. G.B.H.S. re- ceived honors through two students: Virginia Mull was given a scholarship in voice and Marian Maddy was honored the night of the concert by being asked to act as concert-maestro for the last and most difficult number on the program. The Vitaphone Department of G.B.H.S. also participated in the production at the Pratt Studio. We were entered in all but three events, the bassoon, oboe, and French horn. In March the Vitaphone Sound department put on a production in the form of an operetta entitled,, Tune In. The cast included the following: Virginia Mull, Frank McCauley, Joe Kramer, Frances Osburg, Hilda Slentz, Bob Templeton, Frances Younkin, Evelyn McClain, Elizabeth Wade, Albert Meador, Lee Wade, Russell Townsley, Gerald Axtell, and Jack Caraway, with Mr. Hadley as director of music. Miss Allis as speech coach, Marian Maddy as accompanist, and Fred Newcombe stage manager. Every seat in the High School Auditorium was occupied and standing room was sold to forty people. The operetta was well presented and our school is proud of our music department. TUNE IN -HIGH SCHODL OPIEIQIEITA A crowd that jammed the high school auditorium gave an enthusiastic reception March l, to the high school operetta Tune In which was presented by the music department of the Senior high school under the direction of Carleton E. Hadley. The lead parts handled their lines and vocal numbers with skill and the evidence of good coaching and the ensemble numbers and specialty performances merited the generous applause they all received. The operetta was pleasing and was a trenchant burlesque of a sponsored radio program, in this instance that of the mythical Kroggins Kippered Kodfish company, and the romantic leads were very ably handled by Miss Virginia Mull, Miss Hilda Slentz, Frank McCauley, and Bob Templeton. Those who aided in the work of preparing and presenting the operetta included Miss Eda Allis, speech coach, Miss Marian Maddy. accompanist, Miss Mildred Harper, dance manager, Miss Bernice Dorfshaffer and Mary Joel Hulme, in charge of posters and advertising and R. C. Denton, in charge of ticket sales.-GREAT BEND TRIBUNE. DUI? BAND In the fall of 1933 a production was started in the studio of Great Bend High School. The director, who has had much experience, not only in this line but as one of the cast in productions of this same type in the East, is John Talf. He has made a fine showing with this group of players and they have won much recognition, both at home and out-of-town. The present number in the organization is ,forty-three. New sound elfects and stage properties along with costumes were added this year to the organization's list of equipment. The band sponsored the variety program of Hoots and Quacks given by Ben F. Hammond of the Wichita Eagle. So excellent was the sale of tickets that this one venture netted sufficient funds to outfit the band in sweaters and oversca caps. Much credit should be given to Mr. Tall' for his ine work with these young people and his untiring efforts to make this organization a success. 37 Top Row-Mr. Bonecutter. No? Then let's do. We won't have far to go: they're finishing a picture over at G.B.H.S. Here we are. I'm sure they won't mind if we look in. H'm no one's here: that'll give us a chance to inspect the scenery. Those four high school years of hard study mixed with jolly good times make an interesting background, don't they? Aren't these clever little footstools- this one like a football and the other one like a basketball. They certainly give an air of com- radeship and good fellowship. And this old English tea table- -it makes you' feel as though a butler carrying a tray with tea and tiny cakes would appear any moment. Just look how this blue and white G.R. triangle lamp shade softens the light of the room: isn't it lovely? Shall we look at these cameras? Why, there are four of them. They all seem to be named, too. This one is Character, and that one on the left-isn't it Service? This one back here is Scholarship and the one over there is Leadership. Isn't that a marvelous way to film a picture? The actors and actresses will certainly have to be at their best under such close scrutiny. Someone's coming. Oh. it's Mr. Bonecutter. and there's Miss Jacobs, too. They are the directors, you know. I've heard that they are so good they could make a stone image act. Would you like to wait till the cast arrives? Here they come! They are chosen by the Academy of Motion-picture Awards four facultyj. Glen Cushing and Virginia Mull are coming in through the left entrance. They have the leads: Glen is the president and Virginia is his lovely young secretary. Here come the rest. They are Dorothy Archer, Nina Sceals, Elda LeRoy, Jean Hamilton, Winifred Haley, and Glen Schuetz-the senior actors. and Charles Allen, Louise Sherwood, and William Truxal-the juvenile actors. That is all of them: shall we go? It was very interesting, wasn't it? l hope it will bring them all fame and success when it is released, don't you? The picture they are shooting? The membership this year has been larger than any other year. Do you remember the Hrst impressive initiation service when over a hundred girls became followers of the Grail? Since that day they've had a lot of grand times together. Hitting the highlights, let's recall the book-exchange which operates at a prolit and helps to finance the club: gaze back upon those good old days at Camp Wood, or the Conferences. There were some line programs too, especially at Hallowe'en and Thanksgiving. At Christmas the G, R.'s plea for food and clothes for the needy was gratined. Hobby clubs flourished under capable supervision and added interest. The Hnal triumph was the Mother-Daughter banquet in May. The girls of this, the oldest organization in our high school, strive ever to be: Gracious in manner, lmpartial in judgment. Ready for service. Loyal to friends, Reaching for the best, Earnest in purpose, Seeing the beautiful, Eager for knowledge, Reverent to God. Victorious over self, Ever dependable, and Sincere at all times. -NELLIE EPPSTEIN. G. HOMIE IECONDMICS CllJI3 The Home Economics Club was organized and affiliated with the National Home Economics Association in 1931-32 under the name of Alpha Phi. The purposes of the club are: To create interest in the many phasesl of home economics, to develop worthy home membership, and to furnish opportunity for leadership. The insignia of the club is the Betty Lamp which forms the design used on the pin. The Betty Lamp was used in early days by the housewives. They carried this lamp from place to place to light their way. The lamp is a symbol for learning. We had a picnic in the fall for the new members and we elected some of our oflicers for the year of 1934-35. We had different ways of making money such as our candy sale, and the football banquet. At one meeting we had a talk and demonstration on cosmetics and hairdress- ing by Mrs. Gruber after which a covered dish luncheon was served to Mrs. Gruber and the members. This year there were 21 members in the club with Miss Dilsaver as sponsor, Gwendolyn Tres- ter as president. Helen Griffiths as vice-president, Helen Edman as secretary, Winifred Hans as treasurer, and Alice Goodwin as program chairman. -GWENDOLYN TREST ER. 41 THE IDEPPEIQETTE CLUB The Pepperettes this year were very successful in their activities. Virginia Tournear, as pres- ident, played the roll of leading star. under the direction of Miss Mering and Miss XVeare. Co- starring were Ruth Tullis, vice-president: Dorothy Newell, secretary: Virginia Hans. treasurer: and Mildred Harper, cheerleader. In addition to these stars, the rest of the Pepperettes completed the company and assisted the leading actors in their many performances. Some of the spectacular events were the Pepperette initiation, selling of Football Tickets, Pepperette Chapel, and stunts at the games. The finale of the show was the Pepperette Picnic, which added to the pep and enthus- iasm of the club, and we hope this pep and enthusiasm will continue during the following years. -KATHERINE LOVI l l' PEPPERETTES Mildred Almquist Edna May Amend Ketah Barrett Maurine Barrett Lucile Brown Virginia Evans Marie Fleming Margaret Funk Gale Haley Winifred Haley Bertha Higgins Betty Humble Alberta Lischesky Bernice Maddy Doris Miller Barbara Moore Dorothy O'ConneIl Frances Osburg Virginia Powell Dorothy Dean Rinker Nina Sceals Lucile Tomnitz Mary Ellen YNeber Fay Aldrich Dorothy Archer Mary Bagby Virginia Barricklow Nadine Boyle Mary Ellen Carter Loretta Damm Virginia Dodge Helen Edman Nellie Eppstein Hazel Erbe Helen Evans Alice Goodwin Marjorie Gunn Virginia Hans Winifred Hans Irene Hardy Clara Kummer June Moore Frances Mull Dorothy Newell Vera Otte Wilma Ray Gladys Schulz Louise Sherwood Jean Thompson Joan Bondurant Virginia Tournear Gwendolyn Trester Ruth Tullis Neva Woods .Iaunita McCoy Mary Jane Trester Katherine Lovitt Doris Jean Dodge .lean Hamilton Mildred Harper Marian Maddy Louise Newkirk Elva Rose Paine Hilda Slentz Selma Werhahn Marietta Younkin Lois Wilka Virginia Mull Ist Row-Harold Campbell, Owen Bushnell, Vernon Koch, Kenneth Smith, Bill Weber, Jerry Murphy, Delbert Cole, and W. DIED AND BLACK BUYS The Red and Black Boys started their new production of 1935 by electing as their leaders: Bill Weber, president: Rowland Raup, vice-president: Owen Bushnell, secretary-treasurer: and O. E. Bonecutter, sponsor. One of the co-captains of the football team said, With such a good supporting cast as the Red and Black Boys, we were able to make the season's run with greater success than ever. An assembly program was given which consisted largely of sound effects and pepped up the football team so that they upset the dope by defeating Hays. As usual the members of the club used considerable ingenuity in their initiation program for the new members. The regular initiation was followed by the requirement that each, candidate come bare-footed to school the next day and wear a set of false teeth. The club owes its excellent financial condition primarily to the efforts of Vernon Koch and lrwin Tucker who had charge of peanut sales at the football games. Since the primary motive of the Red and Black Boys Club is to promote pep in G.B.Il.S., we feel that our object has been gained. -BILL WEBER. 43 Top Row-Mildred Barricklow. sponsor. June Moore. All precedents were upset and the staff was chosen entirely from the Sophomore Class. Since the Juniors were preparing for the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Seniors were editing the Rhorea, the school paper was to be the contribution of the Sophomores throughout the school year. While the preparations for the first paper were going forward, the student body waited expectantly to see the result of the efforts which the staff was putting forth fthe majority being in doubt as to the ability of the few Sophomoresl. At last it was released. The name was that of the school's athletic teams, THE BLACK PANTHER. So many wanted to see what this small, directorless production would be like that this first issue was a complete sell-out. This first success encouraged the cast so much that they carried a second reel over, This reel was considerably larger and better than the first. Let us pause now to say that these first issues were put out only with the splendid cooperation of Mr. Bonecutter and Miss Weare. After a few more issues Miss Taul, the Junior English teacher, because of her ability and interest in this new experiment, was made director. A few shifts had been made in the cast so as to get the best out of each member, but now it was settled. They were as follows: Editor-in-Chief-Rush Barns News Editors-Irene Hardy and Associate Editors-Katherine Lovitt and Frances Mull Joan Bondurant Sports Editor--John Roberts Business Manager-Erwin Tucker Humor Editors-Virginia Hans and Circulation Manager-Harold Ashpole Russell Townsley Literary Editor-Ruth Lewis f Art Editor-Mary Joel Hulme Sponsor-Miss Taul The paper is now practically assured for the coming year. It is the sincere hope of all the staff members that it has and will continue to please the student body. -RUSH BARNS THE lATIN CUJI3 We shall ring up the curtain and watch the Latin Clubs as they go on set to give us a review of their year's work. TT MUS C CDNTIEST Fram the Greal Bend Daibf Tribune, Monday, April 15, 1935 Great Bend's entrants in the llth annual invitational fine arts contests at Pratt returned home late Saturday bringing with them a handsome bronzed plaque for having placed first as sweepstakes winner of the Class A com- petition. A total of 110 students from the high school and the junior high took part and the combined points scored in the various contests gave Great Bend first place over nine Class A schools in central Kansas for the first time in the school's history. Ellinwood, which sent down 69 students, also made a fine showing for the county, plac- ing third in the Class B competition in which 28 schools were entered. It was the first time Ellinwood had entered the Pratt contest and the second time for Great Bend, both schools having previously taken part in the contests at Hays. Both Superintendent H. C. Scarborough and Principal Bonecutter were unsparing of their praise of the work of Carleton E. Hadley, mu- sic director of the schools, on whom the bur- den of preparing the contestants fell and to whom much of the credit for the fine showing made by the local students is due. They also spoke highly of the work of John Tali who has built up the school band and came through triumphantly Saturday, leading his organization to nrst place in the Class A band competition. The high degree of perfection shown in most of the string instrument work is due largely to the instruction of Professor P. E. Tilley. The local band placed first among four bands given excellent ratings of which the Pratt band, which has been organized for years and this year sported new uniforms purchased for them by the Pratt Junior Chamber of Commerce at a cost of 31.000, came in fourth. Besides the band placing first, Great Bend won four other first places and in every con- test but two in which the ratings were given as average placed either good or better. The contests were judged as highly superior, su- perior, excellent, good, average, below average and inferior. Pratt, which was ineligible for the sweep- stakes prize as they were playing host to the other schools, scored the greatest number of points with 127 but Great Bend with 113 points led the other schools as first place winner. Kingman was second with 107 points. In the solo and reading contests a highly superior rating was given three points: a su- perior rating, two points: and excellent, one point. All ratings below these were not given points. In the band and mixed chorus numbers ten points were given for highly superior rat- ings, eight points for superior and five points for excellent. For the glee clubs eight points were given for highly superior, five for superior and three for excellent: and for quartets five points were 54 given for highly superior, three for superior and two for excellent. Great Bend had entrants in 25 different competitive events and the excellent showing made speaks well for the hard work and the ability of Mr. Hadley. Besides having charge of music work in the high schools he also has charge of the grade school music work, and with directing the various musical organiza- tions, his regular school work and outside as- sistance to other musical organizations, devotes a great deal of time and effort in building up the city's musical standards. It was gratifying to hear that we had won first place, Mr. Hadley said today, and l wish to thank the students for the fine way they came through. Much of the credit for winning first place goes to them and also to Mr. Taff who besides directing the band has given me invaluable aid in preparing for the contest. In the solos and readings which were run off Friday at Pratt, Winifred Hans tied for second with a rating of excellent in the piano solo competition: Margaret Slentz placed hrst for cello with a rating of excellent: Alberta Lis- chesky placed third with a rating of excellent in the dramatic readings: Ruth Tullis received a rating of good for girls' low voice: Evelyn McClain placed average in the girls' medium voice, but would indubitably have placed higher had she not been suffering from such a severe cold that it was doubtful if she would be able to enter at all: Marian Maddy placed first with a rating of superior in the violin and Helena Hulme received a rating of good in the clarinet solos. In the contests Friday the Great Bend string trio composed of Bernese Maddy, Winifred Hans and Ruth Brown placed second with a rating of excellent.
