SENIOR BOULDERS Back in the Stone Ages, men fought hard for what they wanted: foes were conquered and the world moved gradually. Through constant grasping for new things, civilization was established. Today, we. like cavemen, are led by our own ingenuity into things before us. And so it is recorded that the old hunting grounds of knowledge became too small to hold all the tribes of G. B. H. S, The Great Bend bands were fighting hard for a new Held, a place large enough to supply our wants. This new land was opened up in 1925 in our new High School building. The youngest tribe entering this field of learning. but yet the largest, having one hundred and twenty-live young conquerors, was the Class of '29, Our true leaderg Helen Bales, was elected to command this wonderful band. Protection was necessary. and the Lions Club voluntarily appointed themselves as our guardians. The second year in the field was also a gain. J. B. Brown, an able chieftain, was elected President. The Class of '27 tried to overpower us in a conflict but we stood steadfast: at least we won a tin loving cup, which we had engraved at their cost. The third year was a most victorious one: our warriors overpowered all in the battles. Our new leader, Florence Harrison, led us through a most memorable year, and a wonderful banquet was the reward: This year is the last one of the tribe, until it shall disband and unite with greater tribes. The great warrior chieftain, Maurice Barricklow, has led the Class of '29 through the last great year together. As these warriors go out to become leaders in their own field, may they cherish the thoughts of the Held where they were victorious in gaining the foundation of their knowledge. ' -R. QJQO HELEN RUSSELL EARL THOMPSON Junior President Vice-President LUCILE HANS ALICE ZUTAVERN Secretary Treasurer JUNIOR ROCKS Many years ago, when the Stone Age was in its prime, a tribe called Freshmen came forth to conquer the world, and on their journey halted at the Great Bend High School, intending to remain four years to prepare themselves to go out into the world to do brave deeds and to conquer the diihculties of life. They chose, that year, Cora Harris for their leader. The Freshman Tribe had three other tribes battling against them, but they managed to hold their own. The second year they ascended one more step on this ladder of knowledge and were then known as the Sophomore Tribefwith Max Leek as their chieftain, Then came the third year, and with more knowledge gained they ascended to the third step. Under the leadership of Helen Russell they have had a successful year and now as Juniors have only one rival tribe, the Seniors. During these three years this tribe has had many of its , brave men prominent in the athletic field and this year the tribe has come forth in the dramatic field. In 1930 the tribe will have ascended the four steps of this ladder of knowledge and will leave this battlelield of lessons to go out into the world and accomplish other difficult deeds. -K. Being rugged conquerors. naturally they were fast workers, and so they held a meeting for selecting the ofiicers for the tribe. Charles Murphy was selected as chief, Walter Fuhr as chief-in-waiting, Mildred Barricklow as the chief's private secretary. and Danelda Harper as the treasure tender. They succeeded in getting only fourth place in the basketball tournament. but this did not dampen their spirits any, and they went on through that wonderful first year successfully. In 1928 they entered the high school under the name of Sophomores. This time the tribe's great chief was Harry Harms, and the chief-in-waiting was Virginia Post. Stoke Edman and Eldon Ewing, two able warriors, were in charge of the stone records and the treasure hoard. This year they got third place in the tournament, thus a little better than the first great year. They nnished the first semester with a bang and are in hopes of turning out a 100 per cent Junior Class for the 1929 fall term. -S. President RUSSELL PASCHAL Vice-President EARL MOHR Secretary -Treasurer FRESHMAN SAND It is scarcely necessary for us to introduce ourselves, the Freshman Tribe of 1932. But for the sake of those dwellers in the great G. B. H. S. Cave of Learning who cannot see our accom- plishments, we relate some of the conflicts of our nrst year. As a young, rugged band we endeared ourselves to our elders by our winning ways and our adorable mannerisms of actions. Contrary to the general rule, we have been looked up to and loved by our superiors. When the master-god of the cliff-dwellers, Mr. O. E. Bonecutter, calls upon the school in general for great deeds, the Freshman tribe's names are called first. Why? Not because we are the youngest. but because we are the most daring. We must confess, since the other bands of the school call us green, that a rolling stone gathers no moss, and green moss won't gather on a roving band of tribesmen like the Class of '32, Quoting from Montgomery Ward '25 Co., the supply house that furnishes everything to our cave-dwellers but sheepskins, we may say that we are a remarkable class of superior and high-grade quality. What truer words can be quoted? As to the school conflicts and battles, we can say that we have supplied strong warriors for the school. Five of our brave fighters were on the football tirst team, and two have been hard fighters in basketball. This is a swell showing for our great tribe. We will surely go out as graduates in 1932 as a successful band. msec E We Q 1:7 . It is a beautiful organization, spiritually and religiously. At the beginning of the year a membership campaign was held. Then to get better acquainted we had a Gypsy Patteran which was held at Lake Barton. In November we had the G. R, play Miss Somebody Elsef' being a success dramatically and financially. In December the G. R. sent delegates to the mid-Winter G. R. conference at Sterling. These girls were sent so that they might come back to help inspire the others. Thirty-Seven NORA ZUTAVERN MISS EDNA TAUL MARGARET WELSH KEITH BONDURANT Coach DORIS DEVORE Negative Team Affirmative Team Interest in debate this year has been greater than is usual for Great Bend High School. The season opened with the Hrst team composed of three experienced debaters and one new member. The second team was an entirely new and inexperienced squad. Both teams entered an Invitation Tournament sponsored by the Delta Epsilon Alpha Forensics League, at Coats, Kansas, on October 22 and 23, and as a result there are two new loving cups in our trophy case, and each member of both teams has a medal. The State League debates opened with Great Bend matched against Hoisington on January 12. Hoisington was the victor in this debate. Great Bend losing 3-0 in both places. But this defeat only spurred the Great Bend debaters on, and in the debate with St. John on January ZZ, Great Bend came out victorious. The Stafford debate on February 13 was a tie-the amrmative losing Z-l, and the negative winning Zfl. The final debate with Sterling on Iiebruary ZZ was another victory for Great Bend. The season closed with a tourna- ment at Hays on March 22 and Z3. In this tournament, Margaret Welsh placed on the all-star team. We feel that our success. if it may be called that, is due in a great part to the patient and untiring efforts of our coach, Miss Edna Taul. She worked with us faithfully for three months, and without her help we never could have won. The others winning medals at Coats were Clarence Brandt, Miles Cole, Tedrick Irwin, and Ralph Button. -M W- 3 -I - 1 5 ts V N J -ggpa eeaaaaclebi eereeftea? That is a question many times before this term that has had to be debated. Enthusiasm in school functions this term has exceeded all others years by a great margin. Many things were accomplished in the line of sports with almost the entire school-body and townspeople backing the teams. A general revolution has come about this term in Pep. New Pep clubs were started this year that did their bit in arousing the school spirit. New songs and yells have been composed, and two real live-wire leaders, Helen Townsley and Maurice Faulkner, have led us to victory in keep- ing this Pep back Of the teams. Stunts were carried out that emphasized vic- tory to the spectators, and victory was ours many and many times. There are other things in old G. B. H. S. that are somewhat unknown. There are organizations in the school, and which are not secret, that little is heard of. How many knew that the Latin students are organized and call themselves the Societas Latina? They held their Roman banquet on March 21, 1929, carrying out the customary habits of the ancients by reclining on benches by the tables. That's a very restful mood to be in. Another organization of the school is the B Club. This group of school heroes and men who have won cups and honor have done one big thing in the sense of school viewpoints. No rival city could put anything over on them, so they forbid foreign letter sweaters to be worn in G. B. H. S. This was a dirty trick to make the home girls date only home boys. Whether or not it works as for dates, yet outside letters are not worn in school now. A change was made in the Senior play cast after the pictures were taken. Paul Suellentrop took Eston Rose's place as Mr. John Hargrave. The Senior play as a whole was a case of think or thwimf' according to Billy. Epidemics sometimes cause a great decrease in the school roll. This year such a decrease has been noticeable in G. B. H. S. twice. First came the flu. and then later the measles swept us to our beds. Oh, well! it gave some of the tired students a needed rest, anyhow.
