Today's world is a fast-changing world where new, untried values are often substituted for old, proven ones. It is the hope of the 1974 Gusher Staff that Grayville High School will continue to be an educational institution of character building and mental and physical development in which the student becomes aware of his responsibility to posterity. May Grayville High continue to be an institution which instills into its students, academic knowledge, a Christian concern for his fellowman, and the understanding of his responsibility to his country - the ingredients necessary for a happy and useful life. 4 CckoolCoknS: Rtid Ctud B CtjCk AdinlvdSfobOttiOn Supt. The spirit of Homecoming 1974 was aroused by a successful Homecoming Week planned by a hardworking committee. The events of the week included a Mr. Leggs Contest, Class Display Contest, Teenybopper Day, Mr. Hotlips Contest, and Red Shirt Day. Tliis rising spirit was exemplified by a bonfire that was built by the entire school body. The climax of Homecoming 1974 was the game and coronation Friday night at the Junior High School. The Grayville Varsity Bison successfully defeated the Allendale Yellow Jackets with a score of 57 to 53. The Junior Varsity also won the preliminary game. The festivities were especially highlighted by the coronation and dance. Gary Glover and Chris Tate were crowned King and Queen between the games and a beautiful dance featuring Cletus Rude brought the week of festivities to an end. The time was exciting the the spirit was remarkable. 8 MAID OF HONOR: Micki Stinnett ESCORT: Bruce Rose SENIOR ATTENDANT: Mary Broster ESCORT: Dan Finch SENIOR ATTENDANT: Jane Shelton ESCORT: Craig Begert SENIOR ATTENDANT: Joyce Leathers ESCORT: Dave Burrows SENIOR ATTENDANT: Sherri Graham ESCORT: Dennis Roberts JUNIOR ATTENDANT: Darla Spenser ESCORT: Bob Houser JUNIOR ATTENDANT: Chris Postel ESCORT: David Orr SOPHOMORE ATTENDANT: Lisa Siegert ESCORT: Richie Snyder 12 SOPHOMORE ATTENDANT: Teresa Keeling ESCORT: Pat Williams FRESHMAN ATTENDANT: Linda Kinsall ESCORT: Steve Broster FRESHMAN ATTENDANT: Tammy Bridgeman ESCORT: Steve Doty 13 C hLcwVaJiM I, Carol Abom, will my fat to Sue Ann Keepes and to Mr. Wheeler my ability to play ping-pong. The final year, the senior year, gives the annual school events a new dimension and meaning by suddenly realizing the purpose of homecoming, dances, basketball games, baseball games, and more specially, graduation. In this respect, the senior year is unique because it culminates three years of experience in a year of change. The final year sees youths become men and women, attitudes turn to ideals, and followers become leaders. Within these changes are the tensions of aggravation and disappointment in failure, and the jubilance and confidence in success. Upon finishing one’s last year at Grayville High, the senior leaves his sheltered life and enters into a competitive and challenging society. In the ensuing years of successes and failures, the senior year will be ever present in one's mind, heart, and soul. CmZo Piopk cy A look into the future brings us to the year 1984 at the ten year reunion of the G. C. H. S. class of 1974. As we arrive at Grayville High, we find that Jennie Dow has taken over her father's position as traffic director. After we park, we enter the gymnasium. Our host, Paul Jay, now a traveling salesman, rushes up to greet us with warm embraces. Before we take our seats, we decide to mill around and talk to all our old friends. We see Cheryl Reynolds, who is busy making candles over in the corner. We notice she is using the liberty bell that she won for magazine sales as a mold. Up walks Kevin Aker, CIA agent. He starts questioning us on the fuel shortage, but is interrupted by a loud noise. We rush to the door to find that it is only Steve Wilson and Dana Acree on their motorcycles. It seems that they have joined ''Hell’s Angels. We turn back to Kevin, but he is busy jabbering away into his shoe telephone. We see Dan Marlow, winner of the 1983 Daytona 500. He tells us that his truck driver is Debbie Miller, who is also a 1974 graduate. Dennis Eagle Roberts is now quite famous since his face is appearing in place of the bald eagle on the Seal of the U.S. Two other faces being seen quite often around the U. S. are Bruce Rose and Harry Baxter who have started a new sensation in show business by impersonating women. They have appeared in many fancy nightclubs, and everywhere they go they are accompanied by Sondra Brand, who sits in the audience and laughs at everything they do. Sondra, who now has her famous laugh insured for $4,000, does wonders for their ego. Mary Kay Broster, still a resident of Grayville, has taken the job of top secretary at Grayville High. Also Steve Gunn has taken over the job of head janitor. Dr. Dan Finch, also residing in Grayville, has opened a local optometric office. Debbie Grace Orr, now a famous ballerina, is performing in Swan on Ice” later this month. David Burrows has recently been named Roller Derby King of 1983. Next, we see Debbie Dill, who as a mother of 12, is making pickles in her spare time. Glen Meritt has taken over the ownership of the local Dairy Queen. Melody Irvine is running the concession stand at Bullock Racewjay. After greeting several of our former classmates, we take our seats. Suddenly, we hear a frantic cry from the hallway. We rush to the door to discover that Sherri Graham, now a well-known psychologist, has lost her way upon returning from the restroom. At last the program begins. Our guest speaker is Craig Begert. Craig is now the National Beta Club Head Advisor. His private secretary, Becky Fern Graddy, helped him write his speech six months in advance. As Craig continues his speech, there is a loud yawn. It's only Jim Eaton who has just awakened from his nap. Now awake, he pulls out his comb and fixes his hair throughout the remainder of Craig's speech. Now we are ready to begin the entertainment. First on the agenda is Chris Tate. Chris is going to play her clarinet and the piano at the same time. Incidentally. Chris has just finalized her 13th divorce, two hours before she got here. Immediately after the reunion, Chris is going to get married again since she doesn't want to stay on 13 too long. After Chris finishes her act, there is a unanimous demand for Marlena Miser, Carol Aborn, and Nancy Groff, now starring in their situation comedy series, ''The Three Stoogettes, to give us a show. They refuse, so then Jeff Kleinschmidt volunteers to give us a demonstration of how his new game show Who's Lucky works. When everyone acts unenthused, Jeff suggests we eat. Our waiter for this evening, Mike Wilson, serves us fabulous food cooked by the skillful hands of Gary Glover, chef at the Brown Derby. As soon as the meal is finished, Roger Wayland, owner of the Mercury Independent, runs 70 laps around the gym in 5 minutes to work off the food. There is a suggestion from the floor that we sing, so everyone breaks into song with Every party has its pooper, that's why we invited you, Nancy Munsey. Nancy then stands up holding a sign reading DOWN WITH P.E. , UP WITH SHOEHORNS! There is a shrill sound to one side of the gym. Everyone turns around and fins that Jane Shelton, now an amateur opera star, has begun one of her unforgettable arias. All the girls. remembering that eventful day in P.E. of 1972, immediately pick Jane up and carry her off to be locked in the equipment room. There is a lot of commotion over in another corner of the gym. Everyone looks to find that it's only Micki Stinnett and Jeff Tate having one of their knock-down drag-out fights over the best kind of Home Hair Straightener. Jeff Is now a marriage counselor, helping many young couples solve their marital problems. Micki has become a warden in Joliet prison and is doing a fantastic job counseling the inmates. Many of our old classmates have come through quite a bit to get here. Carl Garner rode his bicycle all the way from California where he has taken over the voice of Yogi Bear. PFC Steve Willett has gone AWOL just to attend this sentimental gathering. Richard Williams has come all the way from Rainy City Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he is employed as a weatherman. Unable to attend is Jack Cox, who is presently in Newgate Prison for making obscene phone calls to Queen Elizabeth. David Graham is in Washington, D.C. meeting with President Kissinger, trying to devise a solution to the energy crisis, with the help of his trusty calculator. At the end of the reunion, Don Riley, well-known karate expert, suddenly remembers Jane’s dilemma and knocks down the equipment room door. Jane, suffering from lack of oxygen, is aided by Joyce Leathers, owner of a large chain of pharmacies across the nation, who quickly supplies needed pills and medication. Once again, as on our graduation night in 1974, we regret leaving all of our fellow classmates. However, we have had a good visit, and the memories of this reunion will linger on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to attend. Cost AUNT ELLEN............... The Student Council is composed of members from each class and from every organization in the school. Membership is determined by ballot voting after candidates have completed their petitions. Club membership is determined by popular vote. The Student Council is an organization which attempts to promote and to improve all important phases of school life. After lying dormant for several years, the Beacon once again shines. For the past three years Mr. Wheeler has attempted to revive this ’ 'sleeping chronicle. ” The lack of time and availability of the student workers, and the lack of school interest were some of the setbacks. However, as part of the program of Typing II, they are making yet another attempt at resuscitation. The Girls' Athletic Association is a fun-filled, state-wide organization for girls in high school. The girls meet every Tuesday after school for short activities such as volleyball, kickball, softball, and bowling. Each girl is awarded three points for each hour of participation, and pins are awarded for an accumulation of seventy-five points. During the fall and winter of 1973 the girls attended Holiday On Ice, the annual slumber party at the high school, and a skating party. G. A. A. also sponsored a mother-daughter play-day and banquet at the high school. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the G. A. A. school year is the Formal Dance that the club sponsors. The hard-working committee plans and decorates for the annual affair. The hard work that the committee puts forth is awarded with a beautiful evening of long-lasting memories. 67 J M Mbe i lA keit . . . 68 •sfwp Gvrrjrf-qsvy'mp'QL B ipir9qs fv Ftjfrnq fvtfmwM wqqylw spfi ftvyj AJotional Council Delegate ofa Delta Pt Bpsilon, An f-fonouny Quxduuxte Business ptateuUty Kent Wheeler Utth Egypt District Student Council Secteiaty Steve Hartsock Soloist (fi BuanSvdle Ptdllaxtnonlc Ovckesbia Kevin Wilson Illinois State Beta President Craig Begert DA- . The hours the staff spent putting this book together will be indeed worthwhile if it succeeds in its goal - to help you remember this year at Grayville Community High School. In the beginning, this book was an aspiration, and, at times we thought it would be a failure; but thanks to all the help and cooperation we've received, this book has been successfully completed. We would like to extend a special thanks to the student body for helping us remember these special moments and treasured memories. May our ending be everyone else's beginning. This book now belongs to those within its pages and those who read it.
