Larry is not only responsible for the general maintenance of our school and grounds, which includes three separate buildings and approximately four acres of land, but must be knowledgeable about plumbing, heating, electrical maintenance, painting, roofing, etc. in order to be on top of any emergency that might come up. Through his dedication and care. Larry tends to the needs of our Hallowed Halls . One might find Larry on duty at 6:30 in the morning stoking the furnace and at 9:30 in the evening cleaning up after the evening's school activity. During special events, such as Homecoming and GAA Dances, you will probably find Larry on duty until 1:00 a.m. The Class of '88 wishes to extend our thanks to Mr. Butler for alt those hours that he has devoted to our school. The 1987 Grayville Volleyball team brought home their first ever Regional Title after crushing the Edwards County Lions in a 15-10, 15-7 match. They went on to the Sectional and won their first match against McLeansboro the Bison were defeated in a nerve racking 3 game match. Thanks to tht support of the school and parents, they were able to walk into any game with their heads high and with a lot of hope. The 1987 Volleyball Team will always be remembered as the AKT! 34 33 1988-89 Basketball Bison: KNEELING: Doug Duncan, Mike Munsey. Marc Neeley. Mark Stone, Vic Hawkins, Troy O’Donley, Chris Shelton. STANDING: Jackie Wells, Pete Clancy, Damn Houck. James Buckman.Jeff Haywood, Bobby Hatcher, Scott Collins, Charles Lmnemann, Chad Alldredge, Brian Barnes. Brad Funkhouter, Bobby Buckman. Scoots The Bison had a tough hill to climb after the team won the school's only regional crown the year before. The team lost much of its scoring punch to graduation and transfers, and new head coach Jim Goings was given the task of rebuilding the team. Led by all Mid-South pick James Buckman, returning starter Jeff Haywood, and 6'5 senior Charlie Lmnemann the Bison held their own in quite a few contests. Tony Knight’s late season entrance gave the herd a new scoring opportunity and some more size. Consistent play from underclassmen Scott Collins. Bobby Buckman, and Brad Funkhouser shows promise for the future. Probably the best win this season was a homecoming victory over Edwards County who had defeated the Bison earlier. The toughest defeat came at the hands of Mt. Carmel whom the home team led by ten at halftime only to see that margin disappear. With a squad that featured ten freshmen, the herd has a bright future ahead. 36 t ast4Ct f 38 Bison take third place in Mid-South Froth-Soph tournament. KNEELING: Mike Munsey, Vic Hawkins, Marc Neeley, Doug Duncan, Jackie Wells. STANDING: Darrin Houck, Brad Funkhouser, Pete Clancy, Troy O’Donley. 59 SqtMUt The softball Bison under first-year coach Kent Hauley showed much improvement over the year. The Bison finished 7-11 over-all and fourth in the conference. They opened the season by splitting with a tough Norris City squad, and narrowly lost to the rival Aces from Mt. Carmel. All-Conference selection Debbie Cowling anchored the pitching staff with a consistent effort all season long. While fellow Mid-South pick, Kelly Schoenheit, led the team in hitting with a .451 average. While a young team, the Bison will miss the services of seniors Rhonda Lynn, first base, Ginger Hamilton, catcher, and Debbie Cowling, pitcher. The outlook for the future is bright with a group of talented underclassmen ready to take the field with a good work ethic. Look for even better seasons to come. KNEELING: Sonya Mojberger. However, first year coach Robert Clancy saw some bright spots in the season and returns next year with a young club that has some experience. Some individuals managed to make the most of their personal seasons. Klay Wheeler and Joe Funkhouser were selected to the Mid-South All-Conference Team in the fall. Joe also set a new school record for homeruns for that season. Tony Knight proved a pleasant surprise in the spring as he led the team in hitting and collected M VP honors. It also placed three people in the southern Illinois day camp ensemble which holds a concert at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Though the numbers are small, the band produced a rich, vibrant sound and distinguished itself in many competitions and parades, including our own Grayville Days parade. Hopefully, in the future, the size of the band will grow, and many more people will enjoy the sound of music. Keep up the good work, Mr. Baker! 46 Senior band members receive their awards. The Girls' Athletic Association continues its popularity at Grayville High School. As in past years the girls held their pizza sale to raise money for their big event, the GAA Dance. This year's dance was labeled a huge success by those in attendance. Debbie Cowling was crowned as the Dance Queen. The GAA also held its bi-annual Father-Daughter banquet. The participants were divided into three groups, and competitions were held in ring toss, volleyball, and various silly relay races. After the games came the main event — the meal. Again it was a great time. 10 1988 Gusher Staff: KJay Wheeler. Jeff Haywood. Rob Clancy. Dawn Baldwin, Editors; Shawn Odom. Charlie Lmnemann. Mike Garbo. Rhonda Lynn. Joey Legg. Brooke Wells. The 1988 Gusher Staff hopes you enjoy this issue as much as they enjoyed putting U together. The class put a lot of timr and effort into this project, and think they have put out a good product. Even most of the pictures turned out good (with the exception of this one. Thanks Mr. Hawley). 33 Kyle and Rhonda are at it again. Only these five, Jeff, Dean, Charlie, KJay, and A1 ike, made it to the hallowed halls of C.H.5. on Senior Skip Day. Of course not all of them had learning on the mind. Charlie was trying to avoid working in the fields, and Dean and Mike were required to attend for one reason or another. Who knows why Jeff and Klay showed? As for the rest of the class? Unsubstantiated reports had them on the river, at Holiday World, in Evansville (Shopping supposedly), and lounging around the house. Wherever they went we know they had fun in the sun. As for these guys, try to get out and have some fun, boys. Stdcteate ta s4tte ui s4ccute ttie Grayville High School has something to be proud of. It has not just one, but two students who will enter national service academies this summer. Jeff Haywood and Charles Linnemann will be serving their country by attending the top military training centers in the world. Jeff has accepted a seat at West Point, the Army s academic center, and Charlie is headed for the U. S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. The Co-Valedictorians were selected for work they had performed in school, prior experiences, and the recommendation of their representatives in Washington. It is extremely rare to see two students from such a small town to be selected, and we wish Jeff and Charlie the best of luck in their endeavors.
