11961-1962 VARSITY BASKETBALL TOP ROW: R. Parker, B. Melin, I. Carlson, I. Hopkins, D. Williams, R. Reidel, R. Pickett, I. Pester, C. Alderton, D. Hawkins. BOTTOM ROW: 1. Posson, G. Weller, I. Stone, M. Ledvina, P. Bolender, L. Heppner, C. DeYoung, Coach Westall. With 5 lettermen back from last year's squad, the l961-62 edition of the Rams captured 15 of 22 outings. Early in the season the Rams beat Grant and Antioch. but then fell to Warren With three of the first five games under their belt, they opened the Grayslake Holiday Tournament against McHenry, losing the eventual champs 94-84. In the consolation bracket the Rams dropped Deerfield and Dundee to win consolation honors. Following the Christmas holidays, the Rams defeated Wauconda before losing to Round Lake and Lake Forest on successive weekends. They then pro- ceeded to win the next six games including a 76-55 win over Warren. Going into the final week of play, the Rams needed two wins to take the title. However. the Rams blew their return game with Round Lake 86-76. A 66-59 win over Lake Forest ended conference play. In the regional opener at Wauconda, the Rams watched Cary-Grove make their way into the finals 63-61. The Rams attach was featured by a fast breaking offense, which averaged 73 points in Conference play. The first five consisted of 8 players of which any five could operate as an effective team, with the tall boys, Hawkins. Alderton and Williams, rebounding under both baskets, and Parker. Pickett, Melin. Weller, and Stone dominating the floor play, the Rams gave every opponent all they could handle. Hawkins, Parker, and Williams were awarded positions on the All-Confer- ence Team. Don Hawkins and Denny Williams were voted by their teammates as the most valuable player and honorary captain respectively. Hawkins. Williams. Parker, Melin, Picket and Weller wrote A finis to their outstanding high school basketball careers. This season climaxed the most successful season the Rams have had. In addition to winning the Grayslake Consolation trophy, the second place conference finish of 10-4 and the over-all season total of 15-7 were both school records.
