This is the class who gave the first play, the first dance in the new building, and no one will ever forget our first prom at Glen Flora. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm became the motto for an ambi- tious class which set an example for doing things. Donald Snyder was the opening pres- ident and jerry Winters, his vice-president, followed to lead the class through their Senior year. Individual names can not be mentioned to describe the spirit which has carried this group from various schools to unified perfec- tion. Every member contributed his portion Prefidenr. ..... .,.. j ERRY WINTERS Vice Prerident .... .... -I OAN DANAHER Secretary ...... , .,......... PAT CAMPBELL Treasurer ......... HAROLD GRUTZMACHER Seniors to these last busy years trying to do things for the beneht of the school and those of the community who will follow their steps in the future. Those first class rings of green and white, representing the school's colors, ordering in- vitations, being measured for caps and gowns, and counting credits, all the preparations for the last glorious days. This is the parting for many who have grown to love and honor the new educational venture designed to better the entire community. This group won't be back next year, or the year after that, but their interest will remain forever in the FUTURE of G.C.H.S.! ! First Row EUGENE JOSEPH ALSPERGER ,,,,, , ,... SS Emerald Staff 47348 E have presented here, through the Door to the Future , the things we will always want to remember about our high school dazevour clubs. athletics, dances, friends, and even the classes. Much of the work was centered in the dining room of the home of Marilyn Hook. There the staff worked: mounting pictures, writing copy, organizing the magazine campaign, and planning money making ventures. Here also some sleep was lost, some Hngernails lowered, and a few cobwebs loosened from brain cells. In the meantime the business managers made the rounds selling ads. Perhaps this doesn't sound like much work, but it's an all-year job. Possibly you noticed --the teachers did that flashbulbs were popping much of the time. And have you ever thought how difficult it is to keep track of all the happenings during a school year? Students come students go, you have a dance- 'I have a dance. Another article for the EMERALD. But that's not the spirit. We've had headaches, we've griped, and we've still enjoyed it, This book is for you. We all know it by heart. So if we help you remember in the dim future a little bit about the year of '48, our purpose is achieved. Chris kicked the point and the Rams led 1336. Good line play fea- tured the rest of the game except for a pass which scored for St. Marys in the last quarter. They missed the point by inches and the Rams had their first victory of the year. ANTIOCH IZ .....,. ........ G RAYSLAKE 13 Again in this game the Rams were quickly behind 6-0. Then followed the Rams first aerial score of the year, Wambaugh to Snyder. The next kickoff put Antioch ahead again as Kraft swept 60 yds. to score. After the half the Rams put on their last steady drive. Wambaugh scored and kicked the point. The Rams had another game in the bag and line play made the final score 1312. The Heacllincrs . . ELGIN RESERVES 13 ........ GRAYSLAKE 0 Elgin broke in front on a long pass and a heavy line stalled the Rams. Grayslake was close to paydirt many times but repeated fumbles and bad plays stopped them. In the second half Elgin scored again on a pass to put the Rams behind 13-O. Good play by Peterson and Burke was the best the Rams 1. could offer. ELMHURST 26 ...,... ..... G RAYSLAKE 0 RAMS travel to Elmhurst, only to be held scoreless again. GRAYSLAKE 0 The Rams played the best game of their schedule the hrst half but were overwhelmed by penalties and three breakaway runs to lose 20-0. The runs, 70, 54, and 40 yds, were the only flares of offense by either team. The Rams' line held the ZeeBees in their own territory the whole first half, but couldn't get started themselves. It was a very hard fought game on both sides but a heart-breaker to lose for the Rams. LEMONT 0 ,.......,....... GRAYSLAKE 25 In the first annual Homecoming game the Rams defeated Lemont 25-0. On fourth down the Indians punted to Schalk on the 40 who ran it into the end zone, but it was called back. The Rams marched to their first score with Winters going over. The point was missed. In the same quarter Snyder scored on a pass from Hitzman. In the third period the Rams held the Indians for 6 downs within the 5 yd. line. During the last period Burke smashed over from the five and also kicked the extra point. The next time the Rams had the ball Hitzman faded back to pass, found the field open and ran for a touchdown. Burke missed the point. The game ended with the Rams marching down the Held. This was the climax to the Homecoming celebration. LAKE GENEVA 19 .......... GRAYSLAKE 0 This game was a hard fought battle. Every time the green and white got within scoring territory a fumble or an intercepted pass stopped them. All three touchdowns were made on ground plays. Peterson blocked one extra point. Another was wide of the goal post and they passed for the third. WAUKEGAN RES. 38 ........ GRAYSLAKE 0 Last game of the year ended in disaster. On a cold, rainy, sleet and snowy day we were invaded by the Bulldogs of Waukegan. The bigger, heavier Bull- dogs smashed and battered the Rams line to pieces and scored repeatedly. The season came to a close with a record of three wins and five losses for the green and white. . . . AND DOWNS Coming Gridiron Stars . his year's lightweight football teams have learned many fine points which will come out in next years varsity games. Although the record of this season is not too impressive the boys did a fine job in several games and Coach Stickles used some of them in spots in the varsity games. Thus giving these fellows the much needed experience which at the beginning of the season over half of them had only a spectator's knowledge ofthe game. Through their own willingness to work and report for practice regularly, they have developed into players of con- siderable promise. You will see them on the gridiron next year carrying on the spirit and deter- mination to win. Then came the big day! Saturday, Oct. 25, a huge parade of beautiful floats headed by the Grayslake American Legion Color Guard and the high school left the high school grounds and proceeded south on Lake Street and through the main business sec- tiong then continued east to the football field. During the half of the game two magnificent trophies were awarded to the best fioats entered in the parade. First place was taken by the Emerald, second honors went to the-Junior class. The climax was the afternoon's game. The Ram's emerged victorious by the crushing score of 25 0, The final event of the two days' celebration was f . the first annual homecoming dance given by the Pep Club. Rams Rendezvous was chosen as the theme to welcome last year's graduates. Alumni and guests were awed by our magnificent gym. At 10 o'clock the homecoming queen, Phyllis Kilman, was crowned by the captain of the football team for the afternoon's game. The Queen's enter- tainment consisted of a twirling routine presented by Sally jo and Gail Dene Nicholas, followed by an impersonation of Aljolson by Jack Quaadman. The alumnae contributed their rendition in har- mony, Let the Rest of the World Go By . Not to be outdone, the male faction proved they too had musical abilities and powers of entertainment, and offered several impromptu vocal numbers. The evening's Festivities closed at eleven, until Homecoming, 1948. ez fn' ENONI , gf: wr 39'bl f-Z T ff we 'W 'iw ,EIR Nm SWF? ll'EI5'f.S ,H--a ,ff Hg! A Here ,Il T f qi' 653,23 K it ff?
