May our lives always exemplify the ideals and virtues she has taught us. preface During the past four years as students at Grayville Community High School, there are certain evaluations, assessments, joys and sorrows, and activities-both academic and co-curricular-in which the members of the Senior Class of 1970 have been active participants. These years were formulative ones, and years which have been both exciting and challenging for us. In the years of our development here at G.C.H.S., we graduating Seniors have learned that what has unlocked the past WILL unlock the future. The cooperative team efforts and the boundless, illimitable supply of energy served us in understanding our roles and purposes of working toward common co-curricular goals, namely the exercises and profits from the unforgettable bake sales, the long workdays, the never-ending line of cars in the car washes, the sweat shirt sales, the magazine sales, and a wide assortment of adventuresome projects. We learned that although, at the time, the writing of term papers and the taking of difficult exams were not in themselves fun. we are forever thankful and grateful that our teachers exerted their influences upon us in preparing us for our future roles as adults in an ever-changing, dynamic society. Our collective hope is that the 1970 graduating Seniors will reflect the spirit and the soul of our ALMA MATER, G.C.H.S. Staff Editors: Jane Bcgcrt Sue Siegert Jerry Thomas Nancy Wilson 6 Appreciation THE STAFF OF 1970 The Gusher Staff would like to acknowledge its appreciation for the encouragement and for the endless aid of the following people: Mr. Ronald Culbrcth, Superintendent; Mr. Roy Fleming, Principal; Miss Marilyn Bingnian, Advisor-Sponsor; Mr. Wallace Dallas. (Ulass flropfyect) A look into the future takes us to the Class of ’70’s 25th reunion, 1995. Nancy Bowman and Audrey (Butler) Wells, hostesses for the evening, greet us at the door. Nancy has been spending her time on Edwards County Farm Retreat. Audrey has married Jack Wells who is a game warden and has just killed his first 300 pound deer. We notice in one corner a group of athletes. Randy Kleinschmidt is now playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His batting average is in a slump at .756. Trudy Nuckolls is playing basketball for the Redheads. Jane Begert is now the athletic director for the Green Bay Packers. Kim Frankland is assisting her by developing a closed circuit t.v. to go on her players’ helmet. The medical field is well represented too. Beth Curtis and Shelia O’Neill are busy studying Jim Sullivan’s bone breakage problem. Entering now is Grayville’s own little NASA. Jack Bush and Bob Shelton are celebrating their successful design of the rocket that landed John Wayland on Mars. John sends his regrets that he cannot attend the reunion because of a minor mechanical failure. However, Danny Paschal is planning a ticker tape parade for John when he returns safely home. Five people in uniforms catch our eyes next. Sgt. Sharon Harvey of the Marine Corps is arguing with two state police officers, David Kiefer and Jim Groff. Vickie Spann and Diane Salisbury. GCHS’s new meter maids, are giving them all tickets (unexcused absences). The former Becky Waggoner and Sue Siegert are housewives and mothers, but in their “free” time they, with Eugenia Brown, are working in the new feminist movement to emancipate womankind from masculine domination. Donald Daniels is preaching in another corner. He has replaced Dr. Martin Luther King in his endeavors. Trying not to listen are Carolyn Coley, Pat Lingafelter, Mark Campbell, and Tom Lentz. Carolyn is now the end girl with the famous Rockettes. Pat is the head waitress at Grayville’s new Topless A-Go-Go. Mark is leading the hottest rock and roll group in Rhode Island and Tom has just returned from the largest Rock-Festival ever, with only minor cuts and abrasions. Linda Ford is hustling around look for hot tips. She’s the new editor of the MERCURY-INDEPENDENT. She discovered that Martha Kiehl, on her first flight as an airline stewardess, was kidnapped and is in Cuba. Rumors also have it that Ronnie Duncan is miraculously farming the Sahara Desert. Entering now are Debbie Hering and Danny Glover. Debbie is scheduled to play at Carnegie Hall as soon as she can find her Steinway. Danny is conducting the St. Louis Symphonic Orchestra at the S.I.U. arena this weekend. Nancy Wilson has cornered the distinguished Jerry Thomas, which is no easy task. Jerry is practicing law and will soon take over Perry Mason’s practice. Nancy has designed Grayville's first, and last, oboe reed manufacturing plant. John Weil just entered the conversation. He’s still in his father’s back-hoe service. Belinda Risinger, the famous fashion designer, told us that Connie Goldman is in Hollywood starring in X movies. She’s the bad guy in the Westerns. She says that Don Mabrey will not be with us at the 25th reunion because he is working on approval reading lists for the U.S. Navy. Mike Carrel!, however, is with Connie this evening. He is in charge of her special, psychedelic sound effects, not that she needs any, however. Our last report from Steve Leonard was that he is on a special, secret assignment as an undercover agent for the Federal government’s corps of educators. Now we’ll return to our respective motel rooms, knowing that we are in the safe and capable hands of Benny Joe Elliot, our fun-loving motel manager and host. 32 (Wass Mill of ’70 The Senior Class of 1970 being of sound mind and body do hereby bequeath to underclassmen its last will and testament. And the Grayville Bison were set for a holiday of merry-making. The Seniors and Sophomores, with record-breaking stacks, salvaged the most wood for the bonfire. After the enthusiasm was sparked, the snake dance to the Junior High was begun. The whole town was informed of the undying spirit of Grayville. At the Junior High, the Seniors were awarded the prize for the best display. On Saturday the games exemplified the team effort for which GCHS is famous. The Junior Varsity stomped Crossville with a score of 73 to 46. In the Varsity game, Tony Haywood made 24 of Grayville’s 80 points, letting Crossville go home with only 52 points. The festivities were brought to a climax by the coronation and dance. Sheila 0‘Neill and Randy Kleinschmidt were crowned to reign over Toyland while Raggedy Anns and toy soldiers looked on with approval. The efforts of the homecoming committee, begun a month earlier, were finally culminated. Homcoming royalty, Sheila O’Neill, queen, and Randy Kleinschmidt, king, begin the dance.
