The conference playoffs were changed slighfly from fhe year before, as eighf feams had a shof af fhe fifle. The firsf four finishers, however, would have fhe home courf advanfage in fhe playoffs. As fhe final dead- line was approaching, GCC had a 2-9 conference slafe wifh seven games remaining. The Norfh Zone Tournamenf, in which fhe Vikings parficipafed, was fo be hosfed by lasf year's conference champs, Tyler. Tyler Kilgore, Lon Morris, and Jacksonville Bapfisf were holding down fhe fop four places af fhe midway mark in fhe conference schedule. Since I948, fhe TEC has had six nafional championship feams and six ofher feams fhaf have placed in fhe fop four spofs of The nafional fournamenf held af Hufchinson, Ka. each year. Under fhe direcfion of Jim Spivey and new assisfanf coach Dr. Elavil George, fhe Vikings were hopeful for anofher playoff spof as fhey have reached fhe Norfh Zone fourney every year since GCC's firsf baskefball squad in I966. 159
